Our HeritageThe first Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, three young French women, motivated by the love of God and the recognition of God’s presence in each person came to San Antonio from Galveston in 1869 to minister to the sick and the poor. As a natural extension of their ministry, Mother Madeleine Chollet, Sister Pierre Cinquin and Sister Agnes Buisson ventured into the care of orphans starting the first children’s homes in San Antonio. In 1881, the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity was granted a charter by the State of Texas to operate educational institutions of all levels. Both Incarnate Word High School and the University of the Incarnate Word trace their roots back to this charter.

As the oldest Catholic, all-girl, college preparatory school in San Antonio, Incarnate Word High School has a storied history of academic distinction. Incarnate Word welcomes to its community persons of diverse backgrounds in the belief that their respectful interaction advances the discovery of truth, mutual understanding, self-realization and the common good. At Incarnate Word, each student is provided with countless opportunities to develop all dimensions of her person - mind, body, and spirit -through unique academic pursuits, extracurricular activities, and enriching community service projects.

MissionIn a faith-based, college preparatory environment, Incarnate Word High School prepares confident young women dedicated to academic excellence, Christian service and social justice.

A Letter from the DeanDear Family and Friends of IWHS,

We are pleased to share this special edition Annual Report with you. This report is a reflection of Incarnate Word High School’s financial and communal standing for the past two years. It is a proud moment to see the united efforts of our Mission and core values come together in Service, Integrity, Academic Excellence, Community of Faith, Stewardship and Compassion as they take root in our moto of Mind, Body and Spirit.

With the turn each page, photos and statements give claim to the core of our Mission. The IWHS leadership team has presented a clear path of vision and guidance. Solid leaders, stable academic programs and the continued support of our IWHS family and friends continue to be our driving force.

Our passion in Service is modeled by our Shamrock students, parents, faculty and friends through our participation in clubs including Peer Ministry, StuCo, and Pax Christi and in projects and activities such as the Heifer International Lenten Project, Sister’s Trail and Teen ACTS. These integral parts of our Shamrock service are a reflection of peace, in spreading faith, bringing hope and extending love.

Our Integrity is evident in our actions, in our continued traditions, resounded in your continued trust and support. During 2012-2014 we had an average enrollment of 501 students, an 87% retention rate of students starting as freshmen and graduating as seniors and a continued 12% legacy enrollment of daughters, granddaughters and siblings committed to continuing the Shamrock tradition.

Academic Excellence is kept alive in our students’ passion for learning and in our faculty’s dedication to teaching both validated in our many achievements and accomplishments. Some academic success over the past two years include, 61% of IWHS students made Honor Roll, 35% of IWHS seniors were in NHS, 305 dual credit hours were logged and a record breaking 26.5 million in scholarships and grants were awarded to our graduates.

Our Community of Faith is strong in our PTO, our Alumnae Association and in our student and faculty organizations. IWHS students grow in faith and model Christian behavior through daily prayer, class retreats, liturgies, service projects and with the IWHS community. It is a blessing to see our communities unite to support each other in the faith and love of IWHS.

Stewardship is demonstrated in the giving hearts of our family and friends. We are touched each year with the selfless generosity of our giving community, truly emulated in solidarity. Our records show our employee campaign yielded 100% participation each year followed tightly by our alumnae board giving participation at 98% and a total alumnae pledge fulfilment rate of 90%.

Our soul for Compassion is proven each day in acts of kindness, prayers and devotionals and is gifted back in the form of faith. Selfless giving is evident in our traditions such as Big Sister/Little Sister, Kindness month, and Service Day.

Thank you for providing us with these rich experiences, for entrusting us with the education of your daughters and for taking part in our collective Mission and becoming one with our vision in mind, body and spirit.

Praised be the Incarnate Word,

Dean, Preparatory Programs, UIW Dan Ochoa

M I N D B O D Y S P I R I TSERVICE - INTEGRITY - ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE - COMMUNITY OF FAITH - STEWARDSHIP - COMPASSION

ServiceEach year during the month of October the IWHS student body, faculty, staff and administrators dedicate one day to perform community service. More than 5,000 hours of service were performed in a mission of compassion by spreading faith, bringing hope and extending love to the greater community.

These are some additional service highlights from 2012 through 2014:

Q Michiko Tonegawa, Librarian, and Megan Zirkle ‘13 were selected as the 2013 honorees of the CCVI Spirit Award. Mrs. Tonegawa actively promoted global awareness through her work with the Japanese American Society, and was at the forefront of the recycling and digital age movements on campus. Miss Zirkle participated in the choir, Madrigals, and is a person of integrity who constantly worked to achieve academic excellence by going far beyond the call of duty.

Q 2014 CCVI Spirit Award winner, Peggy McChesney, mathematics teacher, whose commitment to her students, the school program and the expansion of the robotics program has blessed us honorably. Student honoree, Deandra Gonzalez ’14, served in numerous service projects, Madrigals, NHS and participated on team for Teen ACTS at her parish.

Q The sophomore classes at IWHS have given their time and talent volunteering at the Davidson Respite House for the past thirteen years.

Q The National Honor Society helped keep the San Antonio River clean by participating in Basura Bash, as wells as Habitat for Humanity workdays. They collected and donated 120 children’s books for Catholic Charities, wrapped gifts for the Elf Louise Workshop Project and donated funds for three IWHS Scholarships.

Q Pax Christ USA focused on Christian social justice issues and put faith into action with several community service projects. Students also volunteered at the Animal Shelter, The Village retirement community and made cards for school children in Turkey and Iraq.

Q In 2013, IWHS students, faculty and staff raised over $5000 for Heifer International and Women’s Global Connection. Q In 2014, the IWHS community contributed over $5,000 to the Heifer International Lenten Project with a Shamrock Farm

donation of 11 flocks of chickens, 7 flocks of geese, 3 flocks of ducks, a colony of bees, 6 goats, 5 llamas, 2 pigs, 2 sheep, 4 rabbits, 1 cow and funds to send a child to school.

Athletics 2013Athletics are an important part of life in Shamrock Country. In order to perform on the court or on the field, Incarnate Word athletes must first succeed in the classroom. At IWHS, our athletic programs complement our academic program with 55 percent of the student body participating in at least one sport each school year. Shamrock athletes are known for their outstanding city and state-wide performances and earn spots on their respective sport’s district and state teams for their superior skills.

Athletics 2014While fostering individual development for a team, we help students focus on strategies, commitment and the serious training required to become a successful athlete. During practices and games, our athletics are taught important life lessons while looking to build talent, improve skills and preform with sportsmanship and pride. IWHS fields teams in ten different sports with the primary goal of providing opportunities to as many girls as possible. IWHS is a member of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) and prior to district the teams also play a competitive schedule against local public schools.

CompassionCompassion, kindness and grace are prevalent at Incarnate Word High School through the actions of clubs, activities and daily student life. The Catholic Christian environment within the IWHS community reflects not only gospel values but also the philosophy and mission of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. Our students grow in their faith through daily prayer, theology classes, class retreats, liturgical experiences, service projects and by modeling Christian behavior.

Q Each school day begins and ends with prayer. Students also have opportunities to receive the sacraments of reconciliation and Holy Eucharist essential elements of sustaining our strength, our faith and our Catholic identity. The benefits of a Catholic education enhance the spiritual lives of our students because of the numerous opportunities they have to pray, reflect and share their faith with one another.

Q IWHS Athletic Director April Fricke rode her bike along the same route the first three Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word traveled from Freeport to San Antonio in 1869, approximately 250 miles. Fricke and the IWHS community raised a total of $2,575 in donations for the Friends of Christus Santa Rosa Foundation Mobile Mammography Program.

Q Our Campus Ministry is rich in student involvement. Students are given the opportunity to plan and prepare school liturgies, serve as lectors, altar servers, gift bearers, extra ordinary ministers of the Eucharist and music ministers. They are also given the opportunity to attend adoration in our Mother Pierre Chapel throughout the year. It is our hope that the spiritual formation our students receive at IWHS will have a lasting impact on the way they live out their Catholic faith for years to come.

Q IWHS celebrated Dia del los Muertos remembering the departed by displaying cherished photos, personal items, marigold flowers, sugar skulls, and candles representing their loved ones on an alter located in Madeleine Hall and in the cafeteria.

Q As a part of Pope Francis’ call for “Interfaith dialogue” Pax Christi USA welcomed guest speakers following the paths of faith/thought of Islam, Hinduism, Mormonism and Atheism.

Q The Retreat Program at Incarnate Word fosters class and school unity while building a closer relationship with God. A unique retreat is offered to each class. All retreats are student-run with the support of faculty and staff.

Q The IWHS community participated in many fundraising, awareness and community building activities including Student Council - Blood Drives, Pax Christi USA - Clothing Drive, Food Drive and Christmas card project, International Club -Toothbrushes and toothpaste Drive, and many more.
