Western Carolina’s James Sinclair nearly averaged a double-double last week as the senior scored 19.5 points and pulled down 9.5 rebounds per game. The Savannah, Ga., native posted his second career double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds in a 76-72 loss to Samford. He followed that performance with 21 points and nine rebounds in a 73-70 win over Chattanooga, including a jumper with 35 second left to give the Catamounts a two-point lead (72-70). Sinclair is third in the league with 19.2 points per game.

Christen Cunningham, Samford, G

Samford’s Christen Cunningham has been named the CRONS Freshman of the Week for the fourth time this season. Cunningham averaged 11.5 points, 5.0 assists, 2.5 steals and 2.0 rebounds in a pair of wins last week for the Bulldogs. The freshman scored all 12 of his points in the second half of Thurs-day’s comeback win over Western Carolina (76-72). In Saturday’s 71-68 win at ETSU, Cunningham tallied 11 points, fi ve assists, four rebounds and a steal. He currently ranks third in the SoCon with 4.1 assists per game.

One-Possession GamesSouthern Conference teams have played 62 league games to date. Fourteen games (23 percent) have been decided by one possession or went into overtime.

• In 2014 the league had 17 of 88 (19 percent) conference games decided by one pos-session.• In 2013 the league had 30 of 108 (28 percent) conference games decided by one pos-session.• In 2012 the league had 32 of 108 (30 percent) conference games decided by one pos-session.

Athletes of the MonthWestern Carolina guard James Sinclair averaged 19.3 points and 5.7 rebounds in six No-vember games to help the Catamounts to a 3-3 mark. Sinclair opened the season with four straight 20-plus games, scoring 20 in a 10-point loss at Mississippi State to open the season. He followed that up with a career night in another close loss at an SEC opponent, scoring 31 points in an 80-74 setback at Alabama. The senior from Savannah, Ga., then led WCU to its fi rst win of the season with 25 points and nine rebounds against Hiwassee before capping his 20-point spurt with an even 20 and another nine boards in a double-overtime win at Oakland in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic. For the month, Sinclair was second in the SoCon in scoring and steals per game (2.2). He was the SoCon Player of the Week on Nov. 18.

Furman guard Stephen Croone averaged 20.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game for the Paladins in December, highlighted by a season-high 33 points in a Dec. 6 win over Samford. The Covington, Ga., junior scored in double digits in all seven games, eclipsing 20 points three times. In addition to the 33 points against the Bulldogs, Croone also notched 25 and 23 in road losses to Minnesota and TCU, respectively. He had a team-high eight rebounds in contests against Liberty and Florida Gulf Coast and added six boards and fi ve steals against Samford. Croone had at least three steals in fi ve games in the month. For the month, he shot an even 50 percent from the fl oor, going 39-for-78, and was 15-for-37 (40.5 percent) from 3-point range.

Chattanooga guard Casey Jones averaged 16.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game in Janu-ary, helping the Mocs to a 7-2 record, all in SoCon play. The junior from New Orleans, La., turned in four 20-point outings in the month and had 11 or more rebounds four times, as well. Jones opened the month with consecutive 20-plus efforts, scoring 20 points and pulling down 11 rebounds in a win over Furman before dropping 21 points with seven boards in a four-point loss to Wofford. He followed that with 18 points and 13 rebounds in a win over Western Carolina that started a fi ve-game winning streak for the Mocs. He narrowly missed another double-double with nine points and 11 boards in a win over ETSU but hit the game-winning 3-pointer from 25 feet to stun the Bucs in overtime. The junior had a monster game against Mercer, scoring a career-best 24 points and pulling down a career-high 15 rebounds in an overtime loss. He capped his month with 23 points and three blocked shots in a win over The Citadel. Jones shot 53.2 percent from the fl oor (58-for-109) in the month and was named the SoCon Player of the Week for games the fi nal week of January

Schedule AdjustmentWith ten teams in the SoCon, league teams will play an 18-game double-round robin confer-ence schedule. League teams played 18 conference games from 2007-13, but this season marks the fi rst time since the 1993-94 that SoCon teams will play a double-round robin sched-ule.

Postseason ExperienceFive Southern Conference teams participated in postseason play in 2013-14. Mercer and Wofford advanced to the NCAA tournament, while ETSU, Chattanooga and VMI participated in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason tournament.

Sudden ImpactUNCG’s Tevon Saddler was named the league’s Freshman of the Year by the conference’s coaches in 2014. Saddler became just the third Spartan to win the award, joining Jay Joseph (2001) and Kyle Hines (2005). Saddler was named the league’s Freshman of the week a season-high fi ve times last year.

Annual LeadersWofford limited its opponents to just 62.2 points per game last season. It was the third straight year the Terriers led the Southern Conference in scoring defense.

Chattanooga led the league in rebounding for the second time in the last four seasons. The Mocs averaged 37.4 rebounds per game in 2013-14 and were +1.8 in rebounding margin.

Making The GradeIn addition to achieving success on the court, SoCon men’s basketball teams boast impres-sive academic credentials. In the latest data released by the NCAA in June, Southern Con-ference men’s basketball teams posted an Academic Progress Rate (APR) of 966, 10 points higher than the national average of 956 for Division I men’s basketball programs. It was the sixth consecutive year that the SoCon average was higher than the national rate.

• The Southern Conference’s APR score of 966 in men’s basketball was the seventh-highest among all Division I conferences.• The NCAA released its Graduation Success Rate scores October 28. Southern Confer-ence men’s basketball earned a 83, topping the Division I average of 72.

Digital NetworkThe Southern Conference launched the SoCon Digital Network during the summer of 2014. All men’s and women’s basketball home games not selected for broadcast television will be available through the league’s digital platform, which is available on computers, smart-phones and tablets. Live games, on-demand content and features are all available at socondigitalnetwork.com.

Preseason HonorsWofford was picked to win the 2014-15 Southern Conference championship in preseason balloting conducted by the league’s head coaches. The Terriers return all fi ve starters and 11 lettermen from last season’s team that went 20-13 and earned a trip to the NCAA tournament.

• Chattanooga was picked second and earned two fi rst-place votes while ETSU was tabbed third. • Wofford’s Karl Cochran was named the league’s preseason Player of the Year and was joined on the preseason all-conference team by teammates Spencer Collins and Lee Skinner. Eight of the league’s ten teams had at least one player on the preseason all-conference team.

Conference TournamentThe 2015 Southern Conference Tournament presented by General Shale will be held March 6-9 in Asheville, N.C., at the U.S. Cellular Center. This year’s tournament fi nal will be Mon-day, March 9 at 7:00 p.m. The oldest conference tournament in the nation, the fi rst tournament was held in 1921 and 2015 marks the 95th year of the postseason classic.
