ryerson upsets deFendinG Wilson cup chaMps 86-70The Ryerson Rams stunned the defending OUA-champion Lakehead Thunderwolves with an 86-70 victory in the first semifinal of the OUA Wilson Cup Final Four Men’s Basketball tournament, hosted by the University of Waterloo. Porter Player of the Game and 2012 OUA East All-Rookie Team member Aaron Best, of Scarborough, Ontario, dominated Ryerson’s offensive production with 26 points, which included a trio of three-pointers. For the Thunderwolves, OUA West 2012 Player of the Year Venzal Russell, of Detroit, Mich., again proved the driving force for Lakehead, leading the team with both 23 points--including 14 points in the second quarter—and 12 rebounds. With the win, the Rams advance to the OUA final against the Carleton Ravens.

carleton advances to siXth consecutive Wilson cup FinalThe defending CIS-champion Carleton Ravens advanced to their sixth consecutive Wilson Cup final with an 80-56 win over the McMaster Marauders in the second semifinal of the OUA Men’s Basketball Final Four tournament. Taking an early 9-0 lead over the Marauders, the Ravens held a consistent margin of about ten points throughout the first three quarters of play, before pulling away in the final frame of the OUA semifinal playoff, sponsored by Investors Group. Porter Player of the Game and the 2012 OUA East Player of the Year, Philip Scrubb of Richmond, B.C., tallied 26 points for the Ravens, connecting on eight of 15 field goal attempts, which included three three-pointers. In the losing effort for McMaster, Jordan Tews and 2012 OUA West first-team all-star Victor Raso led the team with 10 points apiece, and Taylor Black tallied a team-leading 10 rebounds. Carleton advances to face the Ryerson Rams in the Wilson Cup championship game, Saturday, March 3 at 8 p.m.

carleton reclaiMs Wilson cup With 82-39 thrashinG oF ryersonThe Carleton Ravens are the OUA men’s basketball champions for the seventh time in 10 years, decimating the Ryerson Rams 82-39 in the Wilson Cup final tonight at the OUA Final Four tournament, hosted by the University of Waterloo and presented by Recharge with Milk. Fifth-year Raven guard Cole Hobin, of Ashton, Ont., earned the Kitch MacPherson Trophy, adding to his OUA East Defensive Player of the Year award captured earlier this week. Hobin posted a team-high 17 points, sinking a trio of three-pointers, and added 11 rebounds. Carleton has now won four of the past five Wilson Cup titles, having been defeated last season in the title game by Lakehead. Ryerson was making the second trip to the championship game in club history, having previously lost in the 1999 final. Jahmal Jones, of Mississauga, Ontario, was the lone Ram in double-digit scoring, amassing 11 points and scoring Ryerson’s lone three-pointer. The 43-point marked the most lop-sided Wilson Cup final since the championship game became a regular fixture in 1966, surpassing the previous mark of 40 points set when Ottawa defeated Western 88-48 in 1993. Ryerson’s performance was also the lowest point total of a Wilson Cup participant since 1966, breaking a mark previously held by Carleton in a 77-41 defeat to Western in the 1988 final. Both teams advance to the CIS Final 8 in Halifax, N.S., hosted by Atlantic University Sport from March 9 to 11.

cis Final 8: carleton repeats, claiMs record-tyinG eiGhth national titleThe top-seeded Carleton University Ravens claimed a record-tying eighth W.P. McGee Trophy with a dominating 86-67 win over the No. 2 Alberta Golden Bears in the gold medal final of the 50th CIS men’s basketball championship. The OUA champion Ravens, who beat No. 8 Acadia 82-68 in Friday’s opening round and defeated No. 5 Fraser Valley 83-65 in Saturday’s semifinals, conclude the season with an unblemished 34-0 overall record against CIS competition. The Ravens finished with a significant advantage in every statistical category. They out-rebounded their rivals 38-29, dominated 44-20 in points in the paint, shot 57.4 per cent from the field, compared to 34.4 for Alberta, and scored on 40.9 percent of their three-point attempts, compared to 25.0 for the Bears. Phil Scrubb, who was announced as the CIS player of the year on Thursday, completed a dream week when he received the Jack Donohue Trophy as the tournament MVP. The sophomore guard from Richmond, B.C., led the Ravens in scoring for the third straight day with a 26-point output in the title match. He had netted 25 in the first round and 18 in the semis. It was the second straight national title for the Ravens, who have captured their eight banners in a span of only 10 years. The powerhouse from Ottawa has now won each of the last seven CIS tournaments contested in Halifax since 2003 and is riding a 23-game winning streak at the Metro Centre dating back to a 78-77 quarter-final loss to McMaster in 2001.

Bess Lennox was force on defence, amassing 14 rebounds by the end of the third quarter. Lennox would go on to pick up a total of 23 rebounds, seven points, earning her Player of the Game honours. Samantha de Jong led the way for the Badgers, netting 15 points and picking up seven rebounds. With the win, the Gee-Gees now advance to the OUA Championship game tomorrow at 8 p.m. at Montpetit Hall, and will face the Windsor Lancers.

lancers to Meet Gee-Gees in oua Gold Medal GaMeFor the third time in four years, the Windsor Lancers will be meeting the uOttawa Gee-Gees in the OUA Gold medal game, after Windsor defeated the Carleton Ravens 76-56 Friday evening in the second semifinal match-up of the OUA Final Four weekend. Third-year forward and OUA West Player of the Year Jessica Clemencon (St. Rambert, FR) was yet again a dominant force for the Lancers in their win, picking up a game-high 32 points and 10 rebounds. She was named OUA Player of the Game. Carleton’s fourth-year guard Alyson Bush (Ottawa, Ont.) led the Ravens with 20 points and three rebounds. The Lancers will now face the Gee-Gees tomorrow evening in the OUA gold medal game at 8 p.m. at Montpetit Hall.

Gee-Gees doMinate rival Windsor, Win oua chaMpionshipFor the third time in four years, uOttawa and Windsor’s women’s basketball teams met in the OUA championship game. In the 2009 championship game, Windsor won 68-51, while in 2010; the Gee-Gees were soundly defeated on home court, 83-55. On March 3, it was time for the Gee-Gees to return the favour, as Ottawa won their first OUA women’s basketball title since the 2003–04 season, soundly beating the Lancers 89-40. The Gee-Gees demonstrated balanced scoring, as Jenna Gilbert, Kellie Ring, Bess Lennox and Teddi Firmi-Kuehn all had point totals in the double-digits. Jessica Clemencon was the lone Lancer to breach the double digit mark, scoring 11 points in the contest. Windsor, the defending CIS champions, will have one last chance to qualify for the CIS Final 8, via the CIS regionals.

lancers repeat as BronZe BaBy chaMpionsThe fourth-seeded Windsor Lancers captured a second straight Bronze Baby Trophy as CIS women’s basketball champions on Monday night thanks to a 69-53 gold medal win over the No. 2 UBC Thunderbirds at the University of Calgary’s Jack Simpson Gymnasium. After rebounding from a 49-point thumping by the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the OUA final, the Lancers successfully defended their 2011 title by defeating AUS champion Acadia in the quarter-final, host Calgary in the semi, and the Canada West winner Thunderbirds to take the Bronze Baby back to Windsor. For the second straight season, third-year guard Miah-Marie Langlois, who was named the CIS defensive player of the year, earned the title of CIS championship MVP. In the final, Langlois had 17 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, all game highs. Jessica Clemençon, a first-team all-Canadian forward from France and last year’s CIS most outstanding player, chipped in with 16 points and five boards and was chosen MVP of the championship game for Windsor for the second year in a row.

tie BreaKinG procedures:1. Most league wins (if the teams have played the same number of games).2. Record in head-to-head competition (if all teams involved in the tie have played each other at least once).3. Point difference in head-to-head competition (if all teams involved in the tie have played each other at least once).4. Record in games within the division.5. Record in games against common opponents.6. Record in games against each of the other teams in the division, starting at the top of the standing and continuing in descending order.7. Point difference in games within the division.8. Point difference in games against common opponents.9. Point difference in games against the highest divisional opponent not involved in the tie.10. Point difference in games against the second-highest divisional opponent not involved in the tie.11. If the tie persists, repeat Step 10 using the other teams in the division in descending order until the tie is broken.12. Total point difference.13. Coin toss (if two teams are tied) or drawing of lots (if more than two teams are tied).

deFinitions:1. Record is determined by calculating the winning percentage as follows: • If there are no ties (Basketball): Wins/Games Played

2. For the purpose of this rule, “division” is defined as the basis on which playoff positions are determined. If playoff positions are determined on a league-wide basis, then the league is to be considered one “division” for the purposes of the rule, regardless of the number of divisions that may exist for scheduling or other purposes.

3. Point difference is calculated by taking the number of points (goals, runs, etc.) score by a team, and subtracting the number of points (goals, runs, etc.) allowed by a team. When point difference is to break a tie between teams who have played an unequal number of games against each other, the difference is NOT weighted to compensate for the number of games played. Any weighting would magnify the differences apparent in the number of games played.

note: When the above system separates one or more teams from the other, those teams shall be ranked accordingly and any remaining ties shall be broken by reverting to Step 1 of the appropriate system.
