Stetson, Orlowski led the Hatters to an impressive 11-7-3 mark in 2003 along with a conference championship appearance for just the third time in the program’s history.

During her fi rst nine years at Stetson, Orlowski has coached 21 all-conference performers including nine fi rst team, six second team, and six all-freshmen team members along with the league’s fi rst-ever Defensive Player of the Year in Emma Astrom and the school’s fi rst Freshman Player of the Year in April Eilering. In 2006, Eilering became Stetson’s second Defensive Player of the Year. In 2010 Astrom was inducted into the Stetson Athletics Hall of Fame. She is the fi rst women’s soccer player to earn that honor.

In 2009 Tessa Gavilsky once again added to the trophy case after being voted the A-Sun’s Offensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. In 2008 she was the fi rst Stetson player ever to earn that honor.

Additionally, Orlowski has coached countless Academic All-Conference performers and routinely places more than 75% of her roster on that prestigious list.

A 1991 graduate of Florida International University (B.A., Mass Communication), Orlowski came to Stetson following one season as an assistant at South Florida. Prior to her stint at USF, Orlowski compiled a 39-54-4 record in six seasons as a collegiate head coach.

Orlowski began Boise State’s program in 1997 and previously started the program at North Florida, beginning a club team in 1995 and turning the Ospreys into a nationally ranked Division II program in their fi rst year at the varsity level. In 1996, North Florida was ranked as high as No. 8 during the season.

Orlowski began her coaching career at Miami’s St. Thomas University in 1992, beginning the NAIA program from scratch just one year after graduating from FIU. She compiled an 18-24-2 record in three seasons at St. Thomas, including winning seasons in 1993 (7-6-0) and 1994 (8-5-1).

As a player at FIU, Orlowski was a four-year starter and team captain for the Golden Panthers. She earned her master ’s in Sports Administration from St. Thomas in 1995.

Orlowski holds a United States Soccer Federation “B” License and also serves as a part-time instructor for the USSF. She is a state coach for the Florida Youth Soccer Association and has served as an Olympic Development Program instructor.

Julie Orlowski enters her 10th season as the Stetson women’s soccer head coach.

Orlowski, who started programs at St. Thomas, North Florida and Boise State, was named the Hatters’ second women’s soccer head coach on July 20, 2001.

Last season she led the Hatters to 11 wins and a #3 seed in the A-Sun tournament. The Hatters fi nished the regular season just one point shy of the #1 spot. It was the third time since Orlowski took over the program, and the fourth time all-time that Stetson fi nished with double-digit victories.

In 2008 Orlowski solidifi ed her status as a top- tier Division I head coach by earning her 100th career victory with a 2-0 win over Lipscomb on October 19.

Well respected among her peers in college soccer, Orlowski was a member of the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee from 2006-2008. In 2009 she was honored further with an appointment to a fi ve-year term on the NCAA National Advisory Committee.

In 2006, Orlowski led Stetson to perhaps the school’s most successful season, earning both A-Sun Coach of the Year and NISOA’s Central Florida Coach of the Year honors. The Hatters matched a school record for wins (12) and posted the best regular season conference record (7-1-1) in the program’s history. The team put together and 8-match unbeaten streak and reached the conference tournament fi nals. Addtionally, four players earned fi rst team all-conference recognition with

April Eilering earning Defensive Player of the Year.

In 2005, the Hatters r e c o r d e d s e v e n shutouts, including five of their last six opponents. Stetson made i t s second semifi nal appearance in three at tempts where it forced the match into penalty

kicks after a double-overtime scoreless tie.

While shutting out six opponents in 2004, Orlowski’s squad set new school records with a 0.97 goals against average and allowing opponents a total of just 17 goals.

After accumulating a 10-24 record during her fi rst two years at

2 0 1 0 S E A S O N O U T L O O K2 0 1 0 S E A S O N O U T L O O KNines are wild in 2010. The roster of 29 Hatters has a deep and talented incoming class of nine freshmen, as well as nine seniors that will graduate in the spring. It will be a season of transition for the Stetson women’s soccer program as the newcomers will be charged with learning the college game from one of the most suc-cessful four-year classes ever to play at Stetson.

The Hatters have at least one key senior to lead the way from each position on the fi eld. An-drea Garavaglia is a three-year starter who has lived up to the outstanding goaltending tradition established by her predecessors. Co-captain and two-year starter Kristen Higel will act as anchor of the back line, and Stetson’s “Dynamic Duo” of Tessa Gavilsky and Katie Bitetto will roam the midfi eld and forward lines. Gavil-sky, a co-captain, is the reigning two-time Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year and scoring champ. Bitetto led the league in 2009 and set a school record in the process with 11 assists.

Last season Stetson reached double digits in victories (11-7-2) for the fourth time in school history, fi nished one point out of fi rst place in the regular season (6-2-2), and reached the semifi nals of the A-Sun tournament. This season it will look to take the next step.

“Anything short of the A-Sun tournament fi nal will be considered a failure. I am very disappointed we did not get to the championship game last year”, said Stetson head coach Julie Orlowski.

“I realize that is a lofty goal and high expectations to place on the team this time of year, but that speaks to the quality of our individu-als and the standard we set going in”, she added.

Forwards

The biggest contributor heading into the season is clearly Tessa Gavilsky (Granite City, Ill.). She is the fi rst Hatter ever to have earned A-Sun Player of the Year honors, and she has done it twice in a row. Gavilsky led the conference in scoring the past two seasons and along the way became Stetson’s all-time leader with 74 career points. She will alternate between the forward and midfi eld positions in 2010 depending on the formation run by Coach Orlowski.

Teaming with Gavilsky to form the most marked pair in the A-Sun will be fellow senior Katie Bitetto (Jacksonville, Fla.). Last sea-son Bitetto used years of solid work ethic and athleticism to her advantage and turned herself into one of the top scoring threats in college soccer. She fi nished the season 12th in the nation in as-sists per game (0.55), and added fi ve goals for 21 total points. She can set ‘em up, and she can put ‘em in the back of the net.

While opponents are busy keeping an eye on Gavilsky

and Bitetto the Hatters will hit them with another talented pair of forwards. Senior Natalie Simon (Lauderhill, Fla.) and junior Court-ney Jenista (Pensacola, Fla.). Simon scored a career-high three goals last season to go along with an assist. Whether it is down the sideline or up the middle, she can run the fi eld with the best. Jenista fi nished last season 4th on the team in scoring with three goals and two assists for eight points. She has a knack for being in the right place at the right time.

Also seeing substantial time up front this season and providing depth will be a trio of talented freshmen. High School All-American Alyssa Welsh (Edison, NJ) is a versatile player who broke the New Jersey state scoring record, Kaitlyn Jones (DeLand, Fla.) is a local product out of DeLand High School who can get herself into goal scoring situations, and Sarah Mathews (Palmetto, Fla.) is a very good, hard working player on either fl ank.

Rounding out the Hatter attack will be junior Sarah Rodriguez (Del-tona, Fla.). She is a talented and versatile player who can and will be used to fi ll every spot on the front line, as well as the midfi eld. She creates a great deal of energy on the fi eld. Rodriguez’ fi rst col-legiate touch was a goal against USF her freshman season.

Midfi elders

Looking at the Stetson midfi eld for 2010 is admittedly another ex-cuse to mention Tessa Gavilsky. Did you hear she is the two-time defending Player of the Year? Some may not know that the A-Sun’s Top-Gun can also get back, control the midfi eld and play some defense.

One of those projected to start alongside Gavilsky is a surprise, and the other is a sophomore who played in 19 games last sea-son. Junior Alexis Hermosa (Or-lando, Fla.) has been a stalwart member of the Hatter back line for two seasons and was named all-freshman at that position in 2008. This season she is likely to make the move to midfi eld so that the team can take advantage of her considerable offensive skills. Kassandra Hartwick (Granite City, Ill.) had a strong freshman season in 2009 scoring two goals and patrolling the midfi eld like a veteran. She has earned a starting role, yet will be challenged.

Also likely to see playing time in the midfi eld will be two juniors who played high school soccer together, a sophomore that returns to the team after a one-year abscence, and a pair of newcomers. Sa-mantha Snyder (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) and Jennifer Rinaberger (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) have taken their games from Nease High School to Stetson and both appear ready to become major contribu-tors. Snyder played in 14 games with seven starts last season. She picked up one assist in 399 minutes on the fi eld. Rinaberger is a hard working player who looked good in the spring and has earned a chance to see more time on the fi eld. She appeared in two games last year. Mary Salfer-Hobbs was a member of the Hatters as a freshman in 2008 and rejoins the team this season. She had a solid spring season and will battle for playing time in the back, as well as at the midfi eld in 2010.

Freshmen Chelsea Cabarcas (College Point, NY) and Shanna Krysalka (Ocala, Fla.) are two young players who can challenge for playing time this season and are sure to become major players

Defenders

The big question on the back line this season is who will replace long-time starter Elise Ketcham who graduated last spring, A-Sun All-Freshman Team member Christina Cromwell was lost to a career-ending injury, and Hermosa who is likely moving forward into the midfi eld?

The 4th spot will continue to be manned by senior Kristen Higel (St. Augustine, Fla.) who started 19 games for the Hatters in 2009 and 11 in 2008. Higel is a smart, experienced player and a strong pres-ence in front of the goal.

The fi rst replacement will come from a switch. While Hermosa moves to the midfi eld, junior Crossley Simmons will make the move to defender. Simmons has been a consistent starter for the Hat-ters since her freshman season when she fi nished second in goals scored with three. Although she can provide offense when needed, her real strength is her power and ability to intimidate on the defen-sive end. She will be an excellent addition to the back row.

There are three freshmen who will be the primary candidates to battle with Jenny Agranoff (Cape Coral, Fla.) for the fi nal two defen-sive positions. Agranoff, a redshirt senior, has four years of experi-ence and has been working hard for her chance to start on the back line. Freshmen Jennifer Raneri (Port St. Lucie, Fla.), Virginia Davis (Deltona, Fla.) and Ciarra Britt (Jacksonville, NC) are all quite tal-ented and will be in the mix all season. The wildcard in this scenario is Britt who is the reigning Volusia County Player of the Year. She can play both the forward and defender positions and will certainly settle in one of those spots as the season progresses.

Local standouts Junior Samantha Jones and sophomore Kristen Mueller out of DeLand will also be in the mix for playing time on the back line. Jones has worked hard to get herself healthy after some issues last season. She could play herself into some substantial minutes as a defender or as a midfi elder. Mueller saw time in two

games last season as a freshman and has the talent to become a regular contributor to the cause.

The fi nal defensive specialist on the roster is senior Lindsay Jow-ers (Port Orange, Fla.). As the season approached it became apparent that Jowers would not be able to play in her fi nal campaign and is now listed as a medical retirement. Speaking to her incredible will and the respect given to her by her teammates she was still voted unanimously as one of the team captains. She will lead and support the squad from the sidelines in 2010.

Goalkeepers

The Hatters have fi ve goalkeepers on the roster this season includ-ing three seniors. One of those seniors has started between the posts for three seasons and is well prepared to lead the team and anchor the defense again in 2010. Andrea Garavaglia (Webster Groves, Mo.) has already established herself as one of the best stoppers all-time for a program rich in keeper tradition. She enters the season 2nd all-time in goals against average (1.41), 2nd in shutouts (14), and 4th in saves with 240. Last season she had a career-best G.A.A. of 1.26 and equaled her career-high of seven shutouts.

Although all four remaining keepers are talented enough to take over the position if necessary, the competition for the #1 backup position is between senior Caitlin Peterson (Ocala, Fla.) and soph-omore Laura Seletos (New Port Richey, Fla.). Peterson has held the support role for three seasons and has performed well when-ever called upon. She played in two games as a freshman and two more as a sophomore. She is an outstanding student who spent this past spring semester studying overseas in Kenya. In Peterson’s absence Seletos seized the opportunity to begin her accent as the heir apparent to Garavaglia. She will look to gain as much experience as she can this season in preparation for a likely starting role beginning in 2011.

Senior Rachel Allen (Lake Worth, Fla.) and freshman Amber James (Umatilla, Fla.) round out the Hatter roster in 2010. Allen is a player who inspires her teammates every day. For three years she has proven herself a leader and provided an example by working hard in practice day in and day out. James is a player that Hatters fans will want to keep an eye on. The Lake County Athlete of the Year is a very talented athlete with tremendous potential. Although she comes from a smaller high school program, she should certainly challenge for playing time after establishing herself at this level.

After a strong season and coming up just shy of the A-Sun cham-pionship game last season, the Hatters are looking to take the next step in 2010.

“We lost some very good players to graduation after last year. Play-ers like Emily Yero, Elise Ketcham, Heather Berg and Emily Ware are hard to replace. We built our program around Yero, Elise was a four-year starter on defense, Bergy was a big time scorer, and Em-ily did some great things for us off the bench”, said Orlowski.

“This new group of seniors represents one of the most successful four-year classes we have ever had here. They have what it takes and they deserve to go out with a ring”, she added.

Once again this season Coach Orlowski has proven that Stetson is not one to shy away from tough opponents. In addition to its al-ways-diffi cult Atlantic Sun schedule Stetson will be taking on a chal-lenging non-conference slate. At home the Hatters will face Florida Atlantic (8/20), Miami (8/22), Embry-Riddle (8/26) and Virginia Commonwealth (9/3). On the road they will challenge Florida State (8/29), USF (9/5), Southeast Missouri State (9/10) and Arkansas-Little Rock (9/12).

• Location - The DeLand campus is 35 miles from Orlando and 25 miles from Daytona Beach.

• Faculty - 195 full-time, 95% with Ph.D. or equivalent.

• Student Population - 59% female/41% male; 78% Florida/25% out-of-state; 3.4% foreign/14% minority.

• Student Organizations - More than 100 organizations; student government, service, special interests, 17 scholastic and honorary societies, including Phi Beta Kappa.

• Greek Life - The presence of eight (7) national fraternities and six (6) national sororities complements campus-wide activities.

• Athletics - Stetson is an NCAA Division I member of the Atlantic Sun Conference. The athletic department sponsors 15 intercollegiate sports, including baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s crew, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and volleyball. The baseball and softball teams won A-Sun championships in 2007.

• Admission: The academic criteria include a challenging high school curriculum. A 3.70 was the average GPA of incoming freshmen in 2007. The SAT range of the middle 50 percent of the 2007 entering fi rst-year class was 1030-1240; the ACT range was 21-27.

• Financial Assistance - Academics merit, scholarships, musical talent, athletic grants, need-based grants, loans and work-study, as well as monthly payment plans.

• Academic Programs - There are over 60 majors and minors offered within Stetson’s three colleges and schools: the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Music, and the School of Business Administration.

The University ... Stetson University maintains a tradition of academic excellence within a friendly and informal atmosphere. Its spacious 170-acre campus, lined with palm and oak trees, is centrally located between two major Florida cities, Daytona Beach and Orlando. Stetson combines the best of two educational worlds: the variety of a university coupled with the concern for individual development found at a small college. Included in the diverse curriculum are 11 degree programs (fi ve bachelors, six masters and post masters) and more than 60 majors. Stetson ranked second on the list of the South’s top regional universities for academic quality and sixth in the best value category, in U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” for 2007. Stetson is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Academic programs are accredited by the American Bar Association, the National Association of Schools of Music, AACSB International, and the American Chemical Society. The College of Arts and Sciences was awarded the fi rst private university Phi Beta Kappa chapter in Florida.

The Faculty ... The Stetson “advantage” is its faculty. They know their fi elds of study: 95% of faculty members hold Ph.D. or equivalent degrees. More important, all of them teach undergraduates. The low student to faculty ratio, 12:1, means that Stetson’s 195 faculty members have more time for teaching and advising students. They are accessible and involved in their students’ personal development.

International Focus ... Through distinctive programs, such as Russian Studies, Latin American Studies, International Relations, the Washington Semester and the International Business Practicum, Stetson prepares students to succeed in the rapidly changing global marketplace. Several times each semester, dignitaries and leading scholars from around the world visit the campus to lecture and meet informally with the students. Former President Jimmy Carter, South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu and holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel have been among the lecturers at Stetson University.

The Students ... Over 2,000 undergraduates from more than 41 states and 40 foreign countries attend Stetson. Most entering students are at the top 25% of their high school class, and were deeply involved in school and community life. All have successfully completed a college preparatory program.

Campus Life ... Campus living is important to Stetson students. Sharing experiences, having fun, learning to live in a community and taking responsibility for shaping residence hall life are all a part of the self-discovery process that makes Stetson exciting. Seventy-eight percent of Stetson students live on campus.

Academic Program ... The university awards the bachelor’s degree in arts, sciences, education, business administration, music, and music education. Master’s degrees are offered in accounting, business administration, couseling, education, and English.

Facilities ... Stetson boasts a charming mix of historical and contemporary buildings. The heart of the campus is included in the Stetson University National Historic District, while the state-of-the-art Lynn Business Center houses the School of Business Administration on the fi ve fl oors of modern classrooms, seminar rooms and faculty offi ces. The duPont-Ball Library houses extensive print collections and access to more than 100 subscription electronic databases and 11,000 full-text journals, as well as many computer workstations for student use. The Gillespie Museum of Minerals boasts the largest private collection of minerals outside the Smithsonian Institution. The Edmunds Center, a 4,000-seat athletic facility, provides two full-sized basketball courts, locker rooms and athletic department offi ces. The Hollis Center and Wilson Athletic Center provide Stetson students and student-athletes alike with excellent health and wellness opportunities.

Jeff Altier, a 26-year veteran of the Stetson University athletic department, is in his 14th year as Stetson’s Director of Athletics. During his tenure, Altier has earned a reputation as an outstanding fundraiser and a leader with an eye on the future, and is noted for his active participation in the NCAA governance structure.

Altier, captain of the nationally-ranked 1982 Hatter baseball team, earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Stetson. Upon wrapping up his Stetson baseball career, he spent two years as a player/coach developing the sport in Perth, Australia. He then returned to Stetson as an assistant coach before being promoted to Ticket Manager, Director of Athletic Promotions, and then Associate Athletic Director. In these rolls, he spearheaded the department’s development efforts as well as oversaw athletic marketing and promotions, concessions and travel coordination. He was named Director of Athletics in 1996.

Altier also served as Tournament Manager for the NCAA Division I Southeast First and Second Round Men’s basketball tournament hosted by Stetson in 1993 and 1996 at the Orlando Arena, and as Tournament Director for the 1999 and 2004 tournament.

Stetson has taken great strides in the area of gender equity under Altier, increasing scholarships, participation opportunities and staffi ng for women’s athletics. The unprecedented success of the women’s tennis, golf, soccer, basketball and softball teams in conference competition during Altier’s tenure are evidence of his commitment to women’s athletics. In fact, under his direction Stetson’s women’s and men’s teams have won an impressive 15 conference championships.

A hallmark of Altier’s professional career was the building of Stetson’s $4.5 million baseball facility, Melching Field at Conrad Park. Built in conjunction with the City of DeLand, Melching Field is regarded as one of the nation’s premiere college baseball facilities. Altier then turned his attention to construction of an on-campus softball facility, which broke ground in 2002 and was ready for competition in February of 2003. The Patricia Wilson Field has been named Collegiate Softball Field of the Year four times. He was also instrumental in securing new state-of-the-art fi eld lighting for both the softball and soccer fi elds in 2005. Under his guidance, the Athletic Department has seen the addition of the new Wilson Athletic Center, a $ 1.5 million health and wellness facility for the use of Stetson student-athletes. Altier’s leadership has extended beyond campus, as he has taken on Atlantic Sun Conference leadership roles, chairing many committees and serving as conference vice-president. Additionally, he has served on the National Association of College Directors of Athletics Division IAAA board of directors, the NCAA A.E.C. Cabinet and is currently a member of the prestigious NCAA Leadership Council. Locally he has served as president of the DeLand Rotary Club, vice-president of the DeLand Sports Redevelopment Association, and is a graduate of Leadership DeLand and Leadership Orlando. He is currently a member of the board of directors of the Central Florida Sports Commission. Altier was honored as the West Volusia Sportsperson of the Year for 2004.

Altier’s family includes wife, Sarah (Booker) (Stetson B.A. ’82, M.Ed. ’96), and children Heath (Stetson M.B.A. ’09), Brianne, and Garrett.

For more than 30 years the Atlantic Sun Conference has stood for achievement with integrity in both the academic and athletic arenas with a focus on the balance between the two for its student-athletes. The A-Sun boasts a blend of the most dynamic and prestigious private and public institutions in the region, with all committed to the conference goal of Building Winners for Life.

BUILDINGContinuing a tradition of academic achievement, a record 60 percent of all student-athletes earned All-Academic status during the 2009-10 academic year. Lipscomb edged out Belmont, the seven-time winner of the All-Academic Trophy, to win its fi rst such trophy with close to 72 percent of its the student-athletes achieving All-Academic status with grade point averages of a 3.00, or better.

Several Bisons teams received national recognition for their suc-cess in the classroom. Both the men’s and women’s track & fi eld teams posted team GPAs among the top fi ve in the nation - the only school in the country to boast that distinction. Jacksonville’s women’s track team received their ninth straight USTFCCCA All-Academic honor. Lipscomb’s women’s basketball team posted the ninth best GPA in the country and the conference champion volleyball team led fi ve A-Sun schools in receiving an AVCA Team Academic Award. The Stetson men’s tennis team led the nation with nine student-ath-letes earning the honor of Scholar Athlete from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. A total of fi ve A-Sun schools and 24 student-ath-letes received recogntion from the ITA. Stetson and Belmont joined only 16 other Division I schools considered an All-Academic squad in both men’s and women’s tennis.

For the fi rst time the NCAA released single-year APR for Division I head coaches in six sports dating back to 2003-04, the beginning of the program. All 11 A-Sun schools produced a coach who had a year of a perfect score of 1000 and the league produced a total of 25 seasons with scores of 1000. Seven of the conference’s men’s and women’s basketball recorded at least one score of 1000 and fi ve teams had a score of 1000 in 2008-09, the most recent year recorded by the NCAA.

WINNERSFour A-Sun teams received Division I-AAA Athletics Directors As-sociation All-Sports Trophies in recognition of their performances in NCAA postseason play. Lipscomb’s softball team, ETSU’s men’s tennis squad plus UNF’s men’s golf team and women’s tennis car-ried the conference to the third-highest total by any one conference.

Golf continued to boom in the conference as three league members on the women’s side advanced to NCAA play for the fi rst time in conference play. Women’s golf became the fi rst sport in the confer-ence to produce three NCAA participants since baseball in 2003. At the NCAA Regionals, ETSU’s Nina Muehl opened with an 8-un-der 64, the single lowest round carded in all of Division I golf and became just the second golfer from the A-Sun to earn a spot in the NCAA Championships

The Ospreys’ men’s golf team spent the year ranked among the top programs in the country alongside ETSU. Both advanced to NCAA postseason play and the Ospreys made the nationals for the fi rst time as a conference member. Sophomore Sean Dale earned All-America honors and qualifi ed for the US Amateur, as did his team-mates Kevin Alywin and Kevin Phelan. Phelan opened his summer by qualifying for the US Open at Pebble Beach. ETSU’s Rhys Enoch tied for the individual title at the NCAA East Regional and his play carried into summer as he made his second Palmer Cup team and advanced all the way to the quarterfi nals of the British Amateur.

Individual performances stood out on the diamond as FGCU’s Chris Sale became a consensus All-America en route to becoming the

conference’s fourth fi rst-round pick in the last two years. ETSU’s Paul Hoilman contended for the national triple crown and burst onto the national scene by winning the fi rst-ever home run derby competition - contested at historic Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb. Mercer’s Jacob Tanis fi nished one RBI shy of the national lead in pacing the Bears back to the top of the A-Sun for the fi rst time in more than 25 years.

In softball, two hurlers established themselves among the best in the nation. Lipscomb’s Whitney Kiihnl and USC Upstate’s Morgan Childers each topped the 30-win mark - a fi rst for the conference. The two traded the national lead in ERA throughout the season and when the year came to a close, Kiihnl fi nished with the best mark in the nation with Childers taking a close second. Kiihnl and Childers ranked second and third in the country in fewest hits allowed per seven innings.

For the fi rst time in league history, the conference’s last remaining charter member, Mercer, hosted the General Shale Brick Basketball Championships. The hosts advanced to the fi nal of the men’s event setting up a standing-room-only event at the University Center against ETSU. In the end the Buccaneers won back-to-back titles. Jacksonville advanced to the NIT for the straight second year and provided the league’s fi rst win in the event since 1996 when Ben Smith connected on a game-winning 3-pointer in the fi nal seconds to stun top-seeded Arizona State.

On the women’s side ETSU became the third A-Sun school to win three straight titles, FGCU advanced to the WNIT for a third con-secutive year and USC Upstate registered its fi rst 20-win season as a Divisioon I program.

FOR LIFEAlums from the Atlantic Sun, both recent and historic continued to excel at the highest levels. Within the span of three days, FGCU produced its fi rst two major league baseball players. Two pitchers of the Eagles’ 2008 A-Sun Championship squad, Casey Coleman and Sale, took their talents to Chicago as Coleman broke in with the Cubs and Sale soared through the White Sox system after spend-ing less than two months in the minors. In late June, former Stetson All-American Chris Johnson returned to the Astros lineup and hit over .380 his fi rst two months as a regular.

On the links, former ETSU star Rhys Davies has posted a solid rookie season on the European Tour. In the spring he picked up his fi rst win and added back-to-back runner-up fi nishes to move into the top 50 in the world for the fi rst time as a professional. One of his second-place showings occurred at the Wales Open where he closed with a record nine-under-par round 62 on the Ryder Cup course at the Celtic Manor. His stellar play placed Davies eighth on ESPN’s “Top 25 Golfers Under 25” list. The conference will have representation at the Ryder Cup as former league individual champion Colin Montgomerie (1985 with former member Houston Baptist) will captain the European team. Montgomerie will be the second conference alum to lead a Ryder Cup squad. Hal Sutton (Centenary) served as captain for the United States in 2004.
