In 2012 my son, Harlen, was diagnosed with Autism. Harlen was very withdrawn and we struggled to find therapeutic activities for him. It wasn’t until his doctor recommended therapeutic riding at TRI that Harlen found his true passion. As soon as he got on his first horse at TRI, his eyes lit up and he was full of life! He was a kid again! Not only did he love riding, but we began to see significant improvements. Harlen became more interactive and began to make eye contact with people. If you ask Harlen anything about horses he just opens up! He’ll tell you he wants to be a cowboy, and he rides “the old west way”. Unfortunately, medical bills began to add up and we struggled to pay for his riding lessons. Thankfully, TRI was able to find additional funding to provide Harlen with a scholarship. Now Harlen has improved so much that he is interacting with the kids at school.

We are so grateful for TRI and appreciate any support that will help him and other children continue to take lessons at TRI.

LETTER FROM 2015 BOARD CHAIRAs we say good bye to 2015, we are all reflecting on the continued growth of TRI and the incredible community support we have received this past year. Recognizing that our volunteer pool has expanded to beyond 300 members and the number of riding participants has exceeded 100 leaves us all grateful and excited to welcome 2016 as yet another amazing year. This past year we applauded Marleen Milkis, Executive Director, Michele Green, Program Director and Christine Pirot, Director of Development and Volunteer Management as they led TRI to another successful PATH Intl accreditation as a premier therapeutic riding facility. As our services continue to expand and we seek to build community partners, 2016 holds great promise to continue to grow and provide additional services to the Dayton and Cincinnati area. Thank you for your support.

Of 866 member centers in the country, only 259 are Premier Accredited.

“By attaining its PATH Intl. Premier Accredited Center status, Therapeutic Riding Institute has demonstrated a commitment to the highest standards when introducing individuals with special needs to a variety of equine-assisted activities,” said PATH Intl. Chief Executive Officer Kathy Alm. “PATH Intl. accreditation is a respected benchmark in the EAAT industry. It demonstrates leadership and a commitment to safety and to the highest professional

AMANDABLUST

I started at TRI back in 2012. It was for my school service hours for the year but it quickly became much more than just doing service hours. It became an opportunity during my family’s busy schedule for my sister Grace, my dad, John, and myself to spend time with each other on the drive down to TRI. When I started with TRI my parents believed that my 6th-grade self would slowly, after the requirement was met, would stop TRI and continue to another thing. They would drop me off every Thursday and either wait in the parking lot or go to the store. My dad decided in 2013 that waiting in the parking lot doing nothing was not worth it anymore and decided to start volunteering during the week with me. It made the time that much more important to go out. I remember one time during a lesson my dad and I were paired with a young man that was obsessed with my dad’s hats and his semi-bald head underneath of it. One day my dad was on a business trip and was not able to make it. As we were warming-up the student reached over to me and pats my head and says “Why aren’t you bald?” When my dad came back the next week he was asked, “Why are you bald?” He just laughed and continued walking. In 2015,

my sister decided to join the fun and started to volunteer too. She again had to do it for school but quickly the hours became less and less important and the time we spent at the barn became more and more important.”
