Barkley enters her seventh season

as head coach of the Meredith

College volleyball team. Eight of Bar-

kley’s players earned All-Conference

recognition since Meredith joined the

USA South in 2007, including the

Libero of the Year in 2008.

The Avenging Angels completed

the 2012 season in a three-way tie

for sixth and earned one of eight

coveted spots in the USA South

Conference tournament.

During the 2011 season the Meredith volleyball team earned an overall

winning record for the first time since 2003 and proved to be a strong

competitor in the USA South Athletic Conference as the program

continues to move up in conference standings.

Formerly an assistant coach at N.C. State University from 2004-05,

Barkley trained defensive systems and serving strategy while assist-

ing with all aspects of this ACC team. In addition, Barkley coordinated

team travel, support staff, special events, video scouting systems and

summer camps.

Barkley’s college coaching career also includes time as assistant

coach at Lynn University and recruiting coordinator at her alma mater,

Elon University. During her time at Elon, she signed several recruits

who went on to earn all-conference honors. She finished up her time

at Elon in 2003 as interim head coach.

As a four-year collegiate letter winner at Elon University, Barkley was

named team captain and MVP. For her performance as an outside

hitter, she was named to Elon’s 1,000 Digs and 1,000 Kills Club.

Barkley earned a Bachelor of Science in Leisure/Sport Management

from Elon in 1999.

In addition to running the volleyball program, Barkley is also the

advisor for Meredith’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee and the

Chair of the annual Athletics Golf Tournament.

Outside of her duties at Meredith, Barkley works with local youth

volleyball programs including the NC High Performance program.

During the summers she has worked volleyball camps with such

programs as UNC, NC State, Duke, Elon, Furman and Emory. She

also hosts summer volleyball camps at Meredith.

mereDith College athletiCs programthe Division iii eXperienCe

Meredith athletics teams participate in Division III of the National Col-

legiate Athletic Association. Division III athletics offers student-athletes

the opportunity to become well-rounded individuals who successfully

integrate athletics and academics while experiencing all aspects of

college life. Student-athletes who compete at this level can receive aca-

demic and need-based financial assistance. The athletic department is

staffed and funded like any other department in the College.

aCaDemiCs

Meredith College’s commitment to academics is exemplified by its

athletics teams. Each year, the USA South Athletic Conference recog-

nizes its student-athletes’ hard work in the classroom by naming an

Academic All-Conference team. In 2013, 54 Meredith students were

named to the team, eight of whom earned a perfect 4.0 GPA. The Mer-

edith athletics program further recognizes student-athletes who earn

a 3.5 cumulative GPA as members of the Athletics Director’s Club and

those who earn a perfect 4.0 GPA with the Vice-President’s Scholar-

Athlete Award.

The athletic training staff provides excellent care for student-athletes.

The athletic training support staff consists of head athletic trainer,

Sharon Malley, and Assistant Athletic Trainer Heidi Roach. Dr. Doug

Martini of Cary Orthopedic serves as the program’s team physician. In

addition, Meredith College serves as a clinical site for the UNC-Chapel

Hill Undergraduate Athletic Training Program. Services and equipment

provided include a whirlpool, hydrocollator, ultrasound, injury ice and

electrical stimulation.

Community serviCe

Members from each team are elected to the Student Athlete Advisory

Committee that organizes support for each sport and also coordinates

community service. Past volunteer work includes Special Olympics

of Wake County, Habitat for Humanity, Service Raleigh, and the USA

South Athletic Conference’s Cans Across the Conference and Pennies

for a Purpose.
