Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase social services for persons living in poverty in the United States.

In this lesson, you are going to teach your students how to write 1NC case blocks. You will need white paper, tape, and scissors for your students to use.

    1. 1NC blocks are sets of arguments you use to attack the different parts of the case. See handout # 13 for an example of a 1NC block attacking the solution to Block Grants. Notice it has 4 answers- two analytical arguments and two with evidence. It is what we have been teaching our students to do all year- this just sets it up so they are prepared for their 1NC.

    2. You want your students to create one 1NC block for each problem and the solution for block grants. They will need white paper, tape, and scissors.

    3. They should work with their partner- or at least who they think their partner will be for the next tournament. You can have your varsity either doing this as well (recommended) or going around and helping your JV (helping does not mean doing it for them).

    4. First, start with the heading. On top of the piece of paper in the left hand corner, they should write their school name, followed by the year (Smith ’09). Under that, they should put Block Grants Negative. In the upper right hand corner- they should put their name (Jones) or if they are doing it with their partner, they can put the team name (Jones-Smith). Under that they should leave blank for now, but once they are done they will put what page it is- for example, if it is the first page of a two page block, they will put 1/2.

    5. Then, in the middle- they should write big and underlined: Problem One 1NC Block

    6. Then they should write out one analytical piece of evidence- making sure to give it some type of short tag first. Then add a piece of evidence (which they get from cutting it out of the evidence packet they got- hint- when they tape it on their block- just put strips of tape on the sides. Then another analytical argument, then another piece of evidence. Then go back and write how many pages it is and they are done.

    7. Repeat for the rest of the Block Grants Affirmative, and then for the Immigrant Health Care Affirmative.

    8. Now they have their entire 1st speech prepared for the negative. Make sure they file these away in the appropriate evidence folders.
