A Comprehensive Performing Arts Institute

Institute of the Arts Barcelona is an international specialist higher education institution dedicated to providing world-class, employ-ment focused education and training for creative, determined and talented students in acting, dance and musical theatre. The Insti-tute‘s educational provision has been developed around a number of interrelated beliefs and core values which place the student at the centre of what we do. To achieve its aim and vision, the Institute’s programmes foster the following:

CreativityCreativity is more than just about out-comes, it is a process. Each individual has their own approach to creative problem solving and the institute strives to help them find it.

Enterprise and EntrepreneurshipTo develop and maintain a career in the arts you need to be enterprising and en-trepreneurial. You need to grasp oppor-tunities as they arise and develop your own projects and businesses. Waiting to be discovered almost inevitably leads to failure.

Practical SkillsCreativity, entrepreneurship and inno-vation are vital for sustained success but those skills are of limited value if not underpinned by technical skills and knowl-edge.

Conceptual UnderstandingFor an individual to successfully and consistently employ practical skills, they must have a strong grasp of the theoretical concepts that underpin them and inform their use. To become a successful and re-flective practitioner, students must have a highly refined ability to evaluate their own work, and the work of others, and draw reasoned and coherent conclusions.

Tolerance and ResponsibilityPerforming Arts practitioners have responsibilities. The arts are by their very nature a window on the world. They are a window through which people (producers and consumers) develop an understanding of themselves and the society in which they live.

Excellence and IntegrityThe IAB practices a culture of excellence. This is achieved through sustained effort.

Global PerspectivesThe arts operate in an international creative and fiscal economy. Our perspective is global in scope and mindset.

The Institute is housed in a state-of-the-art building with outstanding resources, including a 200 seat theatre, spacious sprung floor studios, music room, acting room, library, café and social spaces.

Professional Teaching StaffOur teaching staff are all professionals with outstanding experience in their respective areas of expertise. As international practitioners and qualified academics, they have worked at the highest level across the world and have taught at some of the most prestigious performing arts institutions.

They are directly connected to the demanding performing arts industry and bring their knowledge, insight, professional connections and fresh approaches into our studios and classrooms. Under the care and guidance of these experts, students will have the opportunity to flourish and grow artistically.

Together, they have the passion and capability to turn students into artists that are ready for the demanding world of professional work.

Teaching staff may change over time. Visit our website for up-to-date teaching staff list and to read their bios.

ProgrammesInstitute of the Arts Barcelona offers employment-focused vocational training through

1 year Foundation Certificates and 3 year BA (Hons) degrees.

ACTING PROGRAMMES1 year Foundation Certificate3 year BA (Hons) Degree

IAB’s Acting Programmes empower gifted actors to reach their full potential.

Combining the best elements of classical training with a uniquely contemporary approach, we produce fearless, versatile actors who are fully equiped and prepared to meet the many challenges of stage, screen and digital media performance.

DANCE PROGRAMMES1 year Foundation Certificate3 year BA (Hons) Degree

Dance is changing. Old barriers, which divided ballet from contemporary, jazz from street, social dance from perfor-mance are crumbling away. Today’s professional dancer needs to be multi-skilled with high levels of creative and technical skills across as many forms as possible. We don’t believe in barriers. Our intensive, creative and highly techni-cal training provides students with a high level of grounded and rounded performance vocabulary.

MUSICAL THEATRE PROGRAMMES1 year Foundation Certificate3 year BA (Hons) Degree

Musical theatre is perhaps the most demanding of interna-tional theatre forms. It requires performers to be experts in the three disciplines of acting, dance and singing. A musical theatre performer is required to have a refined approach to acting, with a voice and dance vocabulary of the specialist performer. Our musical theatre training is rigorous and de-manding and truly promotes the “triple threat” required.
