Arnott replacement components for factory air suspensions. BMW offered air suspension systems as an

option on many models,most notably 5 serieswagons 97 thru 10, 7 series 02 thru 08, X5 and X6. In these

systems, air springs are used instead of coil springs. Until recently, the only option for replacing a failed air springwas to go to the dealer, where the cost was incrediblyhigh. Now you can get them at BavAuto for a fraction ofthe cost. The Arnott line of components includes pneu-matic springs, air compressors, strut assemblies andmore, all of which are direct replacements for the originalparts. $122.95–849.95.

Motul Brake Fluid. Motul 600 is a high-performance,brake fluid that far exceeds the requirements of DOT 4standards. Over 320 years of BMW/MINI experience isyours for the asking – free!If you add up all the years the Advisors at Bavarian Autosport have been working on BMWsand MINIs – and helping people like you work on theirs – it totals well over 300 years. That’s

a lot of knowledge under one roof. And it’s yours forthe asking. Have a question about your BMW or MINI?

Search Bavarian Otto’s knowledge base of more than 1,000tech Q&A at blog.BavAuto.com, or call 800.535.2002.

from blog.BavAuto.comAsk “Bavarian Otto”

800.535.2002 | 3Specific tools needed; repair experience recommended. Experienced technicians only.

Well, it’s new to me...Dear Bavarian Otto,I just bought a 2008 328i coupe with 110,000 miles on it. I had my brother-in-law (former mechanic) check it out before I bought it. He said a fewthings would need replacing – some bushings, probably the shocks, even-tually the brakes – but said overall it was in pretty good shape. Other thanfixing these items, are there any specific procedures I should do?Otto replies:Congratulations on your purchase! We hope the two of you will be veryhappy together. One of the keys to a successful “Bimmer marriage” is tak-ing proper care of your BMW. We have produced a series of maintenancecharts – one for every BMW and MINI chassis – that list 20-ish items whichwill require your attention from time to time. These charts are based on theold BMW maintenance schedules (before they changed them to reducetheir “initial cost of ownership” numbers), modified by our 40+ years of per-sonal experience as BMW specialists. You can download a free copy of thechart for your 328i at blog.BavAuto.com/go/maintenance.

You can also check out our 3-part series of DIY videos on how to perform a thorough inspection of your BMW or MINI: 1) under the hood, 2) under the front of the car, and 3) under the rear of the car. You’ll find them on our blog atblog.BavAuto.com/go/inspection.

One place you can’t easily inspect is the inside of the engine, and yet thismay be the most crucial area of the entire vehicle. A car can look beautifulon the outside and interior, appearing as if the owner gave it lots of TLC.But if that owner never changed the oil, or used cheap gas, or engaged indriving behaviors that put a lot of wear and tear on the engine, you couldbe looking at a lot of expensive repairs (or have to replace the engine). Tocombat this potential for poor care, we created the Liqui Moly Engine Renewal Kits. These kits are made up of oil and fuel additives that cleanthe gunk out of oil pans, fuel injectors, intake valves and more. They’re aninexpensive way to help bring older BMW or MINI engines back to baselineso you can maintain them properly going forward. (New/low mileage carscan benefit from our Liqui Moly maintenance kits, which prevent sludgeand deposits from forming.) We offer kits for both gasoline and diesel en-gines. You can find more details at blog.BavAuto.com/go/renewal-kit.

Subject: Awesome Experience[E-mail from Nic C., received Wednesday, November 19, 2014 4:13 PM] I just wanted to send a quick message to let you all know what an awe-some experience I had today with [an Advisor] named Alan. I had calledtoday to inquire about front control arm bushings for my E46 330xi (there’snot a whole lot of data out there compared to the traditional RWD E46 cars, and everything I found was assuming the installer had a hydraulic press, which I don’t). Alan took the time to research everything for my car, figureout that he would have to order the brackets directly from BMW, and thenoffered to have Powerflex urethane bushings pressed into the new bracketsfor me, allowing me to complete the DIY in my own garage. I can’t evenbegin to explain what a huge relief this is, as in my area dealerships willeasily quote $1,000 for this control arm service, and machine shops are fewand far between... This is a perfect example of why I choose to do businesswith BavAuto, instead of an online wholesaler or local dealership. Thanksagain! I probably wouldn’t still be driving my E46 if it wasn’t for you guys.Otto replies:Thanks for the kind words, Nic. Helping fellow BMW enthusiasts repair andmaintain their Bimmers is what makes us tick, especially when it savesthem money (which it does 99% of the time). Happy motoring!

Tools & Partsn Flexible hose clamp drivern Screwdrivers (flathead and Phillips)n Razor knifen 1/4" drive ratchet and sockets (8–13mm)n Fuel filter & installation kitn Locking hose-pinch pliersn Fuel hosen Hose clamps

1. Safely raise and support the vehicle.

2. Release the pressure in the fuel lines as follows: a. Start the engine b. Remove the fuel pump relay or fuse (see the applicable Bentley repair manual for relay or fuse location). c. Let the engine run until it dies. This will eliminate the pressure in the fuel system. NOTE: There will still be fuel in the system, but it will not be under pressure.

3. Remove any splash panels, if applicable. (Fig. 1)

4. Locate the inlet fuel hose (between the pump and the filter). Clamp it closed using a fuelline clamp or locking hose-pinch pliers (availableat BavAuto.com). If this is not convenient or possible due to the fuel line configuration, you’ll need to collect the draining fuel in a suitable container.

5. Note the orientation of the fuel flow arrow on the old fuel filter;you will install the new filter in the same orientation.

6. Using a flexible hose clamp driver, release the tension on the hose clamps. (Figure 2)

6 | BavAuto.com Very simple installation. Relatively simple; your BMW may need to be raised.

DIY: Replacing a fuel filter. While many of the latest BMW and MINI models now have the fuel filter mounted in-side the fuel tank, most earlier BMWs have their fuel filters mounted under the vehi-cle. In this DIY we will be showing how to replace an under-car fuel filter. Most modelswill require that you lift one end or one side of the vehicle for access. See the Spring2009 issue of Fast Times for instructions on proper vehicle lifting and support.(Since removal of wheels or suspension components is not required, you can alsorun the front or rear of the vehicle up onto ramps, if you have them.) Following arethe general steps that will apply to all under-car fuel filter replacements. The Bentleyrepair manual will cover specifics for your year and model. NOTE: Always wear safetyglasses and protective gloves, both of which are available from Bavarian Autosport.

Shield

Under-hood access to before-converter sensors:1. Locate the before-converter sensors on the passen-ger side of the engine, just outboard and below the valvecover (M54 6-cylinder shown in this example). Fig 1.

2. To remove and install the sensors, we’ll use the socketstyle oxygen sensor tool (BavAuto.com), a 3/8” to ½” driveadapter, ½” drive extension and a ½” drive ratchet. Fig. 2.

NOTE: Oxygen sensors can be rusted intoplace. Working on them when they are warm(from the engine running) can help with removal;be careful of hot engine and exhaust parts. Application of a good penetrant, such as MechanicAll (BavAuto.com) may assist in suc-cessful sensor removal.

3. Follow the wiring harness from the sensor to the har-ness-to-vehicle plug. Disconnect the sensor harness plugfrom the vehicle harness plug. Release any ties or clipssecuring the sensor’s harness to the engine or vehicle.

4. Slide the cut-out in the side of the socket over thesensor’s wiring harness and secure the socket onto thesensor’s hex base. Fig. 3.

5. Apply torque to the ratchet to loosen and then un-screw and remove the sensor.

6. Install the new sensor being careful to not touch thesensor’s end. Note that there is a pre-applied anti-seizecompound on the sensor’s threads.

7. Tighten the sensor to the specified torque (availablein the applicable Bentley repair manual). In this case, the torque is 37 lb-ft.

8. Route the sensor’s harness through any tiesor clips and connect to the vehicle harness plug.

9. Repeat 3 through 8 for the other before-converter sensor.

DIY: Replacing oxygen sensors. In this DIY, we will address a typical oxygen sensor replacement for model years1996 on. These models all use federally-mandated On-Board Diagnostics II (OBD-II).We will be working on the common M54 6-cylinder engine, used in most 3, 5, Z and X models from the 2000s. All OBD-II models have oxygen sensors mounted before as well as after the catalytic converter(s). Sensors located before the converters areaccessed from under the hood, while sensors located after the converters are accessed from under the vehicle. (Note: Earlier OBD-II models, generally 96 thru 00,may require that you access all sensors from under the vehicle.)
