2012 BY THE NUMBERS

42,270 Dollars raised by the Conservancy in 2012 to meet an ongoing

$50,000 challenge grant from the National Park Foundation for the

Conservancy’s Signature Project with Rock Creek Park.

5,550 Volunteer hours logged in the Park by the Conservancy and its

dedicated corps of Weed Warriors and groups from local schools,

youth groups, embassies and businesses.

105 Temperature, in degrees Fahrenheit, reached during the weeks of

Student Conservation Association work in Dumbarton Oaks Park.

27 Acres of shaded woodlands, wildflower meadows, rustic bridges,

waterfalls and trails in Dumbarton Oaks Park.

25 Young, native, riparian saplings freed from their strangling

invasive weeds to live to form a new forest along the stream.

13 Park neighbors working with the Conservancy, including three

embassies, two Harvard University study centers, and the Naval

Observatory.

9 Groups across the country chosen for the National Park

Foundation’s 2012 Park Partners Project. As one of the lucky

groups, the Conservancy received grant support and a year of

coaching on capacity- and partnership-building.

4 Feet the stream rose, overflowing both of the Park’s wooden

bridges after the violent rainstorm on July 10th.

2 Acres of weeds removed from the Park, allowing hidden bulbs and

woodland plants to emerge.

1 Dumbarton Oaks Park: a bucolic oasis for city dwellers and a

portal to one of the great periods in American landscape

architecture – the Country Place Era.

THE MISSION

The mission of the Dumbarton Oaks Park Conservancy is to restore, promote

and maintain Dumbarton Oaks Park in partnership with the National Park

Service.

The Conservancy is proud to work with our partner, the

National Park Service’s Rock Creek Park, in cooperation with

Superintendent Tara D. Morrison and Chief Ranger Nick

Bartolomeo.

Inscription composed by Mildred Bliss to honor Beatrix Farrand | 1933

Written in Latin and translated as follows:

May kindly stars guard the dreams born beneath

the spreading branches of Dumbarton Oaks.

Dedicated to the friendship of Beatrix Farrand

and to succeeding generations of seekers after Truth.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

2012 was a year of extraordinary growth for the Conservancy. Chosen in February

by the National Park Foundation as one of nine groups, nationally, to participate in

the Park Partners Project, we have leveraged NPF’s $5,000 grant and mentoring

program to expand and strengthen our young organization.

In April, the Embassy of Italy opened its doors for our second annual spring event,

fêting the 71st anniversary of the opening of Dumbarton Oaks Park to the public on

April 12, 1941. Special guest Elizabeth Barlow Rogers, Founding President of the

Central Park Conservancy, inspired our 200 gathered guests with her story of

Central Park’s restoration. We’ve continued our outreach efforts with monthly e-

blasts, educational and entertaining “snapshots” of the Park’s enduring narrative

and our work to preserve this green oasis in the city.

In June, the Conservancy welcomed expert hydrogeologist Zoe Kulakowski, who

presented to our neighbors and NPS colleagues her stormwater research gleaned

after three months in the Park in autumn of 2011. Zoe provided a scientific

underpinning to the major efforts of the Conservancy to address the stormwater

deterioration threatening the Park.

The Conservancy has worked closely with the staff of Rock Creek Park, under the

direction of Superintendent Tara D. Morrison and Chief Ranger Nick Bartolomeo.

Our tireless Executive Director, Ann Aldrich, together with the Park’s invasive plant

specialist, Ana Chuquin, has developed a highly successful Weed Warrior program.

Our volunteers have spent more than 5,550 hours working in the Park, controlling

the spread of non-native invasive vegetation. And oh, what a difference just a day of

volunteering can make, as illustrated by our photographs on page 17!

Launching our development effort has been a major focus this year. We can only

succeed in our restoration efforts if we have the support of our neighbors and

community. Under the supervision of part-time Director of Development Linzee

Feigenbaum, the Conservancy raised almost $110,000 in 2012 – two-and-a-half

times our fundraising in 2011. A highly successful, first annual year-end letter

reached over 1,000 potential donors, with inspiring results.

We begin 2013 with ever-increasing momentum and encouragement from the

community in support of our mission: to restore, promote and maintain Dumbarton

Oaks Park. Our long-term goals, outlined on page 19, are ambitious but possible

because of the extraordinary support of our friends. With your help, we shall

succeed in restoring and preserving this secret garden in the heart of Washington

for succeeding generations.

OUTREACH & EVENTS

Gardening with Nature

Thursday, April 19 | The Center for Hellenic Studies

The Conservancy welcomed special guest Douglas Dockery Thomas for a

lecture on Twin Maples, the property of Mrs. Thomas and her husband in

Salisbury, Connecticut. On the nearly 400-acre property, they have built a

Georgian-style house surrounded by both formal gardens and 40 acres of

wildflower meadows. The program showed the landscape in all seasons and

explored the process of planting sustainable wildflower meadows that are

low-maintenance and become more beautiful with each passing year. Mrs.

Thomas serves on the Board of Directors of the Dumbarton Oaks Park

Conservancy.

A Celebration of Dumbarton Oaks Park

Thursday, April 19th | The Embassy of Italy

His Excellency Claudio Bisogniero, Ambassador of Italy to the United States,

welcomed a standing-room only crowd to the Embassy of Italy for a

celebration of Dumbarton Oaks Park. Guest speaker Elizabeth Barlow Rogers,

founding president of the Central Park Conservancy, president of the

Foundation for Landscape Studies, and Advisory Board member of DOPC,

spoke about the restoration of Central Park. Rebecca Trafton and Ann

Aldrich, President and Executive Director of DOPC, discussed the

Conservancy’s work addressing the urgent needs of Dumbarton Oaks Park.

What’s Out There Weekend

Sunday, May 20th | Dumbarton Oaks Park

Board President Rebecca Trafton led 80 guests through tours of Dumbarton

Oaks Park, in collaboration with Dumbarton Oaks, as part of The Cultural

Landscape Foundation’s What’s Out There Weekend.

Discussion of Stormwater Issues in Dumbarton Oaks Park

Tuesday, June 19th | The Center for Hellenic Studies

Dumbarton Oaks Park Conservancy was pleased to sponsor special guest and

expert hydrogeologist Zoe Kulakowski, who presented the results of her

Rock Creek Park- and Geological Society of America-sponsored study of

!

stormwater issues in Dumbarton Oaks Park. Excessive stormwater runoff is a

problem that affects all of us. In our watershed, it is damaging private

property, eroding Dumbarton Oaks Park, and polluting the Park’s creek, Rock

Creek, the Potomac River, and the Chesapeake Bay. In 2011, Ms. Kulakowski

spent 12 weeks in Dumbarton Oaks Park collecting data, conducting

extensive analysis, and developing recommendations for solutions to the

stormwater problem.

Tour with the Garden Club of America’s Garden History and Design

Committee

Wednesday, September 12th | Dumbarton Oaks Park

Board president Rebecca Trafton lectured members of the GCA’s Garden

History and Design Committee, visiting Washington from across the country,

on the history of Dumbarton Oaks Park, Mildred and Robert Woods Bliss,

and Beatrix Farrand.

An Evening with Landscape Historian Judith Tankard

Thursday, October 25 | The Georgetown Neighborhood Library

The Conservancy was pleased to welcome another standing room-only crowd

to a lecture by Judith Tankard, author of Beatrix Farrand: Private Gardens,

Public Landscapes. Ms. Tankard lectured on the life and work of Beatrix

Farrand, America’s first successful female landscape architect and the

celebrated designer of Dumbarton Oaks Park.
