The end of Dentistry as we know it.

I read with some interest an article in the January 2014 Smithsonian magazine that the Milky Wayis on a collision course with our neighboringgalaxy, Andromeda (at 60 miles a second!).Catastrophic? Yes, but still some four billion years off.

A little closer to now and a little more personal, where do you think your dental practice will be in ten years? In the same Smithsonian mentionedabove there is a review of study fi nding that individuals are not very good at predicting what their lives will be in ten years. There is a tendency to assume (or hope) that life will be much as it is at present. When the same individuals were asked if their lives had changed in the past ten years, they were very good at identifying an evolution of personality, values and tastes. The authors termed this phenomenon “the end of history illusion.” Thesame phenomenon probably factors into ourprofessional lives. We perhaps want the futureof dentistry to remain as it is now (and certainlynot decline), but we should be positioningourselves for change.

The UW School of Dentistry is changing itscurriculum to better prepare students for an evolvingworkplace. Those of us in the workforce should beworking together to ensure that the profession cansustain the hope of a successful career to thosegraduating students.

I will say that over my 36 years in dentistry Ihave found that a common sentiment among dentists is (and seems always to have been) thatthe golden age of dentistry was 5 years ago. Regardless of the decade, it has always seemed to look bad “now” and getting worse. I heardthis in 1977 in dental school (Oh, I would not want to be graduating now!), when I appliedfor specialty training in 1985 (Why would you want to specialize in that? It’s a dying specialty!), when I bought into my practice in 1999 (Bellevue? No growth there, everything is movingeast – or back to Seattle) and now in 2014as I just made a big investment in the practice (Are you crazy?).

It is interesting to note that dentistry has changedover those 36 years sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse. As a profession, we have positioned ourselves well and anticipated those changes. While I was not very good at predictingchange, I have often benefi tted. Endodontics is much better with microscopes, ultrasonic root end preps, nickel titanium rotary fi les, bioceramics, digital radiography and practice managementsoftware. On the down side, I now receive a lower fee for most molar root canals than I did three years ago and third party payers seem to want to lower that fee even further.

The point is that dentistry as we knew it in 1977 (and ’86 and ’95 and ’04) has ceased to exist, but the profession is still thriving (if somewhat endangered). Perhaps the skepticism mentioned earlier is a healthy one. Dentistry, as a profession, has positioned itself well for the changes and challenges that have come. Looking to the future, we need to continue to advocate for what we think is right and oppose those who areintent on doing the profession harm in the name of profi t. Lobby your patients, friends,

neighbors and politicians on the benefi ts of high quality dentistry, access to care and promotion of dental health. Through our county, state andnational tripartite organization, we have people with excellent contacts that can effectively lobby at theirrespective levels. Let the leadership of SKCDS, WSDA and ADA know what you think is right for dentistry. There are many different ideas on how to position the profession well for the future, some of which work.

Let’s keep talking and advocating.

events focused on our female membership. We are eager to include all ages – dental students, retired dentists, moms who work part-time – and offer a morning of giving and sharing. The fi rst event will take place on Saturday, May 3, 2014. We will be collaborating with one or two women’s shelters in the greater Seattle area. Our members are invited

to join us at the SKCDS offi ce for a light brunchbuffet, beverages and a time of visiting andpreparing dental hygiene kits for disadvantaged women and children. There is no charge to attend, and SKCDS will provide all the supplies. Just bring yourself and a willingness to help! We hope to assemble 200+ dental hygiene kits to share with those in need.

Additionally, we will be collecting gently used pro-fessional attire for the Dress for Success Program through the downtown YWCA. Mark your 2014 calendar for this morning of sharing, socializing and connecting with fellow women in dentistry. If you know of a female dentist who is not a member but might like to attend, please bring them along!

SKCDS Women in Dentistry:Kick-Off to a New Program!

The Seattle-King County Dental Society is actively working to reach our entire membership and address their specifi c needs. It is no secret that women are the fastest growing demographic in dentistry. As we look for ways to attract and retain members, we need to look at what our female members want out of their membership andparticipation in organized dentistry. This summer, we convened a small Task Force to fi nd out what we can offer women that will make membership relevant to them. The overwhelming response was opportunities to socialize and give back to the community. This confi rms what we have known for so long: dentists love to give back to others and support their communities. Based on thisinformation, SKCDS is moving into 2014 with two

New to DentistryOpportunities for Dentists under 40!

Ah, to be young and in Seattle! It’s all good… especially if you are a dentist. New Dentists who are members of the Seattle-King County Dental Society have a plethora of activities to choose, and we are here to keep you informed you so that you do not miss a thing! In case you are wonder-ing if you are a “new dentist,” this is our criteria: anyone who is under 40 years of age or who has been out of dental school less than 10 years.

The New Year begins with the ever-popular New Dentist program. This program runs from January to May and features monthly presentations on practice management topics. This year we are having speakers present information on: marketing and branding (January), accounting basics (February), staff management (March) and associateships (May). In April we will host our fourth annual Boot Camp and in late May there will be a special opportunity to meet and mingle with senior dentists. We have a great array of speakers and some outstanding vendors who will

also be present to share information with you. Our January program on marketing was presented by Cory Roleto, founding partner of WEO Media, a marketing and internet company focused on the dental industry. In February, we welcome Maggie Boyle of The Dental Group, LLC. Ms. Boyle is a CPA and partner in this firm that caters to dental practice needs. She brings 20+ years of experience in getting your financial house in order. In March, Dr. Rhonda Savage, owner of Miles Global, will join us. Dr. Savage is very well known as both a dentist and a speaker on management issues. In May we will be hosting our New Dentist program at the University of Washington. We welcome transitions consultant Verlin Frickel to talk about Associateships. This program is co-sponsored by the UW SOD Alumni Association. Finally, in late May will we offer a new event to encourage new dentists to meet and mingle with those members considering practice transitions. We will host this event at Hotel Deca in the University District (Our sponsor is Bank of America.) We will offer an informal time of cocktails, appetizers and visiting with established practitioners as well as some of our preferred vendors. As if all that was not enough... join us for our fourth annual Boot Camp on Saturday, April 12th. This popular half-day workshop features presentations by eight of our most trusted vendors. The focus is on practice management and what it takes to start in the business of dentistry.

Last of all, Happy Hour is catching on in a big way!If you missed our September and November events, it is not too late to get in on the fun. We had over 35 attendees for our gathering at Frolick in September. Over 50 people attended our Hap-

py Hour at The Ram in November. The first drink is on us, and it is a great time for all students and young practitioners to gather casually.

We know you are just starting out and are on a bud-get, so all of our New Dentist programming is at no charge. That is right – FREE! We do ask that you RSVP for all events so that we can plan our meals accordingly. Our New Dentist program offers pizza and beverages along with CDE credit and time to learn and socialize. Boot Camp is no charge and includes a boxed lunch, four (4) CDE credits and lots of great information.

Organized dentistry is about bringing members together to learn, socialize and grow professionally. SKCDS is happy to offer opportunities for you to advance your career. as we dozed in front of the TV. Woofi e was perhaps the best squirrel chaser in Seattle, though to this day, I wonder how anyone outside the neighborhood heard of his prowess. Maybe there is something to this domestic drone spy stuff we read about in the paper everyday. Maybe I should begin working on my Top Dentist skills. Having never been chosen, I evidently need a lot of improvement. Clearly I need to dress better. I could easily be the “before” photo in a makeover program. My shoes need shining and I wear the same pants for days in a row. My son is a shoe salesman at Nordstrom, and he just shakes his head at my lack of style and composition. I look a little more like Dorf at the golf course than Freddie Couples. I could use some veneers on my front teeth and some liposuction on my belly. My offi ce could use some help as well; I don’t even have a sign on my building. (I had one once but it fell off in a storm and it never got put back.) I need to quit placing gold and amalgam in teeth and get with the white stuff in a big way. I know that will make for better press when I am interviewed on TV during the next big dental news crisis. I’m going to fi nd a hair stylist and take a speech class to prepare for the occasion. I’ll be sure to tell the newscaster that my shots don’t hurt, and we don’t place those mercury fi llings anymore. With these changes and more, I’m certain that I will be chosen in the next Seattle’s Top Dentist contest.

That’s all for now from Ballard.

I was recently in a big grocery store, killing time while my wife shopped for groceries. I try not to follow her around the store like lame husbands do as she deftly selects the food for the week. There is something pathetic about husbands pushing the grocery cart, or worse yet, tagging along behind the wife as she slaloms through the store, pulling items off the shelf. Anyway, during shopping, I like to go elsewhere. My favorite distraction is the baked goods section. I like to peruse all the breads and pastries that I am no longer allowed to eat now that my cholesterol is somewhere north of Fairbanks. “Can I help you,” says the clerk? Oh brother can you ever, just not today while she is in the vicinity. After metaphorically devouring the majority of items in the bakery (a singularly unfulfi lling meal), I drift over to the magazine section. I pick up one particulary glossy Seattle mag, attracted by the headline of “Seattle’s Top Dentists.” Thumbing through this feature, I once again discover my absence on this hallowed list. Being overlooked by the Powers That Be in the Seattle’s Top Dentists contest was actually not too surprising. I have seldom fl oated on the cream that rises to the top. In fourth grade, I won the class Spelling Bee. That is the last time I recall winning any game of skill. In high school gym class when basketball team members were picked, I was always the next to the last member chosen. There was always a short, fat kid that was chosen behind me, the short skinny kid. Athletic prowess was never one of my strong points. I tried out for swim team in high school and lasted an hour before heaving my guts out. Track, football, who are you kidding?! ‘Short, skinny and slow’ adds little to interscholastic sport team excellence. I do recall being chosen for Who’s Who in America a few years ago. I felt quite honored as I read that for only $149 I would receive a gold-letter embossed copy of the Who’s Who book and a plaque with my name on it. I thought better of that notion but felt my dog Woofi e perhaps deserved the honor. So I fi lled out the application for Woofi e, slightly exaggerating his credentials, and sent it in. Much to my delight and his, he was accepted into this august body of America’s leaders. The price was the same: $149 for the book and plaque. Woofi e received many calls and letters over the next six months as there was evidently a shortage of great American leaders that year. Though he never bought the book or plaque, he and I quietly reveled in this distinguished honor
