Girl Scouts is the preeminent leadership development organization for girls with 3.2 million girland adult members worldwide. As one of 112 Girl Scout councils chartered by Girl Scouts of theUSA, Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines serves nearly 29,000 girl members and almost10,000 adult members in 41 central and eastern North Carolina counties.

With administrative headquarters in Raleigh, regional service centers inFayetteville and Goldsboro, four camp properties, and countless communitypartners, our capacity to serve girls and provide relevant and engagingprogramming continues to grow.

Our Counties

When a girl says, "I can't wait to," you knowthat what's coming next is something she isexcited about. Whether she's talking abouttomorrow's field trip or the big game nextSaturday, that wide-eyed anticipation is oneof the best parts of childhood.

So how can we play a part in inspiring that feeling? What role can we play? At Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines,our goal is to instill confidence, leadershipskills, and a collaborative spirit in girls. Butthe key to instilling those qualities andteaching them life lessons is being able toimpart fun, imagination, and joy intoeverything we do.

As I look back on the past year, I see the fun, I see theimagination and I feel the joy in what we’ve done together.This past year, we moved into a new service center inFayetteville that includes program and retail space. We had a successful Cookie Sale, met our fund development goalsand positioned the council to continue to be financiallystrong for the future. We also completed the StrategicLearning process and identified areas which will not only

enhance the Girl Scout experience for our girls but make us stronger. In thecoming year, we will kick off and pilot several initiatives that came out ofStrategic Learning and which we believe will make a difference for our girlsand volunteers in all 41 of our counties.

Girl Scouting helps girls become leaders in their dailylives and in the world. Our national leadershipcurriculum helps girls experience the three keys toleadership – Discovering Self, Connecting withOthers, and Taking Action.

Girls are provided opportunities to go tonew places, meet new friends, andengage in quality programming to helpexplore various fields and career paths.Girl Scouting expands girls’ horizons andhelps them imagine all kinds of newpossibilities for their futures.

During 2012-2013, our council served28,835 girls in troops and groupsthroughout our council region. With thesupport of 9,748 adult volunteers, girlswere encouraged to learn, guided in theirdevelopment as leaders, and inspired tocontinue growing through Girl Scouts.

Girl programming focuses on topics that enhancethe Girl Scout Leadership Experience includingJourneys, healthy living, STEM (Science, Technology,Engineering and Math), financial literacy, self-esteem, environmental stewardship, leadership andcitizenship.

...CONNECT

Girl Scouts has a rich history of inclusion and has beencommitted to making the organization accessible to allgirls since its start. By removing barriers throughcommunity outreach and providing financial assistance tomeet girls’ needs, 11,555 girls were able to experience thebenefits of Girl Scouting who could not otherwiseparticipate.

Girls were served in after-school programs, atpublic housing facilities, and through partnershipswith other agencies including local Boys & GirlsClubs, community centers and schools.

With the support of Golden Corral Corporation,60 girls from low income communities had theopportunity to have a traditional troop experience.Some of their experiences throughout the yearincluded spending a week at Camp Graham,completing the be a friend first program,participating in Teen Camporee, and challengingthemselves at a rock climbing event.

Through a continued partnership with the NationalInclusion Project, our council launched the InclusionChallenge in honor of Different Shoe Day and WorldThinking Day in February. Through their work on the Circleof Friends Patch Program, over 400 girls and adults tookthe challenge to live a day in someone else’s shoes.

...TAKE ACTION

The Girl Scout Gold Award represents the highest and most prestigious achievement in Girl Scouting and provides the opportunity for girls to take action and create a lasting changein their communities. Each year, girls Go Gold by demonstrating extraordinary leadershipthrough remarkable Take Action projects which have a sustainable impact in theircommunities and beyond.

During 2012-2013, 60 Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadorsearned the Girl Scout Gold Award, 275 Girl Scout Cadettesearned the Girl Scout Silver Award, and 759 Girl ScoutJuniors earned the Girl Scout Bronze Award.

In partnership with the Kappa Delta Sorority chapter at North Carolina State University, 217 girls and 113 adults andvolunteers joined together to learn more about Girl Scouting’shighest awards at the All That Glitters event. Dr. JenniferLatino, director of the First Year Experience at CampbellUniversity, shared her Girl Scout experience and how earningleadership awards helps girls achieve in education, in theworkplace and throughout their lifetime.

Awarded to fewer than six percent of Girl Scouts annually, each Gold Awardee spends over 80 hours on her project. Congratulations to all of Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines’Girl Scout award recipients for achieving their goals and this distinguished honor–all whileserving their communities.

2012-2013 Girl Scout Gold Award Recipients

...REACH MY GOAL

When a girl sells cookies, she is building a lifetime of skills and confidence. The Girl ScoutCookie Program builds 5 essential life skills: goal setting, decision making, moneymanagement, people skills and business ethics. The Girl Scout Cookie Program is the largestgirl-led business in the world, generating nearly $800 million in annual sales. And these aren’tjust cookies – they’re opportunities. With their Girl Scout Cookie Program earnings, girls fundimportant community projects at the local level.

All proceeds from the cookie sale remain in the council and are used to benefit girls – bothdirectly in troop treasuries and indirectly by subsidizing the cost of providing Girl Scoutingthroughout our 41 counties.

For the ninth year, Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines’ Cookie Program supportedmilitary troops with cookies through its Operation Cookie Drop campaign. To date, customerdonations have purchased more than 600,000 boxes of cookies for military personnel.

For the second year, thanks to a partnership with SageMobile Payment, many customers were able to purchasecookies by credit card at booth locations. During the 2013sale, troops that used the credit card swipers on averageincreased their troop proceeds by more than 35%. Super Sellers

Our super sellers enjoyed a Top Seller’sLuncheon with the CEO at the NorthCarolina Museum of Natural Sciences indowntown Raleigh. In addition tocelebrating their success and receivingtrophies, the girls and their families hadthe opportunity to spend the afternoonexploring the museum.

...EXPLORE

Studies show that girls are moresuccessful in cooperative, hands-on mathand science programs, and greatly benefitfrom all-girl science experiences. Byexposing girls to STEM and connectingthem with female role models, Girl Scouts– North Carolina Coastal Pines is helpingto inspire and motivate the nextgeneration of STEM professionals.

Partnering with women professionalsfrom local companies like Cisco Systems, GlaxoSmithKline, IBM, RTIInternational, and Time Warner Cable,the 7th annual TechnoQuest eventbrought teen girls onto the campus ofMeredith College. 136 girls explored a widevariety of topics including genetics,forensics, engineering, robotics,computer science and chemistry.

The UNC—Wilmington Center forMarine Science hosted MarineQuestwhere 142 girls and 61 adults explored themarine habitats of coastal Wilmington.Girls and adults participated in fourevents with a variety of activities, hands-on learning and marine adventures. Girlseven had the opportunity to collect saltwater samples from coastal fishing areasand examine the samples in a real-life lab.

The Gadget Girls, our all-girls FIRSTRobotics team, competed in the 2013NC Regional competition and placed35th overall – what an exciting finish fora rookie team! They were tasked withdesigning and building a robot thatcould gather and launch Frisbees into avariety of goals. Funding through GirlScouts of the USA and UnitedTechnologies helped support thisexciting new STEM opportunity.

With support from Time WarnerCable, two Precious GEMS events –Girls Engaged in Math/Science – weremade possible for 88 Girl Scout Juniorsand Cadettes. Girls discovered new livetelevision technologies on the campusof UNC – Wilmington and participatedin workshops facilitated by the NCBioNetwork and Lockheed Martin atMethodist University in Fayetteville.

...INSPIRE OTHERS

Girl Scouts is girl-driven, reflecting the ever-changing needsand interests of participating girls. Our program encouragesincreased skill-building and responsibility, all whilepromoting the development of strong leadership anddecision-making skills. All activities are grade-appropriateand based on the Girl Scout Leadership Experience as wellas the Girl Scout Promise and Law.

The it2 Girl Advisory Team – Inspire Today, InspireTomorrow – provides girls in all areas of our councilan opportunity to share their voice. This year, the2012-2013 team which is supported by adultvolunteers, provided valuable insights from the girlperspective on council programming, trainings,publications and membership communications.

This year the Council launched Girl Scout’s anti-bullying series program,bff – be a friend first. This series, which is designed to complement the aMazeJourney, provides girls with valuable skillsand tools for mastering the world ofrelationships. Coupled with the anti-bullying movement, this program aims to help girls develop skills for healthyrelationships during adolescence and into adulthood.

Our life skills programs continue to be successfulwith girls. Girls participated in American Red Cross Babysitting classes to learn skills that allow them to go out and help in theircommunities. In addition, girls participated in theFirst Aid and CPR Workshops for Girls wherethey learned how to respond to common first aidemergencies as well as cardiac and breathingemergencies.

Troop leaders and volunteers are inspiring girlsevery day in Girl Scouting. Volunteers from fourservice unit areas and the Centennial Jubileeevent committee were bestowed with our annualCEO Award at the 2013 Annual Meeting. Inaddition, community partners – Vollmer Farms inFranklin County, Louisburg College, and OurSavior Lutheran Church in Moore County – werehonored for their contributions to the council.

...LEAD

Girls are joining forces to change the world. Girl Scouts are leading the way in improving the quality of life in their local and global communitiesthrough citizenship, stewardship and the power of advocacy.

Furthermore, Girl Scout–North Carolina Coastal Pines offers specific programming where girls can explore and learn more about advocacy and the power of a voice.

In conjunction with our sister councils statewide, Girl Scouts from our council served with the North CarolinaGovernor’s Page Program during Girl Scout Week in March.Girls had the opportunity to meet high ranking governmentofficials, visit area landmarks and share their experienceswith their local representatives.

The 5th annual UNC Women in Law event at UNC– ChapelHill allowed girls and adult volunteers to participate in mocktrials, enhance their public speaking skills, and explore self-confidence. Girl Scout Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors andAmbassadors worked on developing a trial for a Title IX casein addition to learning about the law school experience fromfemale students.

Through a continued partnership with the United Way of the Greater Triangle’sWomen’s Leadership Council, our council hosted the Discover the Leader in You!Leadership Camp in August at Camp Mary Atkinson. With support from mentors, middle school-aged girls explored their personal values, leadership, conflictresolution tools, communication, and leadership action. Girls had the opportunity tohear from beekeeping experts with the Bayer Cropscience Facility, learn fromleadership students and staff from Meredith College, and help build a communitygarden at the Johnston County Boys and Girls Club.

...GO ADVENTURING

Encouraging healthy lifestyles is in the fabric of our program opportunitiesand Girl Scouts—North Carolina Coastal Pines works to create innovativeand engaging programs, events and camp sessions that get girls—andadults—up and moving. Camping, hiking, swimming and all things outdoorsshow girls of all ages that leading an active lifestyle will create lasting benefitsto overall physical, mental and emotional health.

The 2013 S’more Adventure summer season served nearly 2,000 campers, representing 36 of our 41 counties, at a session of resident camp or adventure trips.

Girl Scouts also participated in 16 volunteer-led Day Camps experiencing the outdoors andexploring program topics including science, music, farm life, survival skills and inventions.

With support from Cisco Systems, the council hosted a unique Summer Science Campwhere Girl Scout Cadettes attended hands-on workshops on the campus of MeredithCollege. Girls got a taste of campus life by staying in resident halls, eating in the dining halland going to classes.

Our exciting Adventure Trip Program served Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors andAmbassadors. Campers learned to surf the waves at Kure Beach, hiked the Applachianmountains in West Virginia, explored the Outer Banks by kayak down the Alligator River, and tackled their fears riding roller coasters at Busch Gardens.
