Purpose Statement:
The Buchanan Westerners Riding Club Incorporated is a non-profit organization run solely by its membership. Our non-profit organization is dedicated to the American Family through their love of horses. Our goal is to be able to continue supporting programs involving Horseback Riding for Handicapped Children, High School Equestrians, and 4-H Youth Activities.
Buchanan Westerners was founded in 1946 and boasts a membership of about 125 members. Our membership runs on a calendar year. Buchanan Westerners does not focus on any particular breed, although we are approved through PAC. We hold two shows each month from May through September in addition to various clinics and fun show events. Our annual banquet is held in the late fall and offers several High Point awards, including age divisions as well as pleasure and gaming. We offer one primary fund-raiser per year; a Tack Swap held in the fall and a variety of smaller fund-raisers throughout the year.
We have a website; www.buchananwesterners.org where many of your questions may be answered. If you have questions and wish to speak to someone, the board of directors are listed on the website as well. Please call one of the officers of the board or the horse show manager for more detailed questions.
Monthly meetings for Buchanan Westerners are the second Thursday of each month at 7:30pm at the Buchanan Westerners clubhouse in Buchanan, MI.
We offer a couple of Walk/Trot classes for adults and children, which are restricted to Walk/Trot only. Exhibitors in Walk/Trot are not eligible for other Walk/Trot/Canter classes. So, bring your babies to the walk/trot classes, and have a great experience and a lot of fun!

Warm & Fuzzy Open Show May 20: Includes “Human Classes.” If you don't want to bring your horse, you can still participate in the show! There are also Walk/Trot, Rated and Cloverbud classes, as well as English, Western and Speed classes for youth and adults. Class fees are $5 per class, blanket of $40. Stalls are $20 for the day with no cleaning required, or trailer-in for $5 per horse. Show clothes are optional.
We are a volunteer group consisting of six 4-H clubs. We meet monthly to coordinate fundraisers and activities. Committees include Cloverbud, Education/Fun, Showbill/Paperwork/Registration, Ribbons/Trophies, Advertising, Trail/Jumping, Building/Grounds Maintenance, Sportsmanship, and Fundraising. We have youth presentations and a Horse Bowl and Horse Judging Team. The Executive Board added Youth Leaders as part of the Executive Board for the past 4 years. Some of the current 4-H clubs have been in existence for over 40 years.
We provide seven open horse shows from May through early July. We have a weeklong horse show for the clubs during the third week of July called “Achievement Days”. During Achievement Days, there are Championship Classes at night as well as Team Events. The clubs decorate stall areas during Achievement Days according to a theme. Voting decides the winning club and that club picks the following year’s theme. We create a Sponsor Book that includes information about each club and sponsors. The book also has theme drawings on the front and back cover designed by club members. Another long-standing tradition is Achievement Days T-shirts with theme drawings on the front and back. Achievement Days is meant to celebrate everyone’s accomplishments for the year and provide items to remember the year.
We send representatives to the State 4-H show depending on the number of participants from the previous year. Qualification requires an essay and points totaled from classes chosen during five of the open shows. Some clubs have chosen to show and stay at the Genesee County Fair the past two years. Last year was the first year we showed during the actual fair. We hope to expand this experience to include the community by possibly creating stick horses or other youth activities. Community service projects include beautification projects at the Cummings Center.
Goals chosen to work on as an Association included adding more fun activities, creating a positive atmosphere at GCHLA meetings and events, and good communication between board members, leaders, parents, and members of GCHLA. We have made progress in the goal areas, but intend to strengthen the areas even more in the 2011-2012 year.
Please contact the adult GCHLA Secretary, Lori Eastwood at 810-691-8365 or email at [email protected] for more information about joining a club, coming to open shows, or placing an ad in the Sponsor Book. GCHLA is also on Facebook. A big thank you to the Extension Educator, Darren Bagley who has supported GCHLA through the years in developing goals and supporting increased youth leadership in the association. Thank you to all the leaders, youth, parents, friends and sponsors, that volunteer time and work to the GCHLA.
Open Show Series dates are June 9/10, 23/24 and July 7/8: Classes include a separate ring for Walk/Trot, Rated, Cloverbud and Trail. The main arena will have Novice, Hunt Seat, Saddle Seat, Jumping, Western, Gymkhana, Dressage and Jackpot classes. There are separate Showmanship and Equitation classes for the Gymkhana riders. Daily Highpoint awards are offered for Novice, Dressage, Rail, and Gymkhana riders. Fees include $3 office fee, $5 per class fee or blanket fees of $30 (B ring) /$50 (A ring) per day, $45 (B ring) /$85 (A ring) per weekend. Jackpot classes are $10. Highpoint entry fees are $2. Stalls are available for $20 per day, $35 for two days or $45 for Friday through Sunday with no stall cleaning required. A trailer-in fee of $10 per horse is required for those horses not stalled. I apply to participate in or observe equine events provided and sponsored by Ranch Horse Association of Michigan (RHAM). Does your association have a Mission Statement? The Thumb Sport Horse Association is a non-profit organization with a purpose, as stated in the bylaws to:
• Promote greater interest activities, and education among those who enjoy the world of the sport horse;
• Promote classical, ethical training principles that provide a sound foundation for any of the sport horse disciplines;
• Cultivate mutual respect, consideration, and understanding among members for all the sport horse disciplines;
• Encourage members to exchange information and ideas; and
• Cooperate with other related associations and groups to further good horsemanship and to promote fair an humane treatment of all equines.
TSHA was formed in late 2008. Our meetings are an exchange of ideas and information in a relaxed environment. Each month, a TSHA member “hosts” the meeting. Hosting consists of deciding on the location and providing the educational program for that meeting. Education can be presented by a member of TSHA, or by a guest expert. Our meetings are low key and fun with good food.
Some of the topics have been: Horse trailer maintenance, equine dentistry with Steve Shaver - equine dentist, soundness through correct trimming and shoeing with Pal Melcher - master farrier, info and tips on participating in the Shore-to-Shore ride in northern Michigan, conditioning your horse for the first spring trail ride, and holistic health care by Dr. Short, DVM.
We also put on clinics. Some have been: Equine structural integration and myofascial release for the soundness of your horse; a “fun day” of ground work and long lining; Parts 1 and 2 of “The Ultimate Seat” clinics; A “new dressage test” clinic.
In 2011 we put on our first Sport Horse Schooling Show, including dressage, lead line dressage, hunt seat, and jumping classes. Our 2012 show will be on August 25th at the Huron County Fairgrounds in Bad Axe, MI. We are adding western dressage and dressage trail classes to the show. The info an patterns for these classes will be on our website in February.
On August 26th, the ay after the show, our judge, Dorothy Mueller, will conduct a clinic for dressage and for hunt/jump riders. You do not need to enter both the show and the clinic, but those entered in the show will have first chance to enter the clinic.
