Asfarmersgettheirmachineryready,itisimportanttheydon’tforgetaboutroutinemaintenanceonthemselves.OnMarch5thAnnieJeffreyHealthCenterwillbeofferingamini-SpringHealthFairtoal-lowfarmersandanyoneelsewhomissedtheOctoberhealthfairtheopportunitytogetbloodworkandotherhealthscreens.Thissmallerfairwilloffermanyofthebeneficial lab screenings as the larger Oc-toberhealthfair,butwillbeheldatatimewhichismoreconvenientfortheareafarmerswhocouldnotattendthefallfair.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month olorectalcancer–cancerofthe colonorrectum–isthesecondlead-ingcauseofcancer-relateddeathsintheUnitedStatesforbothmenandwomencombined.Despitethefactthatitishighlypreventable,eachyeartherearesomanynewcasesofcolorectalcancerdiagnosed.

Therearewaystopreventcolorectalcan-cer.Screeningtestsarethemosteffectivewaytopreventcolorectalcancerordetectitinitsearliest,mostcurablestages.Mostcasesofthediseasebeginasnon-cancerouspolyps–grape-likegrowthsintheliningofthecolonandrectum.Thesepolypscanbecomecancerous.Becausethereareoftennosymptomsrelatedtopolyps,itisveryimportanttobescreened.

Doctorsrecommendthateveryoneshouldbescreenedforcoloncancerwhentheyturn50-oryoungerifaparent,sibling,orchildhasbeendiagnosedwithcoloncancer-andatleastonceeverytenyearsafterthat.Un-fortunately,residentslivinginourareaofNebraskahavehigherratesofcoloncancer
