Message from our President Kristin Ballard

Last week we had Rachel from the Special Olympics speak to us about her work here in the ACTand surrounds and her previous role in Queensland with the Special Olympics there. We

appreciated her enthusiasm and her commitment to sport for this group of people who often get somuch more from their involvement in sport whether they compete or not.

This week we are visiting our shed at Queanbeyan Councils Nursery depot Map 71 MountainRoad. The gate will be locked and we have keys so please meet at the gate. Let me know if youare coming and bring something for a picnic tea (old clothes are a good idea).

A visitor to a certain college paused to admire the new Hemingway Hall that had been built on campus.

"It's a pleasure to see a building named for Ernest Hemingway," he said.

"Actually," said his guide, "it's named for Joshua Hemingway. No relation."

The visitor was astonished. "Was Joshua Hemingway a writer, also?"

"Yes, indeed," said his guide. "He wrote a cheque."

Rotary Club of Hall

Hugh Riminton will be attending the Rotary Club of Hall to speak on the 8 November at Functions

at Federation, Gold Creek Barton Hwy - 6.30 for 7.00 pm. His topic will be Surfing chaos.

Hugh Riminton is an award-winning journalist who has reported from dozens of countries over the

last 20 years. Before joining the 10 network in 2009, he spent five years with CNN, reporting from

conflict zones as diverse as Iraq, Sri Lanka, Paristan, and the Korean Peninsula. He has alsoreported extensively on the rise of China, East Asian economic issues, and from Indonesia and

the Philippines. Previuosly he was a news presenter and reporter with the Nine Network, hostingNightline and leading the networks converage of the Port Arthur massacre, the Thredbo disaster

and the Tampa affair among others. He has interviewed every Prime Minsiter since Gough

Whitlam. He was a London- based correspondent in the 1990s, reporting on the end of apartheidin South Africa, the collapse of Somalia, the Rwandan genocide and conflict in the Middle East,

the Balkans, Northern Ireland and Russia. Hugh has won Austalias top journalism awards, the

Walkley and the Logie as well as many internatioonal adwards and honours. He holds a Mastersdegree form Macquarie Univeristy.
