JOHN BLACKBURN, who enters his sixth season as head coach of the Eastern Illinois men’s and women’s tennis programs, continues to help the Panthers compete as annual contenders in the Ohio Valley Conference race. Unfortunately, a rough 2010 season had both squads finish in seventh place in their respective conference races, while also failing to advance to the end-of-season six-team Ohio Valley Conference tournament. However, for the eleventh time in his EIU coaching tenure, Blackburn had a player earn All-OVC kudos, as former standout Jeff Rutherford collected his second First Team honor, and third overall league award, following his senior season. The 2009 campaign saw the men’s and women’s squads finish with 10-13 and 8-13 records, respectively. Both units finished in sixth place in the league, with the men tying for sixth with a 3-5 record and the women sporting a 4-5 mark. Blackburn coached Jeff Rutherford to his second career All-OVC honor, he earned Second Team kudos at the top of the lineup. In 2008, the EIU men and women tied for third and fifth place, respectively, with the Panther men dropping a tough 4-3 first round matchup in the OVC tournament. Three players earned All-OVC honors as Jeff Rutherford was named to the First Team and Jordan Nestrud and Robert Stedman to the Second Team. The EIU women earned the squad’s first-ever national ranking near the start of the 2008 spring season. The Panthers were ranked No. 74 by ITA following a 6-2 start, which included wins over midwest rivals Bradley, IPFW, Northern Illinois, Northern Iowa, Valparaiso, and Western Illinois. At the end of the season, Natalie Martin once again earned First Team All-OVC award kudos.

The men finished at 10-10 and the women at 6-15 in 2006, while his sophomore season in 2007 proved to one of the best in school history. The EIU women vaulted to third in the OVC rankings with two first team selections and the program’s first-ever OVC ‘Freshman of the Year’ honoree. They also had a doubles team earn a national ranking early in the season, also a program first. For the men, Blackburn moved the program back into the OVC Tournament with a fifth place finish as they cracked the regional rankings midway through the year after a 7-1 start to the season. He previously served four years as men’s and women’s coach at Coker College (2002-2005) a NCAA II program located in Hartsville, SC. At Coker, Blackburn was charged with restarting a men’s program that had

been on a one year hiatus from competition. In his tenure there, the men’s team rose to seventh place in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference, which was the highest league finish and win total in over a decade. The women finished sixth in 2005 in the conference championship, and placed three positions higher in the league standings in each of the previous three years. The women’s program also had the best team grade point average for three straight semesters. Prior to that, Blackburn coached at NAIA affiliated Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Florida (1999-2001). Both the men and women were ranked in the NAIA Top 20 two of his three years as head coach, and the women’s team qualified for the NAIA national tournament all three seasons. While there Blackburn coached two Al l -Americans and one Academic All-American. In 1997-98 he was assistant women’s coach at Oklahoma State

and in 1996 he served as both the men’s and women’s assistant at Oklahoma Christian University. From 1993-99, he was an assistant teaching professional with the Edmond (OK) Racquet Club. Blackburn earned an undergraduate degree from Oklahoma Christian in 1996 and a masters from Oklahoma State in 1999.

BARBARA BURKE enters her third year as the athletic director at Eastern Illinois University, after she assumed her duties in June of 2008 to become the ninth full-time director in the 110 years of Panther athletic competition. Working on a five year master plan, Burke has made an immediate impact in her first two years with several facility enhancement projects. Among those projects are a new video scoreboard at O’Brien Field, updated locker rooms for several sport teams, a new floor and graphics in Lantz Arena and new fencing for the baseball, softball and soccer fields. In February, 2010, Burke unveiled the Panthers BluePrint for Success as a campaign for athletic facility enhancements. Burke spent the previous 10 years at Wyoming, serving in a variety of capacities since first joining the staff in March 1998. Since July 2006, she has served as the deputy director of athletics and senior women’s administrator. In that role, she helped to oversee strategic planning for the department, as well as the day-to-day operations of Wyoming’s 17-sport, $19 million athletic program. In addition to her years of service at Wyoming as a senior administrator, Burke has had athletic administration experience at the University of Texas at El Paso (1997-98), Marshall University (1994-97), and West Virginia State University (1992-94). During stints at Wyoming and UTEP, Burke was named interim athletic director at the institutions, serving as both schools made transitions to new athletic directors. A member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of America (NACDA) and National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA), Burke has served on numerous athletic committees, including the NCAA Division

I Women’s Basketball committee (2005-07), Mountain West Conference Championship committee (2004), and Southern Conference Softball Sports/Tournament committee (1995-96). She served as Wyoming’s representative on the Mountain West

Conference transition team as the new league was formed in 1998. Burke was recently selected to serve on the NCAA Women’s Basketball Rules Committee with her appointment beginning in September 2010. Burke also brings years of coaching and playing experience to Eastern Illinois. She was a four-year member of both the softball and basketball teams at Western Michigan University (1976-80), leading the Broncos to the Women’s College Softball World Series in 1980. She was inducted into the WMU Hall of Fame in 1988. A native of Kalamazoo, Mich., Burke started her coaching career at Kalamazoo Central High School, with her first collegiate coaching job coming in 1980 as the head softball coach and assistant basketball coach

at Tennessee Temple University. She followed that with coaching stops at Clearwater Christian College in Florida, Cornerstone College in Michigan, Indiana University Southeast and West Virginia State College. Three times she was named the district coach of the year during her softball and basketball coaching career. Burke earned a bachelor of science degree from Western Michigan in 1980 and a master of education degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 1984.

Eastern Illinois is one of the few schools in the region to have both indoor and outdoor facilities located on campus. The Panthers play their home matches on Rex Darling Courts (pictured above) which were constructed in the late 1990’s to include six modern outdoor tennis courts.

In addition to the Darling Courts, EIU tennis also has use of the Lantz Indoor Fieldhouse (pictured below) which includes five courts for practice and match competition. While also the home of EIU indoor track and field, Panther tennis teams are given ample time on the indoor courts allowing them to practice and compete at any time of the year.
