    Presidents Report from Natalie Jupe

    Happy New Year everyone,

I hope you all enjoyed the festive season, and have your batteries recharged for 2013.

We have a big year ahead, starting off with Relay for Life in February. It is only 38 days away solots to do between now and then!!! The good news is that so far over $8000 has already beenraised.

This weeks meeting is not at the pub, instead an informal BBQ at my place. Call or SMS me if youdont already have my address.

I have included the article that was published in the Canberra Times just before Christmas. Wewere very lucky to have Queanbeyan High participate in the Letters of Love project right before theschool term ended. The letters have now been sent off and should be on their way to the residentsof Newtown, Connecticut.

Unfortunately due to other commitments I wont be seeing the NYSF kids this year, but I hope thatthose of you who do go to the dinner or home host enjoy the company of these wonderful youngpeople.

If anyone wants to donate and help the Bushfire victims of Tasmania, Rotary District 9830 hasestablished an appeal. Visithttp://www.rotary9830.org.au/bushfireAppeal.htmfor full details.

Also to kick off the year in a social way, a reminder to everyone that we are going to the moviesnext Tueday night at Manuka for a Friendship Beyond Club Functions event. Hope to see youthere

Students reach out to shattered town by Megan DohertyDate December 21, 2012 http://www.canberratimes.com.au

Rotary Club of Queanbeyan president Natalie Jupe with letters destined for the children of Newtown,

    Connecticut.Photo: Graham Tidy

Their words are simple and heartfelt.'I cannot imagine the pain and sorry which you must feel.'' ''No familyor person deserves to feel the pain you feel and no child deserves this fate. I wish I could change whathappened.'' ''When I heard about this I felt a feeling that I have never felt before and it was deep sorrow.''

These are the words of students from Queanbeyan High School who have reached out to the community ofthe Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, by writing them letters of support in a projectwhich started in South Australia on Monday night and has already spread to Queanbeyan thanks to the reachof Rotary.

Damian Leach, the community services director for the Rotary Club of Campbelltown in Adelaide, is co-ordinating the Letters of Love project, which was sparked by his 11-year-old daughter Ashlee asking himabout the Newtown massacre in which 28 people were shot dead last week, including 20 children and sixstaff members of the local school.

''I told her when something like this happens, the first thing you should ask is 'What can I do to help?','' MrLeach said.

Ashlee's response was to reach out to the surviving children. ''I feel a bit helpless being here in Adelaide,Australia, but I thought about it, and decided I wanted to write a letter to a girl my age that survived thishorrific experience,'' she said, on the Letters of Love Facebook page.

The letters will generally be sent between children the same age. Letters from older children will be directedto other children in the community via the local Rotary club. Mr Leach hopes each child at Sandy HookElementary will receive at least two letters and that some pen pal relationships may develop.

Queanbeyan is the first NSW community to join the project, with Rotary Club of Queanbeyan presidentNatalie Jupe being approached by Mr Leach to help. Miss Jupe said she was willing to collect letters to sendto Newtown from any school in the region.

''We wanted to send our sympathy in a bit of a different way by reaching out to the community, especiallythe children,'' she said.

The letters from Queanbeyan High are beautifully written in their simplicity.

One year 9 girl wrote: ''You may never meet me but I believe that you and your families are strong enoughto get through this and live a happy life. You are surrounded by angels for the rest of your lives.''

A year 8 student wrote: ''When I heard about it on the news my mind immediately went to the families of thepeople who are busy preparing for Christmas that are now preparing funerals. You don't deserve to gothrough this. No one does. You are in our prayers.''

Ashlee raised more than $2000 for the victims of the Pakistan floods in 2010 and helped her father in theShoeboxes of Love project which sent shoeboxes of personal items to the victims of the Brisbane floods inJanuary last year.

''I think as parents the best thing we can do is foster a thought process where if children see a need, theythink 'What can I do to help?','' Mr Leach, 31, said.

''If we foster a generation of children who do that, we're going to have adults who are more empathetic andcompassionate.''

    Joke of the week

Once upon a time, there were four people; Their names were Everybody, Somebody, Nobody and Anybody.

Whenever there was an important job to be done, Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could

have done it, but Nobody did it.

When Nobody did it, Everybody got angry because it was Everybody's job.

Everybody thought that Somebody would do it, but Nobody realized that Nobody would do it.

So consequently Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done in the first place.

Cyclone Evan has struck Samoa causing havoc and destruction.

Emergency Response Kits prepositioned in Apia are being distributed to those most affected and back up

supplies are being shipped from Fiji.

Cyclone Evan will hit Tonga and Fiji in the coming days and reportedly is intensyfying.

We have prepositioned ERKs in Fiji and Rotarians and their supporters are on standby.

Rotary is working with Disaster Management Agencies in all three countries and we anticipate that as well

as ERKs, food, water and clothing will be needed.

RNZWCS will advance funds to enable these supplies to be purchased and distributed immediately.

We are therefore asking clubs to support us and have launched an immediate appeal. We are also working

with the New Zealand Government through MFAT and the NGO Disaster Relief Forum NDRF.

    NYSF Rotary Dinners

The Dinners will be at the Ainslie Football Club in Wakefield Street, Ainslie. Rotarians will meet thestudents attending the NYSF - from all parts of Australia - and hear a prominent scientist who is invited toaddress the students. In past years speakers have included Australians of the Year. Arrive early to chat withthe students, including those from District 9710. Then well sit down with the students to eat. Clubs are

asked to substitute one of their regular weekly meetings in January 2013 and to encourage as many membersas possible to attend. Please advise me, as soon as possible, if your Club members are supporting one of theNYSF Rotary Dinners and approximately how many may attend. A list of names of those attending will berequired by 14 December and any cancellations or additions no later than one week before each Dinner (ie 3

    January and 17 January respectively).

Please note that the number of Rotarians / partners will be limited to 110 at each Dinner, to avoid overcrowding. AnyRotarians who are listed at the RSVP cut-off dates will be required to pay. Please reply by email or phone - detailsbelowwith names of attendees as early as possible. Payment is required on the night and all Clubs will be provideda make-up list of attendees.

    NYSF Home Hosting

A key function of each NYSF Rotary Dinner is to organise Rotarians to host two or more students at theirhome during the Sunday following the receptionbetween 9:00 am and 8:00 pm. This provides studentswith a relaxing day in a local home and enables them to unwind, and catch up on some sleep and somewashing. (Students do not need tours of the area, as this is done elsewhere in the NYSF program). Homehosting has provided many happy experiences for students and Rotarians alike. Members who come to aDinner do not have to hostbut all are invited to do so. It would be a big help if Rotarians who wish tohome host could indicate this (together with preferred numbers) when registering for the Receptions. Hostswill receive stickers for their badge at registration and students will approach those with stickers to arrangeHome Hosting during the reception. Even if you cant come to a Dinner, offer to home host - the studentswill benefit.

RSVPsPlease email your members intended attendance and home hosting plans to me [email protected]. For phone enquiries please call on 6288 1441 or 0402 464 327.
