24th Annual Leo Keenan Invitational Golf TournamentTRANSCRIPT
Bartlett Country CluB | olean, n.y. | Sept. 16-17, 2012
The St. Bonaventure golf team will be aiming for its 15th team victory in the Leo Keenan Invitational when the 24th annual tournament kicks off Sunday at Bartlett Country Club.
The host Bonnies are among eight teams competing in the 36-hole event that wraps up with the final round on Monday. The field includes seven teams that participated in last year’s invitational, including defending champion Robert Morris University.
Guided by second-year coach John Powers, the Bonnies have their sights set on winning their first Keenan title since 2010, when senior Brian McKenna won medalist honors by shooting a 139. In addition to McKenna, that winning team included three current St. Bonaventure players in senior Greg Horvath, and juniors Scott Brady and Chris Mackey.
St. Bonaventure finished third in last year’s tournament behind McKenna, who charged to a top-10 finish after shooting a 1-under 69 in the final round on the Bonnies’ home course.
Robert Morris ran away with the title in 2011, shooting a two-round tournament record 571. Three of the five golfers from that championship team return this year for the Colonials.
This year’s field also includes Humber College, which
placed second in last year’s invitational, and Drexel, which finished fourth. Joining them are Long Island University, Ottawa University, La Salle and Niagara.
Four golfers who finished among the top 10 at the 2011 Keenan Invitational will be vying for medalist honors this year. Robert Morris’ Ryan Prokay tied for third last year while his Colonials’ teammate, Brock Pompeani, tied for fifth. Humber’s Alex Dumais placed seventh and McKenna tied for 10th.
St. Bonaventure and Robert Morris (2011 and 1995) are the only teams to have won multiple Keenan team championships. The Bonnies, Colonials and Drexel (2009) are the only teams competing this year to have previously won the event.
St. Bonaventure comes into the Keenan Invitational fresh off of a second-place finish in the 16-team Navy Fall Classic. Four Bonnies tied for 14th place or better in the two-round tournament, led by McKenna, who carded rounds of 72 and 71 for a fifth-place finish. Horvath tied for 11th and freshmen Josh Stauffer and Darren Simons finished tied for 14th.
Sophomore Daniel Dunnigan and freshman Patrick Milkovich will also be competing for the Bonnies. Dunnigan played last year as an individual, while Milkovich will be making his Keenan debut at the par-70 6,308-yard Bartlett Country Club.

Bonnies coach John Powers instructs Greg Horvath during last year’s Leo Keenan Invitational. Horvath shot 149 for the tournament and finished in a tie for 20th.
Leo e. Keenan Jr.The first St. Bonaventure Golf Invitational was held at Bartlett Country Club in 1989. Five years later, the tournament was renamed in honor of former St. Bonaventure golf coach Leo E. Keenan, Jr., the man who remains the inspiration for the event.
Following service in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II, Keenan returned to St. Bonaventure and earned his degree in 1947. He taught English at the University for more than 50 years, from 1949 until 2001. He specialized in American Literature and Public Speaking, as well as Bibliography and Research. He also served as an acting dean, and for many years oversaw the University summer school program. He passed away in 2002.
During his tenure as coach, the Bonnies amassed a record of 172-90-10, including three undefeated teams. In 1967, St. Bonaventure won the ECAC Regional Championship under his leadership. He was the first coach to take a St. Bonaventure team into international competition, journeying to the famed Old Course at St Andrews in Scotland in 1971 and 1973.
Like himself, Keenan’s players were staunch competitors who lived by the rules of the game and always acted like gentlemen. The loyalty of his former players to the coach is a testament to the lasting impact he had on their lives.
He retired from coaching in 1987; he was active in the planning and running of this tournament when it commenced two years later. The prestige of the tournament and the caliber of competition has increased every year, much of it due to Keenan’s efforts.
He was known as “Coach,” “Professor” and “Uncle Leo,” but he preferred to be thought of simply as a Bonaventure man, someone who gave the majority of his professional life in unwavering service to his alma mater, St. Bonaventure University.
In 1993, Coach Keenan was inducted into the St. Bonaventure Athletic Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the St. Bonaventure ROTC Hall of Fame and the St. Bonaventure Alumni Hall of Fame. His late wife, Ann, his nine children, a daughter-in-law and eight of his grandchildren have graduated or are currently attending Keenan’s beloved St. Bonaventure University.

We welcome all spectators to the Keenan Invita-tional and hope you enjoy your visit to Olean and Bartlett Country Club. While here, we ask that you observe a few simple rules consistent with eti-quette of the game:
• You are welcome to walk the course, but please remain in the rough or on the cart paths and only cross fairways at 90 degree angles.
• Please do not hold conversations with players during their rounds as this may be construed as giving advice. Only the school’s coach is allowed to give advice. However, feel free to cheer or encour-age golfers.
