highlightsNew Board Orientation Thursday, February 20
SCSBA’s interactive learning experience for newly-elected or appointed board members provides essential skill building presentations and better under-standing of the roles and re-sponsibilities of school boards. Held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the orientation is open to SC-SBA members only and features a proven and praised line up of topics from ethics and decision making to financial oversight and basic regulations. Par-ticipants can comply with the state law requiring new board
members to complete new board training free-of-charge and extend their stay to enjoy additional training during the Annual Con-vention. All other SCSBA members are wel-come to attend for $100 per person, which includes lunch.
Board Chair Workshop Thursday, February 20
Gain practical skills to effectively lead and manage at SCSBA’s annual leadership ses-sion specifically for experienced and new board chairs. Held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the workshop focuses on the specific roles and responsibilities and skills to address the demanding issues that come with the top job. It is open to superintendents and other interested board members. The registration fee, which includes lunch, is $125 for SCSBA members and $225 for non-members.

General Sessions, Hot Topics and Share the Success Workshops
From the four general session keynote speakers, to the hot topics sessions and share the suc-cess workshops, this year’s convention features information on increasing student achievement, reaching diverse populations, effective board operations, innovative programs and more.
Trade show
Take home a wealth of ideas and product infor-mation from the more than 65 exhibitors, includ-ing architectural firms, food service providers, suppliers of instructional materials, and more. Trade show hours are Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. and Saturday, 7:30 - 11:30 a.m. To find out who is going to be at the trade show, visit scsba.org/annual-convention.
Student performances
Student musicians and vocalists will showcase their talents throughout the convention. Those scheduled to perform include the Spring Valley High School Orchestra (Richland School District Two); Allendale Steel Tigers (Allendale County Schools); Discovery Singers (Marl-boro County School District); Blue Flame Bluegrass (School District of Pickens County); Hardeeville Ridgeland Middle School Ladies Quartet (Jasper County School District); and the Singing Stallions (Lee County School District).
Saturday evening reception
Before heading out on the town for dinner, join colleagues, con-vention speakers and SCSBA staff from 5 to 6:30 p.m. for a network-ing reception and a little fun, to
include a photo booth and door prizes. NOTE: The reception is complimentary for registered convention attendees who RSVP their atten-dance in advance through the board secretary or company contact. Additional wristbands for guests are available for $25 each and must be reserved in advance by the board secretary or company contact.
Dress code
Dress code throughout the convention is casual. Dressing in layers is recommended, as some meeting rooms may be a little cool.

SCSBA is excited to add a Saturday plated luncheon for registered attendees only (must wear name badge to attend). Dine, unwind and network with colleagues around the state while enjoying student performances.

The registration fee, which includes one ad-mission for Saturday’s luncheon and evening reception, through January 31 for SCSBA members is $250 per person and for non-members is $350 per person. Cancellations and registrations after the deadline will be charged an additional $25.

The Embassy Suites is located in the Kingston Plantation at 9800 Queensway Boulevard in Myrtle Beach. A nightly room rate of $132, single or double plus taxes and fees, is avail-able through January 20 or when the room block is full; whichever comes first. Attendees staying in the Embassy Suites and Kingston Plantation Condos & Villas in the SCSBA contracted room block will receive a complimentary full breakfast Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the Embassy Suites’ Coastal Grill and an evening Manager’s Reception. Breakfast begins at 6:30 a.m., Friday through Sunday. NOTE: Attendees who book rooms outside of the SCSBA contracted room block in the Kingston Plantation Condos & Villas or at the Hilton Myrtle Beach Hotel will incur an additional fee of $15 per night, per room.

James H. Johnson, Jr., Ph.D., Kenan Distinguished Professor, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, NC
Dr. Jim Johnson is the WilliamRandKenan,Jr.Distinguished Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneur-ship at UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School. He is also director of the Urban In-vestment Strategies Center at the Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise, which focuses on innovative approaches to revitalizing urban areas and on teaching government, community, and nonprofit leaders and managers to become more entrepreneurial and business-like in their operations and service delivery. Dr. Johnson is an expert on community and economic develop-ment, the effects of demographic changes on the U.S. workplace, interethnic minority conflict in advanced industrial societies, urban poverty and public policy, and workforce diversity issues. He is widely quoted in national media and appears on national network news programs. Fast Company magazine named Johnson one of the “17…bright-est thinkers and doers in the new world of work.” Dr. Johnson spent twelve years on the faculty at the University of California, Los Angeles, before coming to UNC-Chapel Hill. Glenda Doles, Motivational Speaker, Author and Adjunct Instructor, Midlands Technical College
Glenda Doles has been described as “very con-tagious and pleasantly outrageous!” She is rap-idly becoming one of the most requested speakers in the area and delights audiences with her humor and heart! Doles is a graduate of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She was recruited by Duke Energy (formerly Duke Power) upon her graduation and had a very successful 37-year career before retiring in 2003. At Duke Energy, she held numerous positions in marketing, sales, com-munity affairs and public relations and was man-ager of the Retiree Affairs division where she led one of the most successful corporate retiree volun-teer programs in the nation. She currently is on the Retiree Leadership Team, serving as president of the Gastonia Chapter and was just named Retiree Volunteer of the Year. Doles is an adjunct instruc-tor with Midland’s Technical College in Columbia, where she was named Adjunct Instructor of the Year in 2006. She is a former Miss Thomasville, North Carolina, where she also won the Miss Con-genialityaward.SheismarriedtoDr.WarnerDoles,senior pastor at Fraley Memorial Baptist Church in Gastonia. They have four children and six grand-children.
Dr. Rose H. Wilder, SCASA Superintendent of the Year, Superinten-dent, Clarendon School District One
On May 2, 2013, Dr. Rose WilderwasnamedSu-perintendent of the Year for the State of South Carolina. She is com-pleting her 10th year as superintendent in Clar-endon School District One where she has led the improvement of academic performance of students. Despite being considered the third highestincidenceofpovertyinthestate,Wilderhas led Clarendon School District One to be the second highest academically performing high poverty district. She has more than 30 years of service in education. Prior to coming to Clarendon One, she was superintendent in FairfieldCountySchoolDistrict.In1994,Wilder’sappointment as superintendent in Clarendon School District Two was a historical moment. The State newspaper ran a story about the appointment and noted that she was the first black female superintendent in South Carolina since reconstruction and the first black super-intendent in Manning. She also has the distinc-tion of being the first black female superinten-dent in Clarendon One and in Fairfield County SchoolDistrict.WilderiscurrentlypresidentofSouth Carolina Association of School Adminis-trators has received many awards and recog-nition for her work as an educator, including being named Outstanding Superintendent in 1999bySCSBA.Dr.WilderismarriedtoJamesC.Wilder.
