The Adrian College men’s basketball team, under the guidance of third-year head coach Mark White, looks to make a splash in the MIAA in the 2011-12 season. A season ago, the Bulldogs finished 13-13 overall and 7-7 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. It would be an understatement to say that the core of Coach White’s coaching philosophy is defense and rebounding. Adrian was known to make its opponents work for their points last year as the ‘Dogs led the conference in scoring defense, allowing a school-record 56.9 points per game. The Bulldogs also made a presence on the boards topping the MIAA with 31.6 rebounds a contest, while standing fourth in rebound margin (+1.9). The Bulldogs were also fourth in blocked shots (3.58 b/g.).

The MIAA is a conference where a young team can flourish with experience against quality opponents. The MIAA Preseason Coaches’ Poll picked the Bulldogs to finish third with a total of 24 points. Hope received seven first-place votes and seven poll points. Calvin received one first-place votes and 13 poll points. Following Adrian was Albion (30), Trine (31), Olivet (34), Kalamazoo (38) and Alma (49).

“With great coaches and great teams in our conference, it allows us to learn and grow as a team,” said White. “The key word of this season is experience.”

The Bulldogs have five of its top six scorers returning, all part of the junior class.

Leading the way is guard Wesley Reed who topped the team with 9.9 points a game last season which stood 19th in the MIAA. Reed also provides a deep threat as he led Adrian with 43 three-point shots made, averaging 1.7 a contest which was eighth-best in the league. Reed also made the most of the opportunity on the line and led the team and conference in free throw percentage, shooting 88.9 percent (56-of-63) which is a school and conference record. Following is forward Sean Gallant. Gallant provides an inside

presence with his 6’7” frame and was second on the team in scoring (9.2 ppg) and led on the glass with 6.4 boards a game which was fifth-best in the MIAA. Setting up the offense for the second straight year is point guard Delano Collins. A year ago, Collins dished out a team-high and conference-best 5.4 apg with a total of 140 assists, six away from tying the school record. Collins also registered 6.3 points a game. He took care of the basketball and stood third in the conference with a 2.06 assist/turnover ratio. Collins was just as effective on the defensive side leading the team with 42 steals (1.6 spg), ranking fourth in the

league. Collins (33.27), Gallant (30.58), and Reed (28.35) stood second, 11th, and 15th in the MIAA in minutes played.

Not to be outdone, forward Dennis Mason led the team in rejections with 28 and stood seventh in the MIAA with 1.17 blocks a contest. Mason was second on the team and eighth in the conference with 5.7 rebounds a game. Rounding out the top-scoring returners is Cody Barnes. Barnes provides another deep threat for Adrian. He was ninth in the league and second on the team with a .372 (29-for-77) three-point percentage. Barnes stood second on the team with 29 three-pointers made (1.2 per game). He was also sixth on the team with 5.4 points a contest.

The sophomore class that includes point guard Drew

Torey and guards Curtis Gordon and Mitchell Small looks to get a considerable amount of playing time. Freshman guard Eric Lewis and freshmen forwards Adam Meier and Brad Hohman are set to make an immediate impact. Junior transfer Brad Whitby plans to settle in and contribute right away.

Adrian’s season opens up play at Northwestern (Ohio) on Tuesday, November 15 at 7:00 p.m. Its first home contest is set for Tuesday, Nov. 22 against Siena Heights at 8:00 p.m. which will be played for the Battle of the Milk Jug.

Mark White enters his third season as head coach of the Adrian College men’s basketball team in 2011-12.

In his past two seasons, White has guided the Bulldogs to a .500 or better record every year. Last

season, Adrian was 13-13 overall and 7-7 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The Bulldogs led the league in scoring defense allowing 56.9 points per game (a school record) and in rebounds with 31.6 a contest.

In White’s first season in 2009-10, Adrian had a seven-win improvement and placed third in the MIAA standings. The third-place showing was the best finish in conference play for the Bulldogs since the 1987-88 season.

That success led to White receiving a two-year contract extension through the 2011-12 season.

“I’m really happy with the opportunity to first of all coach here and very happy that the administration acknowledges our effort to lay the foundation of what we think will become a special program,” said White, who is a 1988 graduate of Adrian. “Our staff and team worked really hard to change the culture of the basketball program and to bring in talented student-athletes to regenerate enthusiasm for basketball at Adrian College.”

Adrian College Athletic Director Mike Duffy has been impressed with the job White has done with the basketball program and felt an extension was necessary.

“We’re not naive, this guy is good,” Duffy said. “He’s a type of coach that could move on and be a coach at a Division II school or a lead assistant or even a coach at a Division I school. We want to hold on to someone like that. He’s an alum and has got Adrian Bulldog blood. He’s done a great job molding the team. I understand they were young, but he did a lot in one year and those kids really improved and are only going to get better. I only see the program getting stronger. He sets his goals high and wants to win a championship.”

“He’s very deserving, especially for him coming in his first year and bringing in all new players and doing what he did,” said current student assistant and former player Jovon Mosley, who was one of the 11 newcomers and led the team in scoring in 2009-10 en route to earning Second Team All-MIAA honors. “He was very successful. A lot of coaches aren’t very successful in their first year, especially with a whole new team.”

Adrian finished 15-12 overall (9-5 MIAA) in 2009-10 with one of its biggest wins coming when it knocked off NCAA tournament participant Hope at the Merillat Center in late February. The nine wins in league play were the most since the 1978-79 season.

The Bulldogs finished the season by winning seven of their final 10 games. White was hired in May 2009 as Adrian’s coach and replaced longtime coach Buck Riley. He meshed a group of 11 newcomers to help the Bulldogs put together a strong season. Adrian was the youngest team in the MIAA and exceeded preseason expectations.

White is a 1988 graduate of Adrian College and was inducted into the College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002. He currently ranks fifth on the career charts in scoring with 1,454 points and is also the current holder of the all-time assists record.

White comes back to Adrian College after a very successful career as a prep coach in his hometown of Detroit, Mich. He compiled a record of 201-42 during his time as head coach at Renaissance High School and Southeastern High School. He coached two Michigan Class B High School State Championship teams at Renaissance in 2004 and 2006 and advanced to the state semifinals four out of five seasons from 2002 to 2006.

“Mark White is a well organized coach,” says University of Michigan men’s basketball coach John Beilein. “He is a great teacher of the fundamentals of the game. His energy and enthusiasm is contagious. I sense he has been a driving force in many players’ lives on and off the court. His accomplishments at Renaissance and Southeastern are a testament of his ability to produce championship contenders each year. He will be a great fit at his alma mater.”

“Mark White is a great hire for Adrian College,” said Michigan State University men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo. “He’s won numerous championships in his career, but even more importantly, he wins the right way. He’s not going to be outworked and he spends time with his players, establishing very important relationships. I’ve recruited his players for several years, and academically and socially, they are always prepared for the next step in life. I have no doubt that he’ll be successful at Adrian.”

ADRIAN COLLEGEAdrian College evolved from a theological institute founded by the Wesleyan Methodist denomination at Leoni, Michigan, a small town east of Jackson, in 1845. In 1855 this institute united with the Leoni Seminary, a Methodist Protestant institution, to establish Michigan Union College.

Legend states that members of the College became concerned about the environment at Leoni, which was nicknamed “Whiskey Town.” In 1859, this concern and other circumstances made it advisable to relocate or close. In the same year, Dr. Asa Mahan, pastor of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Adrian and a well-known educator, was encouraged by citizens of the community to establish a college. Mahan had served as the first president of Oberlin College and, before that, as an officer of Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Dr. Mahan and his colleagues invited the officials and supporters of the closing Michigan Union College to join in establishing the new college at Adrian. After the invitation was accepted, the story says, the library holdings were loaded on an ox-cart in March 1859, and transported 60 miles to the new campus site on the west side of Adrian.

On March 28, 1859, Adrian College was chartered by the Michigan legislature as a degree-granting institution with Dr. Mahan as its first president. Through a series of consolidations and denomination unifications, the College has maintained its relationship with The United Methodist Church.

For almost 100 years, the campus consisted of several brick buildings stretching along Madison Street. Most of today’s campus was woods and fields. In the mid-1950s, the College, encouraged by the generosity of Ray W. Herrick, embarked in a building program that established the basis for the current campus.

Today, when students walk in the area bounded on the east by Madison Street and edged by Downs Hall, Valade Hall, Cornelius House and Herrick Tower, they tread on the same ground that students hurried across in 1859 as they rushed to classes, meals and social events. Now, however, the campus consists of 100 acres, over 20 academic and service buildings and 10 residence halls, plus apartments and themed housing.

In its 2011 edition of America’s “Best Colleges,” U.S. News & World Report ranks Adrian College as one of the top five schools in the Midwest of Regional Colleges to have the least student debt load upon graduation.

This is the third consecutive year that Adrian College has been featured and singled out by U.S. News and World Report. In its 2009 edition of America’s “Best Colleges” and again in 2010, Adrian College received top billing as a school to watch and as the #1 Up-and-Coming School in the Midwest.

“Affordability is the top parental concern that parents express with respect to their child’s education,” said Adrian College President Jeffrey R. Docking. “We’re extremely pleased that U.S. News and World Report ranked us in the top five Midwest colleges that have students graduating with a lower debt.”
