Head Coach Bear Grassl returns for his eighth year at the helm of the Sonoma State University volleyball program in 2009. The reign-ing CCAA Volleyball Coach of the Year, Grassl led his team to a 23-7 record and their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 15 seasons in 2008.

The Seawolves got off to a hot start last season in which they won 14 of their first 15 matches. As the season went on, Sonoma State stayed close in the CCAA title race but went 9-5 the rest of the season and finished tied for second in the conference (15-5). However, the Seawolves had a stellar home record, going 14-1 on the hardwood of the Seawolf Gym. Sonoma State also appeared in the NCAA Division II West Regional Tournament for the first time since 1993 but a first-round loss to conference-foe Chico State knocked the Seawolves out of national title contention.

Grassl took the reigns in 2002 and led the Seawolves to a 15-14 record. He repeated the feat in 2003 (15-14) and then went 14-12 in ‘04. In 2005 and 2006, the Seawolves struggled in the win column playing in the tough California Collegiate Athletic Associa-tion with a young squad.

In seven seasons at Sonoma State, Grassl has coached 20 All-Conference performers and has also seen his players earn numerous Academic All-District honors in the past few seasons.

A 1991 graduate of Sonoma State, Grassl was head coach at El Molino High School from 1992-2001. During that span, he guided the Lions to six Sonoma County League championships, seven North Coast Section titles, five Northern California champion-ships and one California state championship, in 1999. His career coaching mark at El Molino was an impressive 267-78.

No. 15 cal state l.a. 0September 18, 2008 • Rohnert Park, Calif.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Let Thursday night’s performance be proof that the 2008 Sonoma State volleyball team is for real. The Seawolves swept No. 15 Cal State L.A. in straight sets, 25-20, 25-18, 25-20 to extend their winning streak to six in a row and improve to 10-1, 3-0 CCAA. The Golden Eagles fall for the first time this season, dropping to 9-1, 2-1 CCAA.

It was the first-ever Sonoma State sweep of Cal State L.A. and just the fifth all-time victory in 30 matches. The Seawolves have also set a school-record for the best start in school history with ten wins in their first eleven matches. The 2001 team was 9-2 after eleven. Finally, the Seawolves are 3-0 in CCAA play for the first time since 2002, Bear Grassl’s first year at the helm.

The first half of the first set was back and forth with each team going on mini-runs. With the score tied at 16, Ali Walker’s kill gave the Seawolves a lead they would not relinquish. SSU closed the door by scoring the final four points, three of them coming on Golden Eagle miscues.

SSU jumped out to a 7-2 lead in set two and hardly looked back, extending their lead to as many as eight at 17-9.

Tied at 12 in set three, the Seawolves scored three straight points, again on CSULA hitting errors. They wouldn’t trail the rest of the way as Walker, Sather, and Fox were just too much.

Walker finished the night with ten kills and 12 digs. She also had a couple of service aces and a solo block. Kristy Sather had a team-high 11 kills and Lindsay Brown, despite being hampered by an injured ankle, guided the offense with 30 assists. Devin Scully and Taylor Krenwinkel were also solid, each posting 15 digs.

The Golden Eagles were led by Gabriela Bulawczyk, who finished with a game-high 12 kills. CSULA hit .048 for the match, compared to .206 for the Seawolves.

Set one was one of streaks as Sonoma opened on a 4-0 run only to see the ‘Jacks answer with a seven-point spurt of their own. The Seawolves grabbed control of the set with their own 7-0 streak on their way to the 25-12 win. Sonoma outscored Humboldt 21-5 down the stretch.

The Seawolves went up 5-0 in the second set and never really looked back. Though Humboldt would battle in the middle, cutting the lead to two points at 17-15, the Seawolves had more than enough firepower, ending on an 8-1 run to get the win.

The third set was the best of the match, with the ‘Jacks leading by as many as six at 11-5 and 15-9. The Seawolves proceeded to find their stride, reeling off a 9-1 run that gave them a lead they would not relinquish.

October 18, 2008 • Rohnert Park, Calif.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- In front of an electric Seawolf Gym crowd, the Sonoma State volleyball team put the finishing touches on a season sweep of rival Chico State with a thrilling three sets to one win over the Wildcats on Friday night. After dropping the first set, the Seawolves stormed back with three straight to take a 24-26, 30-28, 26-24, 25-18 win. The victory boosts the Seawolves’ record to 16-4, 8-3 CCAA. The Wildcats drop to 14-7, 7-4 CCAA.

The Seawolves improve to a perfect 11-0 at home on the season. SSU entered the match ranked No. 6 in the initial NCAA Pacific region poll. Chico came in at No. 5.

Sonoma State looked golden in the first set, leading 24-23 and serving set point before three quick Wildcat points left the Seawolves stunned and in a 1-0 hole.

It looked like it might be ‘deja vu all over again’ in the second when SSU took another 24-23 only to see the Wildcats take a point. SSU served set point again at 25-24 and 26-25 while the Wildcats tried for the set win with serves at 27-26 and 28-27. Trailing 28-27, Sonoma’s Kristy Sather pounded home a kill to tie things up. Lindsay Brown then served two straight aces to steal the set and bring the Seawolves even in the match at one set apiece.

Chico led for most of the third set, expanding their advantage to as many as seven points at 15-8 before the Seawolves began chipping away. Three straight points drew SSU to within one at 22-21, but then the Wildcats scored a couple to bring up set point at 24-21. The Seawolves then proceeded to reel off five in a row, the last coming on a kill by Marianne Fox to take the set, 26-24.

The set four collapse seemed to take the wind out of Chico’s sails as SSU raced to a 7-2 lead in the fourth set and never really looked back. The Wildcats would get within three a couple of times, but Sather and freshman Brooke Moore were solid down the stretch, giving the Seawolves a comparatively comfortable 25-18 win.

Sather paced the Seawolves with 18 kills. She also had three blocks and hit .261 for the night. Fox was brilliant as well, posting 15 kills and a .324 hitting percentage. Lindsay Brown guided the offense with 47 assists and Taylor Krenwinkel found her way to 30 digs.

The Wildcats got 68 of their 70 kills from five players, all of them in double digits. Makenzie Snyder led the way with 17 kills and both Gillian Heydorff and Crystal Trifeletti added 14. Erica Brick had 62 assists in the defeat.

sAN FRANCISCO STATE 2November 1, 2008 • San Francisco, Calif.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif- The Sonoma State volleyball team came from a two-set deficit on Saturday night to defeat San Francisco State in five at Main Gymnasium in San Francisco. The victory gives the Seawolves (20-5, 12-4 CCAA) 20 wins for the first time since 2001. The Gators drop their sixth straight to go to 11-14, 4-12 CCAA on the season.

The Seawolves defeated the Gators by scores of 24-26, 18-25, 25-15, 25-22, 15-9 to earn the milestone victory. They entered this weekend’s play ranked sixth in the latest NCAA regional rankings.

Sonoma looked headed for a victory in set one, leading 24-21 before a service error led the way to two Gator service aces. SF State would close out the set with a kill and then another ace.

With the momentum firmly in their corner, the Gators got out to a 13-5 lead in set two and cruised to the win, leav-ing the Seawolves a huge hole to climb out of.

Fortunately, the Seawolves were up to the task. The Seawolves blitzed to an early lead in the third set, then finished on a 16-9 kick to take the point.

In set four, the Seawolves again found themselves up big early, at 11-3. While the Gators would pull to within one at 20-19, the Seawolves were solid down the stretch, securing the victory and setting up a decisive fifth set.

Tied at nine in the fifth, consecutive kills by Lindsay Brown and Marianne Fox sparked a 6-0 Seawolf run that gave the team their clinching points.

The Seawolves got 20 kills from senior Kristy Sather and 12 from freshman Brooke Moore. Brown had 42 assists and Taylor Krenwinkel was tops with 25 digs.

Beth Perkins led the Gators with 15 kills.

November 8, 2008 • Rohnert Park, Calif.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- The Sonoma State volleyball team came up with perhaps their biggest win of the season on Saturday night, coming back to defeat No. 18 Cal Poly Pomona three sets to two in front of a raucous Seawolf Gym crowd. The Seawolves got 25 kills from star senior Kristy Sather as they improved to 21-6, 13-5 CCAA and strengthened their bid for their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1993. The Broncos drop to 16-7, 13-5 CCAA.

The Seawolves won by scores of 22-25, 25-14, 16-25, 26-24, 15-12 on Saturday night. Sather set a Sonoma State record with 86 attempts in the match, besting the old mark of 80 set by Lindsay Smith in 2003. Sather finished with 25 kills, nearly twice as many as any other player in the match.

After the teams split the first two sets, the Broncos rolled to a set three win to go up 2-1. They were looking good in the fourth as well, leading 23-22 and needing just two more points to close the door. That’s when the Seawolves dug deep to stave off elimination as kills by Sather and Marianne Fox set the stage for a block by Ali Walker and Brooke Moore that sealed the win.

Though it would be tied four times, the last at 10-10, the Seawolves wouldn’t trail in set five. Up 14-12, the Seawolves would turned to (who else?) Sather. Her 86th and final swing of the night set off a frenzied celebration on the court.

Sather wasn’t the only Seawolf to have a solid match as Rikki Buckshnis had 11 kills and Brooke Moore seemingly came up with big play after big play on her way to ten kills and four blocks.

Lindsay Brown had 45 assists, moving her to within three of the school’s career record (2,395 set by Tina Mesquita from 2002-04).

Ali Walker and Taylor Krenwinkel were also phenomenal on defense, finishing with 20 and 25 digs respectively.

Jenna Young led four Broncos in double figures with 13 kills. Vanessa Williams had 12 and Anne-Marie Hofmans also supplied 12. Williams was deadly at the net as well, bringing down 11 blocks. As a team, the Broncos had 17 blocks compared to just seven for the Seawolves.

SONOMA STATE 3HUMBOLDT STATE 0November 12, 2008 • Arcata, Calif.

ARCATA, Calif- It was a momentous night for the Sonoma State volleyball team on Wednesday in Arcata. In the Sea-wolves’ 3-0 win over the Lumberjacks, not only did junior Lindsay Brown break the program’s all-time assist record, but head coach Bear Grassl picked up the 100th win of his career. The victory pushes the Seawolves’ record to an impressive 22-6, 14-5 CCAA.

Despite the stellar record and third place standing in the CCAA, the Seawolves found out today that they somehow slipped two spots in the NCAA Regional Rankings this week to No. 8, meaning a win on Saturday in the season finale against UC San Diego may be crucial to the team’s NCAA Tournament hopes.

The Seawolves won 27-25, 25-18, 26-24 to complete a season sweep of the Lumberjacks (9-17, 7-12 CCAA).

Brown had 39 saves on Wednesday to give her 2,431 in her Sonoma State career, breaking Tina Mesquita’s old standard of 2,395. Just a junior, Brown has another season to expand her record.

Bear Grassl, in his seventh year at the helm, is now 100-90 in his career. With 22 wins this season, the Seawolves are tied for second in school history. The school record is 24 wins, set in 1997.

SONOMA STATE 3No. 11 UC SAN DIEGO 2

November 15, 2008 • Rohnert Park, Calif.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- In a season full of statement wins, the Sonoma State volleyball team saved the best for last on Saturday night as they came from two sets behind to beat No. 11 UC San Diego in front of an enthusiastic Seawolf Gym crowd. The win pushes the Seawolves’ record to 23-6, 15-5 CCAA. UC San Diego drops to 21-6, 15-5 CCAA.

The Seawolves fell behind early on Saturday, losing by the narrow margins of 25-23 and 27-25. Sunk in a 2-0 hole, the Seawolves clawed their way out with a 25-21 win in set three, setting up a thrilling set four.

In the fourth, Sonoma trailed 21-16 before a kill by Kristy Sather changed things. SSU proceeded to go on a 6-0 run on the serve of Kelsey Dall, taking a 22-21 lead. Serving set point, the Seawolves ended things on an Ali Walker kill.

In the fifth, the Seawolves fell behind 3-0, but again, they refused to go away, scoring five of the next six points to take a 5-4 lead. The score would be tied at nine, ten, and eleven before the Seawolves went on a 4-0 run to end the game. Brooke Moore and Lindsay Brown scored the final point with a block.

Sather, in her final home game, led all players with 22 kills. Rikki Buckshnis also turned in an efficient night, needing just 24 attempts to produce 14 kills for a .542 hitting percentage. Brown was tremendous all night at setter, racking up 52 assists and Taylor Krenwinkel led the way with 31 digs.

Rebecca Bailey paced the Tritons with 16 kills. Sylvia Schmidt had 15 and Hillary Williamson posted 14. Elaine Chen led with 58 assists and Roxanne Brunsting tied Krenwinkel for game-high honors with 31 digs.

The Seawolves out-hit the Tritons .236 to .195 and they had eight blocks to UCSD’s six.

Sonoma State finishes the regular season in a tie for second in the CCAA with UC San Diego and Cal Poly Po-mona. They will now await word from the NCAA regional committee regarding the post-season.

The Seawolves were ranked eighth in last week’s NCAA West Region rankings. Eight teams advance to the re-gional tournament, but there are three automatic berths. That means that since no Pac West is in the top eight, they will displace one of those teams. Cal State L.A., ranked No. 7 in last week’s polls, lost twice this weekend, possibly opening the door for Sonoma State’s first post-season berth since 1993.

CHICO STATE 3No. 25 SONOMA STATE 0

November 20, 2008 • San Bernardino, Calif.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif- The third time was the charm for Chico State as the Wildcats ended the best season in Sonoma State history on Friday with a 3-0 sweep of the Seawolves at the NCAA West Regional in San Bernardino. The Seawolves, who swept the Wildcats in the regular sea-son, see their season end at 23-7. Chico (21-10) advances to Cal State San Bernardino in the second round.

The Wildcats won the match by scores of 25-16, 25-23, 25-22.

Chico came out strong, steamrolling to a 25-16 win in the opener by hitting .333 as a team. Sets two and three would be much closer as the Seawolves battled, only to come up just short. In fact, the Seawolves out hit the Wildcats in the final two sets.

Sonoma also edged the Wildcats in blocks, 10-4, but they were unable to keep up with several outstanding per-formances, including Gillian Heydorff (16 kills), Makenzie Snyder (14 kills), and Erica Brick (43 assists).

The Seawolves got a team-high ten kills from Kristy Sather. Lindsay Brown had 43 assists and Taylor Krenwinkel was tops in the match with 24 digs.

*Records go back to the 1991 season.

The California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) has been one of the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences since its establishment in December 1938.

The 12-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State East Bay, Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Cal State Monterey Bay, Chico State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State, Humboldt State, and Sonoma State.

These institutions compete in seven women’s and six men’s CCAA-sponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring competition.

CCAA members have won 148 NCAA Championships (100 men, 48 women) which is far and away the most of any Division II conference.

The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter mem-bers UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Over the past 68 years, a number of institutions have been members of the CCAA, including Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine, UC Riverside, UC Davis and Grand Canyon University.

The CCAA Commissioner’s Office relocated from Southern California to Walnut Creek in July, 1998. Robert J. Hiegert is in his 13th year as the commissioner.
