Chris Rhodes9th YearEdinboro ‘95

Former Edinboro All­American ChrisRhodes was appointed the head swimmingcoach at his alma mater in October of 2001.

He competed for Edinboro from 1991­95,earning All­American honors in 1993­94 and1994­95 as a member of freestyle relay teams.He also earned All­PSAC honors and set aschool record as a member of the 200freestyle relay team. That relay team finishedsecond at the NCAA Division II NationalChampionships and set a conference recordthat stood for six years.

A key part of legendary teams while aswimmer at Edinboro, Rhodes’ goal since tak­ing over has been simple yet ambitious ­­ toreturn the Fighting Scots to a prominent spotin the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

Rhodes has spent his first seven yearsbuilding the foundation, and he has begun tosee some of the fruits of his efforts the lastfew years.

A number of young swimmers havequalified for the PSAC Championships, andBrooke Heath concluded a brilliant career asan 11­time All­American. She earned All­American honors in the 100 and 200­yardbreaststroke events at Nationals as a fresh­man, then in both events plus the 200­yard IMas a sophomore. That performance helpedthe women’s swimming team finish 19th at

Nationals. She repeated as an All­American inall three events as the Fighting Scots finished20th at Nationals in 2007 and 19th in 2008.

The women were bolstered by distancefreestyler Marie Nedley, who came on to winthe PSAC Championship in both the 1,000 and1,650­yard freestyle. She then earned honor­able mention All­American honors in the 1,650.

As a team the women finished with a 12­1record, the best in school history, and finishedfourth at the PSAC Championship.

The men’s team, meanwhile, came infifth at the PSAC Champiosnship. Rhodes wasrecognized as the PSAC Women’s Coach ofthe Year in 2007, and this past year was hon­ored as Edinboro’s Coach of the Year.

A year ago the women finished 11­2 andwere sixth at the PSAC’s. The men were 4­7and seventh respectively, but Max Niggel wasnamed the PSAC Freshman of the Year.

Academics has also been a major part ofRhodes’ agenda. His women’s teams haveearned All­Academic honors every semesterbut one, and the men’s team has earned simi­lar honors.

Rhodes began his coaching career as anassistant swimming coach at Titusville HighSchool in 1996­97, then moved on to AshlandUniversity, one of the top programs on theDivision II level, as an assistant swimmingcoach while completing work on his master'sdegree in Reading, which he received inAugust 1999. He coached a two­time nationalchampion while at Ashland.

Rhodes returned to western Pennsylvaniaas the assistant swimming coach at Oil CityArea High School for the 1999­2000 season. Hehas also served as the head coach of the StrokeDevelopment Camp at Westminster College. Inaddition, he has been a Reading Specialist inthe Oil City Area School District.

Rhodes graduated from Edinboro inDecember 1995 with a bachelor's degree inElementary Education and Early ChildhoodEducation. He and his wife Stephanie reside inEdinboro, along with their sons, Greysen (3),and Griffin, born March 31, 2009. He is a mem­ber of the College Swim Coaches Associationof America and the American SwimmingCoaches Association.

The women’s swimming programfound out a year ago that there was life afterBrooke Heath. Edinboro’s most accomplishedswimmer, Heath helped the Scots finish 12­1her senior year, a school record for wins,along with a fourth place finish at the PSACChampionships and 18th at the NCAA DivisionChampionships.

“I knew this day would eventually comeand I can’t help but think of ‘Remember theTitans’ when they lose there top linebacker,you cannot replace a Brooke Heath,” relatedRhodes prior to the start of last season.

Well, just as in the movie, Rhodes foundthat others would step and fill in. It helpedthat the former Edinboro All­American has puttogether several strong recruiting classes thatare starting to pay dividends.

When it was all said and done, thewomen’s swimming team posted an 11­2record and finished sixth at the PSACChampionships.

Marie Nedley earned a trip to Nationalsfor the second straight year, and she wasjoined by the 200­yard freestyle relay team ofDesiree’ Thomas, Hannah Rankin, LaurenKnupp and Rebecca Stum.

Rhodes noted that marked the first timea 200­yard freestyle relay team has advancedto the national championships since he waspart of the men’s team and earned All­American honors in 1994­95.

Here’s Rhodes’ assessment of theupcoming season:

FREESTYLE – Swimming the sprint freeevents are Lauren Knupp, Hannah Rankin,Desiree Thomas, and newcomer MalloryWaldinger. We are looking to make a repeatshowing at the NCAA championships.Swimming mid distance free will be SamSustrich, Leanne Fuller, and Megan Kaulius.Distance free will be Marie Nedley and fresh­man Kayla Joy. Marie is the school recordholder in the 500, 1000, and 1650 free andshould make a good showing at Nationals.

BACKSTROKE – This will be a strong eventfor us. Katie Close returns as the top backstro­ker. Maddie Hedstrom, Karie Sheahan, KoriHamilton, Rankin, Thomas, and newcomerSara Kuhn will compete here.

BREASTSTROKE –Kate Marschner willhead up these events. Newcomers AlsihaLaRosa and Colleen Sheldon will have a bigimpact as well.

BUTTERFLY – Katie Close again will becounted here, as well as Maddie Hedstrom,who placed eighth at last years PSAC meet.

IM­ Chelsea Grosser returns as the top per­former. Alisha LaRosa, Katie Joy, and SaraKuhn will also be counted on.

The Edinboro University men’s teamcontinues to grow, not just in quantity, butalso quality. Two year’s ago the FightingScots finished fifth out of seven teams atthe PSAC Championships. A year ago theFighting Scots came in seventh out of eightteams but Rhodes was extremely pleasedwith the progress the men made.

What made last year’s performanceeven more impressive was the youth of theteam. “This is the largest men’s team, withonly three seniors, so youth will play animportant role again,” related Rhodes lastyear.

Typifying the youth was max Niggel,who was named the PSAC Men’s SwimmingFreshman of the Year. Niggel enjoyed anoutstanding freshman campaign capped bya stellar performance at the PSACChampionships.

While emerging as one of the top dis­tance swimmers in the conference, heearned All­PSAC honors in the 1650­yardfreestyle thanks to a third place finish with atime of 16:09.46. He added a fourth placefinish in the 1000­yard freestyle with aschool­record time of 9:33.10.

Both of those times were NCAA “B”cuts. He had four “B” cut times at the

PSAC’s. He captured All­PSAC honors in the200­yard backstroke with a second place fin­ish (1:52.62)

Here’s Rhodes’ assessment for eachevent:

FREESTYLE ­­ Swimming the sprint eventsare Max Nabutovsky, Jeff Schleicher, andGrahahm Clouser. Swimming mid distancefree are Dave Fico and Ryan Sestak. The dis­tance will be a strong event for us with MaxNiggel, Drew Sapp, Mark Barron, and BenFrable competing.

BACKSTROKE ­­ Max Niggel will becounted on here as well as Rodman Walker.Zak Clifford will have a big impact.

BREASTSTROKE ­­ Derek Sapp returns asthe top performer. Tom Mechling will alsobe counted on.

BUTTERFLY ­­ A young group of talentedathletes will be competing here. BenRafalski, Darren Suroviec, Adam Cvetich,and Tom McELhaney will lead the way.

IM ­­ Derek Sapp, Ben Rafalski, Zac Clifford,and Adam Cvetich will be the top con­tenders for us.

Max Niggel Named PSAC Men’s Freshman of theYear; Five Go to Nationals

Edinboro’s University’s Max Niggelwas named the 2008­09 PSAC Men’sSwimming Freshman of the Year.

A former standout at nearby CorryHigh School, Niggel enjoyed an outstand­ing freshman campaign for the FightingScots, and it was capped by a stellar per­formance at the PSAC Championships.While emerging as one of the top distanceswimmers in the conference, he earnedAll­PSAC honors in the 1650­yard freestylethanks to a third place finish with a time of16:09.46. He added a fourth place finish inthe 1000­yard freestyle with a school­record time of 9:33.10.

Both of those times were NCAA “B”cuts. He had four “B” cut times at thePSAC’s. He captured All­PSAC honors inthe 200­yard backstroke with a secondplace finish (1:52.62), and earned his fourthNCAA “B” cut time while swimming the100­yard backstroke as the opening leg ofthe 400­yard medleyrelay. He set aschool­record inthat, as well, as the400­yard medleyrelay team tookhome fifth place.

In addition, fivewomen’s swimmersqualified for the28th Annual NCAADivision II Swimmingand DivingChampionships.

Leading thecontingent ofFighting Scots wasMarie Nedley, asophomore whomade her secondtrip to Nationals. She

finished 21st in the 1,650­yard freestyle andwas 26th in the 1,000­yard freestyle. Theyear before she earned honotrable men­tion All­American honors in both events.

The 200­yard freestyle relay teamearned a trip to Nationals after postingan NCAA “A” cut time during a time trial.The foursome of Desiree’ Thomas,Hannah Rankin, Lauren Knupp andRebecca Stum finished with a time of1:36.49. All four are making their first tripto Nationals. It marked the first time a200­yard freestyle relay team hasadvanced to the national championshipssince head coach Chris Rhodes was partof the men’s team and earned All­American honors in 1994­95.

The foursome went on to finish 17that Nationals in 200­yard freestyle, butthey also competed in the 800­yardfreestyle relay, placing 18th with aschool­record time of 7:48.02.
