TECH TRADITIONS
The Georgia Tech fight song grew out of an old folkballad, “The Sons of the Gamboliers.”Howard D. Cutter, a member of Tech’s first graduatingclass (Mechanical Engineering, 1892), wrote in theNovember-December 1942 issue of the Georgia TechAlumnus that the “Ramblin’ Wreck” had its originsduring the first two years after Tech opened in 1888,inspired when the entire student body traveled toAthens to see Tech’s baseball team defeat Georgia.
By the early 1900s, “Ramblin’ Wreck” was an estab-lished tradition. The earliest existing published versionof the song appeared in the Blueprint, the Institute’syearbook, in 1908.In 1910, Michael A. Greenblatt, Tech’s first bandmas-ter, discovered the band playing “Ramblin’ Wreck” tothe tune of “Sons of the Gamboliers,” and made hisfirst arrangement of the song in the form of a handwrit-ten manuscript.
When Frank Roman succeeded Greenblatt as band-master in 1911, he wrote a new adaptation of “Ramblin’Wreck,” accompanied by many trumpet flourishes, that became nationally known. His is the version thatcontinues to be popular today.
The fame of the song spread to such proportionsthat in 1959 it was sung by Richard Nixon and Nikita
Khrushchev at their historic face-to-face meeting inMoscow. In 1984, the law firm of Newton, Hopkins &Ormsby investigated the copyright of “Ramblin’ Wreck”and found that a number of people have had variousversions of the song copyrighted. The original versionof the song is in the public domain and can be playedwithout payment of royalties.
In the fall of 1891, before Georgia Tech organizeda football team of its own, a game was scheduledbetween Auburn and Georgia. A rivalry was alreadyestablished in baseball between Tech and Georgia, soTech students were invited to the game to cheer, ofcourse, for Auburn.
The students appointed a committee to recommendcolors to be worn and cheers to be used at the game. The committee suggested white and gold, and about200 students attended the game wearing those colors.
In 1893, when Georgia Tech’s football team playedGeorgia for the first time, a group of young women fromthe Lucy Cobb Institute for Girls attended the game tocheer for Tech, dressed in white and gold.
I’m a Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell of anengineer,
A helluva, helluva, helluva, helluva, hell of an engineer,Like all the jolly good fellows, I drink my whiskey clear,I’m a Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell of an
engineer.
Oh, if I had a daughter, sir, I’d dress her in White and Gold,And put her on the campus, to cheer the brave and bold. But if I had a son, sir, I’ll tell you what he’d do.He would yell, “To Hell with Georgia,” like his daddy used
to do.
Oh, I wish I had a barrel of rum and sugar three thousandpounds,
A college bell to put it in and a clapper to stir it around.I’d drink to all good fellows who come from far and near.I’m a ramblin’, gamblin’, hell of an engineer.
Oh well it’s up with the White and GoldDown with the Red and BlackGeorgia Tech is out for the victoryWe’ll drop the battle axe on Georgia’s headWhen we meet her, our team is sure to beat herDown on the old farm there will be no soundTill our bow-wows rip through the airWhen the battle is over, Georgia’s team will be found Withthe Yellow Jackets swarming around.

TECH TRADITIONS
September 30, 1961 versus Rice. For the firsttime, the official Rambling Wreck car led theGeorgia Tech football team onto Grant Field. It’s happened at every home game since.
The event did not establish a new tradition at GeorgiaTech, but it cemented one. The vehicle, a restored1930 Model A Ford Sport Coupe, was Tech’s first of-ficial Rambling Wreck car.
Since that time, the Rambling Wreck car has joined amuch older tradition-the Yellow Jacket-as an officialschool mascot.
The term Rambling Wreck was first applied to a 1914Ford owned by Floyd Field, Dean of Men. In the firstpublished reference to the car as the “Rambling Wreck”in 1927, the Technique student newspaper spoke outagainst Field when he considered trading the car, buthe did it anyway.
Tech officials decided in the late 1950s that the schoolneeded an official car that would be known foreveras the Rambling Wreck. Dean of Students JamesDull began a search for a pre-1940 vintage model,
and finally found one-parked in front of his apartmentbuilding. The owner, Capt. Ted J. Johnson, a Delta AirLines pilot, had just finished restoring the 1930 FordCabriolet Sport Coupe, which he intended to give to hisson as a gift.
Johnson decided to let Tech have the car for $1,000 inMay, 1961. He later returned the purchase price in theform of a contribution to the Alexander-Tharpe Fund, fulfilling a desire to go on record as having given theRambling Wreck to Georgia Tech.
Conflicting accounts exist as to the origins andbeginnings of the Yellow Jacket, but the nickname didnot grow out of the familiar six-legged insect; rather, the insect mascot, known as “Buzz,” grew out of thenickname. The first known reference to Tech studentsas “Yellowjackets” appeared in the Atlanta Constitutionin 1905 and came into common usage at that time. Thename, spelled as one word, was first used to describesupporters who attended Tech athletic events, dressedin yellow coats and jackets. The actual mascot wasconceived at a later, undetermined date.

HEAD COACH - PAUL JOHNSON
Paul Johnson wasnamed Georgia Tech’s12th head coach onDecember 7, 2007 afterpreviously serving sixseasons as head coachof the U.S. Naval Acad-emy, where he led theMidshipmen to a levelof success they hadnot seen in decades.Johnson’s first-headcoaching job cameat Georgia Southern, where in five seasonshe led the Eagles to two
I-AA national championships.
In 12 seasons overall as a head coach, Johnson owns acareer record of 116-43 (.729). The only coach to winmore games in his first 12 seasons as a head coachwas Nebraska’s Tom Osborne.
Prior to the start of the 2008 season, Sports Illustratedprojected Georgia Tech to finish 3-9 and the ACCmedia picked the Yellow Jackets to finish fourth in theCoastal Division. However, Johnson directed Tech toa 9-4 record, a share of the Coastal Division title anda Chick-fil-A Bowl berth. Johnson’s first Yellow Jacketteam beat three nationally-rankedopponents - Florida State, Miamiand Georgia - over the final fourgames of the regular season. Thewin over Georgia snapped a seven-year losing skid to Tech’s in-staterival.
Almost as soon as Johnson washired, the pundits questioned ifJohnson’s option-based spread of-fense would work on the ACC level. Those questions came even thoughNavy racked up mind-numbing of-fensive numbers, leading the NCAAin rushing three straight years from2005 to 2007, mostly against ACCand other BCS-level competition.
Johnson quieted those critics almostas soon as the 2008 season kicked-off and certainly after Tech closedthe regular season by combining for86 points and 881 rushing yardsin games against nationally-rankedMiami and Georgia. The YellowJackets, with freshmen and sopho-mores manning every skill positionand behind a patch-work offensiveline, averaged 273.2 rushing yards
per game, ranking fourth nationally and first in theACC. Georgia Tech also led the ACC in total offense(372.5 ypg).
Johnson, who won more games than any first-yearcoach in Georgia Tech history, was named the ACCCoach of the Year and the CBSSportsline.com NationalCoach of the Year in 2008.
“Paul Johnson is the best fit, the best choice for theGeorgia Tech head coaching position,” Georgia Techathletic director Dan Radakovich said. “He will educateyoung men, represent Georgia Tech at the highest level,he will win football games and play for championships.”
Prior to Johnson’s arrival in Atlanta, he earned unprec-edented success at Navy.
Johnson coached six years at Navy, compiling a 45-29record. He took over a Navy football program that wascoming off the worst two-year span in its 123-yearhistory (1-20) and had recorded just two winningseasons in the last 20 years. After a 2-10 mark inJohnson’s first year, the Midshipmen achieved whatmany thought was no longer possible at an Academy.Johnson brought the Midshipmen back into the nationalspotlight with a 43-19 (.694) record over the last four-plus years.

HEAD COACH - PAUL JOHNSON
Before arriving at Annapolis, Johnson served as head coach at Georgia Southern from 1997 to 2001. At Georgia Southern, Johnson posted a 62-10 (.861) record, won two straight I-AA National Championships (1999 and 2000), five consecutive Southern Confer-ence Championships and was named the Division I-AA National Coach of the Year four straight years (1997-2000).
After Johnson took over as head coach at Georgia Southern in 1997, he returned the Eagle program to national prominence statistically and in the won-lost ledger. In addition to Georgia Southern’s 62-10 mark, the Eagles scored 2,855 points (39.7 points per game), picked up 25,941 rushing yards (360.3 yards per game), 7,816 passing yards (108.6 yards per game) and 33,757 total yards (468.8 yards per game). GSU scored 380 touchdowns in the Johnson Era, an average of 5.3 per game. The Eagles’ scoring margin under Johnson was +21.5 (39.7-18.5).
Johnson picked up a milestone victory in the 2000 I-AA National Championship Game against Montana. Not only did the 27-25 victory give Georgia Southern its second straight national title, but it was also Johnson’s 50th career win in four seasons. Only three other coaches in the history of Division I football won 50 or more games in four seasons -- Walter Camp (1888-1891, 54-2 at Yale), George Woodruff (1892-1895, 53-4 at Penn) and Bob Pruett (1996-99, 50-4 at Marshall).
Johnson was previously Navy’s offensive coordinator in 1995 and 1996 and his spread offense made an immediate impact, breaking five school records during the Mids’ five-win season in 1995.
Prior to joining the Navy staff, Johnson spent eight seasons as the offensive coordinator at the University of Hawai’i (1987-94). He helped guide the Rainbows to their first Western Athletic Conference title and their first bowl appearance, coordinating an explosive offense that broke or equaled more than 160 school records.
After first arriving at Georgia Southern in 1983 as de-fensive line coach, Johnson was promoted to offensive coordinator in 1985. Under his tutelage, record-setting quarterback Tracy Ham and the Eagle offense re-wrote the school record book while averaging 435 total yards and 36 points per contest. Georgia Southern rolled to a combined 26-4 record and captured a pair of I-AA titles in 1985-86.
Johnson’s coaching career began when he was offen-sive coordinator and line coach at his alma mater, Avery County (N.C.) High School, in 1979-80. He accepted the offensive coordinator’s position at Lees-McRae Junior College in 1981, leading his offensive unit to
a sixth-place national standing among NJCAA total offense leaders.
Johnson, a native of Newland, N.C., earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Western Carolina in 1979 and a Master’s degree in health and physical education from Appalachian State in 1982. He and wife, Susan, are the parents of a daughter, Kaitlyn.
