Every Home, Hunger-FreeIf ending hunger can be accomplished anywhere, it’s in Alameda County.
Without a doubt, we live in one of the most intriguing, influential and innovative places in the world.
Yet, there’s a peculiar irony here in Alameda County – the heart of the Bay Area. It’s one of the wealthiest regions nationwide … and one of the hungriest. In fact, 1 in 5 county residents turns to us for help, a ratio far outpacing the rate of hunger nationally.
For 30 years, Alameda County Community Food Bank has been a pioneer in hunger-relief efforts. Serving an area with profound need and remarkable community support, we recognize that we are uniquely positioned to lead the movement to end hunger.
That’s why in FY14 we emerged with a new strategic plan hailed by Feeding America – the nationwide network of food banks – as one of the boldest created among its members. A plan with one goal: to end hunger by FY18, providing one meal per day to every food insecure resident of our county, or 90 million meals annually.
It’s a daunting, yet inspiring task. As illustrated in this report, ending hunger requires the efforts of an entire community: contributors, volunteers, activists, legislators, government agencies, corporations, foundations and more.
Most importantly, it requires you.
Everyone deserves a place at the table. Thank you for partnering with us in our passionate pursuit of a hunger-free community.
Together, we will end hunger.
Children, adults and seniors of Alameda County do not worry about where their next meal is coming from
Alameda County Community Food Bank passionately pursues a hunger-free community

Nourishment for All: More Food, Better FoodAt the core of our mission is the acquisition and distribution of the healthiest food possible.
In FY14, we provided the equivalent of 24.2 million meals to children, adults and seniors struggling with hunger. Guided by one of the nation’s most robust Nutrition Programs, 58% of our total distribution (16.7 million pounds) was locally-sourced, farm-fresh produce critical to our neighbors’ health and prosperity. This in itself is a remarkable accomplishment, considering a statewide drought which affected the availability and cost of food.
Our Emergency Food Helpline referred 8,100 people per month to a bag of groceries or hot meal provided by our countywide 240-member agency network of pantries, soup kitchens and community organizations. This network thrives on our capacity grants and trainings, which improve its distribution practices, infrastructure, safety and nutrition policies to better nourish the 1 in 5 residents we collectively serve.
The Food Bank’s direct distribution programs also grew in scale and innovation. Bolstered by a customized truck donated by Waste Management and Rush Enterprises, our Mobile Pantry flourished in FY14. Traveling to schools in neighborhoods that typically lack healthy food outlets, this program grew 114% in FY14, providing the equivalent of 165,000 meals. Along with our Children’s BackPack program, we work to provide low-income children and their families with nutritious food – and energy, health and joy to succeed on the road ahead.

Joining Forces: Strategic Partnerships & Community LeadershipWith a strategic plan as bold as ours, we must enlist the collaboration of advocates, legislators, government agencies, corporations and hunger-relief organizations.
ADVOCACYFY14 was a triumphant year for our Policy and Advocacy department, renowned as the most active among California food banks and one of the nation’s most accomplished. Year-round, staff and grassroots advocates engaged legislators, demanding greater access to healthy food, and the protection and restoration of critical safety net programs.
After 17 years of tireless advocacy, we were instrumental in lifting the CalFresh (food stamps) ban on certain former drug felons. Income eligibility expanded significantly to qualify more families for CalFresh, too. And the state budget responded to our call to prevent 9,800 County households from losing nearly $100 a month in food stamp benefits to federal funding cuts.
Meanwhile, our policy team also spearheaded coalitions among food justice and anti-hunger colleagues – including our Food Security Summit series, launched this year.
STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPSStrategic partnerships are key drivers of our ability to serve our community. This is evident in efforts like our Grocery Rescue Program, which partners agencies with grocers to salvage food. In just its second year, Grocery Rescue grew 140%, providing the equivalent of 1.25 million healthy meals otherwise unnecessarily headed to landfills.
Finally, in FY14 we were proud to be selected as a partner in Morgan Stanley’s Healthy Cities, a program that funds community health solutions in three cities nationwide. As the leader of the Oakland initiative, we are implementing a multifaceted suite of solutions to address the joint problems of hunger and health among children in our neighborhoods.

The Right to Resources: CalFresh OutreachWe strive to end hunger in a multi-dimensional and systemic way. More than providing a hearty meal for today’s dinner or groceries to last the weekend, we connect families to sustainable resources, like CalFresh (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program [SNAP], commonly known as food stamps).
In partnership with Alameda County Social Services Agency, our nationally-recognized CalFresh Outreach Program, staffed by a corps of multilingual, multicultural outreach workers, helped 3,400 households apply for critical nutrition benefits. Their efforts alone provided access to 4 million meals – a 66% increase in FY14 – while generating $19.4 million in local economic stimulus.
As pioneers of this program – ours being the first of its kind among food banks nationwide – our ultimate goal is to achieve full participation in CalFresh among eligible Alameda County residents. Our highly successful Super Enrollment Clinics, introduced in FY14, expedite the CalFresh application process into a 30-minute start-to-finish appointment and shorten the wait time for benefits by two weeks. Thus, we more quickly meet the immediate need in our community, while also empowering our neighbors with long-term health, stability, and shared prosperity.

Building Our Toolbox: Infrastructure and ResourcesIn order to provide 90 million meals annually by FY18, we must expand our bandwidth. We rely on community, corporate and foundation support to fund the expansion and efficiency of our workforce, facility, equipment and technology. From strengthening staff diversity and leadership development to nurturing our corps of 13,000 dedicated volunteers – whose time in FY14 equated to 43 additional full-time employees – we recognize that we are only as powerful as our resources and relationships. By investing in our Food Bank’s infrastructure, our community plays a critical role in enriching our organizational maturity, evolving our operational capacity and ultimately, catalyzing our journey to end hunger in Alameda County.

FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
Note 1: Feeding America , the national food bank network, valued donated food commodities at $1.72 per pound for FY14.Note 2: The Food Bank recognizes donated and USDA commodities as a contribution and resulting inventory. Inventory is expensed when food is distributed.
The increase in net assets is due to an increase in donated inventory and a one-time bequest in the individual contributions. The Food Bank received more donated food in FY14 than it distributed due to the timing of shipments and strategically allocating inventory to the following year to meet community needs for specific types of food.
