Divine Wisdom, present in the person of Jesus,

connues to teach those who would listen. If God, the

householder, sows only good seed why is it that there

are such mixed results?

The parable in today’s Gospel makes two points: firstly

that an enemy is responsible for the weeds, not the

householder; secondly that the householder will deal

with these weeds at the harvest me.

It is important for us to read this parable in its context.

Jesus is dealing with why so many do not respond to

his teaching, for his ministry received a very mixed

response. In the symbolism of the parable, the

Kingdom of God that Jesus announces is met by

vigorous opposion from the powers of evil. This is

the reality in Jesus’ me, the reality faced by

Mahew’s community and it connues to be our

reality.

The voice of the Gospel connues to struggle to be

heard in our present society. Other values are

presented as off ering a beer way of life: if we allow

asylum seekers in, our ‘white Australian’ quality of life

may change, or if we stop embryonic research we may

lose our sciensts and possible cures for many

illnesses.

With many of the complex issues we face it is not easy

to discern the weeds from the wheat. On the twoissues named above good people of faith hold

diff erent views.

Today’s parable seems to suggest that the servants

need to live with both the wheat and the weeds and

leave the task of judgement to God. Jesus off ers this

teaching to console and encourage his followers.

Our task, as servants, is to sow goodness and the

Gospel. The task of destroying evil belongs to God,

and to God alone.

Holy Communion has a fuller form as a sign when it

takes place under both kinds. For in this form the sign

of the Eucharisc banquet is more clearly evident and

clearer expression is given to the divine will by which

the new and eternal Covenant is rafied in the Bloodof the Lord, as also the connecon between the

Eucharisc banquet and the eschatological banquet in

the Kingdom of the Father.

Homily by Richard Leonard SJToday’s Gospel gives us both a parable and then an

interpretaon of that parable. I'm very grateful for

this paern in the 13th chapter of Mahew's Gospel.

It indicates to us that not everything that Jesus says

should be taken literally. Clearly the disciples were

somemes confused and needed some private

coaching to bring them up to speed with what Jesus

was on about.

As much as I respect the faith of our fundamentalist

Chrisan brothers and sisters, it is at this point, on the

way we interpret the Scriptures, that we cannot

agree. The catholic community has always taken the

process outlined in Mahew’s gospel very seriously.

We have always held that the full richness of the

scriptures needs careful study and tested

interpretaons.

Unfortunately, in previous generaons the anxietyover people's private interpretaons of the scriptures

led Catholics to be suspicious of the Bible and the

private reading of it. To read the Bible was oen seen

as a ‘very protestant thing to do’. Given that Jesus,

Mary, the apostles and the disciples are all recorded in

the New Testament as reading, meditang on, or

hearing the scriptures, nothing could be further from

the truth. To be a Chrisan is to ponder the Word of

God.

That’s why the Second Vacan Council encouraged usall to return to regular private reflecon on the Bible.

We believe that the whole Church has the task to

discern where the Word of God is leading us. To help

this discernment, it’s scholars who pay great aenon

to the history and the literary, textual and cultural

issues in and around the Bible have always aided the

catholic community. They look at how various

interpretaons and approaches of the Scriptures have

helped or hindered the Church over the centuries. We

place great weight on the 'here and now' of the faithcommunity who listens to the Word of God and lives it

out.

We hold, however, that the scriptures are not books

of facts, though they contain historical informaon.

The Word of God is for us the pathway to faith, a

series of revealed and inspired portraits of God and a

disllaon of God's saving love for us and our

response to him.© Richard Leonard SJ.

An inial meeng of the Parish Grief Support Group

took place on Saturday 28th June, facilitated by

Deacon Marn Johnson, a Senior Lecturer in

Psychology at the University of Newcastle. The next

meeng is planned for 26th July, again facilitated by

Deacon Marn, to connue the journey of

establishing this group in the life of the Parish.

The Parish Grief Support Group will meet on a regular

basis to support members through prayer, sharing,

listening, understanding and being there for one

another. Sharing with other people can help reduce

the sense of isolaon and aloneness that comes with

grief and can be of great benefit to anyone dealing

with their grief.

An invitaon to be part of the Parish Grief Support

Groups is extended to men and women of the Parish

who have lost a spouse through death, divorce ordemena (or any other situaon).

If you would simply like more informaon, please

speak directly with Fr Andrew either in person or via

his mobile (0412 405 671).

So that we might receive Communion in a ‘fit and

proper’ way, please be aware of the following:

When we process forward to receive Communion,

we are asked to adopt a common and unified

gesture of reverence before doing so. In Australia

that gesture is a bow   of the head and shoulders

(GIRM, 160). Any other form of reverence, including

a genu fl ec on, is no longer permi  ed, and you are

asked to refrain from doing so.

When the minister of communion presents the

Host or Chalice to you, they say “The Body of

Christ” or “The Blood of Christ”. Please ensure that

you respond with “Amen”.

Communion by ‘self ‐inncon’ (‘self ‐dipping’) is

never permied, since we receive Communion and

never take  Communion. Please refrain from this

inappropriate acon.

We regret that we do not have the physical

facilies to off er communion while kneeling, and

respec ully ask you to refrain from kneeling to

receive Communion while part of the procession,

since this is contrary to the nature of the

Communion procession itself. Your cooperaon in

honouring this request is very much appreciated,

and we thank you for your consideraon.
