The past year has definitely been an interesting year for both bankers and the customers we serve. However, to the prudent and informed individual, the challenges also presented great business opportunities. The real chal- lenge is being knowledgeable and capable of taking action when presented with those opportu- nities. First, our customers have seen the prices on their commodities swing almost four dollars throughout the marketing year, mostly to the downside. However, cattle prices are strong and coupled with decreased feed costs, the cattle industry is looking at a strong year. Additionally, we continue to see elevated land prices. This has become even more complicated as commodity prices have dropped. We continue to experience unique times in agriculture as mineral activity has sparked some "boom" times in certain regions of Kansas along with the continued wind energy developments spinning on more and more horizons. This has impacted land values as well as local economies. Finally, the uncertainty we face with Congress’ struggle to adopt a Farm Bill and the legislative environment in Washington, D.C. has everyone scratching their heads. We all want to know what programs will be funded and to what amount. Closely related, bankers and borrowers alike are asking when interest rates will begin to rise. All of these issues will have an im- mediate and direct impact on our customers. I know all of you are well aware of these and other issues facing our industry in 2014. I’m happy to report that your KAB Division Board is finalizing plans for the 2014 Kansas Ag Bankers Conference scheduled for March 12- 13 of next year. The 2013 conference was a huge success with 200 bankers in attendance. We hope you are planning to attend the 2014 conference as we have a packed list of topics to discuss and nationally-recognized speakers to deliver their thoughts. Lastly, I would like to give all bankers a little insight into one of the challenges/battles that the KBA’s Board of Di- rectors, KBA’s State Affairs Committee, and the KAB Division have embarked on this year. The KAB Division has dedicated resources to help support KBA’s legislative efforts to repeal the Mortgage Registration Tax currently in place in Kansas. Kansas is one of only nine states that levies this tax and only one of our bordering states are im- poses such a tax and at a much lower rate. Thus, a person living near the state border is given a disincentive to purchase real estate in Kansas vs. a neighboring state due to the additional tax levied when funds are to be bor- rowed from a commercial bank. This puts our borrowers, and consequently our banks, at a definite disadvantage as compared to borrowing from the government-sponsored Farm Credit System. Your KAB Division Board is committed to helping level the playing field for tax-paying Kansas banks and their valuable customers. I encour- age you to help spread the word to your legislative representatives as Doug and Kathy take our case to the Kan- sas legislature in 2014. Please review this annual report which reflects our dedication to all issues facing ag banks in 2014. As you con- sider renewing your membership, rest assured we take seriously the responsibility of promoting agriculture while strengthening and encouraging ag banks and ag bankers across the state of Kansas. With your continued sup- port we will accomplish these goals and enjoy success together. Thank you in advance for your consideration and support.

Mission Statement:

Dedicated to Supporting, Enhancing and Promoting the

Agricultural Banking Industry in Kansas

A Message from Kansas Ag Bankers Division President Shan Hanes

Speaking for the entire Board of Directors for KBA’s - Kansas Ag Bankers Division, I'd like to

wish everyone a happy and enjoyable holiday season. The past year has definitely been an

interesting year for both bankers and the customers we serve. However, to the prudent and

informed individual, the challenges also presented great business opportunities. The real chal-

lenge is being knowledgeable and capable of taking action when presented with those opportu-

nities.

First, our customers have seen the prices on their commodities swing almost four dollars

throughout the marketing year, mostly to the downside. However, cattle prices are strong and

coupled with decreased feed costs, the cattle industry is looking at a strong year. Additionally,

we continue to see elevated land prices. This has become even more complicated as commodity prices have

dropped. We continue to experience unique times in agriculture as mineral activity has sparked some "boom"

times in certain regions of Kansas along with the continued wind energy developments spinning on more and

more horizons. This has impacted land values as well as local economies. Finally, the uncertainty we face with

Congress’ struggle to adopt a Farm Bill and the legislative environment in Washington, D.C. has everyone

scratching their heads. We all want to know what programs will be funded and to what amount. Closely related,

bankers and borrowers alike are asking when interest rates will begin to rise. All of these issues will have an im-

mediate and direct impact on our customers.

I know all of you are well aware of these and other issues facing our industry in 2014. I’m happy to report that

your KAB Division Board is finalizing plans for the 2014 Kansas Ag Bankers Conference scheduled for March 12-

13 of next year. The 2013 conference was a huge success with 200 bankers in attendance. We hope you are

planning to attend the 2014 conference as we have a packed list of topics to discuss and nationally-recognized

speakers to deliver their thoughts.

Lastly, I would like to give all bankers a little insight into one of the challenges/battles that the KBA’s Board of Di-

rectors, KBA’s State Affairs Committee, and the KAB Division have embarked on this year. The KAB Division has

dedicated resources to help support KBA’s legislative efforts to repeal the Mortgage Registration Tax currently in

place in Kansas. Kansas is one of only nine states that levies this tax and only one of our bordering states are im-

poses such a tax and at a much lower rate. Thus, a person living near the state border is given a disincentive to

purchase real estate in Kansas vs. a neighboring state due to the additional tax levied when funds are to be bor-

rowed from a commercial bank. This puts our borrowers, and consequently our banks, at a definite disadvantage

as compared to borrowing from the government-sponsored Farm Credit System. Your KAB Division Board is

committed to helping level the playing field for tax-paying Kansas banks and their valuable customers. I encour-

age you to help spread the word to your legislative representatives as Doug and Kathy take our case to the Kan-

sas legislature in 2014.

Please review this annual report which reflects our dedication to all issues facing ag banks in 2014. As you con-

sider renewing your membership, rest assured we take seriously the responsibility of promoting agriculture while

strengthening and encouraging ag banks and ag bankers across the state of Kansas. With your continued sup-

port we will accomplish these goals and enjoy success together. Thank you in advance for your consideration and

support.

2013 KAB Conference Draws 200 Ag

200 Ag lenders converged on Kansas State University’s Alumni Center for the 2013 Kansas Ag Bankers Confer-ence held in Manhattan on March 13th & 14th. Attendees benefitted from a host of agriculture and banking indus-try experts that showcased the latest trends and chal-lenges facing the agricultural sector. Virginia Tech’s Dr. David Kohl kicked-off the first day of the conference with tips for Managing in the Great Agricultural Economic Su-per-Cycle. Day one of the conference also featured an update on oil and gas production by David Newell with the Kansas Geological Survey and a report on federal monetary policy’s impact on the ag sector by Kansas State University’s Dr. Brian Briggeman.

Day two of the conference included the annual meeting for KBA’s – Kansas Ag Bankers Division, and the formal election of Shan Hanes, president of First National Bank of Elkhart, as the Division’s president for the coming year. Day two also featured livestock and grain market updates by CattleFax’s Randy Blach and Advance Market Con-cepts’ Darrell Holaday. Jason Henderson with the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City closed out the second day of the conference with a discussion on why this agricultural boom is different. Special thanks to the many sponsors that helped make the 2013 Kansas Ag Bankers Confer-ence a huge success!

Ray Purdy Recognized with Kansas Ag

Bankers Division’s 2013 Pioneer Award

During the 2013 annual meeting of KBA’s Kansas Ag Bankers Division, Ray Purdy of Garden City was named the recipient of the 2013 Pioneer Award. The Pioneer Award is presented to an agricultural banker that exem-plifies the best in agricultural lending by continually bringing credit to his profession and the entire agricultur-al banking community.

In November 1996 he accepted a position with Home National Bank of Arkan-sas City to open a branch in Garden City where he served as Branch President. In November 2005, a group of local investors purchased the branch and it was merged into American State Bank & Trust Company where Ray served as Market President. He retired from American State Bank & Trust Company on December 31, 2010.

Investing in the Future of Agriculture

KAB Division Banks on FFA Students’ Futures

Last spring, the KBA—Kansas Ag Bankers Division once again served as the primary sponsor for the Kansas FFA/4-H Career Show held in Manhattan on May 29th. This annual event was attended by more than 2,000 students from across Kansas and coincided with the annual convention for the Kansas FFA organization. The division also sponsored a delegate luncheon featuring the top two FFA student-leaders from 162 local FFA chapters. KAB Division Vice President Troy Soukup provided a keynote address during the luncheon and highlighted career opportunities in Kan-sas banking.

KAB Division Contributions Focus on Promoting Agriculture

Promoting the important role of agriculture and rural communities contin-ues to be a top priority for the Kansas Ag Bankers Division Board of Direc-tors. During the past year, the KAB Division has invested $14,000 toward agriculture/rural leadership development programs. In addition to FFA and 4-H, the KAB Division has also lent support to the Kansas Ag Rural Leader-ship (KARL) program, the Kansas Foundation for Agriculture in the Class-room (KFAC), Kansas PRIDE, Inc., the Kansas Water Congress and the Gov-ernor’s Conference on Water Policy.

Rock Springs Bankers Cottage & 4-H Leaders Conference Supported

During the past year, the KBA—Kansas Ag Bankers Division contin-ued its long-running support of 4-H by helping to underwrite the cost of sending Kansas youth delegates to the 2013 National 4-H Conference. Financial support from the KAB Division also helped maintain the Bankers Cottage located at Rock Springs Ranch. The Bankers Cottage is one of the premier housing facilities at the ranch, which is utilized annually by thousands of Kansas youth in-volved with 4-H, FFA, and other youth leadership programs. Pic-tured at left is the 2013 National 4-H Conference delegation.
