ABOUT BLOOMSBURG

Bloomsburg University, a member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, is a four-year coeducational public university founded in 1839. Through the stages of its development from a normal school to a teachers college to a multipurpose state college and finally to a university in 1983, the institution has retained its emphasis on liberal arts and career education.

Bloomsburg is recognized as one of the best 100 public universities in the United States, and excellence, ranging from its 18 national championships to its international reputation in a number of its academic programs, is an attitude found throughout the faculty and staff.

About 90 percent of Bloomsburg’s students come from throughout Pennsylvania, creating a diverse mix of cultures and ideas. It’s a place where friendships that last a lifetime begin. And it’s a busy place — with more than 200 student organizations and activities, NCAA Division II athletic programs and a popular recreation center.

The university’s Division of Continuing and Distance Education serves students through nondegree credit courses, noncredit minicourses, off-campus classes, credit for life experience and distance learning courses on public television.

The Town of Bloomsburg, located in the Susquehanna River Valley, has a population of about 12,000 people. The central business district is just three blocks southwest of campus, and includes more than 80 retail stores, restaurants, and the Bloomsburg Fair in September. More stores, restaurants and theaters can be found along nearby Route 11 and at the Columbia Mall, northwest of town.

The university is within a one-hour drive from such cities as Hazleton, Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre and Scranton; 1.5 hours from Harrisburg; 2.5 hours from Philadelphia; 3 hours from New York City and Baltimore; and four hours from Pittsburgh and Washington, DC.

2012 Season Preview

2012 SEASON PREVIEW

The Bloomsburg University women’s soccer team has a long tradition of winning in its history. Coming off anoth-er postseason appearance in 2011, the Huskies come out of preseason camp geared up to get the upcoming 2012 season underway.

Bloomsburg earned its second consecutive trip to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) playoffs last season. It finished the year with a 10-8-1 record, eclipsing the double-digit victories mark for the second straight year, along with three of the last four.

Looking to continue that tradition of winning will be a new head coach. Stephanie Anderson comes to Bloomsburg after serving as the assistant coach at Bucknell University last season. She previously served as a graduate assistant at Drury University in Missouri and as an assistant at her alma mater, Nebraska Wesleyan University.

The Huskies return 17 players from last season in addition to 13 newcomers. The 2012 roster features four seniors, and consists of five forwards, 12 midfielders, 10 defenders, and 3 goalkeepers.

FORWARDSAs a unit, BU outscored its opponents last season, 25-22, for an average of 1.32 goal per game, which ranked 10th in the PSAC. Despite losing two of its top three goal-scorers to graduation, Bloomsburg brings back a quartet of talent-ed and experienced upperclassmen on the front line.

Junior Tara Huber was the Huskies’ second-leading goal scorer last season. She netted six goals, including a two-goal outing against Davis and Elkins in the season opener. Huber tied for the team-lead in assists with four, tying her career-high as well.

Joining Huber in the Husky attack are fellow juniors Katy Fexa and Jamie Vaniver. Both forwards saw considerable playing time in 2011 and each was able to find the back of the net. Fexa’s lone goal came off a penalty kick against Charleston. Vaniver scored three goals with as many as-sists last season and played in all 19 games.

MIDFIELDBloomsburg placed two midfielders on the All-PSAC team last season. Katie Walczuk and Natalie Adams were first and third on the team in scoring, respectively. Both student-athletes graduated.

Senior Caroline Mountney and junior Kyleigh Reckage take over in the midfield this season and will be looked upon for some offensive production. Both players are en-tering their third season in maroon-and-gold and in search for their first career goal.

Lauren Stedman moves to forward in the Husky forma-tion after spending her previous seasons on defense. The senior played in all 19 games in 2011 and has appeared in 53 in her career with three goals and an assist.

2012 SEASON PREVIEW

“The leadership of the upperclassmen has been stellar so far,” Anderson said. “They are leading through example and are demonstrating the kind of sacrifice it takes to be successful in such a competitive conference. I have been very proud of their ability to not only keep the team fo-cused, but to stay united in the face of so much change in the program.”

Sophomore Sierra Fortunato saw significant playing time in her freshman campaign last season. She started 10 of her 14 games played and should provide a solid third op-tion at midfield.

DEFENSEThe Husky defense was one of the team’s strongest as-sets last season. It allowed an average of 1.11 goals/game, placing BU sixth in the PSAC. Seven of the team’s 10 wins came by shutout.

BU returns nine defenders, six of which are upperclass-men. Caitlin Raynes enters her fourth year with the program. She saw action in 16 games last season while tallying an assist in BU’s 2-0 win over Lock Haven.

Four juniors will also be depended on to strengthen the back line this season. Lauren Kreglow, Jessy Shober, and Kelsey Holtz all played in double-digit games last year and bring a wealth of experience to the team. Laura Wrona started in two and saw action in four games while scoring her first career goal in the season opener.

Also expected to battle for playing time are sophomores Rebecca Snee, Michelle Paul, and Nicole Updegrove. The trio will look for continued growth in their second year with the program.

GOALKEEPERBloomsburg will have a new look in goal in 2012 as All-PSAC goalkeeper Frances Nicoletti graduated. Two goalkeepers return, each with a shot at the starting posi-tion. Sophomore Danielle Fiorelli and junior Ashley Hart have not seen much playing time thus far, but will look to impress in preseason camp.

“The goalkeepers have all had an incredible work ethic over the past couple of weeks,” Anderson said. “Ultimately it will come down to who we trust to come up with the big saves on a consistent basis.”

NEWCOMERSWith a talented group returnees, BU has brought in an eager incoming class who each bring a new skillset to the Huskies. This year’s newcomers include Erin Bechtold, Megan Carroll, Taylor Gerstenfield, Chrissy Hollan, Shelby Koch, Maureen Leis, Brooke Mohney, Alyssa Polonsky, Julia Rios, Ashley Sanchez, Stephanie Tuccio, Hailey Vonasek, and Tiff Yeiser.

“The newcomers on the team have offered a tremendous about of competition for the returners,” Anderson said. “You can see them developing every single day in practice and as they get comfortable with the faster pace of the college game. We expect several of them to get plenty of playing time.”

OVERALLWith a strong and experienced returning class, the Hus-kies stand a good shot at a third consecutive postseason appearance.

“I am feeling very confident in our ability to be successful after our pre-season camp,” Anderson said. “Right now, players are fighting to show that they deserve a starting spot, and it is great to see how much depth and competi-tiveness we have. We expect to see major contributions coming from the bench this year.”

Bloomsburg opens its season with a pair of home games at Sports Stadium. BU will face West Virginia Wesleyan on Friday August 31 at 6:00 P.M. in the team’s home opener, and Adelphi on Sunday, September 2 at 2:00 P.M.

Stephanie AndersonHead Coach

1st Season at Bloomsburg

Anderson begins her first season as the head coach of the women’s soccer program in 2012. She comes to Bloomsburg after serving as the assistant coach at Bucknell University last season. She previously served as a graduate assistant at Drury University in Mis-souri and as an assistant at her alma mater, Nebraska Wesleyan University.

During her time as a player at Nebraska Wesleyan, Anderson played in all 73 games in four seasons, starting all but four. She helped her team achieve an overall record of 50-18-5 (.719) as a player, including back-to-back Great Plains Athletic Conference regular season titles in 2005 and 2006. NWU put together a 26-matches home winning streak (23-0-3), which was the second longest active streak in Division III women’s soccer.

She ranked ninth all-time in career goals with 32, was a three-time all-conference selection and earned four letters for the Prairie Wolves. As a sophomore she was named offensive MVP and received the honor again as a senior, when she was also named team MVP.

Anderson, who majored in psychology at Nebraska Wesleyan, earned a master’s degree in organizational leadership and change at Drury. She holds a National United States Soccer Federation “D” License and has taken part in both the NCAA Leadership Sympo-sium and the NCAA Women’s Coaching Academy.
