INTRODUCTION

2010 has been a big year for Alpine in Australia, with the realisation of an “Alpine Director” role finally being unveiled. Initially as a part

time position which we hope to expand as soon as possible, the role is leading to a uniformed approach to programming, athletic

development, strategy, coach and official education, adjudication, planning and very importantly, program development & management.

From November 2010, SSA Alpine (NAC) will further develop the structure and pathway of our sport, by providing National Northern

Winter Programs designed with optimal infrastructure, for athletes at the following three distinct levels.

WHAT? The programs are focused on the development of the whole athlete, we will leave

WHEN? Open Squad (NAST/ FIS Open); annually from mid November - Inaugural year 2010/11... with the

aim for this to be an ongoing process. WHERE?

We have settled on an Austrian location approximately 1 hour west of the famous Tyrolean capital city Innsbruck, in a small village

named Ladis. Ladis is part of the area known as "Tirol's Skidimension". A massive area that encompasses two very large resorts (FISS

& Serfaus) with the added bonus of quiet Ladis all making up an area known as the "sun plateau"

NATIONAL APPROACH & COORDINATION

Northern Program & Base Formation

The formation of northern based national programs will bring together the best Australian skiers in an environment of excellence and

coordination. We have focused on creating one central European base, which may from time to time also work in with additional

locations. This base will provide SSA Alpine a European identity and a sense of hearth for our athletes and coaches while in Europe.

Advantages of a centralised European base; Resource sharing (coaching staff, support staff and

infrastructure) More purchasing power for better pricing and bargaining power /

flexibility (accommodation, vehicles, travel etc.) Athlete coordination and athlete team building

Enhanced integration and coordination amongst athletes at all levels with a big portion of the „pathway‟ in one central location

Coach coordination and coach team building Hill Space sharing (more coaches on the hill, greater resources

for the athletes) More coaches in one spot, resulting in superior athlete

management and enhanced opportunities Potential of a year round base for equipment storage,

Northern Base Requirements

We needed to select a Northern Hemisphere base location that met a number of important criteria. This base is intended to form a hub for our athletes over the coming years, with the potential to expand its use beyond our Alpine athletes, and potentially even beyond Winter Sport.

The chosen location needed to; Be supportive of our intent to run high performance ski racing programs Have on the ground local knowledge and support Boast a ski resort large enough to support vast technical and free-skiing

opportunities across all levels Boast a high percentage of “good weather” and reliable snow conditions Boast an accommodation option that is able to be tailored and become a home

away from home for our athletes and coaches (preferably within walking distance from resort lift infrastructure),

Be located in an area with a variety of training options and hill space Be located in an area that provides good access to up and coming large

international events (FIS World Championships, FIS Junior World Ski Championships, Youth Olympics etc...)

Be centrally located to a sufficient variation and number of races across the three main focus areas

Be cost efficient to enable us the best possible resource infrastructure and give our athletes a real opportunity of world class support

Offer Ski-X training opportunities for both cross training and ski cross squad operation options if possible.
