The first cattle were brought to Routt County in 1871 to utilize

summer pastures.

In 1890’s sheep companies began to summer sheep in Routt County.

Competing for range caused “range wars” between cattlemen and

sheepmen. Today, approximately 70% of the agricultural income in

Routt County comes from raising cattle.

Hay production was the first farming in Routt County. It was essential

to feed livestock that were wintered here.

Typical hay production on dryland ground is 1 ton/acre-double if

irrigated ground.

Ranchers and farmers receive the same prices today that their

parents did. However, costs for fuel, equipment, labor and supplies

have increased.

The average age for a Routt County Rancher is 53.

A cow will consume 7-12 gallons of water/day.

Inspection by the local Brand Inspector is required any time livestock

is to be transported over 75 miles or upon leaving the state.

Several local agencies are available to assist landowners: the county

extension agent; NRCS (soil conservation); Farm Service Agency;

Forest Service; and the Community Ag Alliance to name a few.
