Who are we?Groundwork supports communities by working with partners to help improve the quality of people’s lives, their prospects and potential and the places where they live, work and play.

3

...is of a society of sustainable communities whichare vibrant, healthy and safe, which respect the local and global environment and where individuals and enterprise prosper.

We work alongside communities, public bodies, private companiesand voluntary sector organisations to deliver projects and programmes that benefit:

People - creating opportunities for people to learn new skills and become more active citizens

Places - delivering environmental improvements that create cleaner, safer, greener neighbourhoods

Prosperity - helping businesses and individuals fulfil their potential

Each of the three Greater Manchester Groundwork Trusts is a not-for-r-profit organisation consisting of a partnership of the public, private and voluntary sectors with its own board of trustees.

Environmental Business Services is part of the work of each trustand concentrates on improving the business environment, thus reducing its effect on climate change and improving the local economy by making companies safer for employees, less intrusive to the surroundingpopulation and more efficient - leading to increased wealth andjob opportunities. As part of Groundwork’s commitment to regenerating communities and delivering sustainable development, we encourage companies and their employees to be more aware of their environmental impact - bothglobally and locally. And, as a non-profit organisation, profits fromthe business services are reinvested in community projects, some of which are detailed throughout the calendar.

casestudyManchester Rusk Company

The ChallengeGroundwork EBS has been working with Manchester Rusk Co. Ltd since

2002 and has previously helped the company achieve improvements in waste management. Following this work, further potential was identified

for reducing lost energy consumption from their power packaging equipment, IT system, lighting, air and production equipment.

The ProcessThe company employed process engineers to carry out feasibility studies

of the factory and measure the amount of waste heat produced. They then investigated a heat exchange system whereby waste heat

could be collected and converted into energy, which is then utilised to reheat water to be used back in the process.

The ResultThe company has reduced energy bills by 63% through improved energy

efficiency. This has reduced the amount of energy used and, in turn, reduced carbon emissions by at least 40 tonnes per annum.

This is set to further increase by approx. 6.8 tonnes with the introduction of renewable technologies.

SummaryEnergy costs have been reduced by more than 63% through a combined programme of improvement. This has safeguarded 19 jobs and increased process efficiency at the plant. It has also helped Manchester Rusk take a

further step towards their goal of becoming carbon neutral.

unique focal pointcommunity benefits

Rainbow Park

The ChallengeAfter the demolition of a block of flats, the land that was left was simply grassed over - leaving the local community to challenge Groundwork to

make better use of the space.

The ProcessResidents helped design play facilities for the space, after local children

and parents were taken on a tour of other play areas. They helped create the rainbow and sun entrance, planned the celebrations and named the

space ‘Rainbow Park’.

The ResultThe playground has provided a focal point for the local community

- giving them a place to meet. There is also an accessible swing for disabled children and a range of unique artwork to enjoy.

SummaryThis project brought the whole

community together. Residentsplanned the park, Action Factoryhelped create artwork designed

by the people who live in the areaand the local children named thepark and designed the entrance.
