Banking Association Outreach Event Description: Pennsylvania Citizen Corps, ReadyPA, in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Association of Community Banks (PCAB), the Pennsylvania Credit Union Association (PCUA), and the Pennsylvania Bankers Association (PBA), will be partnering during National Preparedness by providing member banks with a newsletter article explaining National Preparedness Month and ReadyPA. The newsletter goes out to 150 community banks in Pennsylvania, along with vendors in the financial services industry. The PBA agreed to print an article on National Preparedness Month in their July/August magazine for their members. The magazine reaches their 1000 members’ desks around Labor Day. The magazine is also posted online at www.pbasc.com/paBankerMag/paBankerMag.htm. These will join the Spanish translated materials already on our website. This is step one of a major outreach campaign planned for the fall and beyond to reach these growing populations in Pennsylvania. Event Category: Multi-Cultural State: Pennsylvania Event Name: Hispanic Outreach Plan Event Description: ReadyPA and Pennsylvania Citizen Corps worked with a private contractor to develop a Hispanic Outreach Plan. Our goals are to increase the level of emergency preparedness of Pennsylvania’s Latinos; secure partnerships with non-profit community-based organizations to promote preparedness among their Latino constituents; recruit and train Spanish-speaking Latino volunteers and first responders; and maximize and/or supplement current Pennsylvania Citizen Corps and ReadyPA program resources and partnerships. The plan includes creative elements such as tabletop Home Emergency Kit Checklist Pads; Magnetic Home Emergency Kit Checklists; and Emergency Kit Canvas Bags for distribution. The plan also includes Wild Postings of a poster and take 1 Tabletop Home Emergency Kit Checklist in beauty salons and bodegas throughout Hispanic communities. We also intend to work with the Neighborhood Watch groups in communities to develop Emergency Watch Neighborhood Captains and train them in CERT. The intention was to develop this plan in National Preparedness Month and use it beyond that timeframe to include a growing overlooked population in Pennsylvania, as well as reiterate that emergency preparedness is important every month. Event Category: Other: Op-Ed Distribution State: Pennsylvania Event Name: National Preparedness Month Op-Ed Event Description: Director Robert P. French, in coordination with ReadyPA and Pennsylvania Citizen Corps, developed an Op-Ed piece for distribution in state newspapers for National Preparedness Month. The article is entitled “Disaster Preparation: Planning Beats Wishing” and discusses the results of a recent survey conducted by PEMA and Pennsylvania Citizen Corps. The results showed that more than 60% of Pennsylvania residents think it is “not very likely” or “not likely at all” that they will be affected by a disaster within the next three years. The Director also discusses other findings of the survey and explains to state residents what it means to Be Informed, Be Prepared, and Be Involved. The article ran in the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader on September 13; York Dispatch on September 14; Lebanon Daily News on September 15; Centre Daily Times on September 16; and the Erie Times-News on September 25. The activity book features the Super Safety Squad of Frankie, Tyler, Rosa, Alex, and Liv. They all have their own type of super power ranging from knowing what is and isn’t an emergency to knowing what goes into your go kit. They also have a special dog named Penny who knows how to keep all the neighborhood pets safe in an emergency. The book includes puzzles and coloring pages and encourages children in grades K-4 to become a part of the Super Safety Squad themselves. ReadyPA Photo Gallery Event Description: ReadyPA and Pennsylvania Citizen Corps partnered with a contractor to develop a photo gallery for the ReadyPA site. There are so many outstanding outreach and training events celebrating National Preparedness Month, as well as other emergency preparedness times throughout the year that we developed a photo gallery to host pictures from these events. These pictures will give site visitors a taste of what Citizen Corps and its partners are involved in and may encourage volunteerism to grow in Pennsylvania. Event Category: Other - Training State: Pennsylvania Event Name: Franklin County Evacuation Drill Event Description: Real-time training drill in an 18-hour mock evacuation. The scenario: A category 2 hurricane was moving inland with winds up to 150 mph and capable of moving a mobile home and was expected to hit the county in four hours. Residents of a mobile home park were in the direct path of the storm and needed to be evacuated to safety. CERT personnel were given the task of contacting all residents of the mobile home park to inform them of the need to evacuate their homes. They also provided information about where residents should seek shelter. CERT members recorded the names of people living at each residence so their whereabouts could be tracked. At the shelter, CERT personnel served as support to other participating agencies. CART personnel provided care for the residents’ animals while they were at the shelter. The American Red Cross set up the shelter and provided bedding and food to the evacuees until the authorities deemed it safe for them to return to their homes. Event Name: Huntingdon County Ready Reserve Search Meeting Initiative Description: Huntingdon County Emergency Management Agency, in coordination with their Citizen Corps Council, is again kicking off the initial meeting of their new Ready Reserve Search Program. The concept of the program is to help alleviate the resource draw on the professional emergency responders during large scale ground searches. The unit is designed to give an abbreviated training program to the average citizen (consisting of basic ICS/NIMS, light search and rescue, and evidence identification/preservation) and credentialing them to operate in the limited role of ground searcher during field operations. The CERT SAR module will be a foundation block in the training. This group will also be identified as a sub-group of the county citizen corps council.
