CKEYDIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Year three of UOIT Ridgebacks men’s hockey has arrived! We are looking forward to another great season of fast paced University hockey at the Dog Pound!!!

As we move ahead, we look to continue to attract the best staff, coaches and students to our campus with the common focus of excellence for everyone. The vision includes our campus being Canada’s leader in athletics, recreation and wellness programs, combined with top flight athletic facilities. All of which will enrich the overall post secondary experience for our students.

Our intentions are to deliver a top rated, first class varsity hockey program which mirrors the reputation and success of our existing intercollegiate programs. This will build a sense of pride and community on campus and will support the successful recruitment of students. The sense of pride will also be emphasized within varsity athletics as it creates an active and vibrant atmosphere on campus.

Head Coach Marlin Muylaert and his coaching staff are back for another year, as they look to build off the momentum generated during the first two years of the program. The Campus Ice Centre, aptly nicknamed the Dog Pound, is the official home of the Ridgebacks and was packed with fans of all ages last year. The twin pad - size arena complex, located right on campus, has a seating capacity in the main rink for 550 with standing room for another 250 and makes for an exciting atmosphere at home games! There is also an amazing restaurant on the second level (Shagwells on the Ridge) that overlooks the ice. Each Ridgebacks team also has it’s own specially designed change room, coaching space, laundry and equipment storage.

This season, we look to continue building a winning tradition at UOIT with the caliber of coaching staff assembled along with the plan we have in place. We can’t do it however without great fans and supporters.

We hope you enjoy year three of Ridgebacks hockey!

LET’S GO RIDGEBACKS!

Brought in last season to provide offence from the blueline, Noyes certainly did not disappoint. Following the conclusion of the season, Noyes had emerged as the leading rookie defensmen scorer in OUA hockey and second in defensive scoring for the entire league. His prowess on the blueline helped bolster the Ridgebacks to sixth in OUA power play efficiency. For this he was rewarded with a spot on the OUA all-rookie team. Prior to joining UOIT, Noyes was named the Caley Cup player of the year in the Western Ontario Hockey League playing for the St. Mary’s Lincolns.

Whelan brings an abundance of talent to the Ridgebacks lineup as he enters his second year of play in the OUA. He is a very good skater with good stick skills and a quick shot. Versatility is also a strength of Whelan as he can play either wing and can also take a few shifts on the blueline if needed. In his freshman season with the Ridgebacks, Whelan led the team in penalty minutes with 82, punishing opposing teams on the forecheck with his strength and speed. In 2007-08, Whelan averaged over a point per game splitting time with the Hamilton Red Wings and Huntsville Otters.

A newcomer to the Ridgeback blueline, Barletta is looking to use his three years of OHL experience to his advantage as he embarks on his university career. Barletta has very good size and strength and will be looked upon to use his physical presence as he works to establish his role with the Ridgebacks. His OHL career with the Majors consisted of 103 games played where he picked up two goals, 10 assists and 53 penalty minutes. Barletta was known across the province as a hard hitting blue liner who was responsible in his own end. During the 2008-09 season, he played with the Newmarket Hurricanes of the OPJHL, where he notched two goals and 17 assists in 40 games, helping the team to a play-off berth with a 28-20-5 record.

Ball joins the Ridgeback blueline with a tremendous amount of junior experience behind him. He most recently played with the Hamilton Red Wings, racking up 171 penalty minutes in 42 games. Known to join the rush on the power play, Ball picked up 31 points in each of the past two seasons with the Wings. Last season, he totaled nine power play goals along with three game winning goals. Ball has also spent time with the Huntsville Otters, Oakville Blades, Markham Waxers, Newmarket Hurricanes and the Toronto Thunderbirds. Known as a big, strong defenseman equally who is capable of the big hit, the big shot or joining the rush, Ball should quickly establish himself as a very capable OUA defenseman.

Last season’s defensive player of the year returns for his third year as a member of the Ridgebacks. Legge is a player with great quickness, agility and instincts who uses those traits effectively to give him a big advantage over his opponents. A forward when he arrived with the Ridgebacks after playing with Port Hope, Legge converted to defence and quickly became one of the teams most valuable contributors. Legge is one of only four players to play in every game for the Ridgebacks since joining the OUA in 2007-08 and is the all-time leader in penalty minutes (90) and second in assists (20).Year GP G A PTS PIM PPG SHG GWG OTG SOG SOA Pt/G PIM/G2007-08 28 1 10 11 50 0 0 0 0 0 0 0.39 1.792008-09 28 0 10 10 40 0 0 0 0 0 0 0.36 1.43Totals 56 1 20 21 90 0 0 0 0 0 0 0.38 1.61

Turner has played a key role in the development of the Ridgeback team since year one. He has established himself as the team’s best face-off man and has been a part of the large majority of Ridgeback penalty kills during their first two years of competition. Turner not only chips in offensively, but was the Ridgebacks inaugural defensive player of the year in 2008. Turner is tied for fourth all-time in Ridgebacks scoring with 25 points in two seasons. He was also a 2008-09 CIS all-academic award winner.

Koch-Butterworth enters his third season with the Ridgebacks and is seeking a much bigger role with the team now that he has some additional OUA experience. The Uxbridge native has played 55 games for UOIT over the first two seasons, missing only one game last season. He is a very good skater and has good puck skills. His commitment to fitness should also help him in his quest to establish himself as a solid OUA player. In 2003-04, he had the opportunity to play on the international stage representing Switzerland on their national junior team.

Spaling has quietly emerged as an exceptional leader and a dominant player for the Ridgebacks. He is the UOIT all-time leader in points (37), assists (25) and games played (56). He has exceptional skating ability, especially for a player rounding out at 6’4. Additionally, Spaling is one of, if not the fittest athlete on the team. He is also very successful off the ice. Last year, Spaling won the UOIT overall scholastic award for the top GPA of any student-athlete. Prior to joining UOIT, the Drayton native was a member of the 2003/04 Ontario Champion Guelph Storm, going on to represent the OHL at the Memorial Cup. He was also a 2008-09 CIS all-academic award winner.

Freshman Scott Baker makes a return to competitive hockey following a two year layoff. Baker began his junior career in Oshawa as a member of the Legionnaires in 2003-04 where he picked up 16 goals and 14 assists in 47 games. During that season, Baker also played six games with the Oshawa Generals where he scored his first OHL goal. He spent the next two seasons in the OHL with the Belleville Bulls where he had 20 goals and 34 assists in 120 regular season games. As an 18 year old, Baker finished second in Belleville scoring. In spite of the brief time away from hockey, Baker has demonstrated great speed and a keen hockey sense that will only improve as he gets more games under his belt.

McCullough is another big, physical defenseman that the Ridgebacks recruited this year to bolster their blue line. John plays a very reliable defensive first game and definitely uses his reach and his physical presence to his advantage. McCullough, a native of Barrie, Ont., was the assistant captain for the 2008-09 Couchiching Terriers in the OPJHL. In 50 games played, he picked up three goals and 15 assists for 18 points with 99 penalty minutes, while his team finished in first place with a 38-3-7 record. In 2007-08, McCullough split time between the Newmarket Hurricanes and Couchiching where he amassed six points and 125 penalty minutes in 48 games. In the playoffs, McCullough was named the team’s MVP.

Wetering was a second half addition to the Ridgebacks last season but quickly established himself as a key contributor to the lineup. A strong left winger who can work the boards and the corners, watch for Wetering’s offensive output to increase dramatically with some OUA game experience now behind him. Wetering joined UOIT after four seasons in the OPJHL with the Toronto Junior Canadiens and Wexford Raiders. In two years with the Canadiens, he averaged almost a point per game with 91 points.

In two years with the Ridgebacks, Spencer has proven day after day that he is one of the hardest workers in OUA hockey. The Woodville native has great speed and uses it to be first in on the forecheck looking to create loose pucks for his teammates. Spencer also plays the body very effectively and can be counted on to finish his hits. Last season, Spencer chipped in offensively with two goals and four assists. In his midget career, he won an all-Ontario championship with Mariposa, scoring a hat-trick in the championship final.

Explosive skater, great stick skills and a exceptionally strong are all descriptive of Vatri’s game, which led him to winning the OUA western conference rookie of the year award and earning a spot on the OUA all-rookie team in 2008-09. In spite of missed games at the beginning of the season, Vatri still managed to lead all Ridgebacks in scoring and established himself as one of the most exciting and dynamic players in OUA hockey. Vatri had an excellent junior career playing with Erie and Kingston of the OHL and Huntsville of the OPJHL. With Huntsville, Vatri scored 60 points in 35 games finishing in first place during the regular season.

Tereshyn made the lineup last year as an unknown commodity but quickly used his dedication and commitment to the team to make a real positive contribution to the Ridgebacks. With a year of experience under his belt, Tereshyn is looking to compete for more playing time this year. Prior to joining UOIT, Tereshyn was the assistant captain with the Scarborough Sabres who went on to win the Carnation Cup.

Bagshaw’s offensive production increased significantly in his second year despite missing nine conference games due to injury. The Ridgebacks captain is an exceptionally strong skating physical power forward who logs a lot of ice time as a key member of the Ridgeback full strength, power play and penalty kill units. He has won back-to-back team MVP awards and was named the 2008-09 UOIT athlete of the year. In his junior career with the Erie Otters, Bagshaw won a number of awards including the scholastic player of the year and most dedicated player. Additionally, Bagshaw won the Roger Neilson Memorial award as the OHL’s top academic player attending university or college in 2006-07.

A newcomer to the Ridgebacks lineup, Curran has shown early that he has the wheels to skate at the OUA level. Curran has spent the past two seasons with the Bowmanville Eagles. The 5’11 left winger had a breakout year in 2008/09, recording 16 goals and 20 assists. Curran is a smart player who can read the ice well and has shown throughout his career that he is not afraid to get involved in the physical game. Those assets should make the Port Perry an effective player at the OUA level.

Spade had an excellent freshman season with the Ridgebacks where he established himself as a defence first thinking blueliner who brings a terrific physical presence to the Ridgebacks roster. His ability to patrol the net area made him a real asset, especially in penalty kill situations. Spade spent four seasons in the OHL after being drafted by the Barrie Colts in the first round (ninth overall) of the 2003 priority draft. The big defender saw a lot of ice time in the league playing in a total of 227 regular season games over four seasons for the Barrie Colts, Belleville Bulls and St. Michaels Majors and appeared in 21 playoff games.

McGuffin arrives as a member of the Ridgebacks looking to continue the success he found last season with junior hockey’s Sarnia Legionnaires. He was an essential part of the championship winning team in 2008-09, as he recorded 12 points in the team’s playoff run. During the regular season, he was seventh in league scoring and second in team scoring with 26 goals on the year. McGuffin is an effective two-way player who creates scoring opportunities with his physical play.

Rizzi enters his second year as a Ridgeback following a successful rookie campaign that saw him place in the top 10 in OUA freshmen scoring. The Kingston native utilizes his long reach, accurate shot and great play making instincts in making himself a scoring threat every time on the ice. Last season, Rizzi finished second in UOIT assists (15), points (24) and power play goals (5). Drafted third overall in the 2003 OHL Priority draft by Kingston, the right winger played three seasons with the Frontenacs before being sent to Peterborough during his fourth and final year in the league. In total, Rizzi appeared in a total of 229 regular season games and 11 playoff games in the league.

He has gained valuable experience in his two previous years with the Ridgebacks and has played more minutes and more games than any other Ridgeback goalie. Mateja will go down in the books as the goalie in the Ridgebacks first game (10/12/07 vs. Queen’s), first win (11/9/07 vs. Windsor) and first shutout (2/2/08 vs. York). Guy joins the Ridgebacks after an illustrious OHL career including stops in Guelph, Kingston and London. A much sought after goalie by many universities, the Ridgebacks were very pleased when Guy chose to commit to their program. Appearing in 109 regular season games and seven playoff matches in the OHL, the Whitby native has plenty of big game experience between the pipes. He has a career record of 47-48-4-2 during the regular season while recording four shutouts. Playing for the London Knights over the past two years, Guy posted a record of 18-7-1-1 with a goals against average (GAA) of 3.18. Guy’s presence will be counted on to solidify the Ridgebacks goaltending position as they attempt to climb the OUA ladder.

Dawson joined the Ridgebacks after the holiday break last season and played net in every game following, helping the Ridgebacks hit the .500 plateau in their second half of the season. Dawson looked impressive in his first taste of OUA action as he posted a 4-5-3-0 record with a 3.74 goals against average. Dawson joined UOIT after a successful junior career with Huntsville of the OPJHL. In 2007-08, he had a 31-6 record in between the pipes with a 2.11 goals against average. A student of the game, Dawson is very competitive and never gives up on a puck.

After spending the past two seasons helping bolster the Ridgebacks defensive corps, Varty makes a return to his natural position (left wing). As one of the strongest skaters in OUA hockey, the assistant captain will be counted on to provide plenty of offence and leadership to a maturing Ridgebacks team. Last season, Varty won the Dr. Gary Polonsky leadership award. Prior to joining UOIT, he was a member of the Whitby Dunlops, who went on to be Allan Cup Finalists in the Ontario Senior League (2006-07). Varty also has past experience in the CIS playing with St. Thomas University for two seasons.

Making his debut in the new year, Purves quickly became one of the Ridgeback’s best defenders. He is strong on his skates and is extremely physical in the corners and around the net. Count on seeing him on the ice during the most demanding of Ridgeback defensive situations this season. Before joining UOIT, Purves spent time in the OHL with the Windsor Spitfires and Barrie Colts. Most recently, Purves was also a member of the Newmarket Hurricanes of the OPJHL who qualified for the Dudley Hewitt Cup Finals.

CKEYHISTORY OF THE QUEEN’S CUP

2008-09 REGULAR SEASON STANDINGS The history of the Queen’s Cup is rooted in Canada’s rich hockey tradition. McGill University formed the world’s first organized hockey team in 1877. By 1886, Queen’s University had also formed a team and played their cross-town rivals from Royal Military College in exhibition games. In 1891, a challenge from the McGill team to The University of Toronto resulted in the formation of the Varsity Blues hockey team. Repeated attempts to form an intercollegiate league were unsuccessful because of the expense and distance of travel.

It took 10 years of debate and occasional exhibition games, until officials from Queen’s, McGill, Toronto, Osgoode Hall, RMC, Ottawa College and Trinity University met in 1901 and agreed to form a union for the following year. A new era in the hockey world opened with the 1902-03 season, as the world’s first university hockey league was born.

As university hockey teams were still relatively new, the Canadian Intercollegiate Hockey Union (CIHU) officials devised two schedules, one was for more experienced teams and other for intermediate-level teams.

The “Senior Series”, as it was known, consisted of McGill, Queen’s and the University of Toronto. The schedule in that inaugural season consisted of only two contests (i.e. a one-game series versus each team).

The first league game was played in Kingston on Jan. 16, 1903, resulting in a 7-1 victory for Toronto over Queen’s. At that game, the Queen’s hockey club offered a silver trophy, known as the Queen’s Cup, to be presented to the eventual league champion.

McGill opened their season at home on Jan. 23, 1903 with a resounding 7-0 loss to the upstart Golden Gaels. The following week, a wild 9-7 McGill victory over the Varsity Blues, resulted in a first-place finish for McGill. Since there was no playoff format in place (that would come about some six decades later), McGill was declared the inaugural Queen’s Cup champions.

The trophy has been contested since the 1902-03 season, interrupted only by the two World Wars. After World War II the league expanded and the OUA now includes 16 institutions (after reaching a high of 17 teams in the mid-1980’s). Twelve different schools have hoisted the Queen’s Cup. Toronto has claimed ownership 41 times, including 10 straight championships in the 1920’s and 12 of 14 championships from 164-1975. McGill is second with 13 titles, followed by UQTR (eight), Queens (six), Guelph and Montreal (five each) and Waterloo twice. Brock, McMaster, Western and Windsor have each hoisted the Cup once.

EYUOIT TRADITIONS

Hunter the RidgebackHunter the Ridgeback was born in February 2006. Needing an identity for the Ridgebacks varsity teams, the athletic department found this dog and asked the student body to name him. After a variety of names were considered Hunter was chosen. The name Hunter represents the breed’s instincts and reputation as a hunting dog in Africa.Hunter can be found at UOIT varsity hockey games cheering on the teams and dancing up a storm, as well as at events throughout the community. Hunter can also be seen taking part in the UOIT ‘School is Cool’ youth programs at elementary schools across the Durham Region.

Ridgebacks NicknameThe Ridgeback nickname represents both the athletes and the location of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology.A Ridgeback is a large and well muscled hunting dog that is legendary for its ability and use in hunting down lions. Strong and extremely competitive by nature, the Ridgeback is also lightning quick and deftly alert while constantly paying attention to its surroundings. Known as a dominant dog with aggressive instincts, the Ridgeback moves, not only like a hunting dog, but like a dog of prey. It is strong willed and confident that thrives on vigorous exercise and athletic activities. Native to Africa, the Ridgeback is well-known for its ability to hunt large game including lions. In addition to describing the skills and traits of UOIT athletes, the Ridgeback nickname aptly describes the majestic Oak Ridges Moraine just north of campus.Glenn Coady (pictured) submitted the name Ridgebacks, which was selected from over 300 submissions to become the official nickname of UOIT.

The BLUE CREWThe Blue Crew has been a tradition since the first time the UOIT Ridgebacks hockey team set foot on the ice. Some of the loudest and most rowdy fans in the OUA, members of the Blue Crew can be seen on game days sporting their distinctive Blue Crew t-shirts and hard helmets.Anyone one can be a member of the Blue Crew, all that is required is the spirit to support the Ridgebacks and an appetite to enjoy the pre-game burgers and hot dogs available to all Blue Crew members at Shagwell’s on the Ridge.
