2013-14 Season PreviewThe High Point University women’s basketball team

embarks on its second season under head coach DeUnna Hendrix in 2013-14. The Panthers had an impressive 17-win campaign in Hendrix’s first season and look to build on that this season with a more well-rounded roster. High Point will have a young squad, with just one true senior, Tayler Tremblay, among the seven returning players and five newcomers, including four freshmen.

A trio of starters return for the Panthers led by Trem-blay and redshirt-juniors Stacia Robertson and Lindsay Puckett. Each one averaged over 28 minutes per game while combining to account for almost half of HPU’s team scoring. Robertson was named to the All-Big South Preseason Team after quietly averaging 12 points and 6.9 rebounds last year. Her 2012-13 rebounds, blocks and steals totals rank in the top 10 in the HPU record book.

Hendrix is asking Tremblay, Robertson and Puck-ett to lead HPU’s four other returning players and five newcomers this season. Junior guards Lexi Patterson and Ashante Richard and sophomore forwards Tabitha Fudge and Jatzmin Johnson are back with another year of con-ditioning and experience to build the High Point bench. Hendrix added three freshmen guards to the roster to help in HPU’s weakest area from last season, perimeter scoring.

“We have great leadership in the program,” Hendrix said. “Our upperclassmen are tremendous role models who have grown up in the program and know what is expected of them. We have added in exciting new players who come from winning programs. Every member of the team has really taken to the identity that we want to be the hardest working team in the Big South.”

HPU went 17-13 in Hendrix’s first season, including an 11-7 record in Big South Conference games. High Point got off to a hot start in league play, opening with a

4-1 record but faltered at the end of the season when the team was depleted by injuries.

High Point hosted just three non-conference home games last sea-son and while this year’s schedule will be equally challenging it will give High Point fans a few more chances to see the Panthers at the Millis Center. The season begins on Nov. 9 with a home game against Newberry College. HPU will also host USC Upstate, Davidson and Furman before Big South play begins. The Panthers will have tough road games at Virginia, William & Mary and North Carolina.

For the second year, the Big South Tournament is combined with both men’s and women’s tourneys at Coastal Carolina’s HTC Center. The

FRONT COURTRedshirt-junior Stacia Robertson will lead HPU’s

front court this season. Robertson was voted to the All-Big South Preseason Team after averaging 12 points and 6.9 rebounds last season. She had 201 rebounds, 69 steals and 58 blocks in her first season for the Panthers, all of which rank in the top 10 single seasons at High Point.

“Last year we asked Stacia to step out and do some things at the perimeter that pulled her out of her natural position,” Hendrix said. “This year we have some other people more naturally suited for that and moving Stacia back inside will help her have an even better year. She was our unsung hero every game last season and I look forward to seeing her take on more leadership and more of the spotlight this year.”

Also returning to the front court are a pair of soph-omores, Tabitha Fudge and Jatzmin Johnson. Fudge will miss the 2013-14 season due to injury. She played in 29 games as freshman, averaging 1.4 points and 1.7 rebounds in seven minutes per game. Johnson saw action in just 14 games and grabbed 14 rebounds.

“Jatzmin is a better-conditioned athlete this year,” Hendrix said. “She has always had a great touch around the basket but she is in much better shape this year which will allow her to make more of an impact in the game.”

Joining the HPU post players are junior Latrice Phelps and freshman DeAnneisha Jackson. Phelps comes to High Point from Louisburg College where she helped the team win the 2013 NJCAA National Championship. She posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 re-bounds in the title game.

“High Point fans will see a lot of similarities between Latrice Phelps and Shamia Brown,” Hendrix said. “They Stacia Robertson

have very similar styles of play and they both have very high energy levels. Latrice is extremely energetic and plays as hard as she can at all times. She is also very skilled in that she can step out and play at the perimeter. She will create a lot of match up problems, especially in the Big South.”

Jackson is originally from Angier, N.C. where she was an All-State and Conference MVP selection at Harnett Central. Jackson was also named the MVP of the North Carolina Coaches East-West All-Star Game. The six-foot, two-inch freshman will immediately add depth to High Point’s front court.

“DeAnneisha gets better every day at practice,” Hen-drix said. “She comes in all the time for extra work and listens to everything she is told. The result is that she is much further along than freshmen usually are and ready for the college game.”

BACK COURTHigh Point’s back court will rely on a mixture of re-

turning players and newcomers in 2013-14. The Panthers return senior Tayler Tremblay, redshirt-junior Lindsay Puckett and sophomores Lexi Patterson and Ashante Richard, who all logged a lot of minutes last year. HPU also added a freshman point guard and a pair of freshmen who will immediately add to the team’s perimeter scoring.

Tremblay ran the point for most of last season, dish-ing out four assists per game which ranks sixth in the HPU record book. Tremblay’s .767 career free-throw percentage is also second all-time at High Point.

“Tayler has been our point guard. She knows how to run that spot and she knows what we expect from her,” said head coach DeUnna Hendrix. “It is always good to have experience at the point but Tayler is also comfortable playing anywhere on the floor.”

Also vying for time at the point is junior Ashante

Richard and freshman Kaylah Keys. Richard was one of three Panthers to appear in all 30 games last season, picking up 38 assists, 22 points and 15 rebounds.

“Ashante made a great decision to stay here over the summer and put a lot of work in to basketball,” Hendrix said. “She has improved greatly, especially when you look all the way back to her freshman season. She can step in to run the point if we need her and go in and help us defensively.”

Keys finished her career at Harding Academy as the program’s all-time scorer for both men and women with 2,538 points. She was also the three-time District Player of the Year and the State Tournament MVP in 2010.

“Kaylah comes from a winning program,” Hendrix said. “She is learning a lot from Tayler in practice. Kaylah will definitely step in to the point guard role at times but it is great that she can also score when she is on the floor.”

Redshirt-junior Lindsay Puckett is back on the wing this season. She averaged 8.5 points and 4.1 rebounds last season while contributing 52 steals and 49 assists. Puckett was often HPU’s emotional leader last year, especially on the defensive end of the floor.

“She just keeps getting better,” Hendrix said. “I never thought I would say this but she is our most improved player from last year. She was really solid for us last year, especially defensively but she put in so a lot of hours in the gym this season to keep getting better.”

Junior Lexi Patterson came on strong at the end of last season when she was inserted in the starting lineup. She averaged 5.1 points and 2.0 rebounds per game for the year, increasing those averaged to 8.0 point and 2.5 rebounds in the last 11 games of the season.

“She will give us valuable minutes this year, just like she did last year,” Hendrix said. “Her ability to come in and get defensive stops is incredibly underrated.”

Joining the guards are freshmen Teddy Vincent and Maja Michalska. Vincent comes to HPU from Martin, Tenn., where she was an All-District and All-Region honoree at Westview High School. Michalska is from Piastow, Po-land where she helped her team to top-ten finishes in the Polish Championships for the last five years.

“Teddy is one of the hardest workers I have ever coached,” Hendrix said. “Her range is unlimited and she really can score from anywhere on the floor.

“Maja is a talented basketball player, but more importantly she has come in and been a great teammate. She can slash and shoot and has a great pull-up jumper. But we really love that she has come in and found a spot on this team right away.”

DeUnna HendrixHead Coach • Alma Mater: Richmond ’07 • First season at HPU: 2012-13

In her first season at the helm of the High Point University women’s basketball team, DeUnna Hendrix led the Panthers to 17 regular-season wins and a fourth-place finish in the Big South Conference.

Hendrix was named the ninth head coach of the HPU women’s basketball team in May 2012. She was promoted to the head job after a year as an assistant coach at HPU, when she helped lead the Panthers to a 20-13 record and their second Women’s NIT appearance.

Hendrix instilled an up-tempo style of play with the ability to dictate on both the offensive and defensive end. In Hendrix’s first season, HPU went 17-12 in the regular season with an 11-7 mark in Big South play. The Panthers played a challenging schedule with 16 of their 29 games on the road. HPU went 8-8 away from the Millis Center with five wins coming in league play. Hendrix led the Panthers to a 71-63 win at Liberty on Jan. 17. High Point became the first Big South team to defeat Liberty at the Vines Center in back-to-back years since UNC Greensboro posted four straight wins at the Vines Center between 1993-94 and 1996-97.

Under Hendrix’s guidance junior Chey-enne Parker won her second Big South De-fensive Player of the Year honor in 2012-13. Parker led the NCAA with 4.5 blocks per game and set HPU single season records in points per game (17.9) rebounds per game (13.2) and blocks (130).

As an assistant, Hendrix played a large role in the successful 2011-12 season. High Point had its second 20-win season since moving up to NCAA Div. I in 1999-2000. The Panthers’ 13 Big South wins were most in team history and HPU made it to the Big South tournament final for the third time. The team won a program-record nine games in a row in January.

Hendrix joined High Point Univer-sity in 2011 after four years as a coach at Jacksonville University with head coach Jill Dunn. The Dolphins advanced to the Atlantic Sun championship game in three out of her four seasons, including 2011. The team went 23-9 in 2007-08, the best overall record in program history. Hendrix was in-strumental in helping Regina Omoite finish her career as one of the top floor leaders in the history of the program, setting records for assists in a career (459) and season (154).

Prior to Jacksonville, Hendrix played at the University of Richmond under Joanne Boyle, who is now head coach at the Univer-sity of Virginia. Hendrix was team captain and helped the Spiders to an NCAA Tour-nament appearance as well as the Women’s NIT semifinals. The team posted two 23-win seasons. Hendrix earned her bachelor’s degree in rhetoric and communications.

Hendrix went on to play professionally for the Jacksonville Cougars of the Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League in the summer of 2008. It was the league’s inaugural season and Hendrix was elected team captain.

Originally from Kokomo, Ind., Hendrix was a three-sport athlete during her prep career at Kokomo High School. She was a first-team All-State selection as a senior, leading her team to an undefeated season, a state championship and a No. 14 national ranking. She currently resides in Greensboro.
