Each year, the IGDA hosts several events during GDC week, all of which require sponsorship support to become a reality. Support opportunities are available at many different levels.

The International Game Developers Association is the largest non-profit membership organization in the world serving individuals who create video games. Our mission is to advance the careers and enhance the lives of game developers by connecting members with their peers, promoting professional development, and advocating on issues that affect the developer community.

Since 1994, the IGDA has been actively engaged in elevating the profession of game developers, advocating on their behalf whenever necessary and providing a pathway for the next generation. This list highlights some of the key accomplishments of the IGDA in just 2014 (as of October):

Spoke out about the King.com trademark controversy and subsequently published a “Position Paper on Trademarks” to educate developers about IP and trademark issues.

Designed and conducted the new, annual Developer Satisfaction Survey aimed at better understanding the perspective of individual game developers on issues such as industry diversity, their quality of life and employment conditions.

Supported our international developer communities, such as open opposition to a potentially intrusive game ratings system in Mexico as well as the Australian government’s withdrawal of financial support for its game industry.

Enacted a new, explicit Inclusivity Policy to be applied to all IGDA-related communities and activities.

Facilitated IGDA Scholars groups at GDC, E3 and TGS to help upcoming graduates gain positive exposure to the game industry and be partnered with key mentors in their fields.

Coordinated with the FBI on cybersecurity threats to game developers, including the grievous harassment and doxing issues that came to light during the #GamerGate controversy.

Take This is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit charity founded in 2012 by veteran journalists Russ Pitts and Susan Arendt and clinical psychologist Dr. Mark Kline, Psy.D. in response to the tragic suicide of a colleague.

Take This promotes awareness and education of mental health issues and empathy for those suffering from emotional distress with the goal of eradicating the stigma of mental illness.

Take This helps those who suffer and their family and friends by letting them know that they are not alone and providing information on treatment and intervention options and how to find help.

Take This forms a bridge between communities in need and the mental health care experts waiting to help.

Take This educates greater institutions about effective methods of helping employees who suffer from emotional issues in order to promote healthier and more productive work environments.

Page 17: 2015 igda @ gdc sponsorship opportunities

Crowds, schedules, the immediacy of once-a-year events and other stressors common at conventions and expos can be triggers for many emotional issues, especially anxiety and depression.

More than a quiet space, the Take This AFK Room is a help center for people who need it, staffed full time with Take This volunteers and Take This certified mental health care clinicians, trained in “emotional first aid,” ready to help attendees regain their calm and get back to the show.

The Take This AFK is a place where people suffering from emotional distress can find help if they need it, and rest if they don’t.

Since Spring 2014, Take This has hosted AFK Rooms at every North American PAX event, with over 500 visitors per day. Starting in 2015, the AFK Room will be in every PAX worldwide, with other events to follow.

For more about the Take This AFK Room, or emotional first aid certification, please contact [email protected].

If you are a mental health care practitioner and would like to volunteer for the AFK, please contact Executive Director Russ Pitts at [email protected].
