Formorethanadecade,theLsUmen’sandwomen’sgolfteamshavecalledUniversityClubhome.thecoursereceivedthehonorofbeingrankedthe13th-besthomeforcollegegolfinthecountry,accordingtoasurveypublishedintheseptember2005issueofGolfDigest.theevaluationbyGolfDigestrankedthetop15homecoursesincollegegolf,andincludedsuchcriteriaasshotvalues,resistancetoscoring,courselayoutanddesign,memorabilityandconditioning. Afterundergoingextensiverenovationsin2010,thehomeofLsU’snationally-rankedmen’sandwomen’sprogramsfeaturesanewly-designedpar-72layoutthatwillserveasanimpressiveshowpieceforgenerationstocome.

ItcomesasnosurprisethattheUniversityClubhasalreadybeenselectedasannCAAMen’sGolfRegionalhostsiteforthe2013season,markingthefirsttimeintheillustrioushistoryoftheLsUmen’sgolfprogramthatthetigerswillserveashoststoannCAApostseasontournamentonitshomecourse. thechallenging18-hole,par-72courseatUniversityClubwillplayto7,700yardsfromitschampionshipteesandfeaturewidefairwaysborderedbypinehammocksandnativegrasses,inadditionto2,000feetofbeautifulbulkhead.Fouradditionalsetsofteesarealsoavailableforplayersofallagesandskilllevels. onApril15,2011,theformerLsUGolfHousewasrenamedtheBilyeuGolfPracticeFacilityinhonorofMaryandWoodyBilyeufollowingtheirgenerousdonationtowardtheredesignofthenewUniversityClubandpracticefacility. DonationsraisedbythetigerAthleticFoundationallowedforextensiverenovationstotheUniversityClubandpracticefacilityin2010,creatingamorechallengingvenueforcollegiategolferswhileattractingchampionshipleveleventstotheUniversityClub.thenCAAsubsequentlyawardedtheUniversityClubthehonorofservingasoneofsixhostsitesforthe2013nCAADivisionIMen’sGolfRegionals. theBilyeuGolfPracticeFacilityfirstopenedinthefallof2002toravereviewsfromplayers,coachesandmembersoftheathleticadministrationalike.this$850,000facilityfundedbytAFfunctionsprimarilyasagolf-learningcenter

fortheLsUmen’sandwomen’steamswherestudent-athletesareabletoimprovetheirskillsatoneofthepremierpracticefacilitiesinthenation. theBilyeuPracticeFacilityfeaturesalavishmeetingroom,officespaceforboththemen’sandwomen’scoachingstaffsandanareadevotedtoequipmentrepairandstorage.Italsoincludeslockerrooms,anindoordrivingrangewithtwohittingbaysandastate-of-the-artlearningcenterwhichcanutilizevideoanalysistobenefiteachplayer’sdevelopmentinaclassroomsetting. outsidethefacilityisapracticeteeboxthatmeasures100yardsinlength,abrandnewwedgegameareabuiltin2007anda10,000square-footputtingandpitchinggreensurroundedbypracticebunkerswhereplayersareabletopracticeinaspaciousenvironment.

Allevawasrecentlyappointedtoafive-yeartermontheprestigiousNCAAMen’sBasketballCommittee,reinforcinghispositionasoneofthemostrespectedathleticadministratorsinthecountry. In2008-09,all20LSUsportscompetedinNCAApostseasonplayforthefirsttimeinschoolhistoryandtheTigerbaseballteamwonthenationalchampionship.ThispastyearLSUrankedsecondamongSoutheasternConferenceteamsintheLearfieldDirector’sCupAll-SportsstandingsandfinishedintheTop20forthesixthyearinarow. AllevaensuresthattheCoxCommunicationsAcademicCenterforStudent-Athletesisafirst-classfacilitythatprovidesstudent-athletestheresourcesnecessaryforsuccessintheclassroomandpersonaldevelopment.Thefacilitywasrecentlyenhancedbytheadditionofamediatrainingcenterthatgivesstudent-athletesvaluableassistanceinimprovingtheircommunicationsskills.Andwithastrongemphasisoncommunityserviceandoutreachprograms,theimplementationunderAlleva’sdirectionofthe“GeauxGivers”programfostersarelationshipbetweenthelocalcommunityandLSUstudent-athletes,whoregularlyparticipateinphilanthropicevents. Sophomore Andrew Presley proved to be the team’s top freshman a year ago as he made a total of eight tournament appearances as part of one of the more talented lineups in all of college golf. A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Presley wrapped up his freshman campaign with a 74.1 scoring average while earning one top-10 finish and three top-20 finishes during his rookie season with the Tigers. He was actually a part of LSU’s lineup that defended its team title at the 2011 Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate last spring. While sophomores Franco Castro, Smylie Kaufman and Landon Lyons saw playing time a season ago as freshmen, they welcome a star-studded recruiting class to Baton Rouge this season that features the likes of rookie stars Stewart Jolly (Birmingham, Ala.), Myles Lewis (New Orleans) and Curtis Thompson (Coral Springs, Fla.) as each ranked among the nation’s Top 50 recruits for the Class of 2011. Despite their youth, the Tigers earned their place in the 2011-12 preseason rankings with a No. 17 national ranking in the Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 released in late August. The Tigers opened the new season with an appearance at the Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic for which they earned an eighth-place finish against a tremendous field with their opening score of 9-over par 873. While Yi set the pace for LSU with a tie for third place on the leaderboard, Castro tied for 21st place, Thompson finished in 32nd place and both Kaufman and Presley tied for 50th place in their season debut in the event held at The Farm Golf Club. LSU’s 2011-12 regular season is highlighted by a pair of home tournaments with the third-annual David Toms Intercollegiate being held Oct. 17-18 at Southern Trace Country Club in Shreveport, La., and the 34th LSU National Invitational returning to the University Club in Baton Rouge on March 31-April 1. The Tigers will look to defend team titles at both home events as they welcome 11 teams

to Shreveport for the third-annual David Toms Intercollegiate and 12 teams to Baton Rouge for the 34th LSU National Invitational in their regular-season finale. The field at the David Toms Intercollegiate includes such teams as Kansas State, Lamar, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana Tech, Mississippi State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, SMU, South Alabama and Tulsa, while the field at the LSU National Invitational features the likes of Boston College, Furman, Iowa, Iowa State, UL-Lafayette, Louisiana Tech, Michigan, Minnesota, UNC-Wilmington and Chattanooga. The Tigers are also set to compete in such events as the Jack Nicklaus Invitational (Oct. 10-11) in Dublin, Ohio, the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational (Oct. 23-25) in Windermere, Fla., the John Hayt Invitational (Feb. 26-28) in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., the Louisiana Classics (March 5-6) in Lafayette, La., the Louisiana Tech Bulldog Invitational (March 11-13) in Choudrant, La., and the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate (March 25-27) in Awendaw, S.C. The SEC Men’s Golf Championships return to St. Simons Island, Ga., for the 12th-straight season as the Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club will play host to the event for the 10th time during that span. This year’s event will be held April 20-22 as the Tigers enter the season with top-five finishes for each of the last three seasons, including a fifth-place finish in 2011. The NCAA’s format for postseason play has

been a smashing success since it was instituted three years ago as Texas A&M (2009) and Augusta State (2010, 2011) have been crowned national champions in the title match following an eight-team match play tournament at the NCAA Championships. The University of Southern California will play host to the 2012 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships at Riviera Golf Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., from May 29-June 3. In its current format, the NCAA individual champion is determined in 54 holes of medal play with the top eight squads from the 30-team field earning a spot in a seeded match play tournament to crown the NCAA champion. The team with the lowest score after three rounds of competition will play the team with the eighth-lowest score, the second-place team will play the seventh-place team and so on in single-elimination match play until a champion is crowned. The idea is that the newly-established format is a more attractive option for television coverage of the NCAA Championships in the future. Teams will qualify for a spot in the 30-team field at the NCAA Championships through one of six NCAA Regional tournaments held across the country from May 17-19. Thirteen teams will be selected to compete in each regional tournament with the top-five teams earning a spot in the field at the 2012 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships.

The2010-11seasonsawtherebirthofoneofLSU’sproudesttraditionsastheTigersplayedhosttothe2011LSUNationalInvitationalatthenewly-renovatedUniversityClubinBatonRouge.Followinga19-yearhiatus,theTigersdefendedtheirhometurfbyclaimingtheirfourthteamchampionshipduringabreakthroughseasonasoneoftheeliteprogramsincollegegolf. TheTigersplayedhosttotheLSUNationalInvitationalfor32-straightyearsfrom1961-92astheeventearnedareputationasoneofthenation’spremiereventsduringitsera.Inall,theTigersclaimed10teamtitlesandeightindividualtitlesattheLSUNationalInvitationalbeforetheirvictoryinthefirsteventheldatthenew-lookUniversityClubayearago. ThecourseattheUniversityClubwasre-designedundertheguidanceofToms

andarchitectJimLipe,whodesignedtheoriginalUniversityClubin1998.Thecourseiscarvedintonearly300acresoflandjustsevenmilessouthoftheLSUcampusonNicholsonDrive.ItcomesasnosurprisethattheUniversityClubhasalreadybeenselectedasanNCAAMen’sGolfRegionalhostsiteforthe2013season,markingthefirsttimeintheillustrioushistoryoftheLSUmen’sgolfprogramthattheTigerswillserveashoststoanNCAApostseasontournamentonitshomecourse. Thechallenging18-hole,par-72courseatUniversityClubwillplayto7,700yardsfromitschampionshipteesandfeaturewidefairwaysborderedbypinehammocksandnativegrasses,inadditionto2,000feetofbeautifulbulkhead.Inaddition,thelakeareashavebeenincreasedby110,000cubicyardsintotalandmorethan500treeshavebeenaddedthroughoutthecoursetoprovideachallengingtestofgolfforanyoneplayingtheUniversityClub. Notonlythat,butthecoursenowhasoneofthemostimpressivefinishingholesingolfasthe18thholeonthebackninefeaturesanewchampionship“Tiger”teewithabeautifulsix-goothighwoodbulkhead.Thelakewasexpandednearthegreen,whereanadditional180feetofbulkheadwasalsoadded.

PriortohisstintsatAlabamaandLSU,WarrenservedtwoyearsastheassistantgolfprofessionalatHiddenMeadowsGolfClubinNorthport,Ala.,andoneyearastheheadgolfinstructorattheGoldenBearGolfCenterinFortLauderdale,Fla.HealsoservedasanassociategolfprofessionalatLagoMarCountryClubinPlantation,Fla.,andasaninstructorfortheMarkWoodGolfLearningCenterinFortLauderdale. John Peterson Crowned 2011 nCAA ChampionLSU senior John Peterson certainly provided the highlight of the 2010-11 campaign with his thrilling one-stroke victory at the NCAA Championships after firing a 5-under par 211 at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla. After opening with a modest 2-over 74 in the first round, Peterson fired a competitive course record 7-under 65 in the second round before closing out the championship with an even-par 72 in the final round to clinch the title by one shot over UCLA’s National Player of the Year Patrick Cantlay. Peter-son’s title was clinched on the 54th and final hole when he sank a five-foot putt for birdie for an even-par 72 in the final round. He seemed to fall out of contention after posting a 4-over 40 on the front nine, but stormed back to reclaim the lead with a brilliant 4-under 32 on the back nine en route to his one-stroke victory. With the win, Peterson became the third LSU Tiger in program history to win the national championship, joining past greats Fred Haas, Jr. (1937) and Earl Stewart (1941).

Peterson earns Second Top 10 finish at nCAAsNot only did Peterson become the third Tiger in program history to win the NCAA individual crown, but he became the first Tiger in history to earn back-to-back top-10 finishes in the event after tying for sixth place on the NCAA Championships leaderboard during a breakout junior season in 2010. In fact, Peterson also fired a 54-hole score of 5-under par 211 at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn., en route to his first career top-10 finish in national competition. With back-to-back NCAA Championship scores of 5-under par 211, Peterson owns the lowest score in relation to par for a Tiger in the event since at least 1985.

LSU golf Makes History in Sweep of nCAA ChampionshipsWith Peterson’s victory at the 2011 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Champi-onships, LSU made history as it became the first college golf program to sweep NCAA individual titles after Lady Tiger freshman Austin Ernst claimed the women’s crown about two weeks before the Tiger senior. Ernst fired a 7-under par 281 in four rounds at the 2011 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships held at The Traditions Club in College Station, Texas. Ernst’s performance actually helped lead the Lady Tigers to their best finish in team history at the NCAA Championships as they earned a third-place finish overall in the 2011 season finale.

Tigers Travel to Stillwater for nCAA TourneyThe Tigers competed at the NCAA Championships for the second-straight season while wrapping up the 2010-11 campaign with their 21st-place fin-ish in the 30-team field following three rounds of medal play at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater Okla. After finishing in 24th place in the team

standings at the 2010 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships, the Tigers posted a team score of 41-over par 905 in 54 holes en route to 21st place in the final team standings. LSU’s performance at the NCAA Championships brought an end to the 2010-11 campaign as the Tigers were among six SEC programs to compete at the NCAA Championships. Georgia earned itself a national runner-up finish in the eight-team match play tournament for the team title, while Alabama (14th place), Arkansas (15th place), Florida (23rd place) and Tennessee (24th place) were also part of the 30-team field.

Peterson named first-Team All-American in 2011After being crowned the 2011 NCAA individual champion, Peterson was one of just 11 players nationwide to be selected as a PING First-Team All-American following the NCAA Championships. With his win, Callaway also presented Peterson with the 2011 Arnold Palmer Award that is given each season to the individual champion of the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships. Peterson became the ninth different LSU golfer to earn First-Team All-America honors during his career, which also includes Fred Haas, Jr. (1937), Earl Stewart (1941), Sonny Ellis (1943), Gardner Dickinson (1948), Johnny Pott (1955), B.R. McLendon (1967), Wayne DeFrancesco (1979) and David Toms (1988, 1989). He was also named a Golfweek Second-Team All-Ameri-can following the 2010-11 campaign.

Andrew Loupe Joins Peterson as 2011 All-AmericanFellow senior Andrew Loupe was also honored as an All-American for his performance during the 2010-11 season after wrapping up his career as the No. 40-ranked golfer in the NCAA on the season according to the final Golf-week individual rankings. Loupe received Honorable Mention All-America honors from both PING and Golfweek for the second year in a row following his first career awards following his junior season in 2010. With Peterson and Loupe each earning All-America accolades in 2010 and 2011, it marked the first time that two Tigers received All-America honors in back-to-back seasons since Greg Lesher and David Toms in 1988 and 1989.

Tigers earn nCAA Qualifying Spot at east RegionalWith a fourth-place finish at the 2011 NCAA East Regional Championships held at the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., the Tigers earned the right to compete at the NCAA Championships for the second-straight season. LSU fired a score of 4-under par 284 in the final round en route to a team score of 16-over 880 in 54 holes to grab one of five automatic qualifying spots into the NCAA Championships. The No. 2-seeded Tigers joined first-place Duke, runner-up Georgia Tech, third-place Oklahoma and fifth-place Kent State in qualifying for the national tourney from the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech. Tigers Place fifth at SeC ChampionshipsLSU kicked off the 2011 postseason by finishing in fifth place in the team standings at the SEC Men’s Golf Championships held at the Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Ga., marking the third-straight season in which the Tigers placed in the top five of the team standings at the conference tournament. The Tigers finished in a tie for fourth place in 2009 before securing a fifth place finish in 2010, marking the first time since 1991-93 that they have finished among the top-five teams at the SEC Championships in three consecutive seasons. The Tigers recorded a 54-hole team score of 25-over par 865 to take a fifth-place finish in 2011. Peterson led the way once again as he nearly took home the SEC individual title with a runner-up finish in the final standings. After posting a 1-under 209 in 54 holes of stroke play, Peterson dropped a one-hole playoff to Florida’s Andres Echavarria for the title.

Tigers Capture four Team Titles in Regular SeasonThe 2010-11 campaign proved to be the most successful for the Tigers on the course in 25 years as the squad captured a total of four tournament championships for the first time since 1985-86. After capturing a pair of team titles during the 2010 fall season with wins at the Gopher Invitational in the season opener on Sept. 12-13 and David Toms Intercollegiate on Oct. 18-19, the Tigers matched their performance with a pair of victories during the 2011 spring season within a week’s time in defending their crown at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate on March 27-29 and LSU National Invi-tational in their regular season finale on April 2-3. LSU continued its recent run of success while capturing a total of 10 team titles over the past three seasons, which includes three titles apiece in 2008-09 and 2009-10.

Tigers Rank Among nation’s Top 10 in 2010-11On the strength of their performance, the Tigers were a staple in the na-tional rankings throughout the 2010-11 campaign. After kicking off the sea-son with a No. 15 ranking in the Golfweek Preseason Top 25, LSU climbed all the way to No. 6 in the Golfstat Top 25 and No. 8 in both the Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches’ Top 25 and Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index to end the fall season and kick off the spring season in 2011. After winning four tournaments and finishing in 21st place in the 30-team field at NCAAs, the Tigers ended the campaign ranked among the nation’s Top 15 at No. 11 by Golfweek and No. 15 by Golfstat in the final rankings of 2010-11.

gutgsell Claims David Toms Title, earns national HonorsWhile Peterson may have garnered most of the headlines for the Tigers in 2010-11, it was junior standout Austin Gutgsell who posted the lowest tour-nament score of the campaign as he fired a career-low 10-under par 206 to take home the individual crown at the David Toms Intercollegiate during the fall season. Gutgsell fired rounds of 3-under 69, 4-under 68 and 3-under 69 en route to his first title of his collegiate career. His winning score of 10-un-der 206 is tied as the fourth-lowest in relation to par by an LSU Tiger since 1985. Not only that, but Gutgsell was honored as the Golfweek National Player of the Week for his winning performance with the second-annual David Toms Intercollegiate.

gutgsell, Yi named All-America Scholars by Cleveland golfThe Tigers were not only standouts on the golf course during the 2010-11 season as they were also honored for their outstanding effort in the class-room. Gutgsell and fellow junior Sang Yi were recognized as Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars for 2011. They were among 138 players in NCAA Division I to be named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Gutgsell was honored for maintaining a 3.45 GPA during his collegiate career. Yi has posted a stellar GPA of his own at 3.40 for his career. With their selection, Gutgsell and Yi are the first Tigers to be honored as Academic All-Americans since Chip McDonald in 1996. In addition, LSU featured seven selections to the SEC Academic Honor Roll as Gutgsell and Yi were joined by Loupe, Peterson, Smylie Kaufman, Ken Looper and Clayton Rotz.

A member of the LSU men’s golf program was crowned individual medalist at the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships for the first time in 70 years as senior All-American John Peterson put an exclamation point onto the end of a heralded career on June 2, 2011, with a national championship after firing a 54-hole score of 5-under par 211 at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla. After firing a competitive course record 7-under 65 in the second round, Peterson finished with an even-par 72 in the final round for a dramatic one-shot victory over UCLA’s Patrick Cantlay. Peterson joined LSU greats Fred Haas, Jr. (1937) and Earl Stewart (1941) as an NCAA champion as he was the team’s top NCAA finisher since Perry Moss tied for fourth place in 1991.

The LSU golf program actually made history with Peterson’s victory as it became the first school during the history of the NCAA Championships to sweep the men’s and women’s individual crowns in the same season. Lady Tiger freshman Austin Ernst took home the NCAA women’s crown nearly two weeks before in the event hosted by Texas A&M at The Traditions Golf Club in College Station. “This is an unbelievable feeling. I can’t really describe it. It hasn’t sunk in for me yet,” Peterson said after his victory. “I’m probably most excited about getting to walk out to the 50-yard line in Tiger Stadium one night next year at a football game. If they let me do that, I want to walk out there in front of 90,000 people with Chuck (Winstead) and Shane (Warren) and these guys who’ve helped me.

“I’m just so proud of this team and how far we’ve come these last four years. I know we would have liked to play better as a team this week, but we’ve had a great season.” After wrapping up his round at approximately 1:30 p.m. CDT with a one-shot lead over Georgia Tech star James White and a two-shot advantage over the contending trio of Cantlay, Harris English of Georgia and Luke Guthrie of Illinois, Peterson endured many anxious moments in the clubhouse while he watched the contenders try to match his number in the afternoon round at Karsten Creek. After White made bogey on the par-three No. 3 to drop to 3-under par for the championship, no one at the top of the leaderboard would pull to within one shot of Peterson again until the final group approached the par-five 18th hole when Cantlay stood over a 16-foot eagle putt trailing Peterson by two at 3-under. Cantlay, the National Player of the Year who birdied the par-four 17th hole to draw to within two shots of Peterson’s lead, fired a 4-iron to within 16 feet of the flag on the 18th green to give himself a left-to-right putt back up the hill for his eagle attempt. The UCLA freshman burned the right side of the cup before holing out with a birdie and ending a single stroke behind Peterson on the leaderboard with a score of 4-under 212 for three rounds. Five golfers finished four shots back in a tie for third place at 1-under 215, while White was five back in a tie for eighth place at even-par 216 and English tied for 10th place at 1-over par 217. There’s no doubt that the championship was won on the back nine, which Peterson played at 13-under par for the tournament after playing the front nine at a combined 8-over par during his three rounds. “We went back to the hotel after the round,” Peterson said. “I just tried to keep my mind off of it as much as I could, but I had to charge up my phone because I was hitting refresh so many times. I probably won’t be able to even go to sleep tonight. I’m feeling so many different things right now.”

Despite teeing off at 8:10 a.m. CDT as part of the very first wave of the day with a one-stroke lead for the first 36 holes, the final round proved to be anything but a smooth ride to the finish for Peterson as his national title hopes appeared dashed after turning with a 4-over 40 on his front nine. As the only championship contender on the course in the morning round, Peterson then found himself in a tie for 10th place as he headed to the back nine with a score of 1-under for the championship. But as he had done throughout his collegiate career, Peterson stormed back to retake the lead thanks to his near perfect back nine in which he carded four birdies with no bogeys for a 4-under par 32. After crawling back to 3-under par with birdies at the par-three 11th hole and par-five 14th hole, Peterson went out in style in his final round as an LSU Tiger with back-to-back birdies at the par-four 17th and par-five 18th holes. On the 17th hole, Peterson fired a 4-iron into the wind from 180 yards to within seven feet of the cup as he finished with a birdie. He then followed by hitting his second shot on the par-five 18th hole over the green with the ball coming to rest in the long rough. But he then took a full-swing flop shot that rolled five feet past the hole for yet another birdie opportunity. Peterson’s putt circled all 360 degrees of the cup before falling for a birdie, eliciting an emotional fist pump from the Tiger senior as he regained the overall lead. All Peterson could do at that point was just sit and wait as the rest of those trailing him on the leaderboard prepared to begin their rounds. It would be another six hours before Peterson learned his fate with Cantlay rolling his eagle putt wide right of the cup on the 54th and final hole of medal play. Peterson was actually on the driving range warming up for a potential playoff with Cantlay when he heard the news that the putt was missed and he had finally won his national

championship. A playoff for the NCAA title would have been a fitting end to Peterson’s senior season after competing in three already that spring. Peterson defeated teen phenom Jordan Speith to take home the Jones Cup before the start of the spring collegiate season in February 2011. He also dropped a pair of playoffs to Florida standout Andres Echavarria for the SEC individual title and teammate Andrew Loupe for a spot in the PGA Tour’s Zurich Classic leading up to NCAA postseason play. “I knew he (Patrick Cantlay) was going to make that putt and we would be going to a playoff. That is how this season has been for me this year,” Peterson said. “It’s funny how that seems to happen to me this year in the biggest tournaments. It was a great feeling when he missed his putt.” By winning the 2011 NCAA individual crown, Peterson capped one of the most prolific careers for an LSU Tiger as he became the fifth three-time All-American in program history, joining a list with the likes of Eddie Merrins (1952-54), B.R. McLendon (1965-67), Rob McNamara (1984-87) and David Toms (1986-89). Peterson led the way for the No. 9-ranked and No. 10-seeded Tigers throughout the week as LSU earned a 21st-place finish in the final team standings with a 54-hole team score of 41-over par 905. The Tigers improved upon their 24th-place finish at the NCAA Championships a season ago with their top finish in the tournament since an 18th-finish in 1997. Junior Sang Yi carded his lowest score of the tournament in the final round with a 2-under par 70. Yi posted a total of four birdies to go along with just two bogeys to climb into a tie for 88th place in the final standings with a 54-hole score of 13-over 229. The Tigers also counted scores of 9-over par 81 by senior Ken Looper and 10-over par 82 by junior Austin Gutgsell as part of its team score of 17-over 305 in the final round. Looper wrapped up

in a tie for 125th place at 21-over 237 on the week, while Gutgsell followed one shot back in 128th place at 22-over 238. Senior All-American Andrew Loupe shot an 18-over 90 in the final round to finish the event in a tie for 141st place overall in the event. Loupe still earned All-America honors as one of the nation’s top players of 2011. “We didn’t drive the ball straight enough this week to be successful as a team on this golf course,” said LSU head coach Chuck Winstead. “But you can’t take away from what this group has done for LSU Golf. I love these guys and wish this week would have gone better for them as a group. They’ve done things for their time here to restore this program to where it should be. I’m proud of each and every one of them.” Peterson also talked about his fellow seniors and the recognition they helped bring back to one of the most storied programs in all of college golf during their four years together. “It makes me extremely glad that I came to LSU,” Peterson said. “When I was coming out of high school, I was a pretty good player, but I wasn’t a great player by any means. We weren’t even that good when we got here four years ago. Andrew and I and the rest of this senior class have really pushed ourselves toward this point. It’s been an unbelievable time for us and we know this program is only going to get better.”

After posting a team score of 1-over par 289 in the final round, the No. 9-ranked LSU men’s golf team defended its team championship with a record-setting performance at the second-annual David Toms Intercollegiate held at The Country Club of Louisiana with a collegiate course record tournament score of 16-under 848 in 54 holes. The Tigers doubled the previous 54-hole team record of 8-under par at The Country Club of Louisiana that was set three times in 12 previous events held at the course. The squad also matched its lowest team score in relation to par in three decades as it also fired a 16-under 848 at the University Club Intercollegiate in 2004. The Tigers captured a two-stroke victory over the No. 8-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks after kicking off the final round with a seven-stroke lead over their Southeastern Conference rivals. Arkansas, which fired a 4-under 284 in the final round, actually cut LSU’s lead down to a single stroke on the back nine with just three holes to play, but the Tigers held on to take their second title of the 2010 fall season . Not only did LSU capture its second team title of the season with the win, but junior Austin Gutgsell fired a 3-under 69 in the final round to take home his first medalist honor as he fired a career-low 54-hole score of 10-under 206 in three rounds to win the individual title by a comfortable four shots. “We had a great week as a team. Playing at The Country Club of Louisiana in our home event gave us a chance to play 10 guys, which is critical for our program to get 10 guys that kind of experience,” said LSU head coach Chuck Winstead. “Certainly, we made it harder on ourselves today relative to the team title, but to have Austin Gutgsell play the way he did, and have the younger guys play the way they did this week are just some signs of where we are headed.” While playing as an individual, Gutgsell was outstanding in winning the David Toms Intercollegiate as he sandwiched a career-low 4-under 68 in the second round between matching rounds of 3-under 69 during the first and final rounds for a career-low 54-hole tournament score of 10-under par 206. Gutgsell, who opened the event with a previous career best of 1-over 217 in a top-five finish at last year’s John Hayt Invitational, tied the fourth-lowest individual score by an LSU golfer since 1985. A native of Mandeville, La., Gutgsell was locked in a tight battle with teammate Ken Looper in the chase for the individual title as each reached 9-under par for the tournament as teams started to make the turn in the final round. The duo opened the final round in a tie for top spot on the leaderboard. Gutgsell, who teed off from the back nine in the final round, got off to a sluggish start with two bogeys in back-to-back holes on No. 14 and No. 15 to fall to 1-over for his round. But he quickly turned it around in his final 12 holes while carding four birdies during that stretch, includ-ing his last of the day at the par-four seventh hole to drop to 10-under par and take the clubhouse lead at approximately 1:10 p.m. “I just made it easy on myself because I hit a lot of fairways and a

lot of greens and I made the putts when I needed to for momentum. I was able to do everything pretty well,” Gutgsell said. “It felt great to post my number and wait for the other guys to come in. I got to go back out and watch my team win the title in the back nine. That was just as great a feeling for me to see us win the team title.” Despite falling out of the running on the back nine with double bogey on the par-four 10th hole and bogey on the par-four 18th hole, Looper holed out in the final group of the day at about 3 p.m. with a round of 1-under 73 for a score of 6-under 210 to finish four shots back in a four-way tie for second place. Looper, who opened with rounds of 2-under 70 and 5-under 67 on the first day, finished on the Top 10 of the leaderboard for the third time in three tournament appearances of the fall. Looper teamed with senior All-American John Peterson to lead the LSU starting five to the team crown as Peterson also finished in a tie for second place overall with a three-round score of 6-under 210, including a 2-under 70 in the final round. Peterson twice finished second on the leaderboard at the David Toms Intercollegiate as a junior in 2009 and as a senior in 2010. Fellow All-American Andrew Loupe picked up his first top-10 finish

of the year as he posted a 2-over par 74 in the final round to finish in a tie for eighth place with a tournament score of 4-under 212. While also competing as part of LSU’s tournament lineup, junior Sang Yi and freshman Smylie Kaufman posted matching rounds of 1-over 73 for the team score in the final round. Yi finished in a tie for 29th with a score of 1-over 217, while Kaufman followed in a tie for 46th with a score of 7-over 223. Freshman Andrew Presley fired a 2-under 70 in the final round to earn his second-consecutive top-20 finish as he tied for 16th place at 2-under par 214. Franco Castro tied for 23rd place at even-par 216, while Clayton Rotz tied for 37th place at 3-over 219 and Landon Lyons tied for 50th place at 10-over 226.

After facing a two-stroke deficit when teeing off in the final round of the 2011 LSU National Invitational, the No. 9-ranked LSU men’s golf team posted the second-lowest team score for the afternoon while defending its home turf at the University Club and capturing its fourth tournament crown of the 2010-11 campaign with a 54-hole score of 22-over par 886. The Tigers posted a 9-over 297 in the championship finale to finish just one stroke ahead of the nation’s No. 46-ranked squad from Chattanooga. The Mocs fired the lowest round of the afternoon with a 4-over 292 to finish runner-up to the Tigers with a team score of 23-over 887 for the weekend. No. 12-ranked Iowa finished in third place at 29-over par 893, while No. 45-ranked Michigan, the second-round leader, placed fourth at 34-over 898 and Minnesota place fifth overall at 38-over 902.In a rare feat, the Tigers actually captured their second team title of the week in defending their crown against a strong 15-team field at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate. LSU claimed four tournament championships for the 2010-11 season as they also picked up two wins in the fall at the Gopher Invitational (Sept. 12-13) and David Toms Intercollegiate (Oct. 18-19). The Tigers won four tournament titles in a season for the first time since the 1985-86 campaign. “The golf course played great this weekend. This is exactly what we expect when playing a championship course,” said LSU head coach Chuck Winstead. “The University Club provided the kind of challenge that we expected throughout the event. We also saw some crowds that we never see anywhere else and I know that our guys enjoyed their first experience competing here at the University Club. “What’s even more rewarding for this program is the positive feedback we received from visiting coaches and players and how much they enjoyed the course. This is a tremendous venue for hosting cham-pionship golf at the collegiate level, and we look forward to having that opportunity again in the future.” The Tigers became winners for the 11th time in six seasons with Winstead leading the program. That includes 10 victories in 34 tourna-ment appearances leading up to the 2011 LSU National Invitational for the most for a three-year stretch for the LSU men’s golf program since winning 10 tournaments for the 1983-84 season through the 1985-86 season when Tiger great David Toms was a freshman.

Senior All-American Andrew Loupe fired the lowest score of the day for the Tigers with an even-par score of 72 as he picked up his team-leading fourth top-five finish of the season by with a fifth place. Loupe followed 3-over 75 in the first round and 1-under 71 in the second round with an even-par 72 in the third and final round to finish in fifth place overall with a 54-hole score of 2-over 218. While Loupe led the way with a 72 in the final round, fellow senior All-American John Peterson set the pace throughout the weekend while finishing in a tie for third place on the leaderboard at 1-over 217. After finishing the first day of action at 2-under par for the championship with scores of even-par 72 and 2-under par 70, Peterson carded a 3-over 75 in the final round to secure his second top five and team-leading sixth top-10 finish for his senior season. Peterson actually finished in the Top 10 of the leaderboard for the fourth-straight tournament, as he built momentum for the postseason that culminated with his national championship victory at the 2011 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships. Junior Sang Yi just missed earning his first top-10 finish of the campaign by tying for 12th place overall at 9-over 225 for the cham-pionship, including a 2-over 74 in the final round. Rounding out LSU’s lineup were senior Ken Looper in a tie for 19th place at 11-over 227 and junior Austin Gutgsell in a tie for 47th place at 22-over 238. “It was difficult out there today. We certainly had to overcome our share of adversity to get the victory for our program,” Winstead said. “I don’t think there are two guys you would rather have on your side coming down the stretch than John Peterson and Andrew Loupe. Those guys are mentally tough with the round, which is something they have developed during their four years in our program.” Five Tigers also competed as individuals at the LSU National Invitational, as senior Clayton Rotz and freshman Andrew Presley led the way with a pair of top-10 finishes on the leaderboard. Presley fired back-to-back rounds of even-par 72 in the first and second rounds and a 5-over 77 in the final round to capture his first career top-10 finish with an eighth-place finish at 5-over 221. Rotz finished in the Top 10 of the leaderboard for the second time on the season with a score of 6-over par 222. Freshman Franco Castro tied for 35th place at 17-over 233, fresh-man Smylie Kaufman tied for 44th place at 20-over 236 and freshman Landon Lyons finished in 46th place at 21-over 237.

Chattanooga’s Stephan Jaeger led wire-to-wire to earn his first career individual collegiate championship as the only player in the field to break par for 54 holes with a total score of 7-under 209. While the course proved to be a difficult challenge for the rest of the field, Jaeger tamed the University Club with rounds of 2-under 70, 5-under 67 and even par-72 en route to a seven-stroke victory over Vince India of Iowa.

The squad matched its lowest score in nearly three decades as it also fired a 16-under 848 at the University Club Intercollegiate in 2004. The Tigers captured a two-stroke victory over the No. 8-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks. Not only did LSU capture its second team title of the season with the win, but junior Austin Gutgsell fired a career-low 54-hole score of 10-under 206 in three rounds to win his first career medalist honor by a comfortable four shots. That effort tied the fourth-lowest invidiual score by an LSU golfer since 1985. Looper and Peterson each tied for second place with scores of 6-under 210, while fellow senior Andrew Loupe tied for eighth place at 4-under 212.

one stroke of the lead entering the final three holes of the final round, the Tigers finished only two shots back of No. 5-ranked Alabama for the team championship. Their performance put the finishing touches onto the end of a stellar fall season that also featured team titles at the Gopher Invitational and David Toms Intercollegiate. Loupe was the team’s top performer after tying for fifth place with a score of 2-over 218.

Loupe came up four shots short of defending his Louisiana Classics individual championship as fired posted three 70s for a 54-hole score of 6-under 210 to tie for second place. Loupe nearly completed the sweep with an individual championship as he tied NC State’s Mitchell Sutton for the top spot on the leaderboard at 6-under 207 after 54 holes. Both Loupe and Peterson were honored as First-Team All-SEC selections following the tournament. NCAA MEN’S GOLf CHAMpIONSHIpSmay 31-June 2, 2011Stillwater, okla.Karsten Creek Golf Club (Par 72)For the first time in 70 years, a member of the LSU men’s golf program was crowned the NCAA individual champion as Peterson wrapped up a heralded collegiate career with a national championship after firing a winning score of 5-under par 211 at Karsten Creek. Peterson’s performance included a competitive course record 7-under 65 en route to a dramatic one-shot victory over UCLA freshman and National Player of the Year Patrick Cantlay. It also marked the second year in a row in which Peterson finished with a score of 5-under par at the NCAA Championships as he tied for sixth place in his debut at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn., in 2010. Peterson joined past greats Fred Haas, Jr. (1937) and Earl Stewart (1941) as an NCAA champion. The Tigers wrapped up the 2011 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships in 21st place in medal play with their team score of 41-over 905. Augusta State defeated Georgia, 3-2, in the championship match to win its second-straight NCAA team title.

SEC GOLfERS ARE LEADERS ON THE LINkS Throughout the rich history of the Southeastern Conference the league has provided a strong tradition of excellence on the links with its men’s golf programs, and the 2010-11 season was no different as LSU, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee led the charge with an appearance in the 2011 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships held at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla. Georgia proved to be the class of the SEC in 2011 while advancing to the national championship match against defending NCAA champion Augusta State. But the Bulldogs came up just short of winning the national title after suffering a 3-2 defeat to the Jaguars as Augusta State became the first team to capture back-to-back national championships since Houston in 1984-85.

But while Georgia finished runner-up for the team title, LSU senior John Peterson became the first SEC golfer since Florida’s Nick Gilliam

in 2001 to be crowned the NCAA individual champion with his one-stroke victory over UCLA’s Patrick Cantlay in 54 holes of

stroke play. Peterson fired a 54-hole score of 5-under par 211 at Karsten Creek to wrap up the NCAA Championships as the SEC’s top individual finisher for the second-straight season. He also tied for sixth place in 2010. The conference has captured 10 NCAA team titles in its history with four belonging to both LSU and

Florida, while Georgia has added a pair of its own. A total of 45 SEC teams have finished in the top 10 at the NCAA

Championships since 1985. In addition, seven SEC golfers have won the individual title with 46 individuals finishing in the

top 10 of the leaderboard at the NCAA Championships since 1985.
