Colorado State University takes its role in educating stu-dent-athletes very seriously. Excellence is expected on the field and in the classroom.

The most recent NCAA academic statistics reveal that Colora-do State leads the Mountain West Conference in graduation rate for student-athletes at 66 percent – well ahead of the con-ference’s overall student-athlete graduation rate of 57 percent. In football, Colorado State is second in the MW, graduating 68 percent of its student-athletes – again, well ahead of the con-ference average of 49 percent. Additionally, CSU student-ath-letes graduate at a higher percentage than the general student body.

WORLD-CLASS ACADEMICS

Colorado State, howev-er, is not resting on its reputation for graduating its student-athletes. The state-of-the-art Anderson Academic Center, which has greatly enhanced the academic facilities avail-able for student-athletes, opened in August 2009.

While the athletic depart-ment takes its role in the educational process very seriously, Colorado State’s mission to provide a world-class education is at the core of academic success. U.S. News and World Report ranked Colorado State in its top tier in its annu-al “America’s Best Colleges” report. The university offers 72 majors and 27 minors, and many of its programs are ranked among the best in the country.

Colorado State continues to push forward in its mission to provide the best possible education. Construction recently was completed on the state-of-the-art University Center for the Arts and Computer Science buildings and the Rockwell Hall expansion at the College of Business.

• CSU’s Veterinary Medicine program ranks third in the country, also ranking third in national federal research dollars.• BusinessWeek ranked CSU’s undergraduate College of Business program 67th. The mar-keting and business law programs were ranked in the nation’s Top 10 by the magazine.• In 2008, CSU conferred its 150,000th bachelor’s degree and 200,000th overall degree.• According to NCAA statistics, CSU’s graduation rate for student-athletes is higher than the graduation rate for the overall student body.

THE MILE HIGH CITY

The Denver Metro Area, with a population of 2.4 million, is less than an hour’s drive from Fort Collins. Three of its teams have competed for their respective world championships in the past

15 years, and Colorado fans are among the most passionate in the nation. Denver has all the features of any big city, including great shop-ping and nightlife on the 16th Street Mall (Denver Pavilions, right), a one-of-a-kind concert venue in Red Rocks Amphitheatre (below, right), an adrenaline-inducing amusement park in Elitch Gardens (be-low, left), and the world’s 10th-busiest airport, Denver International.

Nicknamed the Mile High City because it is one mile above sea level, downtown Denver is home to the Col-orado state capitol building, the 13th step of which is exactly one mile in elevation.

THE MOUNTAIN WEST

THIS IS THE MOUNTAIN WESTFrom its inception in 1999, the Mountain West has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. Progressive in its approach, the MW continues to cultivate opportunities for student-athletes to com-pete at the highest level, while fostering academic achievement and sportsmanship. Now in its 15th year, the MW has been assertive in its involvement with the NCAA governance structure and has taken a leadership role in the overall administration of intercollegiate athletics.

The Mountain West has marked several achievements over its first 14 years of existence, most notably becoming the first to establish a sports television network dedicated solely to an intercollegiate athletic conference (The Mtn.). The Mountain West also was the first to exper-iment with the coaches’ challenge in the college football instant replay system, and was the first non-automatic-qualifying BCS conference to participate in four BCS bowl games, winning three. Additionally, the Mountain West was the first conference to have a member institution with No. 1 overall picks in both the NFL and NBA drafts in the same year (Utah’s Alex Smith and Andrew Bogut, respectively in 2005). With San Diego State’s Stephen Strasburg claiming the No. 1 pick in the 2009 MLB Draft, the Mountain West is one of two conferences to have the No. 1 selection in each of the NFL, NBA and MLB drafts since the MW was founded in 1999. In 2011-12, the Mountain West was among the first conferences to implement a league-wide state-of-the-art basketball instant replay system.

The Mountain West is noted for its geographic diversity. Some of the most beautiful terrain and landscapes in the nation can be found within Mountain West boundaries, in-cluding the majestic Rocky Mountain range, which borders six MW institutions (Air Force, Boise State, Colorado Col-lege, Colorado State, New Mexico and Utah State). The high plains of Wyoming (elevation 7,220 feet – the highest Divi-sion I campus in the nation) contrast with the desert cities of Las Vegas and Reno, home to UNLV and Nevada, respectively, while Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State add a West coast influence with their locations in Central, Southern and Northern Califor-nia. The inclusion of the Hawai‘i football program extends the Mountain West footprint to the beautiful islands in the Pacific Ocean.HISTORY The Mountain West was conceived on May 26, 1998, when the pres-idents of eight institutions — Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, New

Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming — decided to form a new NCAA Division I-A intercollegiate athletic conference. The split from a former 16-team conference re-established continuity and sta-bility among the membership within the new league and signaled the continuation of its tradition-rich, long-standing athletic rivalries. Three of the MW’s eight original members have been conference rivals since the 1960s (New Mexico, Wyoming and Colorado State), while San Di-ego State (1978) and Air Force (1980) were longtime members as well. UNLV and TCU entered the fold in 1996 and the Rebels continued as one of the original eight institutions that formed the MW in 1999. TCU re-joined the group with its first year of competition in the Mountain West in 2005-06. With conference realignment sweeping the nation in recent years, the MW has been proactive in addressing membership changes. Boise State University joined the Mountain West in 2011-12, followed by Fresno State and the University of Nevada on July 1, 2012. Also on July 1, 2012, the University of Hawai‘i became a football-only member of the Conference. On July 1, 2013, the Mountain West further expanded when San Jose State University and Utah State University joined the Conference, bringing to 11 the number of full-time member institutions and 12 football-playing members.

When the Mountain West officially began operations on July 1, 1999, the new league had in place a seven-year contract with ESPN, giving the broadcaster exclusive national television rights to MW football and men’s basketball, and three-year agreements to send the league’s foot-ball champion to the Liberty Bowl and a second team to the Las Vegas Bowl. Commissioner Craig Thompson also arranged a third bowl tie-in each of the first three seasons (1999 Motor City, 2000 Silicon Valley, 2001 New Orleans) before securing a four-year deal with the Emer-ald Bowl in San Francisco in 2002. Entering the 2013 season, the MW has six contracted bowl affiliations – the Las Vegas Bowl, San Diego Country Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl, Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl, Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl, Famous Potato Idaho Bowl and Gildan New Mexico Bowl.

An innovator in the postseason bowl structure, the MW engineered many “firsts,” as league teams have participated in five inaugural bowl games (2000 Silicon Valley, 2001 New Orleans, 2002 San Francisco (Emerald), 2005 Poinsettia, 2006 New Mexico), as well as placing the first non-automatic-qualifying BCS team into a BCS bowl game with Utah’s appearance in the 2005 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

HEAD COACH BILL HEMPEN

BILL HEMPENHead Coach | Second Year | 26th Year Overall

Veteran Division I soc-cer coach and Colora-do resident Bill Hemp-en became Colorado State University’s first head women’s soc-cer coach on Feb. 5, 2013. In his first season at the helm of CSU, Hempen led the first-year program to

a 2-13-3 record, producing the program’s first-ever win in its first-ever match.

Hempen is one of the sport’s all-time greats, ranking No. 20 in NCAA Division I history for career wins (278-201-47). In 25 seasons as a head coach he has developed 10 All-Americans, coached six players who have gone on to play professionally and guided his 1992 Duke team to the NCAA championship final.

He earned National Coach of the Year honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in 1992, and has been named conference coach of the year four times.

Hempen began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Northeast Louisiana in 1982 before assuming a full-time assis-tant coaching position at Centenary College in Shreveport, La., a year later. After three years at Centenary he joined the Duke men’s program as an assistant coach in 1986 and was part of a staff that led the Blue Devils to three NCAA tournament berths, including a national championship in his first season.

When Duke added a women’s soccer program in 1988 Hempen was tabbed to build and develop that program from the ground up as its first head coach. He earned more than 160 wins in 13 seasons (1988-2000), coaching seven All-Americans and appearing in eight NCAA tournaments in his final nine seasons in Durham. In 1992, the Blue Devils advanced to the national championship game just five years after the team’s inception.

After his tenure at Duke, Hempen spent 11 seasons in the state

of Colorado, transforming the University of Colorado women’s program.

Prior to his arrival in 2001, the Buffaloes had never produced a winning record. In 2003, Hempen’s third at CU, his team won the Big 12 title and advanced to the NCAA tournament, the first of six under Hempen’s tutelage. That year, Hempen also was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year.

Hempen went 114-88-28 at CU before stepping down after the 2011 season. The Buffs advanced to the Sweet Sixteen in 2006, and during his time in Boulder, three of his players earned All-America status.

Even more impressive is how quickly he was able to turn the program around. In 2001, his first at CU, the Buffs went 3-11-1. The year following, his team went 10-8-2, marking the big-gest single-season turnaround in Big 12 history. Just one year later, his team was atop the conference standings.

Hempen has served as a scout and player development coach for U.S. Soccer since 2011. In that position he has identified players for the National Team and been involved in player se-lection, organization and coaching of the top Region III players. Hempen also has more than a decade of experience with mul-tiple club and junior national teams. He has served as Director of Soccer for Alexander Dawson School in Lafayette, Colo., for the past year, coaching both the boys and girls high school teams, in addition to overseeing the development of the middle and elementary school programs.

As a player, Hempen spent two seasons at Meramec Commu-nity College, playing goalie for the 1976 junior college national championship and 1977 runner-up teams. He then lettered two years at the University of Evansville, graduating in 1981 with a degree in health/physical education. After graduation, he was drafted by the New Jersey Americans of the American Soccer League.

Hempen and his wife, Stephanie, married in 1999. They have two children: Emma (14) and Lucas (12), and currently reside in Louisville, Colo.

ASSISTANT COACH KELLY LABOR

KELLY LABORAssistant Coach | Second Year | Fifth Year Overall

Kelly Labor heads into her second season on the CSU women’s soc-cer staff, and

fifth season overall, as an assistant coach

Labor joined Head Coach Bill Hempen on Colorado State’s staff after three years as an assistant at Regis University. While at Regis, she was tasked with individual tech-nical and group skill development. Labor helped guide the Rangers to RMAC champi-onships and NCAA Division II tournaments in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Labor is also currently involved with the Colorado Olmpic Development Program as well as with local clubs.

Labor holds her NSCAA Advanced National Coaching license as well as a masters in in-dustrial and organizational psychology with a specialization in leadership development.

A native Steamboat Springs, Colo., Labor attended Regis University for one year. While there she was awarded Rocky Moun-tain Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year, first-team all-conference, all-tourna-ment and NSCAA second-team all-region.

Labor then transferred to UNLV to complete her undergrad in psychology. The program honored her with the Robin Morlock Award for work ethic, leadership and dedication. A three-time academic all-Mountain West honoree, Labor helped her team to the reg-ular-season championship in 2007.

ASSISTANT COACH CHRIS BENTLEY

CHRIS BENTLEYAssistant Coach | First Year | 10th Year Overall

Chris Bentley begins his first season on the CSU women’s soccer staff as an assistant

coach.

Bentley joins Head Coach Bill Hempen and Assistant Coach Kelly Labor, after nine years of coaching at the Division I, II and III levels.

Bentley began his collegiate coaching ca-reer at Ripon College (NCAA Division III), where he was an assistant coach for the men’s soccer team. After a year at Ripon College, Bentley moved up the ranks and accepted the job of associate head coach for the men’s and women’s soccer teams at Delta State University (NCAA Division II).

At DSU, Bentley helped take the teams to new heights, where both programs set re-cords for most wins in a season. His wom-en’s side finished the 2006 season ranked 5th in the NCAA’s Top 20 Most-Improved Programs. After two years at Delta State, Bentley was afforded the opportunity to take over the assistant coach position at Troy University (NCAA Division I).

After just one season as an assistant coach, Bentley was promoted to head coach, where he helped guide the team to five-con-secutive Sun Belt Conference Champion-ship berths. After totaling just 50 wins and only one post-season appearance in its 11 seasons before Bentley took over as head coach, the program amassed 54 wins in 6 years under his direction, making him the all-time winningest soccer coach at Troy. In addition to posting the best 6-year winning span in program history, Bentley’s teams earned the NSCAA Team Academic in each of his 6 years in charge.

A native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, Bentley earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and his Master’s Degree from Delta State Uni-versity. In addition, Bentley has earned the USSF “A” License, NSCAA Premier Diploma, National Goalkeeping Diploma and NSCAA National Youth Diploma. He has been a staff coach for the State (AL & MS), Region III and Super Y National Olym-pic Development Program’s. He has also served as a coaching educator at his prior stops, teaching the USSF E & D Licenses. Bentley and his wife, Ann Renee’, married in 2008. They have one child (John Turner), and currently reside in Fort Collins, Colo.

2014 SEASON PREVIEW

The Colorado State women’s soccer program en-ters Year 2 and faces a schedule that is sure to test the young program.

2014 Schedule

The 2014 slate begins with a trip down to Boulder where the Rams will open up the season against rival Colorado on Friday, Aug. 22. The fixture will also be part of this year’s Colorado Cup, a compe-tition between all six Division I teams in Colorado. (Oct. 12) and San Diego State (Oct. 26) during confernce season, while playing on the road at Boise State (Oct. 3), Utah State (Oct. 5), San José State (Oct. 17), Fresno State (Oct. 19), New Mex-ico (Oct. 24) and Wyoming (Oct. 31). The home matches against Air Force and ColoradoCollege will also be part of the Colorado Cup.

In total, the Rams will play 19 matches in their 2014 campaign, including 10 at home.

2014 Roster

In its second season, Colorado State features a squad of proven veterans and talented incoming freshmen and transfers.

The Rams return nine players from its inaugural season, including its entire starting defense. In addition to the nine returnees, Colorado State also brings in 18 newcomers, including 13 freshmen and seven transfers.

Colorado State’s leadership will come from the backline from co-captains Megan Speed and Jami Vaughn, as well as senior Catherine Ruder.

Speed, a standout at Fort Collins High School, transferred to play at Colorado State last year after previously competing at Northern Colorado, while Vaugh, also a local standout, returned home last year after two years at Kansas.

Ruder previously played at San Jose State be-fore coming to Colorado State, and provides the Rams with a dangerous attacking option from its

defense.

Colorado State also returns its leading scorer from last season in junior Erika Bratschun, who should help shore up the midfield for the Rams.

Up top, CSU has added an assortment of new at-tacking options including junior transfer Gianna Bertana, who comes to the Rams from Foothill College.

Colorado State’s 29 girls hail from five different states (California, Colorado, Hawai’i, Illinois and Utah). The team features three seniors, five ju-niors, eight sophomores and 13 freshmen.

2013 SEASON REVIEW

In its first season ever, the Colorado State women’s soccer team hit the ground running, taking on some of the premier programs in the sport. Led by a veteran group of four defenders (Catherine Ruder, Megan Speed, Jessica Stauffer and Jami Vaughn), who all had previous Division I experience, the Rams earned the first victory in program when they knocked off Lubbock Christian 3-0 in their first-ever game.

Just two weeks into the season, the Rams went on the road for its toughest test of the year, taking on then No. 24 ranked Texas Tech. The match gave CSU a first-hand look at the level of competition the program aspires to achieve.

Colorado State tacked on two ties to go with its win in non-conference play, and headed into Moutain West play with a 1-4-2 record.

The Rams dropped their first four league games, including an overtime loss to Air Force in their first-ever conference game, but rebounded with an impressive 1-0 win at Nevada.

Colorado State closed out its regular season with a non-conference match against in-state foe Northern Colorado, and again pulled off an impressive result on the road with a 2-2 tie.

The Rams ended their inaugural season with a 2-13-3 record, but showed plenty of signs of improvement throughout the year.

MATCH 1 - COLORADO STATE VS. LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN

3 0

Lubbock, Texas - The Colorado State women’s soccer program achieved history on Friday night, as the team earned the program’s first win in school history with a 3-0 victory over Lubbock Christian University.

“It was a weird feeling,” Head Coach Bill Hempen said of the team’s first win. “This is a brand new team, and there were moments where it was chaotic and moments where it looked like they had played together all their lives. It was something that was truly unique and special.”

The Rams (1-0) jumped on the Chaps early on in the match when freshman midfielder Carly Seib rebounded a shot and put it into the back of the net in just the sixth minute, scoring the first goal in CSU history.

Colorado State kept control of the match in the first half, constantly putting pressure on Lubbock Christian and maintaining possession. The Rams out-shot the Chaps 15-5 in the first half alone.

In the 53rd minute, Sasha Pchenitchnikova added to the team’s lead, sliding the ball past the goalie with her left foot. Just eight minutes later, CSU tacked on another when Jessica Stauffer was able to find Erika Bratschun who finished it off to give the team a 3-0 lead with under 30 minutes to play.

From there, the Rams relied on their solid defense which limited the scoring opportunities for Lubbock Christian, allowing just 11 shots in the whole match and seven on goal.

“The back four was great,” Hempen said of his veteran-led defense. “Jessica (Stauffer), Jami (Vaughn), Megan (Speed) and Catherine (Ruder), they are rocks back there. They were in complete control and those kids did a great job.”

Freshman goalie Elena Eidson looked comfortable making her debut in front of the net, notching a clean sheet and recording seven saves.

The Rams (1-1) faced a lot of pressure early and often from the Red Raiders (2-0), with Texas Tech notching 12 shots, including seven on goal in just the first half.

“They played as hard as they could for as long as they could,” Head Coach Bill Hempen said. “They finally broke through. We knew going in this was going to be a tough match.”

Texas Tech was able to break through the Rams’ defense in the 20th minute when Caity Heap found herself open just in front of the goal and put away the ball from eight yards out. Just five minutes later, senior defender Hayley Haagsma found the back of the net on a header from a corner kick to put the Red Raiders in control of the match. Haagsma would add another goal just two minutes into the second half, before preseason All-American Janine Beckie got in on the scoring action, putting away a ball in the 54th minute.

The Red Raiders were relentless with their attack, scoring another two goals to put the total tally to six before all was said and done.

“The environment was hostile and it was a great crowd,” Hempen said. “Hopefully we can take some of the things that they (Texas Tech) do and bring them to Colorado State.”

MATCH 3 - COLORADO STATE AT SOUTHERN METHODIST

DALLAS, Texas - Playing its third road match of the season, the Colorado State women’s soccer program fell to 1-2 on the year, losing to the Southern Methodist Mustangs (2-1) 4-0 in Dallas, Texas.

The Mustangs jumped on the Rams very early in the match when Taylor Jackson scored in the second minute. Before Colorado State had time to regroup, SMU tacked on another goal in the eighth minute when Kelsey Gorney found the back of the net to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.

SMU added another goal in the 33rd minute to give it a 3-0 lead heading into halftime, in which the Rams were outshot 10-1.

“I probably learned a lesson today myself,” Head Coach Bill Hempen said. “I need to do a better job of playing to our kids’ strengths.”

The second half featured much of the same statistically, with the Mustangs taking another nine shots in the half, including a goal in the 82nd minute, while limiting CSU to zero goal-scoring opportunities, but Hempen thought that the second half was much more competitive.

“The kids have been very patient with me and we changed some things up at halftime,” Hempen said. “We were much more direct in the second half and I thought we did a lot better.”

MATCH 4 - COLORADO STATE VS. GRAND CANYON

0 1

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Playing in the first home match in school history, the Colorado State women’s soccer program (1-3) came up short, falling to the Grand Canyon Lopes (1-3) 1-0 at the Fort Collins Soccer Complex in front of 1,000 fans.

“To have this kind of a crowd the first night and for the first home game,” Head Coach Bill Hempen said. “It was pretty neat for me, and it was awesome for these young ladies.”

The Rams and Lopes played to a stalemate at halftime at 0-0, with the Rams controlling much of the attack. In the first half, CSU registered seven shots, including two on goal, while limiting GCU to just one shot and one shot on goal through the first 45 minutes.

Things changed for the Rams in the 50th minute however, when the Lopes capitalized on a scoring opportunity. Freshman forward Riley Richardson crossed in a dangerous ball into the box which sophomore forward Cassie Beckwith controlled and found the back of the net with her shot to give her team the deciding goal in the match.

The last forty minutes were not without drama though, as CSU put the pressure on the GCU defense countless times. The Lopes withstood a furious last 10 minutes of the match in particular, in which the Rams recorded three shots and four corner kicks. In the 81st minute, sopho-more Sasha Pchenitnikova blasted a free kick from just outside of the box which had to be tipped over the crossbar.

Colorado State’s best scoring chance perhaps came in the 84th minute, when junior Catherine Ruder found herself behind the GCU defense. Facing a one-on-one with the keeper, Ruder elected to chip the ball over the charging goalie, but the ball just sailed high of the goal.

“They realized that they had to put some pressure on,” Hempen said. “They stepped up and did well. We changed some things around and put three in the back, three up front and four in the midfield just to see if we could match up and really make it difficult for them (GCU); which we did.”

MATCH 5 - COLORADO STATE AT NORTHERN ARIZONA

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Escaping the rain back home, the Colorado State Rams (1-3-1, 0-0 MW) traveled to Falgstaff, Ariz. to take on the unde-feated Northern Arizona Lumberjacks (4-0-3, 0-0 Big Sky) where they walked away with a 1-1 tie after 110 minutes of action.

With the tie, the Rams earned their first result against a Division I program in school history

“It was a day of a lot of firsts for us,” Head Coach Bill Hempen said. “We played in our first overtime game. We were playing at 7,000 feet and our girls played normal soccer; they played their hearts out. I’m really excited for our girls. The effort today was as good as it has ever been.”

After placing early pressure on the Lumberjacks, junior Erika Bratschun sent a beautiful through ball behind the NAU defense right to the feet of freshman Amy Eckert who placed the ball into the back of the net in the 20th minute. The goal was the first of Eckert’s young career, who also played a career-high 110 minutes.

In the second half however, the Lumberjacks came out with a renewed energy and started to put more pressure on the Rams’ defense.

The Lumberjacks were persistent with their attack though, as Haley Wingender was able to put away the equalizer. Sarah Tarver sent a ball across the box to Wingender who was able to get a foot on the ball and hit it off the right post and into the back of the net. After 90 minutes of regulation, the teams were still all squared away and went into overtime to see if one team would emerge a winner.

Though there were plenty of opportunities for both teams, neither team was able to score in either of the 10 minute overtime periods and had to settle for a tie.

MATCH 6 - COLORADO STATE AT NORTH DAKOTA STATE

FARGO, N.D. - The Colorado State Rams women’s soccer program (1-4-1) continues to show great strides this season, but once again fell short in their match against North Dakota State, losing 1-0 to the Bison in Fargo, N.D.

For much of the first half, the two teams appeared to be incredibly even-matched teams. While both teams attempted the same number of shots in the first half, the Rams placed more on net.

In the 43rd minute, things changed when junior defender Tristyn Walczak put away her first goal of the season. Walczak received a cross from standout freshman Lauren Miller and headed the ball passed junior goalkeeper Maggie Sherman.

“It was an evenly matched game, but we gave up another set piece goal and that’s hard to swallow,” Head Coach Bill Hempen said. “We aren’t giving up goals in the run of play, but on set pieces and that’s bothersome. .

The second half of play resembled that of the first half as both teams looked like equal opponents. Unfortunately for Colorado State, being an equal opponent in the second half was not good enough as the team was not able to find a way to score the equalizer.

In the match, CSU took nine shots, in total including five on goal, while North Dakota State got off 11 shots and four on goal. The Bison found their biggest separation from the Rams in earning seven corner kicks while the Rams only had one.

Colorado State had seven separate players play all 90 minutes, including defenders and co-captains Megan Speed and Jami Vaughn. Through six matches, Speed and Vaughn are the only two players for the Rams to play every single possible minute this season.

“The kids are doing great,” Hempen said. They played very hard tonight and we are getting better.”

MATCH 7 - COLORADO STATE VS. SIU-EDWARDSVILLE

FARGO, N.D. - Facing one of its toughest tests of the season, Colorado State (1-4-2) rose to the occasion and played to a 0-0 tie after two overtimes against Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (6-1-2).

It was a match where both defenses refused to cave and kept their respective teams in the game. SIUE came into the match boasting a top 15 defense nationally, only allowing 0.415 goals per match and stopping 90.3 percent of the shots it has faced.

The Rams’ defense matched that execution as they posted their second shutout of the season this year.

While Colorado State couldn’t generate as much offense as SIUE, registering seven shots and three shots on goal, junior goalkeeper Maggie Sherman did her part to help the Rams earn a draw.

Sherman saved a career-high nine shots and posted her first career shutout in goal, as the Cougars desperately looked to find the game-win-ning goal to no avail.

SIUE took 18 shots in total and had three corner kicks compared to CSU’s one, but it made no difference on Sunday afternoon.

Erika Bratschun and Sasha Pchenitchnikova led Colorado State with two shots each, while Pchenitchnikova, Jessica Stauffer and Lizzy Gogolowski each recorded a shot on goal.

MATCH 8 - COLORADO STATE VS. AIR FORCE

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Playing in a cold rain and wind, the Colorado State Rams (1-5-2, 0-1-0 MW) lost their Mountain West opener in overtime to Air Force (2-6-1, 1-0-0 MW) 2-1 in front of 200 fans that braved the conditions.

The match started off slow with not a lot of action as both teams battled the conditions and tried to get used to the slippery pitch and how the ball was bouncing.

“Everyone had to play in it,” Hempen said of the weather. “I was shocked as to how much grass was on the kids’ shoes. Early on they were slipping a lot more than they were later, but it was pretty bad.”

In the 34th minute, Air Force got its best opportunity of the match at that time when Kaleigh Moses dribbled passed the defense and found herself with a breakaway. Junior goalkeeper Maggie Sherman closed down the angle though and stopped Moses’s shot to keep the score at 0-0 heading into intermission.

In the 50th minute, the Falcons got the goal they were searching for when Christy Cooper blasted a shot from 30 yards out over the out-stretched arms of Sherman.

The Rams wouldn’t wait long to get themselves back in the game. Just 13 minutes later in the 63rd minute, junior defender Catherine Ruder curved a free kick towards the back post where junior Erika Bratschun finished off with a header to square things up 1-1.

The two teams played fairly evenly for the duration of the match,, and after 90 minutes of action, neither team could find any separation so the two teams went into overtime where Air Force found a way to finish out the match.

After a handball in the 96th minute, the Falcons were awarded a free kick. Moses took the set piece and found Kristina O’Sullivan on the back post who headed it past Sherman to score the game-winning goal.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Colorado State Rams (1-6-2, 0-2-0 Mountain West) lost in the Border War to Wyoming (4-6-2, 1-0-0) 3-0 in front of 450 fans decked out in their orange gear at Fort Collins Soccer Complex Sunday.

The Cowgirls got on the board early with what turned out to be the game-winning goal from just inside the penalty box by Sammi Dunda in the 10th minute of play. From there the Rams won the time of possession battle and saw an opportunity as the defense pushed forward on a shot from sophomore Megan Speed, but CSU was unable to find the back of the net.

Wyoming’s Lucie McDowell then added a goal in the 69th minute. Mollee Ramsay tallied the third and final goal 5 minutes later for the Cowgirls on a crafty move around CSU’s Elena Eidson. McDowell picked up another point with an assist on the play.

Head Coach Bill Hempen commented on how Wyoming seemed to take advantage of CSU’s errors. “Any mistake we made, we were punished for.”

After Maggie Sherman got the start in goal for the Rams, CSU began the second half with Eidson as keeper, but after allowing two balls past her, Hempen decided Sherman would finish the match.

The Rams had their best scoring chance in the final minute of the match on an open look from Catherine Ruder, but Wyoming’s Alex Boehm closed off the angle, stopping her shot

MATCH 10 - COLORADO STATE AT SAN DIEGO STATE

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Colorado State Rams (1-7-2, 0-3 MW) lost a tough match against San Diego State (5-5-2, 3-0 MW) 3-0 on Friday night on the road.

The Aztecs were voted as preseason Mountain West favorites entering the season by the coaches and even garnered preseason national rankings, so the Rams knew that they were in for their toughest match of the year.

From the start, San Diego State showcased its talent as it relentlessly attacked Colorado State’s defense. In just the third minute of the match, Sophie Metz scored her first goal of the season on an assist from junior midfielder Hannah Keane to put the Aztecs up 1-0.

SDSU would add to its lead in the 19th minute when Keane finished off her conference-leading eight goal to give her team a 2-0 lead. The Aztecs scored its final goal of the match in the 32nd minute when Jensen Skinner found the back of the net.

In the match, San Diego State totaled 34 shots, but only nine were on target. The Aztecs also had 14 corner kicks in the match which kept the pressure on CSU’s defense.

The Rams managed just two shots in the game, including one on goal which came in a much more competitive second half. After relinquish-ing three goals in the first half, the defense shored up and kept San Diego State from adding to its total.

Seven players played all 90 minutes for the Rams, including co-captians Megan Speed and Jami Vaughn. Speed and Vaughn are two of just seven players in the Mountain West, not including goalies, that have played every single minute this year.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Finishing off its toughest week of the season thus far, the Colorado State Rams (1-8-2, 0-4-0 MW) fell to the New Mexico Lobos (5-7-1, 3-0-0 MW) at home in front of 375 fans.

“Today, I felt like we were holding our own,” Head Coach Bill Hempen said. “They capitalized on their two really good chances in the first half, and on their one really good chance in the second half.”

New Mexico sophomore midfielder Lindsey Guice, a Fort Collins native, was responsible for all three goals for the Lobos. In the 18th minute Guice received a long through ball from senior midfielder Elba Holguin. Upon receiving the pass, Guice promptly placed the ball into the corner of the net to give New Mexico a 1-0 lead.

Just seven minutes later in the 25th minute, Guice again finished off a scoring chance, this time assisted from sophomore Dylann O’Connor to put the team up 2-0.

The Rams made a couple of lineup changes in teh second half, moving junior defender Jami Vaughn up to forward and junior defender Catherine Ruder in to the midfield. Hempen hoped the move would provide some more energy up top for the Rams.

As the two teams battled in the midfield to control possession and the match, Guice capitalized on her third scoring chance when she found herself on a breakaway against junior goalkeeper Maggie Sherman. The goal in the 69th minute gave Guice her hat trick and secured the victory for the Lobos.

MATCH 12 - COLORADO STATE AT NEVADA

1 0

RENO, Nev. - After a season full of close calls and heartbreaks, the Colorado State Rams (2-8-2, 1-4-0 MW) finally got the result they were searching for with a historic 1-0 victory over Nevada (4-7-3, 2-3-0 MW) on the road.

The win marks the first time that Colorado State has defeated a Division I opponent, and also gives the brand new program its first win ever in Mountain West play.

“We knew the win was going to come sooner or later, it was just a matter of when,” Head Coach Bill Hempen said. “I’m just so happy for the girls. I’m proud of these kids because you keep pushing them and telling them that the reward is going to come, and then it does. That’s the great part.”

As the team experimented with in the second half of the New Mexico match, Colorado State started the match with players playing in different positions. Normally a defender, junior Jami Vaughn moved up and played forward for the Rams, while junior defender Catherine Ruder played long stretches in the midfield for CSU.

With the new lineup on display, the Rams looked like an energized team. CSU played with great pace and looked dangerous on the attack in the early stages of the match.

As the two teams were still tied at 0-0 with the first half winding down, the Rams found the separation it needed. In the 38th minute, sophomore midfielder Sasha Pchenitchnikova provided the spark with a great individual effort after a terrific pass from freshman midfielder Amy Eckert. Pchenitchnikova caught the goalie out of position, dribbled around her, and slid the ball into the open net to give Colorado State a 1-0 lead.

“I thought she was going to blast it in,” Hempen said. “She beat the keeper and the defense was chasing her, and she rolled it in there. It was incredible, and it was a brilliant pass from Amy.”

MATCH 13 - COLORADO STATE AT UNLV

0 1

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - In a hard-fought match on the road against the UNLV Rebels (7-6-2, 2-3-0 MW), the Colorado State Rams (2-9-2, 1-5-0 MW) were defeated 1-0.

Colorado State was seeking its second win of the week, and looked to defend in the early stages of the match.

While the Rebels applied pressure at the beginning of the match and looked to score an early goal, the Rams stayed composed on defense. Colorado State contained the UNLV attackers and limited the Rebels to very few scoring opportunities.

In the first half, UNLV registered 11 shots and four on goal, but none of them tested junior goalkeeper Maggie Sherman too much. The Rams, by comparison, had three shots and one shot on goal in the first half as the two teams went into halftime tied at 0-0.

The second half began much like the first half had started; the Rebels attacked, while the Rams defended vigorously.

In the 70th minute however, UNLV finally broke through and capitalized on a scoring chance. Freshman forward Dakota Blazak scored her first career goal when she found the back of the net on a play that was set up on a corner kick.

For the match, Sherman tied a career high with nine saves.

MATCH 14 - COLORADO STATE VS. UTAH STATE

0 3

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Playing on its practice field on campus due to snow closing down the Fort Collins Soccer Complex, the Colorado State Rams (2-10-2, 1-6-0) lost to the visiting Utah State Aggies (8-5-2, 4-2-0 MW) 3-0.

Looking to defend more to neutralize Utah State’s tendency to counter-attack, Head Coach Bill Hempen once again changed up his starting lineup. Junior defenders Jami Vaughn and Catherine Ruder returned to the back line instead of playing at forward and midfield as they had done in the previous matches.

Throughout much of the match, both the Rams and Aggies looked to be equal competitors with much of the play being dictated in the mid-field. Colorado State had its best attack and scoring opportunities early on in the match. Its best opportunity came in the 14th minute when Ruder pushed forward and took a shot from 20 yards out that hit off the crossbar and bounced out-of-bounds.

Utah State found the spark it needed midway through the first half from its reserves though. Moments after being subbed in, freshman for-ward Jessica Brooksby capitalized on a ball sent in from Jessica Hoskin-Killpack and placed the ball past junior goalkeeper Maggie Sherman in the 24th minute.

In the 40th minute, the Aggies once again got a key play from a reserve when sophomore midfielder Maris Hamblin drifted a ball over the top of Sherman and into the corner of the net from the edge of the box to give Utah State a 2-0 lead. While only out-shooting the Rams 4-3 in the first half, the Aggies would take the 2-0 lead into the intermission.

In the second half, Utah State converted on its only shot on goal in the 70th minute when Jayne Robison hit a well-placed shot past freshman goalkeeper Elena Eidson, who entered in the second half for the Rams, and gave the Aggies a 3-0 lead.

For the match, Utah State only had four shots on goal, but it converted on three of them.

MATCH 15 - COLORADO STATE VS. BOISE STATE

0 3

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Colorado State Rams (2-11-2, 1-7-0 MW) concluded the final home match of their inaugural season with a tough 3-0 loss to the Boise State Broncos (9-5-2, 4-2-0 MW) on Sunday afternoon at the Fort Collins Soccer Complex.

With rain pouring down for the duration of the match, the Rams battled the elements that made for unpredictable bounces on the field.

For the first 45 minutes, the match saw very little action as both teams played a scoreless half. Boise State had six shots in the first half compared to Colorado State’s zero shots, but didn’t have a single shot on goal.

In the beginning minutes of the second half, Boise State got the bounce that it was looking for. As a ball was crossed into the box, Colorado State junior defender Jessica Stauffer tried to clear the ball, but the ball rolled up her leg and hit her hand resulting in a penalty kick for the Broncos. Brooke Heidemann converted the penalty kick to give Boise State a 1-0 lead in the 54th minute.

“Those are the kinds of things that you wish would happen to your team,” Head Coach Bill Hempen said. “That’s the way the ball is bouncing for this group though.”

Just four minutes later, the Broncos separated themselves from the Rams with a goal in the 58th minute from Ashley Hruby.

In the 89th minute, Boise State added a third goal from Baylee Blaser to secure the 3-0 victory.

MATCH 16 - COLORADO STATE AT FRESNO STATE

FRESNO, Calif. - In yet another highly contested game in which a few key plays decided the outcome, the Colorado State Rams fell to 2-12-2 on the season and 1-8-0 in Mountain West play after losing at Fresno State, 3-0.

The Bulldogs got goals from Morgan Castain and Alyssa Holsworth in the 41st and 44th minutes, respectively, and added another, from Castain again, in the 81st minute to seal the 3-0 victory.

From the opening whistle, Colorado State looked to dictate the tempo against Fresno State. In the opening minutes, the Rams took it right to Bulldogs on their home turf, and had a dangerous opportunity in the fourth minute as Sasha Pchenitchnikova blasted a shot just over the bar from 20-yards out.

In the 41st minute of the match, an unlucky bounce changed the tide of the match. A deep throw in to the box bounced in between Colorado State and Fresno State players battling for position. In the midst of the scrum, the ball bounced up and hit a CSU defender’s hand and result-ed in a penalty kick which Castain, the conference’s leading goal scorer, put away.

Just three minutes later, Fresno State capitalized on the momentum and scored a second goal, this time from Holsworth, to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission.

Despite allowing the two goals late in the half, the Rams came out for the second half with a lot of passion and continued to put pressure on Fresno State. CSU just couldn’t find a way to get the ball in the net as it continued to trail by two goals for the majority of the half.

In the 81st minute, Castain scored her second goal of the match, and 12th of the season, as the Bulldogs caught the Rams’ defense out of position. The goal secured the 3-0 victory for Fresno State who outshot Colorado State 14-9.

MATCH 17 - COLORADO STATE AT SAN JOSÉ STATE

0 1

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Colorado State applied significant pressure to try and force overtime vs. San José State at Spartan Stadium, but the Rams weren’t able to find the back of the net, falling 1-0 Sunday afternoon.

The Spartans close out Mountain West action with a 2-6-1 record (3-13-1 overall), while the Rams finish their inaugural conference slate at 1-9-0 (2-13-2 overall).

SJSU’s Alexis Venegas buried her shot behind keeper Maggie Sherman in the 54th minute of play from inside the penalty box. Sherman faced 12 shots by the Spartans and had six saves on the day.

Hoping to create some momentum as the clock was winding down, CSU pushed everyone into the offensive zone in the final 8 minutes, including Megan Speed, who took over as keeper for the first time in a Rams’ uniform. The squad generated good chances, and had their best opportunity on a shot from Sasha Pchenitchnikova from just outside the box after maintaining possession on a cleared corner kick.

“Scoring goals has been an issue all season,” commented Head Coach Bill Hempen. “It’s not for lack of trying, but we lacked that instinctive personality to finish the opportunities we did create.”

San José State nearly muzzled CSU’s pressure with 3 minutes remaining on a shot from midfield that went just wide to left of the goal.

All told CSU tallied four shots on the day. Speed, Jami Vaughn, Amy Eckert, Catherine Ruder and Jessica Jochheim played the entire match.

MATCH 18 - COLORADO STATE AT NORTHERN COLORADO

2 2

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Colorado State Rams’ women’s soccer program ended its 2013 campaign on a positive note, earning a 2-2 draw against intra-state rival Northern Colorado in Greeley on Friday night.

Early on in the match, the Rams found a way to end the scoring drought that had been plaguing the team for the previous five matches and played with a lot of passion throughout the 110-minute, double-overtime match.

Knowing that they were playing in their last match of the season, the Rams looked determined to get a result against its rival. Just seven minutes into the match, Colorado State was rewarded for its early efforts with a goal from freshman midfielder Lizzy Gogolowski, the first of her career. The header goal was assisted from freshman midfielder Amy Eckert off of a corner kick, and was only a sign of the type of night that Gogolowski would have.

Colorado State looked to add to its lead as it continued to put the pressure on the Bears. The Rams were once again nearly rewarded for their efforts as freshman midfielder Carly Seib blasted a shot that hit off the post and bounced out of bounds in the 18th minute.

After withstanding the early pressure, Northern Colorado began to find its own rhythm in the match. In the 25th minute, Juliana Grover tied the match up for the Bears as she stepped in front of a CSU passing lane to secure possession and scored on a shot from 30-yards out. 10 minutes later, Sydney Schroeder got in on the scoring action as she rebounded her own shot into the net to give UNC a 2-1 lead which it took into halftime.

The Rams responded with the equalizer in the 69th minute as freshman midfielder Jessica Jochheim found Gogolowski for her second goal of the match. With the score all knotted up at 2-2 after the first 90 minutes, the teams went back to their benches and prepared for overtime. The Rams came out and looked to find a way to score the deciding goal, but were turned away on their two shots in the overtime periods. Northern Colorado also couldn’t muster any goals on its scoring opportunities, ending the match in a 2-2 draw.
