2015 Carroll Jazz Auditions Welcome to the Carroll Jazz Program! The audition this year is on Wednesday May 20th in the CSHS Black Box. Audition signup is online at http://goo.gl/JcMcQP. Below is a list of some important items related to the audition. Please read it all very carefully! General Information Be sure that you are signed up for the jazz class for next year. Your counselor will place you in a holding section for jazz band until results are released. Unlike many high schools, we’re fortunate to have credited class periods for all three of our bands. Please be aware that with the exception of bassists, pianists and guitarists, students must also be enrolled in the Concert Band program to participate in the jazz program. It is recommended that students use a laptop or PC to sign up for their audition time. Google Docs for some reason decides occasionally to prevent data entry from mobile devices. Again, the link to sign up for a time is http://goo.gl/JcMcQP. Based on the needs of specific bands, saxophonists may be asked to switch to or from alto, bari or tenor for next year. The skill demonstrated by saxophonists in the audition is far more important than the specific saxophone they choose to play on their audition. Please arrive at the audition at least 30 minutes before your scheduled audition time. This will allow you appropriate time to warm up and will ensure a smooth audition process if we happen to be running early. The typical instrumentation for a jazz band is 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 1 guitar, 1 piano, 1 bass and 1 drumset. Although I will consider doubling some parts if necessary, I will be trying hard to hold to this instrumentation and band size. It will ensure that the music sounds right and that there are not extra students with nothing to do during our classes. This unfortunately means that some students who audition will not be placed in a band. This is a normal occurrence, and students not making a band are strongly encouraged to try again in future years. Due to the nature of the audition, it is not blind and is adjudicated by Mr. Lown and two other professional jazz educators. We are committed to placing students in bands according to the knowledge and skill they demonstrate in the audition. The audition will be held at Carroll Senior High School, 1501 W. Southlake Blvd. Students are encouraged to enter the building through the front entrance, facing Southlake Blvd., and follow the hallway around to the right until they reach the Fine Arts wing. There they can unpack their instruments and warm up in the Jazz Room. Student assistants will be on hand to show your child to the Black Box. This can be a very difficult and intimidating audition for young players! Please be sure that you are ready to play your etude prior to showing up on May 20th. If you find that you are unable to perform the etude with any success by the week of the audition, it’s fine to contact me via email to have your entry removed. Students who are completely unprepared may have their audition cut short at judges’ discretion. Audition Requirements 1. Prepared Etude Students will perform the etude specified for their instrument. With the exception of Drumset, Guitar and Bass Trombone, all etudes this year are transcriptions of recorded

Welcome to the Carroll Jazz Program! The audition this year is on Wednesday May 20th in the CSHS Black Box. Audition signup is online at http://goo.gl/JcMcQP. Below is a list of some important items related to the audition. Please read it all very carefully!

    General Information

    • Be sure that you are signed up for the jazz class for next year.

    • It is recommended that students use a laptop or PC to sign up for their audition time. Google Docs for some reason decides occasionally to prevent data entry from mobile devices. Again, the link to sign up for a time is http://goo.gl/JcMcQP.

    • Based on the needs of specific bands, saxophonists may be asked to switch to or from alto, bari or tenor for next year. The skill demonstrated by saxophonists in the audition is far more important than the specific saxophone they choose to play on their audition.

    • Please arrive at the audition at least 30 minutes before your scheduled audition time. This will allow you appropriate time to warm up and will ensure a smooth audition process if we happen to be running early.

    • The typical instrumentation for a jazz band is 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 1 guitar, 1 piano, 1 bass and 1 drumset.

    • Due to the nature of the audition, it is not blind and is adjudicated by Mr. Lown and two other professional jazz educators. We are committed to placing students in bands according to the knowledge and skill they demonstrate in the audition.

    • The audition will be held at Carroll Senior High School, 1501 W.

    • This can be a very difficult and intimidating audition for young players! Please be sure that you are ready to play your etude prior to showing up on May 20th. If you find that you are unable to perform the etude with any success by the week of the audition, it’s fine to contact me via email to have your entry removed. Students who are completely unprepared may have their audition cut short at judges’ discretion.

    Audition Requirements

    1. Prepared EtudeStudents will perform the etude specified for their instrument. With the exception of Drumset, Guitar and Bass Trombone, all etudes this year are transcriptions of recorded

  • jazz solos. The original recording information is located at the upper left of the etude. It is highly recommended that students use the recordings as a reference as they prepare.

    2. SightreadingStudents will be given 30 seconds to review an unknown piece of music during the audition, and then they will perform it on their instrument.

    3. Optional Improvisation or Transcription PerformanceStudents will have an opportunity to demonstrate any additional work they have been doing on jazz improvisation or transcription. We will have a speaker and an aux cable so that students can plug in their phones and either a.) improvise along with a recorded play-along OR b.) perform a memorized transcription from a recorded jazz solo. Students should have their play-along or recorded track queued up to the right spot prior to entering the room. This performance should be under 60 seconds in length. This is designed for more advanced students to demonstrate the extent of their playing level and independent study. This is a bonus portion of the audition, and students are welcome to opt out.
