The Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament

Presented by the Hawaiian International Billfish Association, Inc. (HIBA), a non-profit corporation and was incorporated in 1974. Its’ major work was to operate a fishing tournament created by six men in 1959, to assume the work and records of the

HIBT from Peter Fithian and direct attention to Kailua-Kona as a year round quality Big Fish (Marlin and Tuna) destination. The six men were Porter Dickenson, Peter S. Fithian, Dudley C. Lewis, Richard F. MacMillan, Desmond Stanley, Edward D. Sultan, Sr. and C.M. Cooke III joined soon after.

It later became evident that there was little or no knowledge about the life cycle of the Marlin. Due to John C. Marr’s urging, the HIBA Board founded a 501C3 Scientific Corporation and called it the Pacific Ocean Research Foundation (PORF). Over a period of 15 years, more than 65 scientific papers were written by scientists with credit to PORF.

Your participation will aid in the continuance of these efforts. The Directors would also like to acknowledge, with thanks, the significant financial assistance received from the County of Hawaii Economic Development funds.

Message from Governor linda lingle and lieutenant Governor Duke aiona

On behalf of the people of Hawai‘i, we send our personal greetings of aloha to everyone gathered for the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament off the Kona coast of the Big Island.

Founded in 1959 by Peter Fithian, this tournament has become one of the most exciting fishing competitions in the world, showcasing big game fishing at its best. Each year, the tournament draws teams from across the Pacific and around the world, including Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Japan, Korea, Tahiti, South Africa, Canada and the rest of the United States to come and compete in our waters.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all of the sponsors and organizers for making this world-class sporting event possible and highlighting Hawai‘i as a premier location for fishing for more than 50 years.

Our best wishes for another successful tournament.

Aloha,

Mayor’s MessageOn behalf of the people of the County of Hawai'i, I wish to congratulate the Hawaiian International

Billfish Tournament on the occasion of your 51st anniversary celebration in Kona on August 2-8, 2010. The important contributions of this tournament to the Kona sports fishing tradition and the overall quality of life on the Big Island over the past half century have made the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament an integral part of our Hawai'i Island community. Having 30 teams participating from around the world is a testament to the lasting quality of the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament.

The County of Hawai'i applauds the organizers of this tournament for your outstanding efforts to perpetuate this highly enjoyable and entertaining sporting event. Best wishes for another successful and enjoyable tournament in 2010 and best of luck to all the competing teams.

Aloha,

founder's Message – aloha & Welcome to KonaOnce again I have the honor and privilege of welcoming you to Kona, Hawaii and the 51st

HIBT, one of the world’s oldest amateur fishing contests. Thank you for being here. Those pictured above have, through their administrations, contributed greatly to our success

and have our sincere thanks. It takes a lot of interested people to make this nearly all volunteer organization able to perform at a world class level. Our sincere thanks to all of you.

Once again our headquarters will be at the newly refurbished King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel close by the King’s Kona Summer Palace. All of the functions shall be in Kailua-Kona where the founding of the HIBT took place.

We hope that you will enjoy the contests and that you will return next year for our fishing days of July 25 -29, 2011.

Kona’s grand claim to be the “Blue Marlin Capital of the Pacific is partly based on the number of

grander blues – 1,000 pounders – caught here over the last half century. But could that title be in jeopardy because, of all things, conservation of the resource?

Back in the first quarter-century of the HIBT, 1959 through 1984, if a sportfisherman caught a grander here, it was sure to be weighed, photographed and counted in the annals of legendary feats.

In 1978, for example, Kona’s big-game fishing fleet recorded five grand-ers. That total was matched in 1985 and again in 1986, making these the three best “grander” years in Kona history.

In recent years, we are more likely to see only one or two at the scales.

Those reduced numbers have hap-pened despite a bigger, better equipped, and better-skilled sportfishing fleet com-pared with the early days. Back in the 1960s, for example, it was rare to see a grander at the scales (only seven recorded from 1960 through 1973). If a big fish hit, the angler was usually outgunned because of his gear. The wooden rod butt might not survive the initial force of the strike and if it did, the straight butt was at a leverage disadvantage.

Those big old Penn Senator 16/0 reels made a great deal of ratchet racket, but their drags burned up from the blistering run of a half-ton fish and their one-speed

gear ratios made the angler sweat for ev-ery inch of line he could get back.

Meanwhile, the typical battle strategy worked against the fisherman. Those pioneers thought the best scheme was to slug it out toe-to-toe until the fish wore itself out from the constant stress.

It wasn’t until the 1970s that anglers got an important lesson from billfish scientists. The longer the fight the more likely the fish would win.

Much of the true physiology of a fish-fight came out through scientific sym-posia sponsored by the HIBT and the Pacific Ocean Research Foundation.

The lesson: It’s best to go after a big fish early when it is still relying on its sprint muscles. When it settles down into marathon mood two things can happen and both are bad.

The grander you think you are fight-ing may resume its normal life while you trail along futilely behind. Big billfish have been known to resume feeding hours into a fight, unhindered by the minor nuisance that is you. (They’ve also resumed mating, too. Anglers often report that their giant female adversaries get swarmed by smaller males during the fight.)

Or the giant fish dives down into the depths where it dies and leaves you with the impossible task of lifting a half-ton of dead weight on a puny fishing line.

Knowing that you have to get to the fish fast, skippers learned how to maneu-

ver their increasingly faster, nimbler and more powerful craft to get close quickly. Anglers took full advantage of their bent-butt rods, two-speed lever-drag reels, and bucket-seat harnesses to keep up.

Once they were close enough, they could take their best shot.

In the old days, that best shot would be with a flurry of flying gaffs.

These days, it is just as likely to be with a tagging stick.

And there, at last, is where we have reached the dilemma.

Without a weight and a photo, who knows how many granders are really caught here each year?

If I counted all of the possible grand-ers reported to me each month as tagged and released, the numbers would be staggering. I’m talking about dozens per year.

And that’s not counting all of the skippers who follow the keep-mum max-im: “If you don’t weigh it, don’t say it.”

While it is true that anglers have estimates bigger than their experiences, very reliable skippers have told me about releases they say have definitely topped the 1,000-pound mark. In many cases, those estimates also involved length measurements taken when the fish was fighting at the stern or boatside.

If we factor in those reliable reports, the actual number of granders “caught” here (the word “caught” including those officially tagged and released) would be

Kona’s Grander

DilemmaBy Jim Rizzuto

at least two or three times the one or two weighed.

The increasing use of light tackle with bonus points for light tackle catches in tournaments has also put the possibility of a big-fish catch in jeopardy.

It is obviously more difficult to catch a giant marlin on, say, 50-pound-class tackle, than on 130. Indeed, when the HIBT gave up the use of 130 a quarter century ago, some predicted that the event’s big-fish days were over.

In a rare twist of fate, two HIBT com-petitors then weighed granders on 50 and set IGFA records for the line class.

Even the catching of a huge fish on any tackle doesn’t guarantee victory in an event like the HIBT. In the 2008 run-ning of the HIBT, Laguna Niguel Team #2 caught a 973-pound blue – one of the biggest fish in the 50-year history of the series. Yet Laguna Niguel couldn’t ride its dorsal fin into first place and had to catch a 695-pound blue and then tag a third fish to win.

(One good snack on a 27-pound bait-fish and the 973-pound Marlin Magic catch would have been the third grander of 2008.)

Despite the emphasis on tag and re-lease and light tackle, the first decade of the 21 first century has actually turned out to be the second best decade in the history of Kona’s grander fishery with 22 granders weighed from 2000 to 2010 compared with 23 from 1980 to 1990.

What’s more, the new emphasis on conservation through tag and release is giving Kona an even better reputation as a place where billfishermen care enough to protect the fishery.

In the final anaylsis, that’s a better rea-son why Kona deserves its title as “Blue Marlin Capital of the Pacific.”

2009 Henry Chee award

The Henry Chee Memorial Award was established in 1965 by the HIBA Board of Governors to be presented annually. To the charter boat captain having the greatest number of Billfish points scored on his boat during the HIBT.

Captain Chee was a pioneer marlin captain. His vessel Malia, was known as the “Grey Ghost of the Kona Coast”. Throughout his lifetime, Captain Chee set an unprecedented number of game fish catch records which helped make his favorite fishing grounds, the Kona Coast, world famous. He continues to live on in the memories and legends of the charter fleet who now compete for this trophy named in his honor.

Richard Boone won fame as an actor in both films and his television series "Have Gun Will Travel". He took up residence in Kailua-Kona in the late 50's and pursued his great interest in big game fishing on his own boat the Goodbye Charlie. As an enthusiastic supporter and Governor of the HIBA, he gave his time, talent, and prestige to the event and promoted Kona's fishing throughout his lifetime. Following his death, the HIBA established an award in his name. The award is to be presented annually to the top scoring skipper based on a rating and ranking formula given by his teams on each of the five days fishing.

I was born and raised in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Currently I am attending college and majoring in graphic design. I’m a licensed hairstylist and makeup artist and have a clothing line called NVuS clothing. While I enjoy shopping, going to the beach, training and competing on the “Average Joe’s” team in mixed martial arts, I love spending time with my 1 1/2yr old son. I would love to build my career as a model and soon get into acting. I’m currently working with a manager Jon Sabati who has taught me a lot in the modeling industry.

My future plans are to live spontaneously and enjoy everything in life that God has to offer. I like to try new things, get a little taste of different opportunities and enjoy meeting new people.
