Prior to the 2004 season, Donna Hornibrook took over the reins of the Cornell University field hockeyprogramwiththegoalofbuildingtheBigRedintoawinnerintheIvyLeagueandacontenderonthenationallevel.Whilethejourneyisfarfromover,Hornibrook’steamshavemadegreatprogressduringherfirstfiveseasons. Sincebringinginherfirstfullrecruitingclasspriortothe2005season,theBigRedhasjoinedPrincetoninbeingtheonlyIvyLeagueteamstopostwinningrecordsbothoverall(38-28)andinconferenceplay(19-9),aswellasfinishinthetop-fouroftheconferenceforthepastfourseasons. Lastyear,theBigRedcompletedtheseasonwithan11-5recordoveralland6-1markintheconferencetofinishinsecondplaceintheleaguerankingsforthethirdstraightyear.TheBigRedalsopostedawinningconferencerecordforthefourthstraightyear,markingthefirsttimeinprogramhistorythattheBigRedhashad fourstraightwinningseasons in Ivyplay.Theteamset theschoolmark foroverallvictories (11)andconferencevictories(6)inaseasonaswellassettingtheschoolrecordforgoals(45),assists(38)andpoints(128)inaseason. Followingtheseason,CatieDeStio’11andBelenMartinez’09werenamedtothe2008Longstreth/NFHCADivision IMideastRegionAll-Americateams,withDeStiotakingfirst-teamhonorsandMartinezearningsecond-teamaccolades.DeStiobecameCornell’sfirstfirst-teamselectionsince2002,whileMartinezearnedthedistinctionofbecomingCornell’sfirst-everthree-timeMideastRegionAll-Americanselection.MartinezwasalsonamedtotheNFHCASeniorAll-Starteam,becomingjustoneoftwoIvyLeagueplayersnamedtothe38playersquad.CornellalsohadfiveplayersnamedAll-Ivy,themostselectionsinprogramhistory.DeStio,aunanimousselection,wasjoinedonthefirst-teambyMartinezandgoalkeeperMelanieJue’10,whileforward Abbi Horn ’09 earned second-team honors and midfielder KateThompson ’11 was an honorablementionselection. In2007,Cornellcompletedtheseasonwitha10-7recordoverallandamarkof5-2intheconferencetofinishtiedforsecondintheleaguerankingsforthesecondstraightyear.TheBigRedpostedawinningconferencerecordforthethirdstraightyear,markingthefirsttimeinprogramhistorythattheBigRedhashadthreestraightwinningseasonsinIvyplay.Theteamtiedthethen-schoolmarkforoverallvictories(10)andconferencevictories(5)inaseasonandfeaturedtwoimportantwinsasCornellsnappeda16-gamewinlessstreakagainstthen-No.17Princetonbeforedefeatingthen-No.19Syracuseforthefirsttimesincethe1983season.Hornibrookalsonotchedher200thcareerwin(her29thwiththeBigRed)onOct.28,astheBigReddefeatedSiena,4-2. FourBigRedplayersearnedpostseasonIvyLeaguehonorsin2007,asMartinezandBrennaGulotta’09werenamedfirst-teamAll-Ivy,whileThompsonandDeStiomadethehonorablementionsquad.Theselectionsmarkedthefirsttimesince1997thatCornellhadtwofirst-teamers,whilethefourtotalselectionswerethemostsince1991.GulottaandMartinezthenwentontobenamedtothe2007Longstreth/NFHCADivisionIMideastRegionAll-Americasecondteam.Itwasthefirsttimesince2002thatCornellhasplacedmorethanoneplayeronanall-regionteam. In2006,theBigRedfinishedtheseasontiedforsecondintheIvyLeaguewitha4-3record,givingCornellback-to-backwinningconferencerecordsforthefirsttimeinprogramhistory.Despiteinjuriestoseveralkeyplayers,theteamstillbattleditswaytoa7-9record,andwashighlycompetitivegame-inandgame-outwithsixofitslossescomingbyasinglegoal,includingthreeinovertime.Followingtheseason,Martinez,KatlynDonoghue`09andSarahMiller‘07allearnedsecond-teamAll-Ivyhonors. Injusthersecondseasonatthehelm,CoachHornibrookledCornelltooneofitsbestseasonsinrecenthistory.Theteamsetathen-schoolrecordforwinswith10andtiedthemarkforIvyLeaguewinsatthetimewithfourvictoriesvs.AncientEightop-ponents.Theteamwonsevenmorecontestsin2005thanithadinthepreviousyear,makingitthegreatestsingle-seasonturnaroundinprogramhistory.TheBigRedalsoimprovedonthedefensiveendofthefield,holdingopponentstonearly50percentfewershotsthanthepreviousseason.AlyssaDePaola’09wasnamedfirst-teamAll-Ivy,whileBlairCorcoran’06andMartinezgarneredsecond-teamaccolades.Martinezalsoearnedsecond-teamSTX/NFCHAAll-Regionhonors. TheBigRedmadegreatcompetitivestridesinHornibrook’sfirstyearwithwinsoverLehigh,YaleandRutgers.DanielleDunn 05earnedfirst-teamAll-Ivyandsecond-teamSTX/NFCHAAll-Regionhonors,whileclassmateGinaTestawasanhonorablementionAll-Ivypick.Also,theCornelloffensescorednearlyahalfgoalpergamemorethanitdidduringthe2003campaign. afterasuccessfulnine-yearstintasheadcoachatHoughtonCollegefrom1995-2003.Herteamsearnedarecordof111-39-4duringthattime,includingaschool-record16winsin2003.In1997,hersmallcollegeteamdefeatedtwo-timedefendingNCAADivisionIIchampionBloomsburgUniversity2-1,andrecordedasimilarfeatin1998,defeatingNCAADivisionIIrunner-upLockHaven4-2.HerHoughtonsquadsposted15-winseasonsin1998,1999and2001. AgraduateoftheUniversityofNewBrunswickinCanada,shewasafour-timeall-conferenceandfour-timenationaltournamentall-starselection.ShewasthePrinceEdwardIslandFemaleAthleteoftheYearin1980and1981.HornibrookwasalsoselectedtoplayontheCanadiannationalteamandcompetedwiththesquadfrom1979-83.Theteamearnedabronzemedalinthe1981EuropeanChampionshipsinBerlinbeforefinishingfifthatthe1981WorldCupinArgentina.Shealsoplayedonthe1986CanadiannationalchampionshipBritishColumbiateam. Followinghercollegiateandnationalteamexperiences,HornibrookstartedhercoachingcareerasthecoachoftheNewBrunswickprovincialteam,leadingthesquadtoagoldmedalatthe1989CanadaGames. Shewentontocoachatheralmamater,leadingtheteamtoa60-8-6recordfrom1990-1995.Duringthatperiod,herteamsneverlostaconferencegame,winningfiveAUAAconferencetitlesandtwosilvermedalsattheCanadianUniversitychampionships.Twenty-fiveofherplayersearnedall-conferencehonorsandonewasselectedasthenationalplayeroftheyear.Elevenofherplayerswerealsojuniorandseniornationalteammembers.Shewasselectedastheconferencecoachoftheyearfourtimesandwasonceselectedasthenationaluniversitycoachoftheyear. Donnaandherhusband,Dwight,whoisthemen’ssoccercoachatCortlandState,currentlyresideinLansingwiththeirtwodaughters,KathrynandEmily.

MaryMcCracken,formerassociateheadcoachatSyracuseUniversity,entersherthirdseasonwiththeBigRedasanassistantcoachafterhelpingCornelltotwoofitsbestseasonsinprogramhistory.

In2008,theBigRedcompletedtheseasonwithan11-5recordoveralland6-1markintheconferencetofinishinsecondplaceintheleaguerankingsforthethirdstraightyear.TheBigRedalsopostedawinningconferencerecordforthefourthstraightyear,markingthefirsttimeinprogramhistorythattheBigRedhashadfourstraightwinningseasonsinIvyplay.Theteamsettheschoolmarkforoverallvictories(11)andconferencevictories(6)inaseasonaswellassettingtheschoolrecordforgoals(45),assists(38)andpoints(128)inaseason.

Stiomadethehonorablementionsquad.Theselectionsmarkedthefirsttimesince1997thatCornellhashadtwofirst-teamers,whilethefourtotalselectionswerethemostsince1991.GulottaandMartinezthenwentontobenamedtothe2007Longstreth/NFHCADivisionIMideastRegionAll-Americasecondteam.Itwasthefirsttimesince2002thatCornellhasplacedmorethanoneplayeronanall-regionteam.

McCrackenspent14seasonswiththeOrangefieldhockeyprogram,earningthepromotiontoassociateheadcoachafterservingasSU’stopassistantcoachfrom1993-2003.Duringhertenure,theOrangewonfourBigEastregular-seasonchampionshipsandmadethreetripstotheNCAATournament.

McCrackenwasheavilyinvolvedinthecoordinationoftheprogram’srecruitingeffortsandservedasthedirectoroftheOrangefieldhockeycampeachsummer.DuringhertimewithSyracuse,shewasdirectlyresponsiblefortherecruitmentof22playersthatreceivedregionalAll-Americahonors,whilehelpingtocoachanadditionalnineplayerstoregionalAll-Americastatus.Ofthose31players,12wentontobenamedAll-Americans,whilethreeotherswerenamedCoSIDAAcademicAll-Americans.

PriortoarrivingatSyracuse,McCrackenspentthreeyearsastheassistantfieldhockeyandassistantlacrossecoachattheUniversityofDelaware.

McCrackenbrokeintothecollegiatecoachingprofessionastheheadfieldhockeycoachatLaSalleUniversityfrom1988-89.

AnativeofPlymouthMeeting,Pa.,McCrackengraduatedfromOhioWesleyanin1979.Athree-sportathletefortheBishops,McCrackenwasafour-yearletterwinnerinfieldhockey,helpingherteamtotheOhioStateChampionshipasafreshmanandearningGreatLakesFieldHockeyAssociationTeamhonorsallfourseasons.Shealsoplayedonthewomen’sbasketballandlacrosseteamsforthreeseasons,andwasnamedtotheMidwestLacrosseTeamallthreeyears.In1986,shewasinductedintoOWU’sAthleticHallofFame.

2009 Big Red Season Outlook TheBigRedentersthe2009seasonwiththeconfidence,experienceanddepthtocompetefortheIvyLeaguetitle.Comingoffa2008campaigninwhichCornellwent11-5overalland6-1intheconferencetofinishinsecondplaceintheleaguerankingsforthethirdstraightyear,theBigRedwillbenefitfromthereturnofeightstartersand14totalletterwinners.Still,the2009editionwillhavetobeatitsbesttooutshinethe2008squad,whichsetschoolrecordsforoverallvictories(11),conferencevictories(6),goals(45),assists(38)andpoints(128)inaseason. “Ithinkweareverysolidinallfourareasandshouldhavegreatbalancethisyear,”saidheadcoachDonnaHornibrook.“Wehavesomereallygoodexperienceandwe’vebeeninthetitlehuntforthelastcoupleofyears,soIdon’tthinkwe’regoingtobeintimidated.Wehavesomeareaswherewillneedtomakeadjustmentsbecausewedidlosesomekeyplayerstograduation,butIdofeellikewehavethepersonnelnecessarytostepupandgetthejobdone.”

ATTACK Theattackwillbeledby2008first-teamMideastRegionAll-AmericaselectionCatieDeStio.Aunanimousfirst-teamAll-Ivyselectionandtheteam’sOffensiveMVPayearago,DeStioledCornellandrankedfifthintheleaguewith10goals.Shealsochippedinateam-highsixassists,goodforseventhintheconference,foratotalof26points,rankingherninthoverallinCornellhistoryforgoalsandpointsinasingle-season.ShealsoledtheBigRedingoals(5)andassists(2)duringconferenceplayandregisteredatleastonepointinsixofCornell’slasteightgames.“CatieisoneofthebestathletesintheIvyLeague,”saidHornibrook.“Sheistheplayerotherteamswillfocuson,butthebestthingaboutCatieisthatshe’soneofthemostunselfishplayersontheteamandshe’salwayslookingforherteammates.Wesawalotofdevelopmentinthespringwithherreceivingskillsandherstickskillsandshe’sworkedonalotofnewshotsanddevelopednewfinishingskillsthatwillmakeherevenmoreofascoringthreat.” JoiningDeStioDeStioontheforwardlinewillbebeseniortri-captainKelleyKantarian. MIDFIELD ThemidfieldiseasilythedeepestpositionfortheBigRedin2009,witheightplayersvyingforplayingtime.Leadingthemidfieldwillbetwo-timeAll-IvyselectionKateThompson.ASasophomore,ThompsonledtheBigRedwithsixassistsandaddedthreegoalsfor12points.HerlonegoalduringIvyLeagueplayprovedtobethegame-winneragainstPenn.Aphenomenaltwo-wayplayeratthecenter-midfieldposition,Thompsonusesheroutstandingstickskillsandathleticismtodistributetheball inthemiddle,whiledefendingsomeof thebestplayersintheconference.“Kateisjustaworkhorseforusinthemiddleofthefield,”saidHornibrook.Sheseesthegameverywellandwehopethatthisseasonshewillbecometheplayerthatdistributestheballforusoutofthemidfield.Sheisakeyplayerforusasshecontinuestobecomeoneofthebestmidfieldersintheleague.” JuniorsMattieProdanovicandSaraSanders,alongwithseniortri-captainKatieKirnanwillbeexpectedtoseequalityplayingtimeatthemidfieldalongwithThompson. BACK AninstrumentalpartoftheBigReddefensesincesteppingoncampus,seniortri-captainNatalieAppletonwilllooktotakeonanewroleasthevocalleaderoftheteamassheorganizesthedefense.Asajunior,shesawactionin15games,making13starts.Shewastheanchorofadefensiveunitthatallowedlessthan10shotspergameandjust5.4penaltycornerspergame,thebestschoolaveragesincethestatbegantoberecordedin1998.Thankstoherroleastheteam’sstick-stopperonpenaltycorners,shefinishedtheyearwithfiveassists,goodforthirdontheteamandninthintheIvyLeague.“Nataliehasbeenakeypartofoursuccessoverthepastthreeseasons,”saidHornibrook.“Sheisagreatopen-fieldtacklerwhorarelycreatesafoulunlessit’sanecessaryfoul.We’rehopingforbigthingsfromherinherfinalseasonandwewillbelookingtohertotakeoverasthevocalleaderoftheteam.” JoiningAppletononthebacklinewillbejuniorsStephanieSandersandLizSchovee,aswellasfreshmanAlexRobson. Stephanie Sanders moved into a starting role for the Big Red as a sophomore, getting the start in all 16games.“Stephaniecouldplayanynumberofpositions,butsheisoneofthebestoutsidebacksintheleague,”saidHornibrook.“Shehadveryfewfoulsagainstherlastyearandsherarelyturnstheballover.Sheisveryreliablewithgreatpoiseandgoodattackskills.” Schoveeusedherathleticismandworkethictoseeasignificantincreaseinplayingtimelastseason,playingin12gamesandmakingfourstarts.“Lizplayedsomekeymomentsforuslastyearandhadaverygoodspring,”saidHornibrook.“She’sreallytoughontheleftsideandsheisoneofourfastestkids.Sheisalsoverypoisedandhasanicehit,soIthinkshe’llbecomeamoreconsistentcontributorforusinthefall.” Robson was a four-year starter for Gleneagle Secondary School and led her team to four straight districtchampionships.Athree-yearteamcaptain,sheearnedherteam’sCaptainAwardtwiceandwastwicenamedAcademicAthleteoftheYear.Asasenior,sheledherteamtoathird-placefinishattheProvincialtournament.“Alexhasgreatsizeandreachwithanicehitandalotofexperienceasadefender,”explainedHornibrook.“Sheisaplayerwhowecandevelopintoareallysolidcentraldefender.”

GOALIES TheBigRedbringsbacktwosolidgoaliesasincumbentstarterMelanieJueandlastseason’sback-upAlexBottereturntotheteam. Aftertakingatwo-yearhiatusfromfieldhockey,JuejoinedtheBigRedfieldhockeyteampriortothe2008seasonandimmediatelytookoverastartingrolein-betweenthepipes.Atwo-sportathleteatCornell,shespentmuchoftheseasonrankedinthetop-20inthenationinbothsavepercentageandgoals-againstaveragebeforefinishing24thoverallwitha.742savepercentageand29thinthecountrywitha1.66GAA.Shepostedan11-4recordwiththreeshutouts,includingoneinIvyLeagueaction.ShewasnamedtheIvyLeagueRookieoftheWeekonSept.9afterhelpingtheBigRedopentheseasonwitha1-1record.Inherfirstcollegiatestart,shemade19savesagainstNo.19Albanybeforedroppinga1-0decisiontotheGreatDanes.The19saveswerethemostsinceKaitlinTierneystopped20shotsvs.PrincetononOct.21,2000,andwerethethird-highestnumberofsavesinthenationduringthe2008seasonbyagoalieinasinglegame.Forherefforts,shewasnamedfirst-teamAll-Ivy,aswellastheteam’sco-DefensiveMVPfollowingtheseason.“Melanieisagreatathletethatcamebacktofieldhockeyaftertwoyearsandhadasolidseason,”explainedHornibrook.“She’sagamerwiththeathleticismandinstinctstobeasolidgoalie.Herstyleisnotalwaysorthodox,butIthinkafterhavingoneseasonunderherbelt,weexpecttoseehergetmoreintoagroovethisyearandtakethenextstepinherdevelopment.Shereadsthegamewellandshe’sagoodcommunicator,butoneofherbestassetsishercompetivenessandtheteamfeedsoffofthat.” Bottesaw117minutesofactionasafreshman,includingacompletegameperformanceagainstFairfield.Shemadeninesavesandallowedjustonegoalfora0.76goals-againstaverageanda.900savepercentage.Followingtheseason,sheearnedtheteam’sClassOf’91Cupastheplayerwiththemostpromisingfuture.“Alexisareallygood,fundamentallysoundgoaliethatplayshasgoodhandsandplaysheranglesandclearstheballreallywell,”saidHornibrook.“Shehadareallysolidfreshmanyearandwillchallengeformoreplayingtimethisseason.”
