upcoming Women’s Bi-
ble Study on the book
of Proverbs
(Wednesday evenings)
and the Moms Bible
Study (Tuesday morn-
ings).
A starlit path led guests
through the darkened
hall where “they found
the babe, wrapped in
strips of cloth and lying
in a manger.” Women
warmly welcomed their
friends and neighbors
with hot coffee and
conversation. Candle-
light shone on the faces
of Mary and Joseph, the
shepherds and magi in
nativity sets and other
mementos of Christ-
mases past. Soothing
music filled the room as
everyone settled in for
an afternoon of fellow-
ship with the
Christchild and with
one another.
Such was the scene at
Advent by Candlelight,
a ministry by and for
the women of St. John’s
and our community.
Held in the fellowship
hall on the Sunday after
Thanksgiving, Advent
by Candlelight invites
women and school-age
girls to relax and refocus
as they enter the busy
Christmas season. This
year’s event featured a
girls’ choir, a flautist,
solo and duet singers, a
family choir, and several
talented pianists per-
forming musical selec-
tions for the theme,
“Take Me to the Man-
ger.” Women of the
congregation took turns
reading Scripture. Many
helping hands worked
to create an atmosphere
of enjoyment for all.
Particular thanks go to
Janet Gehlhar, Advent
by Candlelight coordi-
nator. Mrs. Gehlhar

ministry activities at St.
John’s, including the

A Girl’s Choir sang at this
year’s Advent by Candle-
light.
What better way to kick
off the Christmas sea-
son than enjoying the
choral music of the
Kasson Christmas Can-
tata titled Heaven and
Nature Sing. Twelve
members of our con-
gregation really got into
the spirit by joining the
choir. The choir sang
many traditional Christ-
mas hymns that even
many young children
know. It was a very
delightful afternoon
and before the concert
even started, it had
started snowing out-
side.
The choir was led by
Debra Burkel
Schwartau, who just
happens to be Joyce
Burkel's daughter and
former member of our
church. Did you notice
another former mem-
ber in the choir--Kris
Lilledahl?
The Kasson choir has a
tradition of finishing
each cantata with a
singing of The King is
Coming. Only a few
from St. John's had
heard the song before,
but they all enjoyed
singing it.
Afterward, the congre-
gation hosted h'our de
vours, sweets, coffee

What is Kids Count?
It is a program for chil-

have been abused or
have witnessed violence.
What is the Friday
night program?
Elementary aged chil-

school and taken to the
Friendship House for
supper and an activity.
Where is the Friend-

It is at 480 W. 8th St. in
Red Wing.
How can I help?
The Women’s Bible

the 2nd Friday of each
month. The supper
needs to be dropped off
at the Friendship House
by 4 pm on that day.
The building is open all
day and there is a refrig-

the food. If the food
needs to be reheated,
the staff will do that.

But when you give to

Gift of appreciated
securities
Do you own assets
such as stocks, bonds,
and mutual funds
which have increased in
value since they were
purchased? Have you
owned them for over
12 months?
If so, you may want to
consider using them to
make your charitable
gifts.
Here’s why. Any sale of
stock which has in-
creased in value since
purchase will result in a
capital gains tax, which
is the difference be-
tween the cost basis
and the selling price.
If you donate appre-
ciated securities –
you may enjoy a dou-
ble benefit.
1. You receive a chari-
table income tax deduc-
tion for the full fair
market value of the as-
set. A deduction ca be
taken up to 30% of
your adjusted gross in-
come. Excess deduc-
tions can be carried in-
to an many as five addi-
tional tax years if neces-
sary.
2. You avoid the capital
gains tax on the securi-
ty’s appreciation.
Here’s how it works.
Over the past years,
Lydia has given numer-
ous gifts to her congre-
gation and synod. Like
many of our Christian
friends, she owns stock
in various companies.
Each year, she chooses
to give a gift for the
Lord by transferring
stock which has appre-
ciated in value. Her
most recent gift was
stock she purchased
several years ago for
$600 and has increased
in value to $1,000.
Lydia’s initial invest-
ment of $600 resulted
in a $1,000 gift and a
$1,000 deduction on
her income taxes (Lydia
itemizes deductions on
her tax return). She also
avoided paying capital
gains taxes on her gift.
Lydia told us, “I think
it’s important to share my
blessings with my church
and the WELS.
Also, as I start planning
my retirement, my gift plan-
ning counselor can help me
use my stock to create a
charitable gift annuity
(CGA). That way I will
receive the income I need
and I can also provide a
nice gift for spreading the
gospel.”
Giving securities is one
of the many ways you
can combine your char-
itable giving goals with
effective estate and fi-
nancial planning.
How can I get help?
Your congregation has
Endowment/Trust
Fund committee mem-
bers who may be able
to help you.
Your synod also has
gift planning counselors
throughout the United
States who would also
be happy to help you.
