    ERCO the Light Factory

ERCO specialises in producing engineeringhardware and software for architectural light-ing. First and foremost, we see ourselves asselling light, not luminaires. This approach, which places the immaterial software oflight above the physical hardware of the lumi-naires, has been the trademark of our workfor many years. Thats why we call ourselves:ERCO, the Light Factory.

Light interprets spaces and helps us to per-ceive and experience them. In this sense, weconsider light to be the fourth dimensionof architecture.

ERCOs indoor luminaires, outdoor lumi-naires and lighting control systems constitutean extensive range of lighting equipment forgeneral, comprehensive, architectural light-ing solutions. The luminaire is a lighting tool,a piece of lighting equipment with a specialpractical purpose.

The far-reaching change that lighting tech-

nology is currently undergoing due to newlamps, new lens systems, digitally networkablecontrol gear and the corresponding softwareleads to previously unimagined possibilities. We call this new approach Tune the light.Just as networking has allowed new perspec-tives in lighting technology, so too ERCOsclose-knit organisational network also allowsoptimum logistics and sales advice all aroundthe globe. This brochure presents all the facetsof both the networked architectural lightingand the ERCO Service network.

king good architecture even better throughright lighting is what we see as our cul-

al contribution and the raison dtre of ourivities. Today, ERCO illuminates museums, versities, shop windows, churches, airports, numents, hotels, chain stores, trade fairnds, administrative buildings, parks, privateuses and much more besides. Irrespective ofether the architectural concept emphasisesctionality or presentation: our goal is, and

s always been, to find a solution that doestice to the specific use and architecturaltures of each project.

    ghting qualitiese language of light

Accent lighting usesbrightness contraststo set up hierarchiesof perception. Thisespecially relates tothe use of directedlight to emphasiseareas or objects in thespace. This attracts theview of the observerand enhances spatialawareness.

    Ambient lighting +Accent lighting

Scenic lighting incor-porates the range oflighting effects thatare used for their ownsake either to addatmospheric or deco-rative touches ratherthan because they haveany practical function.Examples include theatmosphere created bya candle on a restau-rant table, an object of

Ambient lighting +Accent lighting +Scenic lighting

Whether lighting a museum, a boutique or apark, there is always a language of light. Thisconcept has evolved over several decades andis now a means for analysing and structuring

lighting projects. The three basic categoriesof this language ambient lighting, accentlighting and scenic lighting go back to theAmerican Richard Kelly, a pioneer of lightingdesign whose projects have included the light-ing of the Seagram Building in New York forMies van der Rohe.

Experience shows that lighting conceptsare considered to be pleasing and success-ful when all three components ambientlighting, accent lighting and scenic lighting are present in a well-balanced relationship.

Light Art or colouredlighting whose mainpurpose is to influenceand change the colourimpression given in aroom.

The ambient lightingcomponent usually con-sists of an evenly dis-tributed light designedfor general visibility. Most standards relatingto purely quantitativelighting design usually

consider this compo-nent of light alone, e.g.regulations for specificilluminance levels atthe workplace.

ghting control system such as the ERCOht System DALI enables the balance of theferent qualities of light to be easily opti-

sed and adjusted to suit changing condi-ns while the building or space is occupied.ch adjustment may be dependent on usage,by modifying light scenes and recallingm manually; or dependent on time, byng timer programs. The effect on the architecture can be com-tely changed at the touch of a button byering the stress of the accent lighting.e style of scenic lighting can be enhancedelectronically controlled, coloured light-effects and dynamic progressions. This inn can only be seen to full advantage whenre is a corresponding reduction in ambientting.

    ghting qualitiesertical illuminance

Wallwashing:ambient lightingSuccessful wallwashingcan be so subtle that itis hardly perceived aswall lighting; insteadthe observer is only

ace can be defined and continually reinter-ted with light. Looking at walls and othertical surfaces, it soon becomes apparentt these are crucial for how architecture isceived. Illuminated walls enable the shaped dimensions of a room to be comprehendedd cause the entire room to appear bright. Al illuminated with perfect uniformity has

almost immaterial effect. Objects such asotos, posters or paintings can be optimallywed. We refer to the lighting tools for thisd of lighting as wallwashers. ERCO hasen developing and perfecting such specialminaires for decades. The result is a range oftruments for illuminating vertical surfacest is unparalleled in terms of its scope and

    iety.

The dual-focus wall-washer an ERCOspeciality producesparticularly good uni-formity across the walldue to its wallwasherreflector. Furthermore, the lamp is completelyshielded by an anti-dazzle cone, resultingin exceptional visualcomfort.

Wallwashing:accent lightingSelectively lightingcertain surfaces thatdelineate a given spaceallows hierarchies ofperception to be dis-creetly created, whichinfluences our percep-tion of the spatialdimension. The surfaceproperties of walls, such as their colour, texture and physicalconstruction, are effec-tively emphasised byvertical illumination.

aware of a pleasantbrightness in theroom. The diffuse lightreflected from the wallprovides the ambientlighting.

Wallwashing:scenic lightingThe vertical surfacesof a space can be trans-formed by the use ofappropriate lightingtools into projectionscreens for dynamicscenic effects. Projec-tions or changingpatterns of colourcan be eye-catchingand attractive.

Tune the LightScenography in the lighting network

Our new catch phrase Tune thelight is a logical developmentof our Light not luminairesapproach. Digitally networkedelectronic controls enable mul-tiple lighting parameters tobe manipulated. Light can bemanipulated even more easily, more individually and moreflexibly than ever before allthis is encapsulated in Tune thelight. The interaction of controlhardware and software and theaddressable luminaires in theERCO Light System DALI opensup new dimensions for sceno-

    graphic design.

The possibilities for styling roomswith light are virtually endless. One of the most fascinatingproperties of light is its ability tocontinually reinterpret architec-ture. Staging and controlling suchtransformations with the inclusionof the time dimension is what werefer to as scenographic light.Networked lighting from ERCOprovide the basis for shaping howlight interacts with space, timeand atmosphere to form a coher-ent scenography more easily andeconomically than ever before.

The Light System DALI linksdigitally controllable luminairestogether to form lighting net-works networks that use indi-vidual addressing and groupingindependent of the structure ofthe electrical circuits. This resultsin a significant paradigm shiftin lighting design: instead ofhaving a specific, fixed lightingset-up, the new lighting technol-ogy creates the conditions formultiple lighting effects in multi-functional spaces.

beauty of beinge to control eachvidual lamp with

ht System DALI canseen, for instance, inse situations wherecenographic light-concept requiresnging patterns oncade.

It is especially whenlighting gardens orparks that a sceno-graphic approachmeans designing theinteraction betweenartificial light andenvironmental factorssuch as weather andnatural light.

The appearance of aroom is influencedas much by differentbrightness levels as itis by colour contrastsof the surfaces. Digit-ally controlled light-ing tools such as theQuadra LED varychromewallwasher allow thearchitecture to be con-tinually re-interpreted.

    Tune the LightLighting tools

e luminaire is a lighting tool, ece of lighting equipmenth a special practical purpose.s approach is reflected in theign of our products. ERCOsduct range for architectural

hting includes the three areaslighting control systems, oor luminaires and outdoor

minaires. Together, they ensuret holistic lighting concepts

    Tune the LightSystem design

ing system design to its logicalnclusion is a characteristic fea-e of ERCO products. We nevervelop products in isolation butways design whole product

ups that are clearly positionedhin the well-defined structurehe overall product range. Thisludes using versatile systemessories to adapt the lightingls to suit particular require-nts. The ability to interlinkitally controllable Light Clientsng the Light System DALI andincorporation of the Lightdio software as a user inter-e for complex luminaire func-ns is an equally important parthis concept.

Adjustable colourAs an integral part ofthe Light System DALIlighting control instal-lation, the ERCO LightStudio software providesoperational control thatallows light colours anddynamic progressions tobe adjusted from vary-chrome luminaires in themost convenient andsimplest possible way.

e design and construction of museumss developed into a showcase discipline forhitecture. Projects such as the Guggenheimseum in Bilbao alter the perception ofole regions and, as a result, also their eco-mic reality. The illumined glass pyramid ofLouvre has replaced the Eiffel Tower as a

mbol for Paris. Such structures are highlynificant for the designers, building ownersd visitors. The quality demanded of thehting is correspondingly high: extensiveections of material, in ideal conditions,

played in the best possible light. The light-equipment has to successfully satisfy the

en-contradictory demands of visitors andconservationists regarding the protection

he exhibits. New additions to collections,w media and new forms of presentation allke intensive use of scenographic strategiesd methods requiring appropriate, flexiblyntrollable lighting systems. Holistic lightingncepts which take outdoor conditions intoount will transform museum buildings into

cturnal symbols of their particular loca-ns. All these factors explain why museumality light is still seen as the ultimatenchmark for lighting designers.

Special lighting toolsare required for illu-minating vertical sur-faces absolutely evenly.Especially in the areaof wallwashers, ERCOoffers an unparalleledwide selection of differ-entiated lighting instru-ments: lens wallwashers,dual-focus wallwashers, washlights, and linearwallwashers to namea few.

Lighting applicationsApplication area: the retail sector

ese days designing retail areas predomi-ntly means designing an experience: theopping experience or the brand experience.

s is central to the customer s perception.fessional shop designers work scenographi-y in order to build themes into a coherentuence of events. One of their tools used inprocess is light as an intangible mediumt allows space to be continuously reinter-ted.Light performs a number of different func-ns in a shop. It attracts att ention, allows theods to be seen to their best advantage andps both orientation and wellbeing. In addi-n, light serves as a medium for expressingcontents and values of a brand so as tomote brand recognition. In this way its as a corporate light concept. Light cano be used to accentuate the atmosphereeasonal themes, such as the seasonally

anging collections in the fashion industry.

It is the quality of themerchandise in whichthe retailer takes pride.ERCO luminaires revealthem in the best light.

The abundance oflight in todays retailarchitecture would beunthinkable withouthigh-efficiency metalhalide lamps. ERCOoffers an extensiverange of lighting toolsfor these lamps toolswhich are ideally suitedto the particular require-ments of shop design.

Track-mounted spot-lights are the classicalsolution for displaylighting with stage-like effects, as usedin shop windows.

Special requirements apply to retail lighting. On the one hand light is used professionally, with a love of experimentation and with sceno-graphic concepts. On the other, stringent eco-nomical constraints are an ever-present real-ity. The intelligence and skill of the designerscombine with state-of-the-art lighting toolsto produce solutions satisfying the highestaesthetic and functional requirements, yetwith low operating costs. Flexible, variableand state of the art lighting systems are ideal

for the short cycles of the retail trade and yetprovide security for long-term investments.

viders of the highest quality lighting toolspend on the fact that their customers arel informed and appreciate quality. Expe-

ncing the qualities of light first-hand inntexts such as design seminars cannot belaced and has a long tradition at ERCOs does the practice of using various mediadisseminate knowledge about light andhitectural lighting. The Handbook of Light-design published by ERCO Edition is stilln as the definitive reference work. Today,Internet offers optimum possibilities for

ectly imparting current knowledge to allerested parties. The Guide area of the ERCO Light Scout pro-es extensive information on topics ranging

m the physical basics of lighting throughpossible solutions for specific lighting situa-ns in short, a veritable encyclopaedia ofhitectural lighting. The Guides knowledge-ed modules utilise the Internets interac-

e capabilities in order to clearly illustrateious aspects such as time-related phenom-

on, experiments or comparisons betweenernative solutions.

The construction andlighting effect is evenexplained for specialluminaire designssuch as double-focusdownlights.

The subject of sceno-graphic light can beexcellently conveyedusing multimedia repre-sentations that allow

If offline-work with theGuide is necessary, CD-ROMs from ERCO areavailable on request.

    interactive continuousadjustability.

The topics handled bythe Guide also includethe fundamentals oflighting technology, such as the spectralproperties of certain

lamp types. The Guidetakes a unbiased, didactic approach.

The basic principle ofthe Guide: nothingexplains technical factsbetter than the repro-duction of experiments.

Graphic illustrationsare particularly suitedto interactively explain-ing qualities of lightsuch as how the shapeof a three-dimensionalbody can be formedby directed light.

The Guide covers bothindoor and outdoorlighting applicationscomprehensively.

With its interactive contents the Guide is tailormade for the digital medium of the Internet. The range of knowledge-based modules in the

ERCO Light Scout is continually being updatedand expanded. CD-ROM versions derived fromthe Guide contents at www.erco.com are regu-larly produced and can also run offline with-out an active Internet connection. The GuideCDs which are also suitable as teaching aidsin higher education can be obtained viayour ERCO contact on request. Furthermore, the contents of the Guide are also available inprintable form as PDF files from the Downloadarea of the ERCO Light Scout.

i-drop technologyWhether from CD-ROMor directly from theInternet as online plug-ins with i-drop capa-bility, ERCO design dataseamlessly integratesinto the digital designprocesses with DIALux.

ative lighting designs begin in the mind.e journey from concept to reality takese and has to be convincing. In this regard,

plementing architectural design is largelymatter of communication.Since spatial perception in humans is pri-rily visual, computer-generated visualisa-ns have gained a permanent place in thecess of architectural design. However, just real architecture, virtual architecture alsoy comes to life with light. Thats why everyCO luminaire has a virtual twin in the formdigital luminaire data, which can be down-ded from the ERCO Light Scout website.an then be inserted directly into lightingulation and visualisation software to cre-

physically accurate studies, visualisationsd analyses all in photographic quality. It isecially in the field of vertical illuminancet lighting simulation proves itself to be auable tool for convincingly demonstratingeffect of wallwashers and avoiding design

ors.And yet the virtual luminaires are juste part of the extensive information andcumentation available online in the Lightout. In addition, there are also images, sym-s, specification details, data sheets, photo-tric data and much more all aimed aturing that up-to-date information can

accessed anywhere and at any stage ofdesign process.

The following detailed information is avail-e for downloading from the Light Scoutevery ERCO lighting tool (sometimes com-ssed as a .zip file): product specificationets (.pdf), article texts (.txt), product imagesg), photometric data in IES and Eulumdatmats, 3D models for 3D-CAD (.dxf), i-drop-mpatible data for DIALux (.uld) and lumi-re files for Autodesk VIZ, Autodesk VIZ 4
