Drew Wartenburg continues to reach new heights within Division I competition, taking strides to turn UC Davis cross country into one of the premiere programs on the West Coast.

Wartenburg followed the 2009 season with even more program firsts in 2010, starting with UC Davis’ first-ever Div. I cross country All-American in Jonathan Peterson. The 2010 season also saw the Aggie men win their first team title at the Big West Conference Championship, with Peterson claiming the individual title. For his successes, Wartenburg was honored as the league’s Men’s Coach of the Year while Peterson was voted Male Athlete of the Year.

In September 2011, he was appointed Director of Track and Field and Cross Country.

The 2009 season, Wartenburg’s second as head coach, saw Sarah Sumpter win UC Davis’ first Big West Conference individual champion-ship in its Division I history as the women’s team finished in a program-best second place at the conference meet. Sumpter was named the conference’s Women’s Athlete of the Year, another first for the program. Her individual championship and the postseason honor marked just the second occasion that a freshman has taken both accolades in a season.

The program success has translated to the classroom as well. Calvin Thigpen was named UC Davis’ recipient of the 2010-11 Big West Con-ference Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. Thigpen was a three-time Big West Conference Fall All-Academic team honoree, earning the distinction all three years he was eligible. In 2009, Scott Himmelberger and Kaitlin Gregg each earned CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VIII honors while Himmelberger would go on to earn Academic All-America accolades.

During his first season at the helm of the cross country program, the Aggies finished a program-best second at the Big West Conference Championships and women’s runners Kim Conley and Kaitlin Gregg became the first Aggies to qualify for the NCAA Divi-sion I Championships during the university’s D-I era. Conley and Gregg earned the first D-I all-region honors for the Aggies. In addition, Conley, Gregg and men’s runner K.C. Cody earned all-conference accolades.

His runners have also seen success on the track as well. Calvin Thigpen claimed the 10,000-meter run title at the 2011 Big West Conference meet and in 2008, Conley and Lorin Scott each earned a spot into the regional meet in the 1,500 and

KIM CONLEYAssistant Coach2nd YearUC Davis ’09

Former UC Davis standout Kim Conley returns for her second season on the cross country and track and field coaching staffs as an assistant coach after serving as a volunteer assistant for the 2009 season.

In 2009, Conley lent her expertise as a distance runner to help the women’s side achieve new milestones. Under her shared guidance, Sarah Sumpter won UC Davis cross country’s first Big West Conference individual championship and Women’s Athlete of the Year award while seven Aggies runners participated at the NCAA West Regional.

Prior to her selection to the Aggie staff, Conley completed a four-year cross country and track and field career at UC Davis that still stands amongst the best in Aggie history.

In 2008, Conley and teammate Kaitlin Gregg made program history by becoming the first Aggies to qualify for the NCAA Division I Cham-pionship. She earned All-West Region with her 12th-place showing at the regional, earning her the berth at the national meet.

During the fall seasons, Conley earned all-conference or equivalent honors three times. She was the Division I Independent champion as a freshman in 2004, then added her second All-Div. I Independent honor by placing seventh the following year. In 2008, Conley captured All-Big West Conference accolades with a seventh-place showing.

Conley’s time of 16:17.51 set at the 2008 NCAA Track and Field West Regional in the 5,000 meters stands as a school record and her mark of 4:22.17 in the 1,500 meters currently ranks her No. 2 on UC Davis’ all-time ledger. Additionally she is ninth in the outdoor 800 (2:10.73) and the outdoor 3,000 (9:45.85) and owns the indoor 3,000 record with a time of 9:19.16.

The Santa Rosa, Calif. native has continued her impressive running career, most recently finishing eighth overall at the 2011 USA Cross Country Championships and tenth in the 5,000 at the 2011 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Coached by UC Davis head coach Drew Wartenburg, Conley set per-sonal bests in 2011 in both the 5K (15:38.13) and the 1,500 (4:12.05).

In 2010, Conley finished 18th overall at the USA Winter Cross Country Championships and was runner up at the 2009 USA Club Cross Country Championships.

5,000 while Russell Pfaff qualified in the steeplechase after winning the Big West Conference individual title in the event.

Wartenburg spent the 2007-08 season as an assistant coach for Oregon State’s women’s track and field and cross country teams. In only their third year since reinstating the programs for the 2004-05 season, the Beavers finished 13th at the NCAA West Regional during the cross country season and qualified their lone track and field athlete for the regional meet in the steeplechase - an event Wartenburg helped coach. Additionally, he mentored two Pac-10 Conference finalists in the 1,500 and the sixth-place finisher at the 2008 USATF Junior Nationals in that event.

Wartenburg graduated from Wesleyan University, a liberal arts college in Middlestown, Conn. in 1992, where he lettered in soccer.

DEVIN ELIZONDOVolunteer Assistant1st YearUCLA ‘98

Devin Elizondo joins the men’s and women’s cross country programs for his first year as a volunteer assistant coach with UC Davis.

He began his coaching career with Brentwood School in Los Angeles where he served as head boys’ and girls’ track and field coach and assistant boys’ and girls’ cross country coach. With Elizondo on staff, the boys’ cross country team qualified for state championships on six different occasions and achieved five top-five finishes, placing third as a team in 2001. The girls’ program advanced to the state meet twice as a team and sent an individual on two other occasions. In 2003, a Brentwood School runner won the individual title.

On the track, Elizondo’s athletes have set 23 school records since his appointment as head coach in 2003.

Elizondo also played an active role in coaching education throughout Southern Calif.

He joined the LA84 Foundation in 2007, an organization endowed through surplus funds from the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games that works to serve youth through sport and increase knowledge of sport and its impact on people’s lives. As Associate of Education Services, Elizondo assisted in organizing clinics and workshops for over 1,600 high school cross country and track and field coaches in the Southern Calif. area.

Elizondo has also worked closely with Runner’s Workshop, a sum-mer cross country camp that has served over 13,000 runners since its inception in 1985, since 1994. In his current role as Clinic Presenter, he creates daily lecture series as well as five-day training and two-a-day workouts for the camp participants.

A 1998 graduate of UCLA, Elizondo was a standout member of both the cross country and track and field teams.

He was the No. 2 distance runner behind Olympic silver medalist Meb Keflezighi and helped lead the Bruins to two third-place finishes at the Pac-10 Cross Country Championships. In 1995, he was selected to te All-District IX first team and was chosen as Most Outstanding Freshman in 1994.

On the track, Elizondo was a member of three Pac-10 Championship teams and concluded his four-year career with the Bruins with a third-place finish in the steeplechase, setting a lifetime best time of 8:56.7.

Elizondo graduated from UCLA with a history degree.

A New HomeIn 2008, UC Davis cross country moved to a new home course. The site, located on the southwest corner of the campus boundar-ies near the Putah Creek Cold Water Facility off County Road 98, hosted two meets in its first season.

The Aggies previously held home meets at an on-campus course that meandered through the university’s Arboretum/Shields Grove area. The program later moved the Aggie Open to the nearby Wildhorse Golf Course in 2005 and 2006. The coaching staff hopes the new location can serve as a host site for years to come.

DIRECTIONS1. Exit Highway 113 (Woodland)

2. Exit west on Hutchison Road (first exit), away from the main campus core. Hutchison winds to the right, then back to the left, before ending at County Road 98.

3. Turn left on County Road 98.

4. The course is located approximately one half-mile south of the Primate Research Center and Center for Comparative Medicine, on the right side of the road. Parking for cross country meets will be visibly marked just a short walk from the start/finish area.

the highly successful athletics department by joining the Aggie Pack spirit organization, or enjoy a first-class performance at the Robert & Magrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts.

The university also offers hundreds of student clubs and organizations, including cultural clubs, frater-nities and sororities, faith-based organizations and the Associated Students of UC Davis student government.

For the active Aggie, students may participate in the diverse intramural sports program or join one of the 30-plus sports clubs. In 2004, the Activities & Recreation Center (ARC) opened its doors, providing the campus with its own state-of-the-art fitness venue.

In April, UC Davis hosts Picnic Day, an annual student-run open house. The popular event showcases all that the campus has to offer, attracting students, staff, faculty, parents, alumni and members of the sur-rounding communities.

GETTING AROUNDNestled just southwest of Sacramento, the city

of Davis rests just 15 minutes from an international airport, and contains a downtown station serviced by Greyhound and Amtrak. Centrally located in the Sac-ramento Valley, the town sits equally close to both the finest ski resorts and the Pacific Ocean’s top beaches.

Within Davis and its neighboring towns, both Yolobus and the student-operated Unitrans bus systems offer free transportation to registered undergraduates.

The town boasts more bicycles per capita than any other city in the nation. More than 50 miles of bike paths make the entire town conducive to both riders and pedestrians.

CAMPUS LEADERSHIP

Linda Katehi became the sixth chancellor of the Uni-versity of California, Davis, on August 17, 2009. As chief executive officer, she oversees all aspects of the university’s teaching, research and public service mission.

Chancellor Katehi (kah-TAY-hee) also holds UC Davis faculty appointments in electrical and computer engineering and in women and gender studies. A member of the National Academy of Engineering, she chairs the President’s Com-mittee for the National Medal of Science and is chair of the Secretary of Commerce’s committee for the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. She is a fellow and board member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of many other national boards and committees.

Previously, Chancellor Katehi served as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Il-linois at Urbana-Champaign; the John A. Edwardson Dean of Engineering and professor of electrical and computer engineering at Purdue University; and associate dean for academic affairs and graduate education in the College of Engineering and professor of electrical engineering and

computer science at the University of Michigan. Since her early years as a faculty member, Chancellor

Katehi has focused on expanding research opportunities for undergraduates and improving the education and profes-sional experience of graduate students, with an emphasis on underrepresented groups. She has mentored more than 70 postdoctoral fellows, doctoral and master’s students in electrical and computer engineering. Twenty-one of the 42 doctoral students who graduated under her supervision have become faculty members in research universities in the United States and abroad.

Her work in electronic circuit design has led to numer-ous national and international awards both as a technical leader and educator, 16 U.S. patents, and an additional six U.S. patent applications. She is the author or co-author of 10 book chapters and about 600 refereed publications in journals and symposia proceedings.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in electrical engineer-ing from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, in 1977, and her master’s and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering from UCLA in 1981 and 1984, respectively.

LINDA KATEHI UC Davis Chancellor

Fred Wood assumed the role of Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs on August 1, 2007. Dr. Wood oversees pro-grams and services that enhance the academic and personal development of students, including intercollegiate athletics. He also provides administrative leadership to a Division of over 50 student support programs and to a team of over 800 staff members. In addition, he manages a budget of over 30 million dollars. He advises the Chancellor on mat-ters relating to students, enrollment, access, retention, and campus climate.

Wood earned his bachelor’s and Ph.D. from UC Davis in Chemistry in 1980 and 1984. Soon after graduating, he began his faculty appointment in Chemistry and also served the College of Letters and Science as the Associate Dean, a position he held for 13 years. Most recently he served as the Associate Vice Provost of Undergraduate Studies and Interim Vice Provost of Undergraduate Studies. He is a 2003 graduate of the Harvard University Executive Leadership and Management Institute, and also a graduate of the University of California Management Institute.

Dr. Wood is a member of several professional organiza-tions including American College Personnel Association, National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, and the National Association of College and University Busi-

ness Officers. He also serves on the Council of Deans and Vice Chancellors at UC Davis, as well as over twenty different committees and councils on and off campus.

Several priorities he is focusing on in Student Affairs include building bridges within Student Affairs and with academic affairs; increasing the diversity of our student population by reaching out to students who are disadvan-taged and underrepresented; recruitment and admissions; increasing the number of students transferring to UC Davis from community colleges and helping with their transition; develop an inclusive community for all of our students; work to help new students effectively navigate the university; im-prove retention and graduation; improve accountability and transparency; improve student health; increase fundraising efforts to help support our units and their needs; maintaining affordability for students to attend college; and keeping up with the latest technology to provide our staff, faculty and students with the most up to date and accurate information.

Dr. Wood continues to teach undergraduate students while serving in his administrative role and maintaining a focus on continually improving the services available to undergraduate and graduate students.

SERVING THE UC DAVIS STUDENT-ATHLETE

STUDENT-ATHLETE ACADEMIC SERVICES

UC Davis ranks among the leaders in NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Awards and Academic All-District/America honorees, and has claimed a record three winners of the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. Student-Athlete Academic Services deserves much of the credit for these accomplishments.

The office started in 1988 with a single staff member serving as a centralized resource for academic advising, eligiblity information and campus referrals. The office has since expanded to include additional academic advisors, an athletic aid coordinator, an as-sistant eligibility coordinator and an administrative assistant. It is headed by Nona Richardson, senior as-sociate director of athletics.

The Student-Athlete Academic Services office provides a range of services to student-athletes on all 26 intercollegiate athletics teams, including assistance with course and major selection as well as interpretation and clarification of eligibility rules and issues.

UC Davis student-athletes typically have a mini-mum of three academic advisors: an athletic academic advisor assigned by sport, a college advisor, and a major advisor (if the student has a declared major). Although appointments with the athletic academic advisors are not mandatory at UC Davis, student-athletes might choose to see their athletic academic advisor for issues including:

ATHLETIC TRAINING / SPORTS MEDICINE

Known collectively as “The Healer of Champions”, the UC Davis athletic training staff comprises five full-time certified athletic trainers, a full-time physical therapist/certified athletic trainer and approximately 24 student athletic trainers. Together, they are responsible for providing medical care to the 800-plus student-athletes that compose UC Davis’ 26 varsity teams.

The student athletic trainers serve two to three years with the program, logging in more than 1,500

hours and gaining valuable clinical education in a hands-on environment. The internship is ideal for any student interested in a graduate program in ath-letic training, as well as any medical or allied medical profession.

The ARC Pavilion training room contains exten-sive resources and equipment for the rehabilitation of injured athletes. The staff physical therapist is head-quartered there as well.
