Last season, the Cal U men’s team equaled its highest finish at the PSAC Championships since 1984 and placed ninth at the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships for the fourth-straight year. The Vulcans also featured their second All-American in the last four years, and fifth overall, in Aaron Dinzeo. Dinzeo placed 20th overall at the NCAA National Championships to become the first NCAA All-American since Christopher Clark in 2008 last season. As a sophomore, he finished first on the team in every race and captured two individual titles - Buffalo and Saint Vincent. Dinzeo placed fifth overall at the PSAC Championships to earn All-PSAC status for a consecutive season. He qualified for the national race by finishing fourth overall at the NCAA Regional Championships. Dinzeo missed the entire outdoor track & field season last spring and may opt for a redshirt this fall due to his academic pursuit as a double-major. In addition to Dinzeo, the Vulcans return four sophomores and senior Chris Poss from last season. Poss managed to finish second on the team at the NCAA Regional Championships in only his third race of the season. He also placed third on the team at the PSAC Championships. Sophomore Nick Gibson ran in three events last season after previously competing in track & field at the NCAA Division I level with Saint Francis (Pa.). Last winter, he helped the Vulcans establish a new school record in the distance medley relay. Fellow sophomores Morgan Huegel and Nick Pezza both competed at the PSAC Championships last season. Pezza also ran at the NCAA Regional Championships as a true freshman, while classmate Abel Robinault competed in three events last year. The Vulcans feature added depth this season with the additions of sophomore Leon Ulrich and freshmen David Harrison, Steven Stoffel and Lenny Verdetto III.

The Cal U women’s team return five of its top six runners that competed at the 2011 PSAC Championships. The Vulcans also tied their highest team finish at the NCAA Regional Championships in two decades last season. Junior Erin Kling and sophomore Alex Zanella headline a group of 12 returning runners, as the duo registered a combined five team-best finishes. Kling, an Academic All-American last year, led the team three times and registered two top-10 finishes after missing the 2010 season due to injury. After finishing third on the team at the league championships, Kling closed the year as the team’s top finisher at the NCAA Regional Championships. Zanella ran in five races as a true freshman, placing in the top 10 overall three times. She also posted the team-best finish at the PSAC Championships. Last winter, she helped the Vulcans break the school record in the distance medley relay. Junior Julia Kubica, the school’s record-holder in the 1,500-meter run, will also be a key contributor this year after running in only two events in 2011. Redshirt senior Brittney Kanach, who is pursuing a master’s degree, returns for her sixth season with the Vulcans after she received a medical redshirt for being limited to only one race last year. Seniors Sandy Estep and Carly Youngeberg provide valuable experienced depth to the team. Estep has earned All-PSAC status in track & field while a member of relay teams four times in her career and holds a combined three school records. Youngeberg placed second on the team at the PSAC Championships last year while competing in only her second race of the season. Sophomore Allison Hall and juniors Brittany Amori and Andi Heasley will also compete in events this season. Hall tied Kling last year for the team lead by running in five events and placed sixth on the team at the PSAC Championships.

Daniel Caulfield enters his seventh season as the head coach for the men’s and women’s cross country programs at Cal U. In addition to his work with the cross country teams, he serves as an assistant coach with the men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field teams. Last season, he mentored his second cross country NCAA All-American in the last four years in Aaron Dinzeo. As a sophomore, he captured two individual victories and finished among the top five overall at both the PSAC and NCAA Regional Championships. During the 2012 indoor track season, Dinzeo provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 5,000-meter run. The cross country program also boasted a combined three Capital One Academic All-Americans in 2011. Two years ago, the Vulcans hosted the PSAC Championships at Roadman Park for the first time in nearly two decades. Led by an All-PSAC performance by Dinzeo, the men’s team posted its best finish since 1986. In 2009, Caulfield coached two of the top freshmen in the conference with Erin Kling becoming the first Cal U women’s runner to earn All-PSAC honors since 1984 and was named the PSAC Freshman of the Year. Since arriving in the PSAC, he has coached athletes to 10 combined conference titles in cross country and track & field. He also mentored NCAA All-American and Olympic

Trials qualifier Christopher Clark. In 2008, Clark posted one of the most impressive seasons by a runner in program history, earning USTFCCCA Atlantic Region and PSAC Men’s Athlete of the Year laurels. In addition to their improvement on the course, Caulfield’s teams are also excelling in the classroom. In each of the last three years, both the men’s and women’s team were named a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team. Over the last four years, the program has featured four Academic All-Americans and last year two runners received PSAC Champion Scholar Awards. Caulfield joined Cal U after serving as the head men’s and women’s track & field and cross country coach at PSAC rival Clarion. A native of Ireland, he started coaching at his alma mater Adams State in Alamosa, Colo. While serving as a coach with the Grizzlies, Adams State won four NCAA women’s cross country national championships and two NCAA men’s titles. During his collegiate career, he was a 10-time All-American and two-time NAIA National Champion. He helped lead the Grizzlies’ cross country program to National Championships in 1993 and 1994 after placing in the top five during both championship races. Caulfield also was the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) record

holder in the 800- and 1500-meter runs. He was named to the RMAC All-Time Men’s Cross Country Team in 2009. Caulfield earned his bachelor’s degree from ASC in exercise physiology and in late 1996 returned to Ireland to work in the exercise physiology department of the Blackrock Clinic, one of the country’s most established healthcare facilities. He returned to ASC in 1998 to complete his master’s degree and coached there until December 2004. The Irish native also holds the national indoor record in the 800 meters. Caulfield was a two-time European Cup champion in the 800 and 1500 meters. In 2001, he was among the top 50 in the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World rankings. Caulfield was a two-time runner-up at the Millrose Games and was a top-10 finisher at the 2001 World Indoor Championships in Lisbon, Portugal.

As part of its annual summer camp, the Cal U cross country program held a free lecture on Aug. 1, 2012, fea-turing two-time Olympian Amy Rudolph and American-record holder Chris Solinsky. The event featured an audience of about 250 people. A native of Pennsylvania, Rudolph competed in the 5,000-meter run at both the 1996 (Atlanta) and 2000 (Sydney) Olympics. She was a six-time U.S. Champion and was the former Ameri-can record holder in the 5,000-meter run. Rudolph captured eight state championships, was a NCAA national champion at Providence and was a member of the United States team that finished second at the 2002 World Cross Country Championships. Solinsky broke the American record in the 10,000-meter run in 2010 (last 800 meters - 1:56.2) and was ranked third in the world that same year. He also won the 2002 Foot Locker Cham-pionship by tying the largest margin of victory and later won five NCAA national titles at Wisconsin. In 2011, the Cal U summer camp featured Olympians Elva Dryer and Grant Robison, along with prominent distance coaches Joe Newton and Dr. Joe Vigil, as instructors.

She received her bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology with Cum Laude honors from Adams State before completing her master’s degree in health and physical education.

Caulfield helped the Grizzlies to three-straight NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships from 1997 to 1999. During her collegiate career, she earned All-America honors in the 5,000 and 10,000-meter runs. Two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Roger Kingdom enters his ninth year working with the cross country and track & field programs at Cal U. Kingdom, the former world and American record holder in the 110-meter hurdles, serves as the Director of the Track & Field and Cross Country programs at Cal U. Kingdom is a five-time United States Outdoor Champion and two-time gold medalist at the Pan Am Games. He also holds a World Cup gold medal and won gold at the World University Games and World Indoor Championships.

He remains one of only two runners to ever win consecutive Olympic titles in the 110-meter hurdles. A native of Georgia, he joined the Cal U athletic program in 2004 before being named interim head track & field coach in March of the following year. In his time as head coach, Cal U has featured over 20 All-Americans, as well as nearly 50 PSAC Indoor and Outdoor Champions. Five times during his tenure, the Vulcans have had the PSAC Track Athlete of the Year and on multiple occasions the PSAC Most Valuable Athlete and PSAC Freshman of the Year.

Under Kingdom’s supervision Cal U has had at least one All-American in each season from 2007-2012 including six-time honoree Brice Myers and four-time member Christopher Clark. The women’s program has also had two All-Americans, with current track & field assistant coach Danielle Malay receiving honors in 2008 and Clare McSweeney earning recognition two year later. This summer, Kingdom was recognized as an Olympic “heritage athlete” at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Oregon.

Hall competed on cross country and track & field teams at Cal U from 2007-11. While with the cross country program, she ran in four PSAC Championships and four NCAA Regional Championship races. As a junior, Hall helped the program record the best team finish at the NCAA Regional Championship in two decades.

In track & field, she was a 10-time qualifier in five events for the PSAC Championships. Hall set the school record in the 1-mile run as a junior with a time of 5:11.92 and last spring was a member of the distance medley relay that broke the school record. HISTORY The cross country program at Cal U dates back over 40 years to the early 1970’s. In the early years of the program, the cross country team was simply a segment of the track and field program. Early into the program a solid foundation was put into place when the team of runners achieved success at a regional level by earning a second place finish at the NAIA District 18 meet in 1972. This event placed Cal U against current PSAC rivals such as IUP and Slippery Rock. As the 1970’s continued, cross country lost popularity and did not receive a great amount of support or exposure. However, the Vulcan runners continued to be successful. Without much attention being given to athletics at the time, James Criner, Doug Boyd and Dean Shaw were still able to earn All-PSAC laurels during this stretch. Much of this success has to be correlated with longtime head coach Marty Uher. In 2009, Uher was inducted into the Cal U Athletics Hall of Fame for his efforts and dedication to the program over multiple decades. With people consumed by the Vietnam War through the mid 1970’s, athletics were put aside. It wasn’t until the war ended around 1975 when people began to invest more time, energy and resources back into athletics. After the 1977 and 1978 campaigns, the Vulcan cross country team garnered respect at the highest level when Dean Shaw was selected an NCAA All-American. Shaw set the foundation and paved the way over the next five years for Brian Ferrari and Mike Bradley. Ferrari went on to become a three-time All-American (1981-83) and captured the highest individual accolade

possible by winning the NCAA Division II National Individual Championship in 1983. Along with Ferrari in ‘83, Bradley also earned All-America status. Through the mid 1980’s the cross country program remained competitive on the conference level by consistently posting All-PSAC performers. Paul Jost had three All-PSAC seasons (1984-86) while Pete Iannacchione and Paul Bryan also earned the honors after the 1985 and 1986 seasons respectively. During this same time frame, the institution of the women’s cross-country program began to flourish. In one of the first years of the program, Rachel Brooks and Kim Price both earned All-PSAC laurels. Price finished 15th in the conference, while Brooks took home the top spot in 1980. The women’s team also produced two other All-PSAC performers in the 1983 season when Gwen Van Dine

and Sue Cavanaugh earned the honors. Cavanaugh also went onto repeat as an all-conference performer the following year. However, the cross-country teams would eventually fall on hard times. The Vulcans had lost their edge on both the men’s and women’s teams and struggled to remain competitive. Over 21 seasons between 1986 and 2007, Adam Manewell was the only student-athlete to earn All-PSAC accolades during this time when he finished 15th in 1994. When head coach Daniel Caulfield arrived on campus in 2006 from PSAC rival Clarion, a positive change seemed likely. Christopher Clark, a proven PSAC contender, followed Caulfield to Cal U and the program experienced a drastic transformation. In 2008, Clark not only garnered All-PSAC laurels, but also became

the conference champion and Athlete of the Year, NCAA Regional Champion and the first Cal U cross country All-American since 1983. The women’s team also experienced a significant turnaround. Erin Kling earned All-PSAC honors and also collected the PSAC Freshman of the Year award in 2009. This was the first time in 25 years a member of the women’s cross country team earned All-PSAC honors. Last season, Aaron Dinzeo received All-PSAC status for the second-straight year and became the fifth NCAA All-American in program history. Under Caulfield’s direction, the men’s and women’s teams have had multiple student-athletes receive all-academic honors from the USTFCCCA. In addition, three runners were selected Academic All-Americans last year with Kling and Laurie Hall becoming the first female Academic All-Americans in program history.

SEASON REVIEW Sophomore Aaron Dinzeo captured two individual titles in 2011 en route to becoming the fifth All-American in program history. He received All-PSAC honors for the second-straight year while becoming the first Cal U runner since 2008 to qualify for the NCAA National Championship. Dinzeo finished 20th overall in a field of 187 runners at the national race to become the second All-American in the last four years under head coach Daniel Caulfield. Senior Tim Lahmers was the recipient of the inaugural PSAC Champion Scholar Award. He was a two-time USTFCCCA All-Academic honoree in cross country and was a Capital One Academic All-America selection in 2011. As a team, Cal U posted their second-straight sixth-place finish at the PSAC Championships while placing ninth at the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships for the fourth year in a row. On the women’s side, the Vulcans finished as high as second at the Buffalo Stampede by placing three top-10 finishers. At the league championship race in October, Cal U finished 13th overall before ending the season with a second-straight 14th-place finish at the regional championships. For the third-straight year, both Cal U programs were recognized as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team. The Vulcans also had a combined eight runners earn individual academic honors from the organization.

PSAC Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. Among its recent enhancements the PSAC has expanded its membership twice during a four-year span. The first occurred during the 2008-09 academic year with the addition of full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. Over the past year, the PSAC’s Board of Directors agreed to welcome Seton Hill University as an associate member to begin play in field hockey during the 2011-12 campaign. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the two associate members. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into

NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 246 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s

estimated 6,300 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly

doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s.

Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, seven league schools also compete at the Division

I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 127,000 students and claim over 710,000 alumni, including 483,000

who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate and assistant commissioner, and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.

In 2011, the California University of Pennsylvania men’s and women’s cross country teams were both named a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division II All-Academic Team and a combined eight Vulcans (four men, four women) received individual All-Academic honors from the USTFCCCA. Sophomores Savantuay Boyette and Aaron Dinzeo, along with seniors Tim Lahmers and Chris Wolfe, were named to the USTFCCCA Division II All-Academic Men’s Team. On the women’s side, freshman Allison Hall, senior Laurie Hall, sophomore Erin Kling and freshman Alex Zanella were named to the USTFCCCA Division II All-Academic Team. The men’s team posted a GPA of 3.36 and was one of 80 teams recognized and the women’s team compiled a GPA of 3.44 and was one of 124 teams recognized by the organization. The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) had a combined 22 programs (men’s and women’s) selected as USTFCCCA All-Academic Teams. Both programs have maintained above a 3.25 GPA for the past five years with the Cal U men’s program receiving the all-academic laurel in four-consecutive seasons, while the women’s program has garnered the honor in each of the last three years. To qualify for USTFCCCA All-Academic individual honors, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or greater through the most-recent semester, completed at least 12

USTFCCCA

credit hours in the semester of cross country competition, and placed in the top 50 percent at the most recent NCAA National Championships or in the top 30 percent at the NCAA Regional Championships. To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, the team must have a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better and have compiled a score (finished at least five runners) at their respective NCAA Regional Championship.

The USTFCCCA is a non-profit professional organization representing cross country and track & field coaches of all levels. The organization represents over 8,000 coaching members encompassing 94 percent of all NCAA track & field programs (DI, DII, and DIII) and includes members representing the NAIA as well as a number of state high school coaches associations. The USTFCCCA serves as an advocate for cross country and track & field coaches, providing a leadership structure to assist the needs of a diverse membership, serving as a lobbyist for coaches’ interests, and working as a liaison between the various stakeholders in the sports of cross country and track & field.
