O Focus: Chris X. PairI was raised in Norwalk, Connecticut,

which is a suburb o New York City. I spentmost my youth dreaming o escaping thatplace, but aer our years o college I movedback. Once back, I took a corporate job andworked in Norwalk or two years. I haveown recreationally since I was 18, and Iused it as a coping method to get me throughie in the corporate world. One day, at theirport in Martinsburg, West Virginia, I sawC-5 take o. Te next business day I called

he Connecticut Air National Guard. I waso enthused by the Air Force that I switchedrom Guard to the Active Duty. Aer

ubmitting my package, I quit my job andtarted an around-the-world trip. Duringhis trip I drove cross-country, rode the Great

Alaska Beer rain, ew a seaplane aroundhe Alaskan interior or a ew weeks, set oot

north o the Arctic Circle, trekked or twoweeks in the Himalayas (turned around at Mt.Everest Base Camp--17,600 .), and hiked, biked, and kayaked all over the South Islando New Zealand. During my year long DEPprocess, I took a creative writing class at theocal community college, read 50 plus books,

volunteered with the U.S. Forest Servicein Wyoming (cleaning toilets or ood andshelter) in a place that was 50 miles romthe nearest town (30 miles were paved), and

volunteered with the National Park Service asa historical interpreter at Cowpens NationalBattleeld or three months. I love campingand hope to be stationed in a place with greatscenery and ew signs o urban development.I realize that I am still young and am trying tond a place in the world to call home... I hopethe Air Force will be it.
