Foreword
DearFriends,Withyoursupport,wehaveforeverchangedthelivesofthousandsinneed,helpingtosavelivesandtoimprovequalityoflife.Workingthroughlocalpartnerorganizationsthatunderstandtheirowncommunitieswellandarepassionateaboutserviceandcreatingpositive,lastingchange,IMHOhasbeenabletoaddressserioushealthandmedicalneeds.Weareencouragedbyyourgenerosityandcommitmenttoourmission,andweknowthatwithyoubehindus,wewillbeabletodosomuchmore.Whileweareexcitedtonotethegrowthofourorganization,wearedeeplysaddenedbytheongoingsituationinSriLankaandthesufferingofthosearoundtheworldwhoareindireneedofrelief,medical&healthcare,andothersupport.Weareproudtosharewithyouourachievementsin2009inthisannualreport,buttherealityisthatwehavejustbeguntoscratchthesurfaceinaddressingtheneedsofthecommunitiesweserve.WeneedyourhelpinspreadingthewordaboutIMHO,inopeningnewchaptersinyourstateorcity,innetworkinguswithvaluablecontacts,andsomuchmore.Andasalways,werelyonyourgenerousdonationstodoourimportantwork.Onbehalfofthepeopleweserve,thankyouagainforyourcompassionandthoughtfulsupportofourwork.Allthebest,TheIMHOBoardofDirectors

Todevelopandimprovehealthandhealthcareinfrastructureinunder‐servedregionsworldwide.
VisionIMHOaimstoimprovehealthcareacrosstheglobeforthoseinneed,byidentifyinghealthneedsandprovidingresources&trainingtoaddressthoseneeds.Webelieveinempoweringcommunitiestobuildtheirownhealthsystems,improveoverallhealth,andtorespondtohealthneedsastheyarise.Inthisway,wepromoteself‐relianceandsustainability.IMHOfrequentlypartnerswithlocalandinternationalnon‐governmentalorganizationstobetterchannelassistancetoneedypopulations.OurworkisfocusedontheareasofPrimaryCare&PublicHealth,HealthEducation&Training,andCapacity‐Building
ProjectReports2009HumanitarianCrisis&IDPReliefFromJanuarythroughMay2009,theNorthandEastofSriLankaexperiencedanintensespikeinviolence,asthecountry'slong‐standingcivilconflictcontinuedtoplayout.ThewarwasofficiallydeclaredoverinMay2009whenthegovernmentregainedcontrol
overallterritory.Asaresultoftheconflict,hundredsofthousandsofpersonsweredisplaced,anddailylifewasseverelydisruptedthroughouttheaffectedregions.SinceFebruary2009,IMHOrespondedtotheneedsastheyarose.WithmanythousandsstillremaininginInternallyDisplacedPersons(IDP)campsacrossnorthernSriLanka,IMHOremainscommittedtoservingthehumanitarianneedsofthesepersonsandothersontheoutsidewhohavebeenaffectedbythisconflict.IMHO'seffortsinresponsetothisongoinghumanitariansituationupuntilNovember2009havesofarincluded:

Whatadifferencethisallhasmadeinhelpingthoseatthegroundtosavelivesandtoimprovetheconditionsandqualityoflifeforthosewhosurvivedthisterribletragedy.Byrespondingtotheneedsoflocalpartnerorganizationsandtakingadiverseapproach,IMHOhasbeenabletohelpfillinthegapsanddrawattentiontothosemostinneed.
Nutrition
Oneofthemostbasicandcriticallyimportantneedsofthoseinmarginalizedareasisthatofpropernutrition.Assuch,IMHOiscommittedtosupportingthebasicnutritionalneedsofthosethataremalnourished,especiallyforwomen,children,andtheelderly.In2009,IMHOsupportednutritionalfeedingprogramsforat‐riskcommunities,suchasthosedisplacedbytheconflict,theelderly,andchildreninschoolsandorphanages.
PrimaryCareAtitscore,IMHO’smaincommitmentistoprimarycareandpublichealthindisadvantagedandunder‐servedareas.In2009,IMHOcontinueditscommitmentbysupportinglocalhospitalsandclinicsinprovidingbasic,essentialmedicinestopoorpatientswholackthefinancialmeansofpayingforsuchmedicines.Anotherongoingpledgeistooperatingmobilemedicalclinicsinruralandunder‐servedareasalloverSriLankathroughprimarycarecenters,officesofvarioushospitals,andlocalpartnerorganizations.Themobileclinicsprovidegeneralmedicalconsultationalongwithfreemedicationssuchasantibiotics,vitamins,painkillers,andmore.
Amongstotherefforts,supportforlocaldoctors,nurses,andhealthworkerswasalsocontinuedthisyear,byprovidingincentiveallowancesandothergeneralsupportforthesepersonstoworkinveryremoteanddisadvantagedcommunities.
MentalHealthOneofIMHO’sprimaryareasoffocusisthatofmentalhealth.Theoverarchinggoalwitheverymentalhealtheffortistohelpthosestrugglingwithmentalillnessordisabilitytolearntoliveindependently.Gettingpatientsaccesstothelatestmedicationswiththeleastamountofsideeffectsisalsocrucial.IMHOsupportedapsychiatricunitinVavuniya,whichwasopenedin2009andhasplayedacriticalroleinrespondingtotheneedsoftheIDPswhoarrivedinlargenumbersinthenearbyIDPcamps.IMHOalsocommittedfinancialsupporttolocalpartnersinSriLankaforvariousothermentalhealthprojects,includingthedevelopmentofanacutein‐patientpsychiatricunitinNegombo,establishmentofamicrocreditwelfarefundforpatientsinKalmunai,supportforaMentalHealthDaycelebrationinKalmunai,andsupportforanexistingmulti‐disciplinarycounselingteam&anexistingmobilecommunitymentalhealthteaminJaffna.
EmergencyRelief
Batteredbyaseriesofnaturaldisastersinthelatterpartof2009,massivehumanitarianneedsaroseinmanycountriesinSouthandSoutheastAsia,includingthePhilippinesandIndonesia.IMHOgave$5,000toGivingChildrenHope,aCalifornia‐basedreliefNGO,tohelpsendmedicinesandsuppliestoaffectedcommunitiesinthesetwocountries.Afurther$5,000wasgiventoReliefInternational,anotherUS‐basednonprofit,tosupporttheiremergencyreliefeffortsinIndonesia,includinggettingmedicinestothoseinneed.
Earlierintheyear,IMHOdonated$5,000totheKoohiGothHospitalinKarachi,PakistanthroughtheNationalHealthForum,aregisterednonprofitintheU.S.Thishospitalservesapopulationofaboutonemillionpersons,mostofwhomarelivinginpoverty.ThefundsweregiventosupportOBGYNcareandfistularepairforwomen,addressingaseriousconditionaffectingmanywomenwhotypicallyfindthemselveslivingwithastigma,withoutanyoptionsforcare.
SpecialtyCareManyofIMHO’seffortsinhospitalandclinicdevelopmenthavebeeninvariousfieldsofspecialty,withtheoverarchinggoalofimprovinganddevelopingthehealthcareinfrastructureinunder‐servedregions.Throughout2009IMHOengagedinvariouscapacitybuildingeffortstohelptrainandsupportdoctorsandhealthworkers.IMHOgavedonationsofmedicalequipmenttohospitalsandbroughtattentiontotheissueofamuchneededcardiologyunitinJaffna.Generalsupportandassistanceweregiventocancerpatients.Additionally,IMHOhelpedtoestablishanIntensiveCareUnit,DiabeticCenter,TelemedicineUnit,andPostAnestheticCareUnitattheJaffnaTeachingHospital.
