CTE INDUSTRY PANEL The 21st Century Workforce

THE  21ST  CENTURY  WORKFORCE:  Training,  Skills  and  Competencies  Panel  will  facilitate  a  discussion  on  what  industry  partners  are  looking  for  in  recruiting  prospective  employees.  Katy  Gaul-­‐Stigge  will  moderate.  Panelists  include  participants  from:  the  Ernst  &  Young,  BTEA,  MTA/NYCT,  Tata  Consultancy  Services  and  Verizon.  

                       

KATY  GAUL-­‐STIGGE,  EXECUTIVE  DIRECTOR    of  the  Mayor’s  Office  of  Workforce  Development  reporting  to  Deputy  Mayor  of  Housing  and  Economic  Development.  Most  recently,  she  was  Deputy  Commissioner  at  Human  Resources  Administration  (HRA)  for  Employment  &  Contracts  directing  over  $170  million  in  programs  such  as  the  Back  2  Work,  Jobs-­‐Plus,  and  subsidized  job  programs.  She  launched  programs  to  help  TANF  clients  graduate  from  degree  programs,  a  Text-­‐2-­‐Work  program  to  text  open  job  orders,  and  contextualized  literacy  program.  She  has  over  a  decade  in  city  service,  including  as  Assistant  Commissioner  at  Small  Business  Services  (SBS)  where  she  led  the  Training  and  Advancement  team  and  launched  NYC  Training  Guide  and  expanded  Advance  at  Work.  She  is  a  graduate  of  Columbia  School  of  Social  Work  and  Mt.  Holyoke  College.    

                     

JOHN  SASSO,  ASSOCIATE  DIRECTOR  in  IT  Services  &  Northeast  AccessAbilities  Champion,  Ernst  &  Young.    John  Sasso  is  an  Associate  Director  in  the  Global  Infrastructure  Services  organization,  specifically  overseeing  the  On-­‐site  Services  department  for  the  NY\NJ  EY

offices.    His  department  is  responsible  for  providing  technology  support  and  services  to  over  11,000  customers  across  NY\NJ  market.    He  oversees  a  department  of  35  people  and  has  been  involved  in  hosting  interns  for  the  past  20  years.    He  is  a  graduate  of  St.  Peter’s  University,  and  a  champion  in  the  Northeast  Access  Abilities  resource  network  at  EY.      He  has  been  involved  over  the  past  20  years  in  volunteer  efforts  with  organizations  to  support  students  with  disabilities  including  those  that  are  blind\visually  impaired.    He  is  presently  working  closely  with  the  Ed  Lucas  Foundation.    

                     

LOUIS  J.  COLETTI,  PRESIDENT  AND  CEO  OF  BETA  has  over  25  years  of  experience  in  New  York’s  City’s  construction  industry.    He  has  been  the  President  &  Chief  Executive  Officer  of  the  Building  Trades  Employers’  Association  since  1997.    The  BTEA  is  the  nation’s  largest  contractor  organization  representing  27  contractor  associations  and  1,800  union  construction  managers,  general  contractors,  and  subcontractors  in  New  York  City.    He  is  responsible  for  leading  the  NYC  construction  industry’s  strategy  and  efforts  in  the  areas  of  economic  development,  government  affairs,  construction  safety  and  workforce  development  and  labor  relations  coordination.    From  1993-­‐1997  he  served  as  Senior  Vice  President  at  the  construction  management  firm  of  Leher  McGovern  Bovis  and  from  1986-­‐1993  as  President  &  Chief  Executive  Officer  of  the  New  York  Building  Congress.    He  serves  as  Vice-­‐Chairman  of  the  Mayor’s  Commission  on  Construction  Opportunities,  on  the  Executive

Committee  of  the  Association  for  a  Better  New  York,  is  a  member  of  the  NYU  Rudin  Center  for  Transportation  Policy  Advisory  Board,  ACE  Mentor  Board  of  Directors  and  NYU  Schack  Real  Estate  School  of  Construction  Management  Advisory  Board.      

                     

PATRICK  SMITH,  SENIOR  DIRECTOR,  CIVIL  SERVICE  ADMINISTSRATION  in  the  Human  Resources  Division  with  the  MTA  New  York  City  Transit.    Patrick  has  a  career  that  spans  over  thirty  years  in  the  public  sector  at  various  governmental  agencies.  In  this  capacity,  Patrick  is  responsible  for  the  “human  capital”  of  the  organization,  which  includes,  among  other  things,  oversight  of  personnel  testing,  selection  and  classifications,  talent  engagement  and  acquisition,  and  student  experiential  programs.  As  a  part  of  his  responsibilities  for  talent  engagement  and  acquisition,  over  the  past  twenty  years  Patrick  has  worked  collaboratively  with  local  colleges,  universities,  career  and  technical  high  school  and  technical  trade  schools  to  address  the  ever-­‐increasing  skills  requirements  of  the  21st  Century  workforce.  Over  the  past  ten  years,  Patrick  has  also  served  as  a  Board  Member  of  two  labor-­‐management  trust  funds,  one  of  which  provides  skills  upgrade  training.  Patrick  holds  a  Master  of  Science  degree  in  Applied  Mathematics  from  New  York  University  Courant  Institute  of  Mathematical  Science  as  well  as  a  Bachelor  of  Science  degree  in  Chemical  Engineering  from  Polytechnic  University.            

       

BALAJI  GANAPATHY,  HEAD  OF  WORKFORCE  EFFECTIVENESS  for  Tata  Consultancy  Services  in  North  America  oversees  the  functions  of  Talent  Management,  HR  Business  Consulting,  Corporate  Social  Responsibility,  Employee  Retention,  and  Diversity  &  Inclusion  for  over  22,000  employees  of  Tata  Consultancy  Services  in  North  America.  His  primary  responsibilities  include  coaching  sales  &  business  teams  for  new  business  acquisition,  driving  talent  management  &  employee  retention  initiatives,  leading  the  corporate  sustainability  initiatives  &  chairing  the  Diversity  &  Inclusion  Council  for  TCS  North  America.  Prior  to  this  stint,  as  the  Head  of  HR,  CTO/R&D,  Balaji  was  part  of  TCS  Corporate  Technology  Board  &  spearheaded  the  mandate  for  institutionalizing  a  culture  of  innovation  across  TCS.  Prior  to  that,  as  Head  of  HR  for  the  Corporate  Learning  Center,  he  led  a  team  responsible  for  inducting  &  orienting  over  12,000  campus  hires.    Before  joining  TCS,  he  co-­‐founded  &  operated  an  entrepreneurial  venture  that  provided  process  consulting  services  &  coaching  to  companies  in  the  manufacturing  sector.  He  has  been  a  speaker  at  numerous  venues,  presenting  a  range  of  topics  relating  to  business,  human  resources  &  the  information  technology  industry.  He  is  an  active  advocate  of  deriving  social  good  through  the  

confluence  of  public,  private  &  non-­‐profit  partnerships.  He  holds  a  Post  Graduation  in  Human  Resources  Management  from  Xavier  Labor  Relations  Institute  (XLRI),  Jamshedpur  and  a  Bachelor  of  Technology  from  College  of  Engineering,  Trivandrum.    

 LARRY  SCOTT  BLACKMON,  VICE  PRESIDENT,  COMMUNITY  AND  GOVERNMENT  AFFAIRS,  at  Fresh  Direct,  joined  FreshDirect  from  the  New  York  City  Department  of  Parks  and  Recreation,  where  he  served  as  the  Deputy  Commissioner  for  Community  Outreach.    In  that  role,  Blackmon  focused  on  the  oversight  of  Partnerships  for  Parks,  a  joint  program  of  the  City  Parks  Foundation  and  the  Parks  Department.  He  also  supervised  Parks'  Government  Relations  division,  Arts  &  Antiquities,  the  Parks'  Citywide  Services  division,  special  events  at  the  Arsenal,  as  well  as  the  GreenThumb  division,  which  supports  the  operations  of  more  than  600  community  gardens  throughout  New  York  City.  Blackmon  also  managed  the  Parks  Department's  relationship  with  NYC  Service,  focused  on  expanding  volunteer  recruitment  efforts.    Prior  to  the  Parks  Department,  Blackmon  served  as  Chief  of  Staff  and  Deputy  Commissioner  for  Intergovernmental  Affairs  at  New  York  City  Department  of  Small  Business  Services.  Previously,  he  worked  for  the  New  York  Jets  of  the  National  Football  League  where  he  served  as  the  Senior  Manager  for  Public  Affairs.    Blackmon  has  held  advisory  positions  with  a  large  number  of  New  York  City's  elected  officials.  He  served  

as  Senior  Campaign  Advisor  to  former  Mayor  Michael  Bloomberg,  Special  Assistant  to  the  Chief  of  Staff  to  former  City  Council  Speaker  Gifford  Miller,  Deputy  State  Director  in  the  Office  of  U.S.  Senator  Charles  Schumer,  as  well  as  Deputy  Campaign  Manager  and  Political  Director  for  former  City  Council  Member  Kathryn  Freed.
