What about the Western medicine aspect?Board certified in Internal Medicine in 1995, I stand on a firm foundation of Western medi-cine, and will make sure that that level of health is addressed properly. Acupuncture allows me to then go deeper and be even more effective.

For 18 years, Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital’s Community Cancer Center has offered a full range of cancer services close to home. In addition to advanced diagnostics, surgery, medical oncology and radiation, SNMH Cancer Center offers: cancer screenings, prog-nostic testing, weekly cancer conferences where cases are confidentially discussed with allied health professionals, free nutritional counseling, free counseling with an oncology social worker or nurse navigator, spiritual care, counseling for caregivers and a myriad of support groups.

Our physicians use a team approach to coordinate the best possible treatment options with regional specialists to address the needs of patients with rare cancers.

Only one out of six hospitals in America are accredited by the Commission on Cancer. Ninety percent of cancer patients seek out these centers for treatment. Services offered: Women’s Imaging Services including screening and diagnostic mammography, Breast Ultrasound, Breast MRI and Stereotactic procedures. The SNMH Women’s Imaging Center offers comprehensive breast imaging services. We are the only center in the region using all available methods to detect and diagnosis breast cancer including MRI and MRI guided biopsies. Our Nurse Navigators are specialists in providing information, education and ongoing support for women in our community. We also serve as a resource in the community for questions about breast health and act as a liaison for other community services. We have a variety of programs to assist with free and reduced cost services.

Is there a difference between SNMH WIC and other centers not associated with a Hospital? We offer a comprehensive array of services that allow for seamless flow in the process. This allows our patients to move within the system to for needed services without lengthy refer-rals and transfers.

How soon can I get in? Appointments available within seven days and results are reported within one-two days. Often we accommodate same day requests. We also offer Saturday appointments each month and we hold a late even event several times per year.

What happens if I have a positive test? One of our specially trained navigators will work with you each step of the way providing education, support and act as a single point of contact for resources.

Join us for a relaxed evening of music, massage and appetizers while taking care of your annual mammogram screening. Yearly mammograms are recommended for women starting at age 40.

There is more to Pilates than just the mat!

While most people have heard of Pilates mat classes, there is more to Pilates than just the mat! Joseph Pilates developed his system of physical fitness utilizing equipment that is spring loaded to not only offer resistance through a full range of motion for movements that are easy to build strength, but to offer assistance for movements that we would like to do but are difficult. The idea of “assistance for movements that we would like to do but are difficult” in conjunction with attention to proper body alignment is what attracts people who have been unsuccessful with traditional exercise programs, as well as Physical Thera-pists to Pilates. Pilates, originally called body contrology, is a system to restore balance to the body, which typically becomes imbalanced through our daily habits of movement (or lack there of).

“Each person is unique in their needs for specific movements to balance their body, one size does not fit all,” says Roxanna Cohen P.T., PMA Certified Pilates Teacher and owner of The Pilates Place.

Historically, a client would see Mr. Pilates for an assessment and receive instruction specific for their individual needs in a one on one situation. As they learned their exercises and became more proficient on the equipment, they would progress to a group setting utilizing the equipment in the studio and performing mat exercises at home as a supplement. This system expedited creating balance in the body and the ability to move with grace and ease. One of Mr. Pilates most famous quote is “Contrology develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind and elevates the spirit.”

The Pilates Place in downtown Grass Valley is a friendly, professionally staffed, state-of-the-art Pilates studio offering private sessions, group mat, reformer and chair classes for fitness and rehabilitation. All of the instructors are comprehensively trained to perform a fitness assessment and utilize all Pilates equipment to uniformly develop the body, correct wrong postures and restore physical vitality.

Mission Statement:Hospice of the Foothills affirms life and promotes dignity at the end-of-life by provid-ing professional, comprehensive, and compassionate care to the patients, their loved ones, and the community.

What programs and services does Hospice of the foothills provide?We offer a Medicare certified hospice program for those with a life limiting illness and a prognosis of six months or less. Patient and family centered professional compassionate care includes clinical services, pain and symptom management, personal care, counseling and volunteer support. Our Compassionate Care Home is a licensed Congregate Living Health Facility that offers residential palliative (support and comfort) care including hospice services in a safe, homelike setting.

Hospice of the Foothills also offers advanced care planning, bereavement services, and grief support to the community. Our no cost program, Transitions, provides supportive care and resource coordination for those with a prognosis of one year or less.

Why should i consider Hospice of the foothills?Families served by Hospice of the Foothills would recommend our care to others. Hospice of the Foothills, a community based nonprofit, has provided end-of-life care for 34 years serving over 500 families annually. We are the only hospice in our community providing Medicare certified In-patient care directly. Therefore, the families we serve are more broadly supported in all care settings that include skilled nursing facilities, residential care facilities and most often in the patient’s or family’s own home.

Our professional care team of hospice nurses, counselors and aides also includes the patient’s personal physician, our Medical Director and team physician who are board certified in hospice and palliative medicine. Our bereavement support groups are offered to anyone in the community grieving a loss – whether or not they have been served by Hospice of the Foothills. Our community outreach team provides education on a variety of healthcare topics including advanced care planning and hospice care and services.

Psychotherapy is a very personal experience. Together (patient and therapist) we gain the trust to peel the layers of the “false self” away revealing the true, authentic self. I am trained to work with traumatic experiences from early child-hood to the present, grief and loss, medical illnesses, female issues, male issues, mood disorders, suicide, depression, anxiety, PTSD, ADHD, relationship issues, gay and lesbian issues, infertility, sex abuse, panic disorder, and a host of other disorders.

Perhaps different from other psychotherapists, I help the patient uncover the “uncon-scious.” Like the moon with its unseen side, we as individuals have an unseen side, the unconscious. And like the moon, this unseen side makes us whole. When we uncover our unconscious, we also understand and are able to change our behavior since these uncon-scious feelings motivate our behavior without us realizing it.

Together we will examine these patterns that the patient finds distressing and long stand-ing. I do not give advise, rather I help the patient find the advise within him/herself.

I treat children of all ages, adolescents, adults of all ages, and couples. The length of treat-ment is a decision made by both of us and depends of the presenting issues. I work closely with medical doctors if medicine is necessary. Sessions are 50 minutes.

I have a PhD in Clinical Psychology; however, my license in California is in Marriage and Family Therapy. I moved to Nevada City eight and a half years ago from Santa Fe, NM, where I had a practice for fifteen years. I have a commentary on KVMR every Mon-day night at 6:25 p.m. I talk about psychological issues.

I accept only a few insurance plans, and I do provide a sliding scale for those in need. I am located in Nevada City and have patients from Marysville, Yuba City, Auburn, Roseville, Woodland, and even Sacramento.

Good Medicine, Close-byA few years ago, we began an aggressive campaign to become the very best we could be. And that didn’t just mean expansion. Rideout Health provides state-of-the-art facilities and services for both inpatient and outpatient treatment. Rideout’s Emergency Department is a certified Level III Trauma and STEMI-receiving center, able to handle the most serious forms of heart attacks, and serves patients from five counties.
