There is still much uncertainty in the business environment. Our planning for the future of our businesses can seem like it’s done in the dark, without any real backup for why we’re making the decisions we do. It’s as if you are walking along a tightrope, blindfolded, without a net. The theme for this year’s Industry Summit—“Working Without a Net?”—refl ects how, despite all of the communications bombarding us daily, it takes collaboration to fi nd the right information to move your company forward. Fortunately for those in the power transmission/motion control distribution channel, the PTDA Industry Summit offers you a support net through the extensive opportunities to discuss business issues and develop innovative solutions.

On average, more than 550 delegates—the industry’s top executives representing 240 companies—will network and conduct business at this year’s Industry Summit. In addition to being a cost-effi cient and powerful connection hub, the emphasis on current events and economic trends can provide you with the net you need to be more secure in your plans for your business moving into 2014 and beyond.

If you’re “Working Without a Net?,” come to the Industry Summit to fi nd solid ground.

Register Today!

PRINC IPLES OF SALES GREATNESSJeffrey GitomerAuthor, Presenter, Trainer

Author of The Little Red Book of Selling, among many books, Jeffrey Gitomer is well-known around the world for his “blustery” style and no-nonsense approach to sales. He is the founder and president of TrainOne, Inc., which provides classroom and online training in sales, customer loyalty, and personal development.

• The difference between selling a commodity and selling value

• How to differentiate from your competition

• How to create real, long lasting relationships

• Using the voice of your customer as an additional sales person

• Staying in touch (and top of mind) with your customers on a weekly basis

• Becoming an expert on safety in the workplace

• How to overcome price objections

MARKET ING S TRATEGY AND TACT ICS FOR UNCERTA IN T IMESJonathan Bein, Ph. D., Managing Partner, Real Results Marketing

The most successful distributors and manufacturers expect marketing to be a profi t center. Marketing does more than create collateral; it systematically generates new customers and increases margin. In this workshop, you will learn practical approaches for marketing that generate profi table sales—impact, not just noise—when business conditions are uncertain. Specifi c topics include:

• How to grow wallet-share and margins with existing customers through cross selling and retaining your best customers

• How to use analytics to acquire new customers and why on-boarding new customers is the essential fi rst move

• Effective use of e-commerce, direct response marketing and pro-active inside sales as a complement to fi eld sales

• Why most “me too” messaging and positioning is wasted, and what marketing can do to make you stand out in a crowd

• Why pricing is essential to both short-term and sustainable long-term bottom line profi ts and what are the essential elements of a great pricing strategy

THE MARKET-DR I V EN SALES FORCESteve Deist, Partner, Indian River Consulting Group

Are you a top executive or sales manager asking yourself: “How can I get my sales group to just do what I want them to do?” The answer is usually not more training, new iPads with CRM software, or tweaks to the commission plan. The right approach is to deploy your sales and marketing resources strategically, based on market opportunities. This session will show the steps you can take to move from a diffuse, self-directed sales force to one that is management-directed and market-driven.

Two forces are driving a fundamental rethink in distributor sales. First, there is the “push” of grim market realities. In our “new normal” economy, companies face slowing or declining revenue, high selling expenses and a tenured sales force that is resistant to change. The second force is the “pull” of new technology. Distributors’ customers are taking control of the sales process and information fl ow. They are embracing social, local and mobile technologies (known collectively as “SoLoMo” by the digerati). This transformation opens new doors for distributors in areas such as customer acquisition and development, lower cost sales channels and optimizing service delivery.

This session will explain these twin forces and help you draw important implications for your own organization. It is based on extensive real world experience of what works—and what doesn’t—in distribution sales organizations.

ATTRACT THE BEST, REPEL THE REST: How to Create a Magnetic CultureMel Kleiman, President, Humetrics

As counterintuitive as it may seem, when unemployment soars, recruiting top notch employees at every level is more of a challenge because desperate applicants do desperate things and star employees quit looking for jobs.

Rather than trying to convince great employees that your company is a great place to work, it is by far easier to hire great employees who want to come to work for you. And the best way to get them to do that is to create a magnetic culture. Shape a positive work environment today, and you’ll be able to keep the good employees you have as well as attract and hire even more just like them with ease.

Key learning outcomes include:

• How to create a magnetic culture that attracts the best and repels the rest

• Why you need to put employees fi rst and clients second

• The fi ve keys to becoming an “employer of choice”

• How to make the best hiring decisions

• The seven “R’s” and one “C” of employee engagement

The material in this workshop is presented under an agreement with Mel Kleiman who holds the copyright to the material.

MD- IDEX : MANUFACTURER-D I S TR IBUTOR ID EA EXCHANGEIt takes a circus-worthy balancing act to effectively manage your relationships with your channel partners. MD-IDEX provides you with four hours of dedicated time to meet specifi cally with top-level distributor and manufacturer executives to engage in focused, one-on-one discussions. Consistently rated as the best feature of the Industry Summit, MD-IDEX is a time- and cost-effective opportunity to meet face-to-face with the management staff of many potential and current business partners to discuss new product lines, market information and opportunities, and other topics of mutual interest.

The structure of MD-IDEX blends scheduled appointments and open unscheduled time, giving all participants an opportunity to get business done at the Industry Summit.

HOW DOES I T WORK?PTDA manufacturer members reserve booths in advance of the event. Using the online MD-IDEX Appointment Scheduler, both distributor and exhibiting manufacturer members can set con-fi rmed meetings. Distributors have the ability to schedule up to six 20-minute appointments with exhibiting manufacturers, while three 20-minute time slots are reserved for exhibiting manufacturers to make appointments with distributor companies attending the Industry Summit.

New for 2013: Exhibiting manufacturers may also schedule appointments in any of the distributor’s six time slots not already reserved.

In addition to these scheduled appointment times, three 20-minute time slots are unscheduled open time for distributors wishing for a less formal opportunity to connect with suppliers.

D I S TR IBUTOR FORUM AND MANUFACTURER FORUMEach forum brings together peers to talk about some of the toughest issues facing the power transmission/motion control distribution channel. The same three topics will be discussed at each forum and then used to create an article appearing in the January 2014 issue of Transmissions. Come join the discussion.

• Where are manufacturers and distributors investing in technology to improve their marketing efforts? How is on-line content being developed and shared between channel partners and with customers?

• What makes a successful joint sales call? When is it okay for a manufacturer to visit accounts handled by distribution on a direct basis?

• At the Forums during the 2012 Industry Summit, manufacturers and distributors agreed that customers value the “business solution” over brand and product. How can manufacturers and distributors work together to identify customers’ issues and create solutions within the channel to meet the customer’s needs?

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 47:00 TO 9:00 P.M.

PTDA D INEAROUNDNew for 2013! Enjoy networking in a delicious way with the PTDA DineAround. PTDA will set up Dutch treat pairing dinners at restaurants in the Coachella Valley. There will be different cuisines and price points to choose from. Examples of a cuisine and its pairing could be Mexican & tequila, Italian & wine, Japanese & saké or Belgian & beer. How can distributors make the most of MD-IDEX?1. Before you schedule meetings with PTDA manufacturer

members who have reserved a booth in MD-IDEX, visit www.ptda.org/MDIDEXDemo to view a demonstration of the scheduling process.

2. In early August, PTDA will e-mail you a directory of MD-IDEX exhibitors. Review the list and determine which manufacturers you want to meet.

3. Online scheduling for distributors will begin at 10:00 a.m. CDT on August 9, 2013, and will be open through August 30, 2013. Appointments are booked on a fi rst-come, fi rst-served basis. Book early as many slots go within minutes of the opening of online scheduling.

4. New! Get early appointment scheduling privileges when you recruit two or more distributor companies to join PTDA.

5. Manufacturers are also given the opportunity to schedule appointments with you. There are three appointment time slots reserved for manufacturers to schedule with your company. New for 2013: Exhibiting manufacturers will have the opportunity to schedule appointments with your company in any time slot not already reserved by you (unless you opt out of this option). Check your online appointment schedule after September 18 to see if any exhibiting manufacturers scheduled an appointment with you.

6. Prepare, prepare, prepare! Just as you would for any business or sales meeting, research the companies you will be meeting with and develop an agenda. Arrive at the manufacturer’s booth at your appointment time prepared for substantial discussions with executives who have national decision-making authority.

7. Walk the fl oor during open time slots. Visit a manufacturer whose product is new to you. Establishing relationships with potential suppliers for products you do not currently carry can help you be prepared for new customer opportunities.

How can manufacturers make the most of MD-IDEX?1. Reserve your booth space by June 28! You must reserve

a booth in MD-IDEX in order to use the online appointment scheduler and to hold meetings during MD-IDEX. To reserve your booth, contact PTDA at +1.312.516.2100 or e-mail Brenda Holt at [email protected]. Space is limited: Reserving early ensures best placement and inclusion in the promotions to distributors in advance of MD-IDEX.

2. Visit www.ptda.org/MDIDEXDemo to view a demonstration of the scheduling process in advance of the September 19 opening date of the online scheduler. Review the list of registered distributors (available on PTDA’s website in early August) to determine who you’d like to meet with that hasn’t already scheduled an appointment with you.

3. Online scheduling for exhibiting manufacturers will begin at 10:00 a.m. CDT on September 4, 2013, and will be open through September 18, 2013. Appointments are booked on a fi rst-come, fi rst-served basis. Exhibiting manufacturers have three time slots dedicated to book with distributors. New for 2013: As an exhibitor, you will have the opportunity to schedule appointments in any time slot not already booked by the distributor (with distributors not opting out of this option). Book early as many slots go within minutes of the opening of online scheduling.

4. New! Get early appointment scheduling privileges when you recruit two or more distributor companies to join PTDA.

5. Prepare, prepare, prepare! Just as you would for any business or sales meeting, research the companies you will be meeting with and develop an agenda.

6. Connect with the companies you are meeting with prior to your appointment. Drop a note or send an e-mail message prior to the meeting to reinforce your business message.

7. Staff your booth for both open time and scheduled appointments.

8. Prepare an appropriate follow-up after each meeting to ensure your action items are completed and the desired outcomes are achieved.

PTDA has negotiated an optional resort fee of $15 + tax per day (a 45 percent discount). This fee includes self-parking, high speed Internet access, local phone calls, use of Spa Fitness center and 18 hole putting course, lawn games and golf bag storage.

Did you know PTDA is required to guarantee a minimum number of room nights to get this great rate and have use of the meeting room and exhibit space at no charge. If the minimum is not met, PTDA must pay the hotel an attrition fee. Support your association and make the Industry Summit possible by booking rooms in the PTDA room block.
