THE COACHING STAFF

Spirou is about more thanjust winsBy Kevin GrayUnion Leader/New Hampshire Sunday News

Before Stan Spirou was the toast of the town,an untouchable Division II coach and everyone'sfavorite golf partner at Manchester Country Club, his basketball team was off to a miserable seasonin 1987-88.

And Spirou was expecting some heat.George Larkin, then New Hampshire

College's vice president of student affairs, calledin the young coach for a meeting. Given theteam's 2-9 start and six-straight losses, Spiroucould only imagine the conversation ahead.

"We had just come back from Florida, andwe'd lost by about 50. I remember thinking tomyself I'd better find what other jobs are availablein New Hampshire," Spirou said.

What he got was encouragement."In so many words, he told me to hang in

there. We came back and won eight in a row andsalvaged the year (finishing 13-15)," he said."People talk about the great teams and the FinalFour teams we've had, but that year was just assatisfying from a coach's point of view.

The road to 400 career wins, a milestone theSouthern New Hampshire University coachreached Saturday, is about perseverance.

After the 1987-88 season ended with a one-point loss Keene State, Spirou and assistants JayDufour and Bill Foti went on a recruiting trip thefollowing day. They drove 400 miles to Torontoin Spirou's sedan.

North of the border they ultimately landedfuture All-American Wayne Robertson. ThePenmen were on their way to 12 NCAATournament bids, six Elite Eight appearances, and Spirou has averaged 21 wins during 19years as a coach.

"I'm not sure what would have happened ifthings went sour my third year," Spirou said.

The road to 400 wins is about-what else?-good coaching.

During the 1995 NCAA Tournament NortheastRegional, the Penmen defeated the College ofSaint Rose in overtime 113-110, behind pointguard Rob Paternostro's 44 points. Spirou useda game plan to draw the opponents seven-footcenter Garth Joseph away from the basket, enabling Paternostro to work his magic.

"Stan picked up something on the St. Rose

defense, and he started running a pick-and-rollto take Joseph away from the play," Dufour said."Basically, Paternostro ended up taking over thegame instead of Joseph."

Next day in practice, the head coachimplemented a box-and-one defense thatfrustrated Philadelphia Textile. The Penmenwon, 84-62, advancing to the Elite Eight inKentucky.

"That was the best coaching job I have everseen in a two-day period," Dufour said.

Four hundred wins is about family, extendingfrom home to the hardwood.

"Stan really is like a father to these guys. Heuses a family style that I really like," said SNHUathletic director Chip Polak, who hired Spirouover Frank Monahan and Kevin Bannon on July2, 1985. "He can kick you in the butt, but he canpat you on the back. He doesn't baby them. Hesays this is the job you have to do, whether it's inthe classroom or on the court."

Ask Stan's wife, Patricia, about all those wins, and she'll credit her adopted sons wearingPenmen jerseys. Of course, Stan brought themall here. Recruiting is part of the equation, too.

"What comes to mind for me are all the greatkids that have come through the program in 19years. They've gone from baby sitting mychildren to dating them," said Patricia Spirou."Stan has a talent for going out and getting kidsthat fit the system."

Take the case of leading scorer Mark Yeaton, senior guard from Concord who went from theUniversity of New Hampshire to New

Hampshire Technical Institute to SNHU."I was definitely down and out until he gave

me a shot. I was on my last legs," Yeaton said. "Icame in and worked out, and he gave me ascholarship pretty quickly."

For Dufour, the picture on his office computerreminds him 400 wins is about loyalty.

This past week the staff received an e-mailfrom alumnus Marcus Miles, who played onSpirou's first team in 1985-86. During onesemester, the Brooklyn, N.Y. was having difficultywith grades and needed time away frombasketball.

"Coach told him, keep your scholarship andfocus on those grades. Marcus just e-mailed us apicture of his house in Alabama," Dufour said.

"Stan puts a premium on loyalty as far as hisplayers and coaches. The wins and losses arewhere you get paid, but what's important are therelationships you develop beyond the playingdays."

All those elements, from the intangibles to theall-star players, have led to a 400-163 careerrecord for Spirou. There's no stopping him for500 wins. Maybe 600 wins?

"As long as they want me around, and as longas they like what we're doing, I'm not goinganywhere," he said.

Except, perhaps to the NCAA Tournament afew more times.
