2012-13 Season PreviewThe High Point University women’s basketball team will

look to build on last year’s impressive 20-win campaign in 2012-13 under the guidance of first-year head coach DeUnna Hendrix. Hendrix returns 10 players, including three starters, who helped the team to the Big South title game and the first round of the Women’s National Invitational Tournament.

Hendrix steps in as the head coach this season after serv-ing as an assistant coach on last year’s 20-win team. Hendrix was also an assistant coach at Jacksonville University for four seasons after she completed her playing career at Richmond. At Richmond, Hendrix played for Joanne Boyle, who is now the head coach at Virginia.

A trio of starters return for the Panthers this season in-cluding two Preseason All-Conference honorees: senior Erin Reynolds and junior Cheyenne Parker. Reynolds started every game for High Point last year and set the HPU single season steals record with 88 take-aways. Parker was the 2011-12 Big South Defensive Player of the Year. She set the Big South sin-gle-season record for rebounds (403) and blocked shots (121). Junior Tayler Tremblay returns for her junior season after the starting 31 games last year.

Hendrix will have no problem filling the final two starting positions as the Panthers have added depth at every position for this season. High Point graduated just one player, All-Big South forward Shamia Brown, but added four new players to the roster. Redshirt-sophomore Stacia Robertson is also able to play this season after she transferred from South Dakota and was forced to sit out last year.

“Last year we got a taste of success,” Hendrix said. “We have a better understanding of what it takes to be a championship team. We have come into this season with more hunger and determination than ever. We will still be an up-tempo team that dictates on both ends of the floor but this year we will also pay more attention to detail. We need to do the little things better

to win a championship.” Hendrix put together a challenging

schedule for High Point in 2012-13. Fans will get their first look at the team on Nov. 4 when the team hosts Winston-Salem State in an exhibition game at the Millis Center. The season opener is a home game against East Tennessee State on Nov. 10. High Point also welcomes Bluefield Col-lege and Alabama-Birmingham to the Millis Center in non-conference action.

High Point will hit the road for non-conference games at Furman, Ken-tucky, Xavier, Davidson and Mercer. HPU opens Big South play at Winthrop on Dec. 18 and home league play begins on Jan. 3 against Charleston Southern.

The Big South Tournament features a combined men’s and women’s tournament with all games hosted by Coastal Caroli-na at its new arena, the HTC Center in Conway, S.C., March 5-10. The women’s first round games will be played March 6. The quarterfinal games will be played on March 8, the semifinals on March 9 and the championship game on March 10.

BACK COURTHigh Point’s back court will feature two familiar faces in

2012-13, Erin Reynolds and Tayler Tremblay. Reynolds will continue as the team’s primary point guard, a role she flourished in last season. Reynolds averaged 15.9 points per game and 4.3 assists per game and earned a spot on the All-Big South second team and the All-Tournament team. She also made her mark as a tenacious defender, setting the HPU single-season record for steals with 88. Reynolds needs just seven points to reach the 1,000-point mark for her career.

“Erin had a breakout season last year,” Hendrix said. “We expect a lot from her. She is our voice on the floor, sets the tempo on both ends of the court and can impact the game in so many ways. She is one of the quickest players in the league and can score in a variety of ways.”

Tremblay played alongside Reynolds in every game last season, averaging 7.8 points per game while dishing out 3.8 assists per game. The five-foot, three-inch guard also made her presence known on the defensive end with 40 steals.

“Tayler Tremblay is someone that has to be on the floor because she knows how to compete. When you put her on the floor beside a dynamic player like Erin it is easy to understand how she goes unrecognized but she has all the intangibles you want in a basketball player.”

Five players will compete for the third starting spot in the back court while also providing depth the team lacked last year. Redshirt-sophomore Lindsay Puckett and sophomores Lexi Patterson and Ashante Richard are battling for court time this season. They will contend with newcomers Kendra Wallace and Tori Cook.

Puckett was a key player off the bench for last year’s squad. She appeared in 29 games and averaged 5.8 point and 2.3 rebounds per game.

“Lindsay continues to show a lot of improvement from last year,” Hendrix said. “She isn’t just a catch and shoot player anymore. She gives us size at the wing and can rebound. She makes everyone on the court better.”

Patterson averaged just over six minutes a game as a fresh-man. She is an athletic guard with good instincts who can come

in to play the point guard or shooting guard position. “She brings athleticism to the floor. She is still a raw player

but has improved in the last year,” Hendrix said. Richard also saw limited time in her rookie season, appear-

ing in 13 games with two starts. Most of her 11.5 minutes per game came as a defensive stopper for the Panthers.

“Ashante is a player who needed her freshman year to get acclimated to the college game,” Hendrix said. “Now she is capable of pushing Erin and Tayler for playing time, especially as a defensive stopper.”

The team has two newcomers to the back court, Wallace and Cook, with varied levels of experience. Wallace comes to HPU as a graduate student with one year of eligibility after completing her undergraduate degree at USC Upstate. In her final season with the Spartans she averaged eight points per game. Wallace played under current HPU assistant coach Kevin Nicholls while at USC Upstate.

“Kendra not only brings experience and leadership to the team but is also a knock-down shooter.” Hendrix said. “We can do so much with her on the floor. Opposing teams will have to extend their defenses to guard her and it will open up a lot of options for us.”

Cook is a freshman from Clemmons, N.C. She was a four-time All-Conference honoree and the South Crescent Confer-ence Player of the Year in 2011 at West Forsyth High School.

“Tori is the definition of toughness. She exemplifies the type of culture we want to have in this program with her deter-mination and mental toughness. She is a really solid, consistent basketball player.

“The guards are going to compete against each other every day to prove who deserves to be on the floor. They are all so different that we will be able to switch up schemes and put the best team on the court every night. We have a ton of talent and depth at all three positions.”

FRONT COURTThe Panthers return the Big South Defensive Player of the

Year to lead the front court in 2012-13. Cheyenne Parker set the Big South single-season record for rebounds (403) and blocked

shots (121) as a sophomore. She needs 100 rebounds to pass Brown as HPU’s Div. I career leader in the category.

“It seems strange to say that someone is poised to have a breakout season when they averaged 13 points and 12 rebounds and was named the Defensive Player of the Year last season but I think that is the case with Cheyenne,” Hendrix said. “She still hasn’t realized her full potential but has worked harder than ever this year to unlock it.”

There are five players competing for the starting spot left by the graduation of Shamia Brown. Brown finished her HPU career as the Panthers’ Div. I leader in both scoring (1,590 points) and rebounds (745). She is just the third player in the school’s Div. I era to eclipse both 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.

Redshirt-sophomore Stacia Robertson is eager to get on the floor after sitting last year due to NCAA transfer rules. Robertson played her freshman season at South Dakota where she averaged 7.9 points and 4.7 rebounds in 19.4 minutes per game and was an honorable mention All-Great West Conference selection.

“Stacia is a fundamentally sound, tough player,” Hendrix said. “She has the ability to score, adding versatility to our offense and will make an impact on the defensive end.”

Senior Jazmin Cromartie has been a key bench player in her first three seasons, coming in to add size and rebounding on the defensive end. Cromartie averaged 1.7 rebounds and 1.6 points per game for her career.

“More than anyone else on the team, Jazmin has improved in every single workout. She realizes this is her final season and it has motivated her to become a more vocal leader,” Hendrix said.

Kamille Lisonbee is also a senior who adds depth to the bench. At 6-feet, 7-inches, Lisonbee is the tallest member of the team and immediately provides a rebounding presence for High Point.

“Kamille is a senior who knows what is expected of her,” Hendrix said. “She adds size and presence which will help us on the defensive end.”

Two freshman, Tabitha Fudge and Jatzmin Johnson, join the front cout group. Fudge hails from Miller Grove, Ga. where she helped Miller Grove High School to a state champion-ship as a senior. Johnson is a local product, joining HPU from Thomasville Prep in Concord, N.C. She scored 1,000 points in her high school career and was a three-time All-Conference honoree.

“Both of the freshman are very talented and will be a vital part of the team,” Hendrix said. “They will practice every day against one of the best forwards in the league, Cheyenne Parker, and they will learn so much from her. Cheyenne gained so much from working with Shamia for two years and now she gets to step in to the leadership role with Tabitha and Jatzmin.

“This team has a great attitude and positive outlook. They have been through a lot together and it has united them. Our biggest asset this season will be our team chemistry and the trust the players have in each other and in us as a coaching staff. With talent, trust and chemistry I am excited to see what this team can do.” Tayler Tremblay

DeUnna HendrixHead Coach • Alma Mater: Richmond ’07 • First season at HPU: 2012-13

DeUnna Hendrix was named the ninth head coach of the High Point University women’s basketball team in May 2012. Hen-drix was promoted to the head job after a year as an assistant coach at HPU, when she helped lead the Panthers to a 20-13 record and their second Women’s NIT appearance.

Hendrix played a large role in the suc-cessful 2011-12 season. High Point had its second 20-win season since moving up to NCAA Div. I in 1999-2000. The Panthers’ 13 Big South wins were most in team his-tory and HPU made it to the Big South tournament final for the third time. The team won a program-record nine games in a row in January.

Hendrix will instill an up-tempo style of play with the ability to dictate on both the offensive and defensive end. The Panthers have several key players returning, includ-ing senior point guard Erin Reynolds and junior forward Cheyenne Parker who both earned All-Big South second-team honors last season. Under Hendrix’s guidance, all of HPU’s guards improved with Reynolds averaging 15.9 points and 4.3 assists in 2011-12. Parker was named Big South De-fensive Player of the Year and ranked fourth in the nation in both rebounds (12.2) and blocks (3.7) per game.

HPU returns six of its top seven scorers from last season and added four newcomers: three-star recruit Tabitha Fudge from the

Atlanta area and Tori Cook and Jatzmin Johnson of North Carolina. Kendra Wallace will join the team as a graduate student. She graduated from USC Upstate and received a graduate transfer waiver from the NCAA in order to become immediately eligible for her final season of college eligibility at HPU. High Point also gains the services of sopho-more forward Stacia Robertson, who sat out last season after transferring to HPU.

Hendrix joined High Point University last season after four years as a coach at Jacksonville University with head coach Jill Dunn. The Dolphins advanced to the Atlantic Sun championship game in three out of her four seasons, including 2011. The team went 23-9 in 2007-08, the best overall record in program history. Hendrix was instrumental in helping Regina Omoite finish her career as one of the top floor leaders in the history of the program, set-ting records for assists in a career (459) and season (154).

Prior to Jacksonville, Hendrix played at the University of Richmond under Joanne Boyle, who is now head coach at the Univer-sity of Virginia. Hendrix was team captain and helped the Spiders to an NCAA Tour-nament appearance as well as the Women’s NIT semifinals. The team posted two 23-win seasons. Hendrix earned her bachelor’s degree in rhetoric and communications.

Hendrix went on to play professionally

for the Jacksonville Cougars of the Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League in the summer of 2008. It was the league’s inaugural season and Hendrix was elected team captain.

Originally from Kokomo, Ind., Hendrix was a three-sport athlete during her prep career at Kokomo High School. She was a first-team All-State selection as a senior, lead-ing her team to an undefeated season, a state championship and a No. 14 national rank-ing. She currently resides in High Point.
